Which is better? I used both and found both to be similar with GPRS and signal strength. I was curious why one would choose over the other.. and also the advantages and disadvantages. I am currently using the latest 4.00.16 T-Mo ROM. TIA.
Actually I am curious as to that question myself.
I currently run the 4.00.11 ROM with the AT&T A20 stack.
The bummer is that since I upgraded to 4.00.11, the signal meter is pretty much unrealiable now. Sometimes it shows 1 bar or none. The phone still works the same and I don't get dropped calls, but weird that it does that.
As far as the radio stack, out of all the people here that have used one or the other, or both, someone has to have an opinion on that.
There has to be some difference in quality since 2 companies have their own stack, Tmobile and AT&T. One must be better in some ways.
I can't say much to the signal bars since I didn't pay too much mind to them before. I *think* my GPRS is slower after I used T-MO 6.24 ROM. I also noticed my GPRS would hang and require a soft reboot in order the mail to retrieve again. I may go back to A.20 since the switch was pretty painless.

How's the new one holding up? Anything different from the other WM 2003 betas? What about the problems with SD cards getting erased for no apparent reason....has that been fixed? :-D
Well since its the T-Mobile test ROM, we got back the following:
Today screen plug-in that displays T-Mobile, Call Log and Voice Mail
SMS Message from the New menu is back
Battery Monitor is back on the task bar (the one at the bottom of the screen).
T-Mobile is being displayed as your carrier as it should on the phone display.
Battery life is much improved as with the other betas.
Your T-Mobile connection settings are back.
Its pretty stable to me haven't had any problems with Alarms, erased SD cards and the such.
HTH
I upgraded the ROM yesterday and kept the AT&T A.20.10 radio stack. It definitely seems more stable, although the signal strenght meter shows weak signal, but I have not had any problems connecting.

So it is the radio stack that controls the signal meter and not the ROM!
I also forgot to note that the SIM Tool Kit has been removed from the T-Mobile ROM.
Stability
I've had major stability issues ever since I installed the T Mobile rom on my Qtek P1010 (PW10A1, O2 Radio Stack 4.21.00).
The xda has crashed on me on many occassions, I've been stuck in the middle of a call without being able to hang up, have had issues taking a call, and even using the buttons.
Using the TMO rom on O2 XDA - stability seems fine - not yet erased an sd card, the GPRS works fine, but the phone buttons do not seem to answer or drop a call - I have to use the screen options.
Hmmm. I think I read the 4.00.05 beta had the phone button problem too. Or I could be wrong...
I've been using it for about 3 days now w/ no problems. About 100x better than my 3.17 ROM from TMO. It's about time I can rely on this thing. Call quality is much better and I no longer drop calls where I did w/ previous radio stack & ROM.
working fine for 24 hours.
I upgraded to 4.00.10ENG ROM and the 6.24 Radio stack yesterday. So far, it works great.
The signal meter is trending a little bit lower than when is was running the ATT radio stack, but the call quality is better.
Is it me, or has the ability to disconnect a GPRS connection gone away? I have to turn off the phone to break the connection.
I recently purchased a used XDA in good condition. The seller mentioned it has been flashed with WM2003.
It has a ROM version of 3.04.ee ENG
ROM Date : 06/12/2002
Radio Version M.E1
Protocol version : 324e4
I have not been able to find out if the Radio version is new or extremely old.
I reside in Canada and use FIDO GSM network and I can connect with their GPRS network and surf the net etc etc.
GPRS seems a bit slow where my Sony Ercisson phone can connect to GPRS from the exact same physical location and I can surf on it faster than on the XDA...kindda weird
Also, I notice that my GSM signal strength meter also hovers around 1 or 2 bars....where my Nokia or Ericsson show full signal...again weird
Can anyone shed some light on what I got (software ), and maybe should I upgrade to something better?
Thanks,
guru
If the radio works, regardless of the release number, I would suggest leaving it alone, also the bars for signal are in my opinion not very accurate. Radio stack upgrading is extremely risky, a phone with 2 bars is better than a paperweight/brick.

