upgrading ROM - power problem - MDA, XDA, 1010 Software Upgrading

Hi,
I've bought a XDA that just came with the cable to sync it to USB - no cradle.
It charges over the USB connection. When I try and upgrade the ROM using the exe's from the kitchen, it claims ""Please plug the power adaptor into your Pocket PC"
So I guess its looking for the cradle and the AC supply to that, but can't find it, as its over USB.
Anyone got any ideas how to get round this? Don't really want to have to buy a cradle etc?
Thanks,
Ben

why not? A/C will charge your pda Twice as fast!
if u dont want to spend that much, buy a charge/usb cable
the one that u can plug a power transformer INTO the usb cable
$14 from local tmobile store.
other than That! u realy would have to crack-open your charge plug case, and solder an + into the right pin... all info you need is in this forum. research it

Thanks.
After reading a bit, it looks like I can get a XDA cradle for approx $33 - what voltage/polarity etc AC adaptor do I need for the cradle?
I'll do some research on the soldering business tho
Thanks
Ben

$33? is that U.S Dollars??
i got mine thru ebay for $8 +sh
wich had the cradle, power supply, usb cable, power plug for europe...
try ebay! www.ebay.com

I have always flashed the rom through a data/charger usb cable. I have no idea why yours wont.

Well, thats interesting. I just tried it again, and it works....
Now got WM2003 on.
But a strange problem, I've had it plugged into USB *all* night, with the amber charging light... About... 7 hours. Its still displaying amber charging light.
The battery was almost out, but is this typical?
Thanks for the suggestion ntabikha, I'll have a look on ebay. Yes it was USD.

XDA II Charging

I read a few articles about the auto sync (usb) cable.
There seems to be a "bug" when charging with this cable the battery charges till it's full (100%) and than discharges the battery again.
Is this is the same with the usb cradle?
Thanks
Panja
Is the cable you are talking about a charger to run from the USB port of a desktop to the XDA, without the need for the charger? Where can I get one? I only got 1 power charger & keep it at home (where I dont have a pC) & my cradle at work (where I do), it would be nice to be able to charge at work too!
Does anyone know where to get a new charger adapter plug from (the one to use for charging without the cradle) mine is getting a bit knackered!
cheers!
Don't know m8.
I was just asking around because I read stuff about it on some pages.
try www.expansys.com
Can someone answer my question.
Thanks
Has anybody used a usb sync & charger cable for the Himalaya (XDAII) ? I would like to buy one which works for sure. The one from Lil'sync did a very bad job cos it sync's only without charging.

I was the one who started the thread about this problem with the sync'n'charge cable. If you read my posts in the following thread, you will see that the cradle doesn't have the charging problem:
Sync-charge cable charges to 100%, then discharges
thanks for the reply m8
Will be looking @ your thread in a few secs.
cheers

Oh No ..... I didn't realise this ... and I've got one on the way to me. By the way I take the cradle to work every day but leave the mains adaptor plugged in at home. The cradle with just the sync cable is quite capable of charging the phone at work, and I'm sure once it gets to 100% it stays there.

JasJar won't charge any more...any ideas?

I just posted on the accessories forum about my experience with the Brodit active holder that I purchased. Mounted it in my car, and plugged the brodit charger in. Fuse in car charger went bang (not literally). Now I know it's not my power adapter in the car, as I've been using another JasJar charger and GPS charger for ages, so I went to Halfords and bought some replacement fuses. Tried them in the charger. Every one died too instantly.
I assumed the charger must be faulty, and arranged to send the holder back to Clove to replace it. It wasn't until I plugged my JasJar into the normal charger last night that I discovered it was no longer charging at all. I tried unplugging and replugging. I tried using the USB cable in my pc. Nothing works. Even the other car charger won't charge it any more.
I'm guessing I now have to send my JasJar to HTC for repairs and be without it for a couple of weeks. I'm not too happy about it though, and thought I would ask here first if this has happened to anyone else and if there might be a way to get it charging again without having to send it away.
i had a similar problem, i went to france with a charger that had a changable head, with pins for the different countries on click in plates, and on the top was a usb socket.
i took a standard usb to mini usb cable with me figuring this is a usb charger like the one that came with my phone but no, i couldnt get it charging, then after 12 hrs of it refusing, it eventually kicked back in, i sussed you had to use it like plugging it into a pc, ie, it turn it off, wait, then plug it in. bingo it started charging again.
its working like activesync, right pain, shoulda just taken me charger and a mains convrter
sorry it doesent really help but its poss related

