A history of what has been done:
at first a perfectly working factory default XDA with a rom that dated back to fall 2002.
Connected to a Compar laptop running WinXp, ActiveSync 3.5 (build 12007)
Tried to flash Radio_Stack_Upgrade_v421.exe to the XDA, the flash went all-ok as far as 45% or 53% and froze after that. After being frozen for more than 5 minutes gave a message "flash failed" and booted the XDA, and started flashing all over again with the same result (this cycle repeated about 10 times)
After which I deleted the flash-related files from the XDA:sta startup directory, during while it was flashing.
Booted the XDA
Worked seemingly fine, except that none of the GSM functions vere operational. At first nothing else seemed to be wrong, but then the XDA completely failed to recognize the AC power connection. It insisted that it ran on battery even thou the power cord was connected. Even tried a different powerplug on the wall. Also the power utility from the settings meny gave "uknown" as batterylife.
Tried to flash the XDA with Radio_Unit_Upgrade_v31703.exe, but could not even start the procedure, as it insists on an early phase that the AC powercord must be connected, and since it doesn't recognize the connetion it simply aborts.
Desperate after this tried a hard reset.
After that the XDA doesn't boot properly: it gets past the inital "plash screen" into making a beep sound and displaying a white screen with blue thick bar (empty) on top. I'v booted the machine about 20 times like this by now, always with the same result. Some times it doesn't get as far as the blue-white empty window. If I leave it at that the XDA simply reboots itself after being frozen in the white-blue screen for over 2 minutes.
I left the machine at the table and went to the gym after coming back it had gotten past the white-blue screen, to the initial phase after hard reset where it says "tap screen to setup your XDA" I tapped the screen and it went to clicking through the crosses on the screen to initialize. I managed to click 1 cross, after which the XDA froze completely and did not react for 15 minutes.
After that single incident getting past the white-blue screen, I haven't been able to repeat it. I have tried to boot with SIM and SD, with SIM only, with SD only, and without both: the same results with each.
I have another XDA at my disposal, and a SD card. Could the device still be rocoverable somehow through using that other XDA to copy something into the SD card and booting.
Please tell me do I have a paper weight on my hands, or can I somehow recover from this. Thank you!
Yea that’s a good place to start use the other XDA to copy it ROM+Boot to the SD card and use that to reflash your ROM. You do that by entering bootloader mode and select CE+Boot. Hopefully you won't get the dreaded Check Sum after the reload!
Do you have access to a PC SD card reader, because you're go to need
one!

It appears my XDA O2 has the 5.17 version of the bootloader. When I boot into the bootloader it says "GSM error" at first, when I press the action button, it says "GSM turn on" and after a while "GSM turn on failed!!" and freezes there. Is this the kind of an error that prevents me from flashing a ROM from a SD card even if I had one? Since it gets stuck with that GSM error thing, and never even actually goes to the bootloader menu... why do I need a PC SD card reader? wouldn't just using the other XDA to copy the ROM and then flash it to the broken one do the trick?
Thanks, for the reply btw, for a while I was thinking that nobody would help me - and my situation is hopeless. Not atleast there is some light at the end of the tunnel..
Try pressing the Calendar button instead of the Action.
BTW You would need a PC SD card reader to load the needed radio stack upgrade files on to your device if all else failed plus if the CE+Boot backup to SD failed with that other XDA you could use XDArit to write another ROM to SD.

