Recording MPEG-4 Video with SD Memory Card - MDA II, XDA II, 2060 General

Did anyone try to record MPEG-4 video with XDA II on your SD memory card?
I've tried Toshiba 256MB/128MB and Sandisk 128MB SD memory, and the frame skip rate is quite high. The video seems like being recorded at only 2~5 FPS. If you record the video for more than 2 mintues, you will find that the voice doesn't sync with the motion.
The maximum data transfer rate of Toshiba 256 SD memory is about 2MB/s. Thus I think this problem isn't due to the "relatively" slow transfer rate of my SD card(compared to the "fast" sd card of transfer rate up to 10MB/s).
Is there anyone who has the experience of recording MPEG-4 video on the SD card and suffers the same problem with me?

2 Questions and I will test this for you:
1. How do you record directly to the storage card?
2. How do you get sound with your movie?
Thanks,
arebelspy

Bump.
Can anyone answer these questions?

Hi,
To record a video directly to a storage card, in Camera mode, click the settings icon (the first from left to right icons at the buttom), then select Tools > Options... > Video. In there, at the buttom of the page, you'll see Folder and Change..., click it to choose the destination folder on Storage Card, and then click ok to save the settings.
To enable sound, above the Folder, there's a checkbox to chose "Recording with audio." Check this box to include sound in your video recording.
HTH.

Guh, I'm an idiot, only saw the options icons on the lower right.
Thanks so much for the reply, I appreciate it.
As far as the voice recording, anyone know if the system volume (device, not phone) has to be turned on? Will it work if it's on mute (or vibrate)? If not, does it make a difference if it's on the lowest volume notch vs. the highest?
I would run some tests myself, but I can't right now (XDA II isn't accessible atm).
Thanks for the reply.

Sorry, arebelspy.
I was late to see your post.
Thank you for the reply, joparp.
Can anyone else help me with this issue?
Your assistance is highly appreciated.

And no problem here too, will find some time to test recording long video on SD.
Cheers.

I just got my 512MB Panasonic SD memory card(10MB/sec) tonight, and got it to test with the XDA II video recording function.
I found that the difference really existed when I recorded MPEG-4 video with a 2MB/s SD memory card compared to a 10MB/s SD memory card.
The video recording process is much smoother if you use the 10MB/s SD card to record the video, but once the video is recorded, there is no difference whether you are playing the video file on a 2MB/s SD card or on a 10MB/s SD card.
The conclusion is: the recording process is the key. You should get a faster card when recording a MPEG-4 video file.

re
omg I have only just realised this thanks to this thread. I have been recording vid on my xda 2 stored on my SD card, and the framerate and sound quality has been poor, but never had video on a PDA before so didn't really think too much of it.
Just completed some tests recording to the My Documents/pictures file which was the default location I think and video is superb in comparison, DOH.
In future all my vids will be recorded in phone memory, I'll just have to move them to storage card afterwards to avoid space problems.
N1, I offer no help or suugestions just confirmation of your own findings,
Cheers, Shire

No, but why do you want to do that?, it's a waste of space, you can use .Mid, .Wav and .Wma (wma sounds great and occupies less space than .mp3) You can convert from mp3 to wma with free tool.

You can record video until the memory runs out. You can use external SD memory, so that means that you can use a 2 gig SD memory to record virtually for hours. The highest resolution is 320x240 at 15 fps. Let me tell you that it records the best video that I have ever seen on a mobile pda/phone!. And I reccomend you to purchase a hi-data rate SD card.

The XDA2 is capable of browsing the web like a regular computer, I mean, you can surf virtually any website. But I recomend you to use a better browser like Netfront. Please consider the screen size, where you will have to scroll vertically and horizontally at times (even with Netfront wich really does a really nice job squeezing web pages to minimize horizontal scrolling), but still it's not as comfortable as a PC screen. But the nice thing is being able to browse the 'net on-the-go wirelessly!!!
In conclussion, even though it's not a desktop or laptop replacement, the XDA2 is a really nice information/communication tool I can't live without.
Good luck!

I wouldn't recommend recording videos via the Storage Card... I did this once and the video was really choppy and the audio-video sync was off by about 5 secs.

Recommended Bitrate for good sound quality

Hi,
I was wondering if any of you guys know whats like the ideal bitrate of a file (especially mp3 files) before putting them onto the phone. I'm using this great software called cdex that allows me to downsize a file majorly by reducing the bitrate. But am I compromising on sound quality for space on my card by doing this? The software turns a 6MB mp3 file into like 3MB. I remember reading somewhere that most handheld devices (phones, MP3 players etc) cant play files of a bitrate higher than 80-90kbps. Meaning u cant tell the difference in sound quality after 90 kbps. Is that really true? If someone out there knows....please do let me know.
Thanks in advance

Man, the guy who wrote it probably was from XV century
I'm always copying the same files I have on PC, without converting or something. Just copy - paste. Elf supports SD cards up to 16 GB, so I don't think file size is a problem. If you really want to convert files, use 128 kbps, it should sound good and don't take too much space.

Another Perfect Video converter for our X1s

Just found this last night and don't know if anyone posted about this before, but it works flawlessly with my X1
Program: Format Factory
Link: http://www.formatoz.com/download.html
Just set it for Sony Ericsson X1 as your default if you want, then select any file(s) you wanna convert, and BAM!!!! 1G of video converted in 5mins and reduced to about 150mb...Hope that this helps anybody else here like it helped me...Alohas for now.
P.S. Forgot to mention that this program only converts video files, but pictures as well as music files...just about anything...
Thanks. Am downloading it and will give it a go shortly.
What do you use to play the files on the X1
It appears that the program sets the X1's res at 320 x 240, I find that an unnaceptable quality for encoding to the X1.
It's a nice program though. I 'll work on custome settings . .
I use it to convert a video in 480*272 (I don't want 320*240!!!) and the audio is not synchronised with the video...
I use "HD Encoder.exe" found some where around here. it works fricking great for high def video like movies, divx, etc...
google it up!
You think you'd encode a video from 1, 2, 4G fo a bout an hours or so and then outputs to a file about 650MB for an X1? isn't it a little too big? I mean to phone came out with just 4G you'd only have enough for 3 movies. is there another lower file size converter?
Thanks for information

Sorry, but I believe that the biggest they have for the X1 is 16GB...as for me, I'm using an 8GB microSDHD card and it's way more than enough because I only watch movies on my phone only during my class breaks which are about 15-30mins. What's so hard in transferring the files to/from your memory card anyways Transferring 4GB of files onto my card only takes me 2-3mins.

I'm also trying to find the sweet spot by manually setting it, but I'm having a difficult time doing so
My recommendation? Stick to Projection's HD video converter. See sticky for more info.

Yep....does the job.
Or if you can find the download link on their site and like to tweak your videos to the 9th degree you can use super
Super and Xillsoft are the two i used before i found the projection one. Projection thank you so much you are ftw!
Why take the trouble and convert anything at all?
Just use the coreplayer! it will play your basic xvid etc video's perfectly.
Yeah.. it's 700mb for a movie.. but it's not that you need to stack 20 movies on your phone

you can always set a lower video recording quality to get a smaller size.
another way, you can expand the phone's storage using a USB OTG cable, but I'm not sure how to have the default camera app saving to the external storage, or you can try 3rd party camera apps.
