Bluetooth Internet Access using iMate / XDA II -Dongle on PC
G'day All,
Has anyone had any luck setting up a BT dongle on their XP machine to allow internet access from an XDA II (iMate)?
I've tried all the logical things... Paired the two machines - I'm using the Widcomm stack on the XDA II and am using "Internet Access via BT" profile.. and both the PD and XDA II have static IPs on the same subnet...
Not really sure what I've missed?!
Cheers
Andy
BT networking
I am also using Widcomm BTW 1.3.2.7. I can setup the activesync via BT. However, I could not use Network Access, File Transfer. The Widcomm software could not find the XDA II when I click Network Access. Also, I could not map the PC drive by Resco Explorer.
Anyone get some tutorial or step by step instruction for the setup of BT networking on XDA II. I can find some for H2210, but XDA II didn't got the bluetooth manager and connection manager. The interface is also different.

Where did you get the WIDCOMM stack for the Xda II? DO you have some other services running via the bluetooth stack of WIDCOMM?
Have you tried the Xda II bluetooth utility from http://bluetooth.i-networx.de ?

I've successfully accessed the Internet through a Bluetooth dongle on my XP machine. The situation is similar to accessing the Internet via ActiveSync when the XDA II is docked on its cradle. I used the ActiveSync profile of the Bluetooth dongle. Then I set ActiveSync to allow serial cable connection from the Bluetooth dongle's serial port (created by the ActiveSync profile). After that, I paired the dongle with my XDA II. That's all I did and I could access the Internet whenever I sync via Bluetooth.

I also tried to set up a Bluetooth network between my XDA II and my desktop PC. But it seemed that the XDA II doesn't have the Bluetooth profile for Network Access nor for File Access. I would be very glad to be proven wrong.
In fact, I want to setup TV streaming in my house. Besides, I want to retrieve the MP3 file/video on demand. Using activesync could not do this, is there anyone sucessfully using widcomm stack to networking with XDA II via network access

I have to uninstall it to use Xda II as wireless modem.
How to solve with this problem?
Thanks,
I am new to this so be gentle.
How do I instal the BTGPS.
I tried but i get two BT icons instead.
Can someone provide me with a step by step guide.

What's your rom version?
---------------------------
If it's original o2 XDA II 1.03 USA ROM.
1. Turn off BT with original BT manger.
2. You remove \Windows\Startup\BTIcon.lnk (copy it to somewhere, you may need it again).
3. Soft Reset
4. Turn on Bluetooth again with the only one remain icon (BTTrayCE)
Then do as following picture http://www.pdamobiz.com/forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=9559
---------------------------
But for other rom version please tell me, I can upgrade rom and test network access with you.
Thanks
Mine is the stated ROM version - it appears to be working fine.
How ho I obtain the icon that shows in that particular webpage?

OK, here's where I've got to.
I've installed the Widcomm stack, and also installed a Belkin dongle on my desktop machine. This machine is configured to act as an Internet Connection Sharing machine. The idea is that I connect my cable modem to this desktop machine, and then I can connect my laptop to my desktop and browse the web. My idea was that I would also connect my XDA to this machine and do likewise.
Now, this of course leaves me with three network connections on my desktop. One to connect to my cable modem, one to connect to my wired network, and one for the bluetooth dongle.
Now, if I configure ICS on this machine, then I can either have my laptop or my bluetooth dongle sharing the PC connection. When I do this, everything is fine. However, I can only use one at a time.
So... what I do is create a network bridge in XP, and tell XP to share the internet connection with the bridge. Now I have internet on my PC, internet on my laptop, but no internet on my XDA.
It is as though the bluetooth/network software can't get "through" the bridge. It works fine when I'm not bridging, but gives up when I am.
Any ideas??
BTW, the bluetooth itself is working fine in all circumstances, in that I can use the File Transfer protocol, so this seems to be specific to the network protocol stuff.

Yes it is possbile. You need to connect via bluetooth activesync. It might depend on what bluetooth your laptop uses. Mine is Belkin and that works great.