Thanks for your response.
I am happy with the unit overall, I would rather have it working than a paper weight.
Too bad this unit isn't designed to acept external hardware thru the SD port.

I recently obtained an AT&T Wireless SX56, I currently had a contract with AT&T wireless and decided to use this nice piece of hardware. Ater much research I found that it had an old ROM on it A.20.17 ENG which I have since upgraded to 2003SE 3.04.00 ENG. I get a pretty lousy signal most of the time, I am assuming this is due to the radio stack, it was lousy before and after the upgrade. Is there a known safe upgrade for this radio stack/rom combination? Thanks.
Since no one seemed the anxious to answer this, I did a lot of research and came to the conclusion that I needed a 6.XX radio stack for my upgrade. So after a recommendation I decided to go with radio stack 6.24. I ran the upgrade and it ran fine, completed successfully. I then soft reset, and deleted the update program from startup. I have now experienced 4 bars, which I had never seen with A.20
Update
No problems with GSM signal ?
Does the GPRS modem work good ?
All i know is that I never had more than 2 signal bars before, and now in some areas I can get 4 bars all the time. I know in some places I still have a crappy signal or no service, but I know that is because of the limited number of towers that support this device. I have never used the GPRS modem functionality.
radio stack 6.24
Where can I download this radio stack upgrade. I have 6.18. Thanks.
I haven't experienced any problems with 1.40, 1.41 or 1.43
But I was just wondering which do you all prefer?

The official Rogers radio version is 1.42.00.00 (i.e. this is what is on the TyTN's that they are now selling). I am using 1.40.30.00 and it is working well for me. Did not bother trying 1.43.00.00 since many North American users appeared to be having problems with it, leading me to believe that it has been tweaked for European users.

I'm using 1.41.00.10 with no problems, though I am using it voice only (no data -- Rogers can go screw themselves with their ridiculous prices /rant off).
Are the majority of problems people having with different radios more on the voice or data side of things, or is that somewhat irrelevant?
I'm using 1.41 on Rogers. I don't use 3G often, mostly just EDGE and voice. Battery only gets me through a day, but besides that, I don't have any voice quality\dropped call issues, data is stable and fast, all is good.

I have had 1.43.00.00 since it was released, no issue's nor have I had any issues with 1.41 or 1.40.
Rogers doesn't seam to have the issues that some of the UK and US systems are having. My guess is that there are fewer providers in Canada and less radio traffic to compete with and more concentrated towers for many areas.
messaging not working now
had sucesssfully upgraded to latest rom by black shodow, with radio 1.43, now messaging is not working, is it bec of radio.
Could somebody kindly point me to the right direction regarding any Roger's roms? I've done a search but came up with nothing
I'm using 1.47 on Rogers w/BBConnect WM5. All seems good. However, my area doesn't have 3G so I don't know how it performs in that aspect.
not worth a change, really
I had original 1.42 for a while. it worked great- got 3g in toronto (even had it in Barrie for a day during testing.)
wifi was good, and battery life was as good as expected.
I'm currently running 1.47, and I don't really notice that much of a difference. 3g seems faster, and WiFi definitely is, but I also flashed a new Rom and updated the wifi drivers too. MMS also works, but to be fair, I never tried it before.
In all, not a huge difference.
Be sure to use Lurch's cab file for setting the Rogers APN/MMS setup info- it's flawless.

