Vodafone and Internet?! - MDA, XDA, 1010 Software Upgrading

Egads !!
I didn't check anything out about whether another provider would or wouldn't work until I came across this site looking for info. on how to get the xda to work connecting to the internet using activesync and the cradle.
So two question here really -
1. Will the xda work with Vodafone?
and
2. How do I configure it to connect to the internet using the cradle and Activesync?
Anyone that could help on these points I would greatly appreciate the advice

Yes. You may need to "unlock" it if your phone is "SIMlocked". There's plenty of messages on this forum describing how to do this.

Open the ActiveSync main window, 'Tools menu', 'Options', 'Rules' tab and make sure 'Pass Through connection' is set to 'The Internet', and then when your desktop is connected, all should be automagic.

FANTASTIC! Thanks for the answer to number 2
I'll let you know how I get on with number 1 when they change me over!

Well there we go !!
Unlocked the SIM straight away and the VODAFONE SIM card works perfectly !!
Thanks for help
Now I'm thinking of experimenting and installing a Special ROM ... hmm .. wonder if the SMS, GPRS and other little qwerks will effect me?!

Anyone else having GPRS problems ?

Hi,
I would like to know if anyone else has GPRS problems with the QTEK 9100 ? It hangs up as it wants (once every 10min, once every 24h) If it is connected and I want to sync, it doesn't work, I have to hang up in order to reconnect and sync.
Anyone knows something about this ?
Micman
I guess it depends on the operator. GPRS on my 9100 doesn't want to work with MTS. Megafon SIM card solves the issue.
Don't got that problem, got another problem. How do you disable the gprs connection easy ? any know can't find a way to do it easy.
Right now i need to go to /settings/connections/gprs and start changing the settings and push cancel to disable it.
Try this one: http://www.gb-soft.cz/XDAII/default.htm
Works very well for mine , even under WM5
Need answers , hit me ;-)

Just press and hold the red end key for more than 3 seconds and the GPRS-connection is terminated. I have even tried to install GB softtweak wich is able even i WM5.0 to bring the disconnect button to the gprs-bubble and it work.

I guess Tver's MTS GPRS differs from Moscow's. I heard they're testing EDGE here. This might be the cause. 9100 hangs on GPRS every time until reset or flight mode on/off.
Yes, the same situation...
In very random moments GPRS hangs ... I'm with Vivatel, Bulgaria...
Have you found solution ?

Hi all,
I've spent the last 3 weeks searching through everything so as not to waste anyones time with a simple question but to no avail.
I've been given an XDA II from a family member as they have upgraded to the Exec and I have been using it as a PDA only. Well I see that Orange have some good deals on the go and so decide to use it as a phone/Internet enabled PDA.
I've unlocked it (many times now) got 2003SE on it and have put the correct MMS and GPRS settings in (The ones from Shadamehr). I've checked with Orange and GPRS is enabled on my account with them (PAYG at the mo) but for some reason the same thing that was happening when I first got it pops up
"Cannot connect
There is no modem at the above number..."
So best my small mind can figure is that somehow the 'phone part' of the PDA isn't working. I've tried other sims in it and they don't work either (o2 and Three - but I think Three is funny anyways). Is there something wrong with the actual phone bit?
It's a legit XDA with the M1000 ROM upgrade from the orange site which has made it 2003SE
Does anyone have any knowledge about how I can get my PDA to be a phone? It was once before (but with O2)
Thanks in advance for any and all help.

No modem at above number
Thanks for the link, but believe me I've tried this. I retried it to be sure just now.
"No modem at above number" is what I get after the XDA II tries to connect.
I have no phone reception whatsoever, no internet and no SMS.
My XDA II just works as a PDA with no communication possiblities apart from USB cradle.
Again, thanks in advance for any and all help with this.
-o0zy
If there's no phone reception, and no GPRS, how do you expect to connect to one?
Not to be mean or anything, but aren't your hopes of connecting a little farfetched if all the systems you're trying to use are down?

Your not being mean, believe me after a month of searching through here and SPV developers anything that wuld resolve this issue would be appreciated.
Why would the phone element of my XDA just stop working? I can only imagine some sort of Hardware fault but I'm a thorough bunny and would like to make sure of this. A diagnostic app or some way of reading the phone element like a device driver would be handy.
So in brief, why has my phone part of my XDA II stopped working and how do I switch it back on again (if this is at all possible)?
Thank you for your replies thusfar Cynagen, I shall start to ask these questions in the Himalaya forum also now since it seems model specific and not network related.
Any and all further assistance is much appreciated.