Hi i am connected via bluetooth activesync but still can't access the ADSL Internet that my PC is using. do i need to make any changes any where.
thanks
can u be kind enough to let me know the procedures for using bluetooth and activesync...i have tried but failed.
thanx
it took me a whole day work to get it work and at the end i discover 2 things.
1. We have to read manuals carefull and follow instalation instructions for bluetooth software and driver .
2. to activate activeSync simply go to you XDA II and select ActiveSync from start --> activeSync and then go to tools and select connect via Bluetooth.
thats it, now how can i make it access internet using ActiveSync , i have no IDEA
check if there is a V before PASS-TROUGH ( in activesync )
Hi what do you mean by a V before PASS-TROUGH!! , i have selected in RULES to use internet and i checked "open active synch when my mobile connect"
Hi all,
I've been following the Widcom port across to the XDA-II, not because I want to attach a GPS, but because of the much expanded feature set.
I installed the BluetoothGPS.zip file, then activated all the new services offered by the phone.
I have a Belkin F8T001 USB Adapter in my broadband PC. I want to use BT to surf the net from the XDA without paying O2. Trouble is, my Belkin doesn't provide an Activesync Profile, so it can't be done. Until now, that is.
Belkin USB adapters offer a 'Network Access' service. The Widcom stack now allows the XDA to wireless network with my PC, map drives with Resco Explorer, surf the net without the bother of Activesync, oh, and Activesync over BT Wireless LAN if you like. The PC acts very much like a WiFi access point.
Another excellent bonus is the ability to browse the PDA with the BT 'File Transfer' Service. This is easier than browsing through Activesync, as you can open picture files directly without having to transfer them to the PC first.
Nice one guys, well done!

PAN vs LAP Bluetooth Profile on XDA / iMate
G'day All,
Thanks for the post on Net access - It's not as easy as it looks (having spent AGES getting iPAQs working with Bluetooth Dongles (BTW: You DO need 1.3.2.7 of the Widcomm Stack on XP to make PAN connections work!!!
My question is:
Has anyone managed to work out how to get PAN or LAP Network Bluetooth access going on an XDA II??
I can easily get a PAN network access connection going on an iPAQ 5550 (with the identical Widcomm stack version) - On the XDA II with the Widcomm stack installed, it defaults to a LAP profile... (Using BT Null Modem). I can't get this method working with internet access.
If I connect XP to the iMate, then the PAN driver is used on the PDA - BUT I can't get any traffic through (this is the same on the iPaq and the iMate).
Anyone got any clues / hints for me, please?!?! (ROM versions etc are latest).
Cheers.

Hi,
I'd same the problem, but since I enabled service Personal Network Sever, then at PC side connect to Xda II, it's working, I can ping from / to Xda II.
(enable service by start > setting > bluetooth > from File Transfer to Personal Network Server, I checked them all)
But it's problem to connect via Xda II to PC, then I restarted PC and PPC and make new shortcut of PC Network Access.
Now it's working I can use Resco file explorer to map driver of PC share folder and get access to file. But it's seem unstable because it's hang sometime.
ps: Thank so much to the great person who made bluetoothgps.zip.

