pim.vol - can you move it to the SD card for good?

Question - my pim.vol file is around 18MB (4000 contacts, month worth of meetings etc).
Has anyone figured how to not only move pim.vol to the storage card (easy) but have the PIM use the SD version - freeing up valuable Universal memory?
Hope someone can help.
Andrew - Sydney Australia (picked up a Universal in the UK on my last business trip).
U can only copy it to SD Card...use default file explorer....
have you searched the registry, I haven't tried yet but it should be somewhere in it...
Is there a way to make the pim.vol-file stay at the SD card ??
Sorry, one too many !
registry
searched the whole registry - nothibg there but I have seen various web postings pointing to the fact that pim.vol is loaded during startup - need to be able to change where it is loaded from. ideas??
I did notice that there are a few pim*.dll's in the registry I wonder if one of those can point to the location on the SD card....
restore pim.vol
I was able to backup pim.vol to SD card, but when I try to restore it, it gives a sharing violation, even after I kill all programs. Is there a way to do that?

Click to collapse
rename pim.vol to anything else, copy pim.vol from storage card, reboot, delete old pim.vol

Backup contacts to SD card before hard reset?

Anyway I can easily copy my contacts to my SD card before i hard reset so I can copy them back afterwards???
You mean OTHER than using ActiveSync and Outlook????
Technically Jeyo Mobile Companion 1.1 can do it, though when performing my text backups I've always found that the Contact feature causes problems.
Pocket Informant or ContactBreeze probably has those functions, also.
Cheers

Just copy the pim.vol file at the root of your file system to SD. Use the internal file explorer to do this. Do not use resco.
To restore, rename the pim.vol pim.old before copying the old file to the root. Soft reset after this. Don't use any other program than internal file explorer or it won't work.
thaihugo, thanks that was the answer I was looking for

Problem with me (and perhaps many other) is that i chagne from on rom to other rom every day. im tired of backing up and restoring contacts from SD card. so i am instrested in a software that can save contact to SD card and search and load a contact from sd card again directly.(it my dream it may not be possible). but i hope at least someone may come up with a solution.
wow a reply after 6 years . as far as i can remember the good old WM times, DotNetFreds PIM Backup was the! solution for backup&restore questions.

How to free up more memory?

can someone direct me on how to free up memory on my Hermes?
My device memory is very low, I already cleared my cookies and history in Internet explorer settings.
The memory got used up when I received almost 30 e-mails to my device. Where is the e-mails files stored?
tnx in advance
cliffy101
Not 100% sure but try the My Documents folder in phone storage.
You can set the Hermes to store attachements on the sd card for emails/mms.
If you can't find where the emails are stored but want to keep them then save them as .txt files on the sd card.
Try to install all 3rd party apps on the Memory card, you can transfer any apps you already have installed by cutting them out of the My Programs folder on the device and pasting them to a My Programs folder on the sd, you just need to send a shortcut to the windows startmenu programs folder. Use Total Commander (free) or Resco Explorer if you have it.
Cheers...
tnx
tnx, I 've got all programs on sd card already, only thing is I cannot figure out where e-mail files are stored or how to set it so attachments are stored on sdcard.
tnx for advice so far ...
Go to messaging>Menu>options>Storage. It should have a box that can be checked saying "When available use storage card to store attachments". Tick it if unticked.
Cheers...

[Q] Import Contacts

I had to do a hard reset and I have lost all of my contacts. Before doing the reset I saved all the files on my HD2 to my computer.
Anyone know where contacts file is located so I can import it?
you can use pim backup to save your contacts and many other things
Wasn't aware of that one, will definitely use that in the future.
Given that I wasn't wise enough to back up with PIM first, and only saved all the files onto my computer...any idea how to restore contacts now?
What format did you save them onto your computer in? You might be able to import them into Outlook and synchronize them.
I just copied the folder in the root directory and the storage card folder and pasted them onto pc
Which folder? To my knowledge there is no such folder.
contacts are not stored in a folder. They are stored in a "database". The file is PIM.VOL located at the root of the device. Theoritically, I guess you could copy it to the PC (or SD card) and overwrite it after a hard reset. Except it's locked by the system, so you would first have to kill the handle to the file. Many tools allow this kind of trick on PC's but I haven't found one on WM yet
phone contacts
I am using HyperdroidV1.7 with windows Mobile Artemis V 50. Unfortunately I lost my phone contacts under windows. Using android all contacts are still there. Is there a way to copy them back to simcard using android or copy files back to windows mobile ?
Thanks for your help.

X10 Contacts to Google ?

Hello Guys,
on my X10 i have many contacts on my simcard ...
How can i duplicate or sync them with my google Account?
follow these steps
first of all take a backup with backup & Restore app in case u faild.
here u go
-save it on phone memory
-backup to SDCard
-delete contact from phone memory
-Restore contacts from SDCard but..when u restore them choose google account not phone memory
then you can do the sync
plz note: if u want to add any new contact make sure that u choose to add it on google account not phone memory..
You can import them in the phone. Make a backup on SD card as vcf file. Then open gmail/contacts on the computer, click import contacts and choose the vcf file.
The vcf file you can find in sdcard/system/pim
Edit: Oh, i'm little bi too late but however. This is an optional way.
Tank you