Can you point a link to the download that you mention in the FAQ.
I have the updated ROM but unable to get the GPRS working for T-Mobile USA. Many thanks in advance.
alright i got my GPRS back up and running.
i just added a new connection, called it T-MOBLE GPRS and set the access point to internet2.voicestream.com.
most people on this forum mention how this particular ROM seems to run faster, but i havent really noticed any performance increases yet
Possible help GPRS, etc
This might be of benefit to some with the GPRS trouble after update.
1. I did the Imate ROM update and had lots of trouble with GPRS MMS etc..
2. Didn't know how to fix so - I started over...
3. I installed the Qtek ROM and had the same connection issues.
4. Called T-Mobile - got a 3rd level tec and he suggested something I had not heard before. Now keep in mind that I had reset several times hard and soft. He had me go inot Comm and hit the phone icon - and turn it off and on. I am not sure exactly why - but it worked! His explanation was that since I was going back and forth between work and home that the phone (which is supposed to switch automatically didn't and) got locked somehow. I am pretty new to all of this but already did 3 ROM updates - so learning a lot.
5. Now all my connections work the way they are suppose to. Only ONE connection and that is wap.voicestream.com as it should be. My WiFi connection is blazingly fast! I am a happy camper - but I went around and around with this for about 2 days before getting a tec that gave me this advice.
Perhpas someone can tell me which is newer (better) the Qtek or the Imate ROM??
Thanks,
Shep
ok i have searched all over howard forums and here about the GPRS settings for T-Mobile USA.
in one particualr post it mentions you have to set the appropriate access point for your type of internet service. Personally, i have the T-Mobile total internet for $29.99.
I have applied both of these setting as my access point
internet2.voicestream.com and wap.voicestream.com
both of these settings allowed me to connect to the GPRS network, so i guess my question is which setting should i be using????
T-Mobile is shipping all these devices with wap.voicestream.com, and has opened the ports for people on the "real" internet service using it.
If you use "internet2", you will have problems with MMS, since you can't send MMS through that AP. There are workarounds for this but they are messy. My recommendation is that you use wap.

Problem with internet connection

Hi i don't succeed to connect anymore because after the attemps of hookup the line it send this error message : The modem for the answer is disconnected. Please help me
I would not like to have to proceed with an hard reset to avoid to lose all the formulations. Thanks
Nobody can help me ? Thanks
Well i dont know if this helps, but i had the same problem. Connection to the internet didnt worked probably and the modem arent available.
So i called O2 and asked if the service may be down but it wasnt their fault. I had top hard reset my device and it worked after that again. Yes i loosed all my software etc. but the modem vent back. So i didnt need to send it in for repairing. After I changed my ROM to iMate i never had this issue again (previous ROM O2 Shipping...).
I only can recommend to backup all what you need and do the hard reset, it will help.
Sorry for no better solution, but i guess you want your GPRS/UMTS/G3 Modem back to work

Could you please post the "Entire" error message your connection buble produces to verify your issue? Meaning ... try to connect to your isp and then if it fails the buble shows a error message at top of your device.
Thanks.

Yes it try to connect at my isp and then it disconnect and at top of the device : Impossible to connect : The modem for the answer is disconnected !!! Thanks
I suppose you are trying to connect with a clean device (after hardware reset). For me it sounds that your modem is not proberly installed and the software having trouble to bind the modem. If you are using the original ROM i would suggest to change the device with your ISP, depending how old it is. If you dont get the device changed, try another ROM (iMate i suggest for you). More help i cant provide because my problem vent away after the hardware reset. :?
Please tell us the ROM, the operator you're using, and the APN.
This happens usually for a mis-configuration problem... and for Italians using TIM it happens when you config MMS after a successful internet configuration.
The MMS provider becomes the default internet provider and the APN are difefrent
Look at the message"connecting to ........." ? what?

*sergiopi: it would be good if you guys compare the settings to reduce any misconfigurations as long you both have the same provider. Maybe a good Idea would be to post your settings in here, so deika95 could compare it to his settings, no :?:

Hi Sergiopi, no i think that is an operator problem but it's strange because until yesterday it has worked. My operator is TRE and the apn is tre.it I try to connect directly from the formulations of connection. But the strange thing it's that with other operators it works fine !!!!
sounds like a misconfiguration problem, no need to exchange your device for that, just configure the right settings for your operator.

I agree but there is something much better: I-Mate develop a multi-operator self configuration .cab only for Italy. Just install it, drop the sim in the socket, turn it on and....
Works only with I-mate IMEI's
Other are quite easy to config
As an example: with TIM just insert ibox.tin.it as APN in My ISP configuration and select GPRS UMTS as carrier...

However I don't want to change rom to avoid to lose the guarantee. To this point I believe that i have to bring it in assistance. However it's very strange that with TIM and WIND it works while with TRE it doesn't go. I have also asked if the parameters of connection were changed but they have told me that the apn is always tre.it
If you send to the service center and you say: "It works with TIM and WIND and isn't working with TRE..." this will be the first face and the second will be
Be sure: if works with TIM and WIND ISN'T a TyTN technical problem!