I'm using 1.41.00.10 on Rogers network.
I use voice and data (BB Connect + VPN).
No problems.
1.43 on all 5 of our Hermes phones since it's release and had no problems in Toronto.
We use them heavily with Data and since we're in TO we get 3G signals in most places - and I'm very impressed with battery life.
I have experienced problems with 1.46 and 1.47 not being able to receive calls while the device is active, but only a handful of others on this forum have reported the same problems, so maybe I just got 5 bad in a row.
using 1.41 in Montreal (voice only, we know how much data cost in Canada), good reception, battery last long.
I am using 1.47 after usimg 1.43. anyone else think it eays the battery a lot quicker?.
Matt
I am in the GTA and have been using 1.43 since it was released with no issues with voice or data. I was going to switch to 1.47 until I read Aoshi_'s post....now I am debating it... .
SoftBank X01HT
I am using original Radio ROM (1.16.00.00) still did not flashed it...i just received the handset yesterday. So my question is: Why i can't get EDGE? I get only GPRS (since there is no 3G HSDPA here) I know we got EDGE coverage here and the specifications of the phone says EDGE class 10, Please would you tell me if i am not using the good radio version?
Answer: not sure, maybe it's from the ROM and it do not displays "E" even on EDGE network. Speed test proof: On Rogers GPRS/EDGE : 100 kilobits/sec (It's EDGE even indicates "G")
1.51.00.10

**so far been using 2 days
Battery seems to drain quick compared to 1.38. Very notible once using GPRS/Edge/HSPDA [gprs data seems quicker]
Signal strength is odd. Cell phone shows full strength Tytn shows 2 bars.
- Tytn shows no signal (cell phone shows full) yet when I make a call it is ok
Dropped calls: 2 (in a good area for reception)
1.51.00.10
o Battery life is short
o Missed calls
o gprs - no issues - seemed quick
Swapped to 1.43.00.00
o Battery life about the same as 1.38.00.00
o No missed calls yet - no signal drops
o GPRS seems frozen at times - required to turn off/flightmode and reactivate.
I'm on the 3 network in Australia and I find my reception is quite poor.
I understand 3's network coverage isn't as amazing as Telstra or Optus, but it is meant to be strong around the CBD, which mine isnt. Other friends on the network using non-htc handsets have perfect reception in places I don't. This leads me to believe it might be my radio. Even when roaming reception will drop out occasionally.
I have Radio-3.22.20.17. Are there any other Australian 3 users here? What radio are you using? How is your reception? Would a 6.35 radio be better? I've searched XDA, Google, etc and couldn't find decent radio information for the Magic, only found some for the Hero.
Thanks,
Anyone able to help?
i don't know much about the radio side of things, but is there anything else that could be affecting your reception?
do you have a cover on your phone?
does reception improve if it's removed?
have you contacted 3 to see if there might be a fault with your phone?
I have a cover, but reception isn't affected with it on or off. I've also had the phone checked and its fine.
I want to test a new radio/rom to see if it improves but I don't want to go back to Android 1.5 and there are no 100% working 2.1 roms, so I'll have to wait.
Are there any threads similar to this one? http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=563757
Hi there,
I'm from Australia as well. I used to use the new radio to be able to flash the cursorsense rom and it works great. Inside my office, most of the time I didnt get any reception at all but with the new radio, it did.
i switched back to the old radio to use another rom though. (at that time, rom for the new radio is not that much). at the moment, my mobile phone is roaming
you might want to try the new radio (I believe this takes more space than the old radio as my internal space just disappeared). however be careful with that, i think it's the error in flashing of radio n spl that can cause you to brick your phone.

I ended up trying CursorSense. I hate Sense UI so I removed it, but I didn't notice any signal difference. I also ran Before and After speedtests numerous times and averaged them and the new radio was slower for me
so sorry to hear that...
well, at least i finally found someone from australia using magic and a member of xda as well..
I've not used my Magic on 3, but I can relate to your signal issues on their network. The only contract phone I ever had was with them and I regretted it, call drops and poor signal no matter where I was, I used to work in the stock exchange building, you'd think a phone would have awesome signal there but I'd be stuck on 1-2 bars Sorry to say it, but I think you can blame 3, not your phone.