Thanks, that appears to work: the button on the left brings up the ROM+BOOT etc menu, and the button on the right (calendar) brings up the menu for setting the GSM (different options, like on, off, 900, 1800, etc). Since the local time is 00:36, I'll try the tricks with the other XDA O2 tomorrow..
You're right I'm sorry, its the Contacts button for CE+Boot!
WOW 00:36 its 14:47 here in LV, NV US anyhow good night and check you tomorrow.

hi i have a dead xda and i'm trying to fix it but it stops on 85% sometimes on 83%,i'm using the copy of cab file to sd card and runnig it from xda anyone can tel me how to get over this? i have removed it from charger and put the file on the sd card, the progress bar went to 99% then flash failed, now when i restart it windows work but very slowly and after reinstalling the rsu from pc by sync it gives me that message on 1%,how to fix it??!!
xda developers can u help me?
xda-developers can you tell me how to get over this 1% error?plz
Wer can only refer you to a really large number of postings on this forum. We tried playing with Radio upgrades, but we have not yet reached a point where any of this research is useful for those that have lost their radios in upgrades/downgrades.
Frankly: the Radio Stack Upgrade procedure frightens us: even if people play by the rules, and do the officially Right Thing(tm), things go wrong way too often for us to be telling people to play around. Our general word is to not upgrade unless you know you're fixing a problem, and to otherwise leave it the hell alone.
Sorry...
thanx
thanx anyway you are very kind and usefull people,
My Xda went white, the screen, aft a failed update, I've tried and re-tried the update provided by Peter Poelman. It did not work, stops at 1%... what I then did was
a) restart the failed update xda, remove the SD card
b) Press the Volume button to start it, when the screen message appear, press exit not to continue the flashing
c) connect the xda to the Sync cable, with your PC's Active Sync.
d) Install your Program A, again
e) Restart the xda recovery using the SD card method , follow the instructions that for SD card boot-up... and hope it work
All the best
It worked for my xda which is now fully functional.
thanx for your help, when i try to recover by upgrading from sd,i don,t use it as start up,i just go to explorer by pressing the calander buttom then the action centre the start menu appears then i browse,i'll try to reinstall windows and restart the prossedure hope it will fix it thanx.
ahh,it's not charging it happend with me in other times and programme A refuse to start,it says please connect your device to a/c adaptor, how to simulate it that the the unit charging or bypass the charging test?
Hi Guest,
Apologies in replying late, Im GUEST1 actually, jus regustered, anyway I forgot that you have to remove your SIM card before doing this, u may need to try a few times, I tried about 5-6 time before it worked. Good luck...
Hi 9DIV !
It is true ?
If I connect to activesync and run ruu upgrade I have the error message:
please connect ac adapter.
What is wrong ?

Sebi
Same Here
I've read all the posts on this subject over the last week and I've had no luck.
Once the XDA is rebooted after several minutes it is possible to get activesync to recognise the XDA, but you cannot use the official O2 install software again as it thinks the XDA is not connection to the PSU even if it is.
I have tried SD card solutions, including at least 3 versions of the RSUpgrade.sa some have got past 1% but none have managed the full 100%.
I would add that if once connected to active sync you delete the shortcuts in windows/startup you can reboot and the XDA will quickly go to the today page complete with the startup bar...
You are right to say that as regards to PSU, becuase the flashing software needs to check the power supply, and too ensure that of supply power is not at risk of loss of power during ROM flashing.
You cannot use the offical O2 to install, because that would be downgrading the ROM version and would likely damage your unit.
As i mentioned earlier, use the one from Peter Poelman, prepare the SD card. I have to use my friend's NEC's PDA to write to my SD card for re-builting the unit's ROM.
Maybe can try this (no guarantees)
1)As you reboot your broken unit, till it show the Today's screen
2)connect using your power adpator to charge it full. I have problem with this step, and tried several times(using reset button) before it started charging(i.e. your unit will show continous orange light) when fully charged (green light)
3) connect to active sync and install the Program A. Do the SD thingy.
hope this helps

