Where to buy/order an XDA II (or 'lookalike') ? - MDA II, XDA II, 2060 General

I am living in the Netherlands and would love to get my hands on a XDA-II (or whatever name it sells at). I would prefer a dutch supplier, but ordering via the internet is ofcourse no problem (only when you have a problem with the device ofcourse). Any suggestions ?

How about T-mobile ?

If I wouldn't have 'disliked' the outside (the black area's) I would have definately got one from T-Mobile, but I like the Qtek and I-mate one's much better

Whatever matters to you. I didn't even notice it
Don't really care either

No Idea as far as a local provider is concerned, however I and several others have had great service/response from http://www.phones4devs.com for our XDA II orders.
Rob is very quick to respond to email inquiries and shipped the same day I made my payment. I'd definitely recommend them and from the different posts it seems others have had similar experiences.

When are Orange going to wake up.. M5000 is
a) late
b) data charges are more expensive than O2
c) device will actually cost more that the *already out* XDA Exec.
I have loyalty to orange.. but the price difference and delays are too much.
Besides which I have 900 business user im wanting to put on and to be honest.. which one I use for my personal use will prolly be the same I as Instruct my company to buy.
Get off your ar$e orange.. Your the slowest and most expensive in the pack. Why in hells name would a business want to go with you even with existing loyalty when its like this.
And the orange price promise seemed to go out of the window years ago. It should now read "We'll copy any tariff that's pretty expensive and come up with 1001 excuses not to match any that you may want."
the m5000 is available in france, and not very expensive :
700 € without any subscription....
Aye bud..
Its so bloody annoying.. I actually prefer working and developing with Orange but the Account manager is useless and never returns calls or emails(previous one on maternity leave was better).
Promises have been broken time and again on released date (anyone remember when they said it would be ready the 2nd of Sept 2005 lol).
If Imate, 02 and t mobile can get it right.. WTF are Orange playing at.
The current tariff structure is near archaic – 3G on orange is really expense.. This idea of downloading a music video or a powerpoint slide on 3G just makes me want laugh… yeah if you want to spend 16 pounds on one song..
it begin to be interesting with orange, for example, TV is without limit every week end ...
another potential problem with the Orange M5000.... IT MIGHT HAVE WI-FI DISABLED :!:
I was reading about the different models during the past few weeks before I finnally gave up and bought my xda Exec last week.
What I gathered from specialised sites was that Orange was considering disabeling the Wi-Fi capabilities of the M5000. a very stupid move i might add.....
In any case I went into an Orange shop early last week and enquired about the matter (and soon gave up due to the 'highly' knowledgable staff  ) - the guy claimed that he was SURE that its not disabled - the person there showed me the info on Orange's intranet - and it actually has a remark there regrding the Wi-Fi capability of the device - that it "is up to the discretion" of the mobile operator....
I have no vested interst here - all I'm saying is - take care and make sure it has Wi-Fi b4 u buy it!
Shhh that is serious.. can anyone confirm that the Orange M5000 does or doesnt have WiFi?
It has WIfi

Why Aren't O2 UK Releasing the XDA Trion?

Hi All,
I am an O2 customer in the UK and as they were the original company to bring the XDA concept to us, why have they chosen to not release the XDA Trion in the UK? I am well aware it is out in Germany but why not here? Have they got too many XDA Mini S units in stock or what?
If anyone can shed some light on this, please do, what have they kept up their sleeve? Is there something better on the way already?
I look forward to your comments and thanks for the feedback.
I just had a call from o2 for business following my email to them of when they expected the Trion to be released in the UK, and the rep said that there were no plans to release it in the UK at all.
So, how are they going to compete with T mobile who not only are going to release it over here, but also have a great data tariff in Flext with web n walk?
Orange, who are already offering it, and vodafone who already have it apparently!
I have been with O2 since the Genie days, and have been reasonably happy with them up until recently. Probably round the time they were bought out.
Bizarre!
They didn't do the XDA Neo either.
Maybe they have something better up their sleeves?
Well Voda and T-Mobile has HSDPA but O2 don't so perhaps this the reason why. However it does seem a bit odd given the amount of effort O2 made over the XDA Exec.
O2 tend to have a yearly lifecycle on their XDA's whereas the other SP's tend to release as and when. Bearing this in mind and the fact that the Mini S and Exec have only been out for 8 and 9 months respectively, I wouldn't expect to see a new device from O2 until November/December.
Interesting point on the product life cycle. I have heard that O2 are seriously looking at releasing the HP Ipaq 6915, so maybe that is why they have steered clear of the Trion for now. Also I do not like the look of the HTC TyTn or the Vodafone V1605 compared with the Orange SPV M3100 and Trion. The button configuration on the latter two is more pleasing to the eye. So if I want one I have to go for the "ugly" one as I have a great deal from O2!!! I wish we could get the Dopod 838 pro here, subsidised on contract!!!
I just had an interesting conversation with O2 business regarding the release of the XDA Trion in the UK.
First person I spoke to told me that the Trion was not on the 15 week schedule of new phones releases so it definately wouldn't be released in that time.
So I phoned a different number at O2 and was told that the Trion is expected sometime late August or September??!!! I told the man what I had previously been told by the other rep and he says that is rubbish and that the unit is currently being tested by the testing unit prior to it's UK release!
So it seems the phone is coming to the UK...but I bet if I call a third person at O2 they will tell me something completely different...*sigh*
Why dont these people sing from the same hymnsheet?
Anyone heard any different news on the Trion's UK release date (if ever?)??
Al
You are right there. They have no idea what they are doing. Someone I spoke to said it is for America only. I said O2 have a network in America, she says yes, not checked, but I didn't think so. I said so why is out in Germany? You must be mistaken sir, must be.
I asked about HSDPA, and they checked with network services who said it is not being released by O2 as it offers very little extra bandwidth over 3G. I said I think you should ask them to check that.
I am on such a stonking tariff, I do not want leave O2, so here's hopeing the Trion turns up, otherwise I will have to conisder the P990i.
Yes Sunnychad, they dont have a clue. I really want this phone and am on a mission to find out the truth about UK release or not. See what you can find out at your end too.
Al
I spoke to someone in retentions about leaving as I wanted to move to a network that has the equivalent of the Trion and is offering HSDPA too. She put me on hold after telling me I was a select customer etc. Came back to say it is on the cards but there is no confirmed release date as the Trion is still in testing etc. I said OK. She then said there is something else coming called the O2 Jet. I am also aware that O2 are releasing the HP HW6915.
Also just found this link. I wonder what this handset is.