similar problem. but i change the port miniusb. 30 dolares in mexico.
no problem, is easy. and now is working ok.
Well I've sent it in for repairs now. Couldn't get the thing to charge.
this forum is amazing...if there is an information available, you can bet it you can find it here...:
thanks carnivor: I had the same problem, but just was not smart enough to get the idea to shut it off and then on...with your help i solved the problem...i still don't get it, why it did charge with the original charger or with the usb cable from the pc and not with the generic usb charger and that same cable....and actually: it depended on the ROM installed: with the qtek rom it did not matter, with the t-mobile it did..
anyway: now it works. thanks!
I notice that the power lead is thinner than a usb lead so there may be less wires inside, ie 2 + ground instead of 4 + ground, the lack of TX and RX connections may well be what causes it. Im not going to hack into the charger cable just yet to find that out.
Intresting about the rom versions changing the fact if you can have device on before sync or not. Im not going to reflash now with an update around the corner im just going to wait for that.

yes, but interestingly it also doesn't work with the same cable that syncs and charges from the pc, when this cable is connected to the lighter or the generic USB charger...so the mess starts already in the charger.
but bottomline: as long as there's a workaround...

USB Charging...or not!

I have tried charging my XDA Trion (Hermes) via a USB 12 car adapter. There appears to be charge to the cable, but the XDA is not charging.
Th ebattery level was low, but I charge dit up to over 40% and it still didn't kick in.
Any ideas ?
TIA, Davebo.

There is an issue re. in car charging when the device only charges when off. See the link in my signature and find the section on charging problems. May or may not be relevant to your case. Some leads have a slightly different configuration regarding earthing which can cause problems.

Mike,
Thanks for the reply. I think it is how the pins are set up. Apparently mains chargers uses different pins to synch cables.
In the end I had to boot up my laptop and charge the handset off the USB (same cable!) from that.
I have ordered a car cradle, which I will need anyway. Hopefully, that will have the correct pins. (Or it will be going back!).
Cheers, DBo.

matey i bought a car charger from ebay only a few quid- an it charges the device while the device is on-
if you still need another charger I can try searching for the one i got from ebay? let me know.
Ta
N2h,
Ta very much, I already have one on order though now.
I went for one from the same place I got my Wizard one from (PDAMods). It was about £25 + P&P. The upside is it will fit the limpet-like screen mount I have. (The standard ones are typically rubbish IMHO).
Thanks anyway, DBo.
weird
I have found that it doesn't charge oif it is 'on' and that I have to do a soft reset before it will work whenever I change between plug and car. It drives me mad.
Faria's WM6 ROM had a fix in it for this - the HTC original ROMs do some sort of checking for a particular pin to be grounded, and if it isn't, it doesn't allow a charge. But if you turn the phone completely off, or soft reset, it works for a while until you disconnect or put the phone in standby. Nobody knows what Faria did to fix this, but I can verify that suddenly my old car charger worked. Unfortunately other issues in Faria's ROM made me move on a to a more stable software version.