I have BluetoothGPS.zip (about 2Megs zipped) give me somewhere to upload it & i will.
That's a shame, it used to be on ftp://hydrosphere:[email protected]/ but it's gone now. I've obviously got it, but I'm damned if I'm hosting it as it's 'unlicenced software'.
Any suggestions?
As acurtis007 pointed out, it's not easy to do this even on the correct PDA. If you do get hold of the Widcom stack, you need to understand networking and a little voodoo to surf the net.
One advantage is that the BT Dongle in your PC becomes like an access point. You no longer have to set up an Activesync Partnership, so a PC can be logged in as anybody, and any PDA(s) can surf.
Here's the way to get Surfing over BT using proper IP NAT:
Your XP PC
Your installed BT Dongle should offer a Local Service called 'Network Access'. This should be started automatically, and creates a 'Bluetooth LAN Access Server' interface in your Network Connections. This is the important bit: Activate 'Internet Connection Sharing' on your LAN Card. Select the Bluetooth LAN Adapter as the Interface you want to share with. If you don't have a LAN card, then share whatever interface connects to the Internet.
If your LAN Card already has an ip address that starts with 192.168.0. then you're out of luck. You'll have to change the entire setup of your LAN to another Subnet. I chose 192.168.50.x, which is fine.
If you have correctly activated ICS, your BT LAN Interface will have the IP address 192.168.0.1, and your Internet device will have a hand under it's Icon.
You're XP PC is now ready to accept Bluetooth surfers - both of the Internet and your LAN.
The XDA-II
Bung in the Widcom Stack
Run the Lovely new Bluetooth Connection Wizard and Explore. You'll see a PC icon appear, tap it. You should be offered a range of services, depending on what make of BT Dongle you have. Select 'Network Access'. A Shortcut appears. Hold the stylus down on the Icon, and select Connect from the pop-up. You will have to do the PIN thing as you connect the 2 devices. The XDA's Bluetooth Null Modem then connects to the PC, and hello broadband.
The stack is very stable. I've been using it for 2 weeks now every day for both surfing and file transfers.
It's not perfect - beware
This is a hack, and therefore does not operate entirely correctly:
You will ALWAYS get an error message when first initialising the new stack. I'm used to it: Start Bluetooth - it fails; Start Bluetooth again - it runs. This happens every time, and I just live with it. Once it's up, I can surf till the battery dies.
You will need to reset your XDA-II's Connection Settings (Advanced - Select Networks) back to 'My ISP' where it says 'Programs that....Internet..'
Others on this forum have reported that the XDA's sound gets disabled when you uninstall the Widcom cab file. I haven't had cause to do this as I'm 100% keeping it. This is the advice I've seen posted:
"Uninstalling Widcom Stack
If you have the Widcom stack go to the WIDCOM BT-manager Audio gateway tab and Disable this before uninstalling. Sound should then remain actve."
So there you go - it works a treat.
Steve Head
If you want a bit of fun, try this:
Get yer Widcom network access up 'n' running
Put a TV Tuner Card into the PC with the BT Dongle attached, and hook up your Sky Box to the TV Card.
Download the free 'Microsoft Media Encoder'
Using Media Encoder, Run a Live Broadcast, and select 'Pocket PC Widescreen' as the target audience. Your Sky Box output (or whatever) is now being converted into a TCP/IP Stream at the sort of data rate your XDA can handle.
To watch Sky on your XDA all round the house, run Media Player on your XDA and enter the url http://192.168.0.1:80 (assuming you're connected via BT). You can also do this with a Webcam, and remotely monitor it full screen on your PDA.

As the XDA connects to the LAN over a BT null modem. It seems to be quite slow.
Is this due to the settings of the modem restricted to 11500 baud rate limit for the hardware?
Whilst i am at it. let me throw this in the works.
The XDAII connects via BT to a PC on the network. I can browse the network from the PC. But i can only browse the files on the PC that i am directly connected to via BT from the XDA as well as access the internet. Is this normal?
IP address is 192.168.0.1 on BT adapter. The LAN connection of the PC is 192.168.11.5 ( auto ip).
all other PCs on the network are in the 192.168.11.x range.
Any suggestions?

Oorbz: To conect to your home LAN you need to set up a Networking bridge (Because your network is devided in 2 segments). Using windows xp its included. Mark both network adapter and choose "Network bridge". After that you only configure the bridge and both networks are conected under one subnet mask. Sometimes BT-Adapters are not fully compatible with the network bridge. Then you need to do 2 little steps:
On the console type in:
Code:
netsh bridge show adapter
then type in
Code:
netsh bridge set adapter # forcecompatmode=enable
# stands for the Number of your BT Adapter.
Thats it. Now you have access to your complete LAN and NAT-Router. Using a fix IP on your XDA will speed up the start of the conection, but DHCP works fine too. All computers whould now have an IP from the same subnet liek 192.168.0.# / 255.255.255.0.
PS using a WLAN adapter some drivers need this settings too in order to work with the windows XP networking bridge.