This is an O2 xda Atom Exec:

It is manufactured by Quanta, not HTC:

I think you are mistaken.
There are pictures of 2 phones, one is referred to as New XDA and has a camera on the front panel, therefore 3G.
The other is of the XDA Atom Exec in a state of disrepair. Have another look and let me have you thoughts.
Thanks

But are we to believe this latest reponse when the tesing team are actually 'testing' the Trion for the UK now?
Wouldn't take too much from that. You know, I think we just have to wait and see as O2 can't give us anything solid to go by.
Al
O2 UK are not releasing the Trion.
Dave, I don't think anyone can comment about it's release for sure as I've been told by the media dept. at O2 that they are testing the unit for general release in the UK. Also Ive been told by a shop (unbelievable I know) that it is to be released. As well as being told completely conflicting info by other sources.
We'll see.

I used CoPilot with my old MDA Compact and it was great. I am waiting for my upgrade to come through to the VarioII. CP never got me lost, once.
Having studied the ALK website, there is only enhancements to the WM2003 version of CP - so can only be a good thing IMO. A lot will come down to personal choice however. The best for me is having a seperate Bluetooth GPS receiver so portability is fantastic.
You can always try out for a while and cancel if you've gone through web or telesales (you have 7 days).
Thanks for you reply. I can wait to get my hands on the device and try it all out, but Tmob seem to have no idea when it will come back into stock interestingly enough its still on their website and they are still taking orders. not sure why they would do such a silly thing.

I used to work for a network provider in the UK (O2) and its a simple case of making the numbers and worrying about delivery later.
I see you're based in the US, my comment re 7 day cool off period may not apply as its a UK based law as part of the Sale of Goods Act - you may want to check what your version is.
I don't have any experience of TMob over there at all. In the UK, I have found customer service to be excellent and if the phone is not in stock then its taken off the site.
I think you'll love it from my experience!
Sorry, newbie to this forum so still setting up profiles etc. but i am actually based in the Uk and have ordered it from the Tmob uk website so hopefully the 7 day period will apply + i think with their new street coverage you can also return the phone in 14 days if u find that the street coverages is not what u expected. (but i could be wrong.)

Spot on. Be aware though that any usage you incur (GSm/GPRS/3G) will be charged as normal.
UK customer services are great (in my opinion), i've only got good things to say about them.
let us know how you get on with CoPilot.
That is expected. after all i am using the service!! Do u know by any chance is making video calls in included in your allowance. I have taken the one which gives me £34 worth of allowance per month + wnw (£7.50),. but cant find anywhere where it says video calling in not included in this option!. So is it safe to assume that it is ?
I see t-mobile have removed the option of buying the Vario II without copilot!!!! i didnt really want Copilot as I've been using tomtom for many years and dont see why I have to pay for something I dont really need. Well at least I think they've removed the option as cant see it anywhere. Can someone point me in the right direction please.

My advice would be to accept the package and ebay the CoPilot reciever and software as it retails at nearly £200 i think so you would make a fair chunk of money back or just phone telesales and i'm sure they would be able to help. As has been said before the customer service is excellent i'm very happy with my plain old Vario and CoPilot its excellent software

Nope - Video calls are charged at 15ppm and are classed as outside the bundles - least that what I've got from the Tmob website. Probably best to have a scout round on their site - I found it in the faq section. Failing that check with CS folks.