XDA Mini S + USB Charging

Not sure if this is right part of forum, but here it goes.
I am having an issue with the charging of my O2 XDA Mini.
If my battery dies, with still a small bit of power left in it (enough to get splash screen) and I go to charge it works fine no problem. Now over the wkend my phone died on my and I left it till this afternoon when I tried to turn on, it wouldnt turn on at all (not even splash) because obviously the battery is completely dead. Now when I go to plug it in, it wont charge, from USB cradle, the little orange light to say that its charging doesnt even come on.
Last time this happened I eventually got it to work via a friends socket (plug) charger, rather than USB, charger. Is there any reason for this or anyway that it can be fixed that even when the battery is completely dead I can charge it from my USB cradle.
Any help would be apreciated.
Thank you in advance
Rattlehead
Sorry to bump this, but does anyone have any idea. I beleve the cause of this is due to the fact the USB power from the PC isnt enough to get the charging process started, is there anyway to get this done via the cradle.
Thanks
Rattlehead
You'll need to use a charger that plugs into a wall socket I'm afraid. This happened to me once & that was the only way I could get it to work. If you search on Google, you'll find methods that involve a stripped down usb cable, but a wall charger is definately easier.
Good luck.
Should any usb based wall charger work?
I have a Motorolla one and Ive tried that but that didnt work.
I know for a fact that when I use my friends one it works and will charge, but he aint round for another 2 weeks

You cannot charge a totally flat battery through usb cable using PC,cuz it only supplies 0.5(500)amp,whereas to get the dead battery back into charging,it requires a supply charge of 1.0(1000)amp,secondly you can only charge the phone via usb if it's working normal and not when it's dead,as you cannot boot into OS.
Therefore,it'll only start to charge with a 'Wall Charger' which only supplies 1.0 amp, your friend's Wall (Mains) charger must be suppling a 1.0 amp charge. You cannot even charge it with the Motorola usb charger cuz it also supplies only 0.5 amp.So try to get a Wall (Mains) charger to get it start charging.
OR,
Yes! you can Jump start the battery using Motorola charger, but you'll have to sacrifice the motorola charger to do it,as you'll have to cut off the usb plug of the charger cable end and attach the 'Red' wire to the '+' (Possitive) connector of the battery and black wire to the '-' (Negative) connector of the battery and give Shock Charge to the battery for 10 seconds, repeat this for 4/5 times,it'll give the battery a jump start and will increase the 'Pulse' level of the battery, after that put it in the phone and check if it loads up,if it does then you can charge it via usb cable connected with PC.
Good luck
BTW ! there's an excellent thread regarding charging to avoide the battery to go flat and saving from getting into this situation,it wud be very info for you, check it also :-

zabardast_1 ,
You are the Guru ~
sorry couldnt reply to you before now, zabardast_1 thank you so much.
Thats great will have a look tonight and see what I can do
Here is a simple way of solving the problem, go and buy a charger, they cost next to nothing.

My Universal won't charge from the AC USB recharger - only from my comp's USB port!

Greetings,
2 weeks ago I bought used Qtek 9000 and since I didn't have any problems until I had tried to recharge it by regular AC USB recharger from the wall outlet.
I'm stuck to my PC every day so I didn't have a need to recharge it that way, when I connect it to my comp recharging works fine.
I thought that maybe that recharger was broken so I had bought new one but still I cannot recharge my phone from the wall.
I tried 4 different USB cables (every single one works fine between HTC & PC but with chargers - no go) and a few different outlets in my home but none of it work.
The ROM is Ranju v7.1 if that matters but I really don't know what to try else.
If someone knows what should I try next please suggest, I appreciate it very much.
Cheers.
Maybe your charger is broken. In fact, almost certain, since you can link up to your PC, so it can't be the port, nor the datacable. This means that it must be the charger.
Try measuring the voltage on the power cable's end, and if it shows nil, you got your culprit!
It can also be, that your USB-charger does not provide enough power to charge your Universal.
You should not simply take ANY USB-charger (i.e. from an mp3 player). Try to use one with at least 1A.
Cheers,
vma
Thanks for your replies,
I have two USB rechargers, the first I got with a device, (the guy told me that was the original but obviously he screwed me) that has 500mA only,
the second one I had bought myself is weaker, only 400mA.
I'll look for the 1A USB recharger, now.
Cheers.
lol i just found this out last night. its good to know tho that it need to be 1 amp. chears.
I had the same problem & found that one for a Motorola W375 mobile phone worked fine so, as said above, it is probably the charger