Hi
You mentioned the Belkin BT adaptor. That is about 30 odd pounds. Are all BT adaptors the same? i.e. do they just implement some version of the protocol? Seems the Belkin one implements v1.1.
How about this one, will it also do the job?
http://www.qtds.com/code/products.asp?recid=621&
Costs about 15 pounds, so much cheaper
btw, if your laptop already has BT built in, do you need to buy a dongle?
Hi,
could an expert out there advise me if my theory is possible please?

Thanks to all.
The site is great but much of it goes straight over my head at the moment..
P
ummm ... your theory seems not that much difficult as you can implement it using Bluetooth networking I guess ..
you can setup bluetooth networking from Pocket PC to Laptop then you can browse what your home PC conatin from your PDA
give it a try
I hope this is what U was talking about , if not please give us more clarifications
Cheers
It is better and faster to use Wifi if you're going to use terminal services.
Been using this method since last year.
Thanks but I do not have wifi or bluetooth...
There is a ref to doing it on MS site via the cradle and usb but then it shoots off in the over the web stuff...
I have tried just now but nothing connects.... But I notice that when I check my desktop (xp) pc under the rempte tab - I only have Remote Assistance.... Could this be it? Perhaps I do not have Remote Desktop installed then ! Eh? I will try to locate my original xp discs and see if I can install !!??
Ta.
Remote desktop or Terminal services connect only via IP address.
So you can only connect via TCP/IP using WIFI on your XDA.
Bluetooth 1.1 has no IP address setting so it is not possible also.
I tried all methods since last year and WIFI is the only solution or if your XDA has a backpack you can use a CF type NIC for wired connection via crosslink or hub.
Still Wifi is the cheapest and cleanest alternative. You can use Adhoc settings between your PC if you have no WIFI access point.

With WM6 you have Internet Sharing. DUN is no longer included.
If you hook up your laptop via the USB cable to the phone and run Internet Sharing you will be fully connected to the internet.

Hi all,
Is anyone able to pair and install BT services using default windows BT stack and Windows XP SP3 ? 'Cause I can't. Here's my problem:
M notebook can see my phone and I can pair it without any problem using "Add Bluetooth Device Wizard". However
when it comes to "Installing Bluetooth device...", it hangs, but after a while it says "Bluetooth Device was successfully connected to your computer".
However I don't see any BT devices installed in my Device Manger (such as "Standard Modem over Bluetooth" which is needed for Dial-up Networking. Also if I open BT device Properties and click Services, the list of available services is empty! This way I cannot use BT for anything else but file transfer. BT Active sync, Dial-up networking nor BT PAN works!
This however does not happen on Vista! Under Vista (same machine) it installs the services just fine. Please look at the screenshots below for comparison:

Try nto pair it first via cable than use connect via bluetooth while keeping both bluetooth in discoverable mode. Should work fine... I have xp sp3 and in the beginin I had a few issues now all works fine
I'm afraid cable (USB) connection has no effect on BT service discovery. But anyways I gave a try. ICS works perfect over USB so do the ActiveSync connection. However still no chance over BT. The devices (both the phone and PC) see each other, and I can send files over BT in both direction but no Active Sync over BT, no BT PAN or DUN. I need to somehow "force" my XP BT drivers to discover these services (since Vista discovers them automatically) or set all these manually in registry, which would be pain in the butt, and there would be still no guarantee it would work ...
QUESTION 1: Does any of you install any 3rd BT drivers (provided by HTC or not) prior pairing your device and connecting over BT ?
QUESTION 2: Can anyone try to pair their device with their PC using default Windows BT stack (not Widcomm!!!) running on Windows XP SP3 and post screenshots of available services as seen in Post #1 ?
QUESTION 3: If you manage to pair and install BT devices and your DUN, BT-PAN or ActiveSync over BT works fine, would you please post the exact ROM version, CE version, AKU version your device is using ? Also would you post the exact BT driver name and version your PC is using ? (you find this information in your PC's Device Manager, under Bluetooth Radios section)
Thanks in advance!