UK T-Mobile vs. Vodafone Hermes

Is the Hermes provided by T-Mobile the same as Vodafone's in the UK? I'm with T-Mobile now (on a Wizard) and going to upgrade soon, but may switch providers if I get a better deal. The website descriptions have never been reliable, where some features are not mentioned or listed wrongly.
Yes they are, but why would you want to switch, the T-mobile tariffs seem so much better at the moment, especially with Web 'n' Walk!
Well they seem better on paper, but I've found when you call and say you want to switch they sometimes give you a better offer than the standard ones available. Equally someone you are thinking of switching to may give you a better offer than what's available on the websites.
I think the phones are the same, or can be made the same if you flash a new ROM.
If you are (or will be) a heavy wireless user then the T-mobile deal is probably the best. Try playing the game with Vodafone and also tell T-mobile that VOD have offerred a great deal for you (based on phone upgrade, contract length, cost of services etc) and see if what they come up with.
As for phone service quality - I've never really had much trouble with either provider in the UK, but this is mostly in built up areas - also if you travel, VOD definately works well for me overseas EVERYWHERE (but company pays).

Thanks for the advice
I've switched from Vodafone to T-Mobile... their customer retentions advisor admitted they had no way to match T-Mobile.
vodafone's customer service and pricing has gone down hill over the last few years, hence i changed to tmobile - who have been great and far cheaper, especially with web'n'walk/web'n'walk+.
i'm fairly sure that someone told me vodafone have recently taken picture messaging out of their bundles of texts/data, if that's your thing.
@agentp
That's true, MMS were removed from their all inclusive tariff since Sept 06.
They did offer me the V1605 as a free upgrade to remain with them and I got to keep my £25pm tariff.
I have since zapped it with the new WM6 roms that have been released here probably voiding any warranty and using it with an O2 sim.
@ kkhalil76
As already mentioned - the phones are identical in hardware terms and differ only cosmetically. I would probably say that Voda has a better network but T-mobile appear to offer better tariffs and there's nothing wrong with playing one network off against another.
Well in comparison i today signed up for a new contract with tmobile......web'n'walk is the deal breaker for me.
O2 shall be getting a call on monday for my pac code.
Also i get a free phone for the mrs.......................once its unlocked
i have an unlocked vodafone from UK. the v1605 is cosmetically similar to the HTC tytn save some branding here n there.
i personally prefer the current button layout than the t-mobile version (due to stubby fingers) hehe!

Good afternoon Joshua.
Thank you for your email.
I am afraid that we will not be releasing an update for our current range of phones to change them to Windows Mobile 6. It has been decided that we will leave our Windows Mobile 5 phones as they are for the remainder of their lives.
In terms of updates for our Vario, I would doubt that we will release any future ROMs for this phone. Generally speaking, we do not release any more ROMs for phones once the newer version of it comes out, in this case the Vario II. I won't say for definite that this will be the case, however this is what we have done in the past.

Hello
Thank you for your email.
We are currently carrying out testing on our handsets to check the compatibility, and the release of Windows Mobile 6 will be dependant on the results of this testing.
Unfortunately we have no timescales as to when this testing will be completed.
If it becomes available then this link will allow you to download the update

Possibly, sounds like a classic case of corporate "head does not know what mouth is saying"
I've just sent a request for T UK to confirm mobile 6 upgrades, could take a few days to get a response.
cool keep us updated mate, as if not i might switch to o2 again.. (my phones actually o2 xda mini S) but i use t-mobile simcard, and t-mobile rom is a good base.
Get the WM6 Faria Crossbow ROM, I've had it for a month, and it is by far the most complete ROM i've ever jacked around with. It also comes with a customization wizard for multiple carriers, which sets up MMS effortlessly. I would consider looking into that, rather than load any customized ROM with extra BS you dont need.

Thanks for your email Paul, with regards to a Windows Mobile 6 upgrade for the MDA Vario II.
I'm pleased you've emailed me as it allows me to look into this for you.
After checking this, I can confirm that T-Mobile won't be providing an upgrade for our current Windows Mobile 5 devices, including the Vario II.
We've launched Windows Mobile 6 on our MDA Touch handset and are planning on releasing a Vario III sometime later this year.
We should also be releasing further handsets with Windows Mobile 6 later in 2007 and 2008.
There has also been a few incidents of customers downloading the upgrade version of Windows Mobile 6 from T-Mobile USA, however I would strongly recommend not to do this as this could damage your handset and invalidate your warranty.
Thanks again for taking the time to email me about this Paul, I'm pleased I've been able to help.

So there you have it, T-Mobile UK will not provide Mobile 6 for Mobile 5 handsets
Doesn’t bother me, gives me an extra bargaining chip when I want to upgrade, still I doubt I would move from T, their data plans are by far the best out there at the moment, and I'm a very heavy data user.
Time to start softening them up a bit to get a cut rate Vario III
For the time being though I'm happy with WM5, bugs an all