GPRS Setting with FIDO

I'm using Cingular 8525 (unlocked) in Canada with Fido sim, where can i change the GPRS setting on the phone? i don't see any place that can change it? thanks in advance!
look what I found when I googled Fido "GPRS Settings"
http://www.dslreports.com/faq/7418
In any case, Ross Barkman's page is the best for finding your telco settings.
http://www.taniwha.org.uk/gprs.html
To change your settings you have 3 options (I've included details instructions so follow them carefully):
Option 1.
1. Go the box the phone came in
2. Pull out the little book that says user manual
3. Open the book up
4. Read it.
Option 2.
1. Scroll to the top of this page
2. Click on XDA-Wiki
3. Go the Hermes Section
4. Read it.
5. Read it again, so you understand everything not just the GPRS problem.
Option 3 (and I'm gonna hear about this from pof).
1. Click Start
2. Click Settings
3. Click Con... Argh, I can't sorry man... you're gonna have to pick 1 or 2.
Forgive me pof, I started feeling sorry for the newbie. I promise I won't do it again!
thanks! i already know what the setting is, but i'm just wondering that will Cingular allow me to change the GPRS settings?
If the phone is unlocked, there is nothing stopping you from changing anything on the phone. For all purposes Cingular is just a name written on your phone, Cingular the company has nothing to do with you anymore unless you have a cingular SIM in your phone.
Thanks for replied, the problme is, the Cingular stock rom doesn't have any icon that let me to change the GPRS setting! there should be a "Network Wizard" on Setting-->Connection , but there is non! when i click on GPRS setting, it only allowing me choose either "PAP authentication" or "CHAP authentication" . i have been playing the GPRS setting for a long time, but didn't get anyting, so should i flash to other rom? thanks in advance!
We are having the same problem
I have an 8125 running with a Movistar Mexico SIM and last Sunday I got its replacement: an 8525, I spent most of the Sunday (and the several days before) reading threads and doing all procedures to unlock it until I succeeded, so now I have an 8525 unlocked supre CID and all that ... "running" with the same SIM and same GPRS set up but I haven´t been able to navigate internet on GPRS (stalls in the "opening" status), I installed spb GPRS Monitor and the traffic is zero Kb on all tries that I´ve made to connect to the internet. I set also my Gmail account which is set up to retreive amails every 15min and although generates GPRS traffic the behavior is totally different as in my 8125. About MS Messenger and Hotmail the GPRS connection hasn´t been imposible. I´m a newbie I know it!! Thank you Bny! I do know how to make it and also set the proper strings in my case APN would be internet.movistar.mx and the user name & paswrord is movistar. That´s not really the problem, in fact I do know that I have a connection to my network, the problem is that something happen 8525 than doesn´t allow me to route my connections thru other routes but the one that Cingular has a preset. I really don´t know if is it the Ext ROM, my SIM card (not a 3G card) or the network itself since is not a 3G network !!!?
have any of you guys considered doing a hard reset and then soft reset before the 3 second customization? that way none of the cingular stuff gets installed?!?

I suppose there could be a number of reasons for this. But here is a consideration from my experience albeit on a different network. I entered all the details for my O2 connection as published on several different internet sites. Initially I could not get beyond "connecting" but found a minor error in what I had entered. Now I got as far as "Opening" but never actually open a site. I gave up but happened across a website that suggested that if you get that far i.e. "to opening" then perhaps the only fault would be the port number in proxy settings for HTTP. I checked and it was correctly set to "80". I did searches on the internet and found one that suggested port "8080" and it worked straight away. I only suggest that you check the port number and whether there are alternatives if you are getting as far as "opening".

Note two "connections" and if you do you get a page titled connections and Two headings 1. My ISP and 2. My Work Network

Thanks Mike and shogunmark! I´ll try the trick to avoid the customisation from Cingular; as far the port setting that´s a good point, however my screen for connection settings only shows 2 tabs: 1)Tasks and 2) Advanced, the 3rd tab (Proxy) that is present in my 8125 is missing in my 8525. Any ideas to make it appear or change the port? Thanks again you guys!
I did it, but it did not work.....
I just tried but it didn´t work either.... let´s see what´s next. Thank You!

I did what shogunmark suggested and it didn´t work either, I´m wondering waht would be the correct proxy server configuration, besides the port number I really don´t know the type of connection (http, wap, sec wap or scocks 4/5), neither the server name
I made the connection
I allways had the right "parameters" to set a proper connection, but I realized that the connection speed is extremely slow (5 Kbps at the most). I open another thread related to the use of a G3 device with a non G3 SIM / network. Thank you all for your help.