I don't know if I can help, but i had active sync problems via bt as well...
...but before i start writing long explanations, pls answer these question:
1.) Did you establish the connection/partnership under vista first and afterwards you've tried on the xp system?
2.) if answer to 1) is yes, have you deleted the vista system partnership on the hd before trying to establish the xp system partnership, or do you want to synchronize with "two computers" (or does your hd have a partnership with another computer system already?)

Hi jan,
Thanks for your effort and will to help. Here are the answers to your questions:
1.) Did you establish the connection/partnership under vista first and afterwards you've tried on the xp system?

I did the pairing with XP running on machine first, and then after numerous failed trials I gave up, formatted the HDD and quickly installed Vista on it. Then I performed hard-reset on my Touch HD to clear all settings on the phone as well.
2.) if answer to 1) is yes, have you deleted the vista system partnership on the hd before trying to establish the xp system partnership, or do you want to synchronize with "two computers" (or does your hd have a partnership with another computer system already?)

Since there was a new instance of the operating system installed on my notebook, there was no need to delete any partnership.
ok, so it seems to be different from my problem which was more like:
1.) AS via BT on XP machine without problem (XP Professional version 2002 SP3)
2.) additional pairing with MacBook via AS BT
3.) went well for some time
4.) suddenly the AS service over BT for the XP machine disappeared on the, tried several new pairings without succes, from computer to HD and from HD to computer, AS service didn't come back
5.) solution for me was: untick AS service on HD BT settings for the Mac Book, re-establish BT connection to XP-machine, refresh BT services on HD for XP machine, suddenly AS service was available again, so placed the tick for the xp mashine as well as for the macbook and now it works fine again...
... so you see... tricky problem as well, but different... sorry that I couldn't help you.
good luck anyway
regards jan
P.S.: Although it works, I don't have the Active Sync service displayed for the HD on my xp machine as well, only the DUN, but deactivated.
I had issues and solved it by:
Deleteing all bluetooth partnerships on the PC
Deleting partnerships on the Phone
Rebooting both devices
Setting both items as "discoverable"
From active sync on the PHONE choose "connect via bluetooth"
IT should ask you to set a new partnership, do so and confirm when your pc prompts
Once both have confirmed a connection, reconnect via activsync on the phone and it should work
KennyDies,
Are you using default Windows BT stack or Widcomm BT stack ? If default Windows BT stack, would you mind posting your driver versions a BT hardware you using ?
Many thanks in advance!
S.
TO ALL,
I'd still appreciate if any of you folks would give a minute and answer my questions from this post.

Hi sasovics,
can´t give you the answer but I found out the same issue.
I´ve two win xp installations with SP3 and microsoft BT stack and it looks like what you are describing. Both computers are new installations and one of it has been worked before correclty (it that case widcom driver). I also tried out three BT devices but it dont depend on the device itself.

I had the same problem and searched all over the net to find some answers until i found the solution for this issue yesterday.
I have dell inspiron(my laptop), and i have Xperia wm6.1
1) Download the latest Toshiba bluetooth stack for XP.
2) Remove any bluetooth softwares.
3) Install Toshiba stack
4) Check in control Panel "bluetooth local com", u will find alot of ports. See which one of these ports written beside it [serial port] in brackets.
5) Go to Activesync connection settings and use the same port in step 4
6) Open the bluetooth software add new devices and add urs
7) Use ur phone and open activesync press menu "connection via bluetooth".
It'll ask u to pair a device press ok and look for ur comp and add it. After addtion of ur laptop, keep pressing on the icon of ur laptop listed in the bluetooth devices a menu will appear chose edit a list of services will appear. READ carefully the next steps.
8) PRESS REFRESH SEVERAL TIMES may be 4 or 5 times untill activesync appear as one of the options tick the box and save
9) Go to activesync over ur phone and chose connection via bluetooth and it should start to sync.