My device: XDA O2, with wallaby boot loader 5.17
Tried to flash RSUv1.15(GPRS_421_ENG_O2) into it. Update froze at either 48% or 53%. Tried it 10 times over, while waiting infinitely but the device just auto-booted itself after each froze. Deleted the autorun files from the startup director on the XDA. After which it did not try the update at bootup anymore. Instead the device is now dead :
On boot it just gives a white screen and everything fails / nothing can be done. The device cannot be connected through USB, and nothing on either SD card of MM card will install.
I tried to flash wallaby-patch-tool.nb2 to fix the key problem with 5.17 bootloader but as GSM fails at the bootloader: it just ignores the disk. I tried the patch tool on a SD card and on two other MM cards it does not work on any of them: as the damn bootloader checks GSM first (and gives GSM ERROR)
Also since the device is trashed it does not apper to load its battery, I assume it must be quite dead soon. (is there any way to load a battery on a software-trashed XDA O2??)
I have another fully working XDA O2 at my disposal. That machine is running older version of CE, GSM and 5.15 Bootloader. I tried flashing the OS from that device to the SD card, succeeded in getting it there - but the broken device will not flash itself from the SD card since it has "wrong key", and the patch tool fails to work because the GSM fails before it even checks any cards in 5.17..
The GSM cannot be copied to the SD card from the working device, because copying the GSM requires connecting something called RS232 and running some program nobody has heard of..
Is there anything I can do? I even tried copying the 5.15 bootloader from the working device to SD, and flashing that to the 5.17 broken device: no success, since it fails the GSM at bootloader startup, and the card has "wrong key" anyways.
How can I recover from this?
When you do reply, please reply in full generously abundant and exquisite detail. I am unable to follow instructions such as "just do this and that" if you do give instructions please be very detailed: tell me where to load the files (paste the links) and preferably go step by step through the process.
I have noticed that some other people have this exact same problem. If you give good enough guidance maybe we can create a help file to address this same problem in the future as well.
Thank you in advance!
A further problem with the other XDA
A further problem emerged with the other XDA:
- now it only boots to bootloader, and refuses to power up properly
pressing the power button does nothing. Soft reseting does nothing. Hard reseting does nothing. The only thing that seems to work is pressing the powerbutton+softreseting at the same time == entering the bootloader mode. There the machine passes all tests and seems to be fully functional. however refuses to power up.
I tought maybe the SIM slot is improperly closed, tried closing it better, and manually pressing the switch inside - doesn't work either.
Also tired inserting, taking out, and reinserting the XDA to the cradle, with either the power button pressed at the same time or not (this seems to work sometimes when the XDA O2 in unresponsive) but that doesn't work either.
What to do? how can the device be powered up?
Still stuck with this same situation
Hi all,
I'm still stuck with this same situation. So far nobody has even tried offering any help to me. What can I do? Do you think I should just give up and toss the damn device to the nearest body of water I can see, or what?
look for "repair.zip" in the forum, for some people this helped.

Tried that. That doesn't work since that repair requires that the device works as far as the today screen - my device dies out well before that. As described above it dies right in the start: just frozes up and displays a white screen with a blue bar in top, and after that does nothing, runs nothing, reacts to nothing, etc..
Any other ideas?
Luckily I found ArticCat's solution in this forum... thanks ArticCat. Here's his procedure (copied on the thread he posted it, with my additions in parentheses, italicized):

Post subject: I faced the same problem here is the solution
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Look what you should do:
write the Wallaby-patched-tool.nb2 using the old xdarit (put it in the Diagnostics field on the program, and be sure to check the checkbox beside it and uncheck the other two checkboxes above it) and be sure to select Pre-5.17 before writing to your SD card
insert your card into your xda and boot into the wallaby boot loader and once you have the OK, press the "Action" key. at this point you should reach the patched menu of wallaby boot loader.
Remove your sd-card, re-write to it the PPC2003PE.nb1 file but this time make sure to select At least 5.17 bootloader, the re-insert it into your xda and select Restore
It should work fine
Hope this helps

--------------------------------------------------------
Hi all. My device is running on WBL 5.17.
I've written nk.nbf to my sd card (via a card reader) using OSImageTool. Popped it in my xda sd slot and did a power button + soft reset to enter the bootloader. All I get is the wallaby bootloader screen with a GSM Ok message on the lower left corner. No message of any updating/upgrading appears.
Moreover, whenever I use the flash tools in the wallaby (ce rom to sd, boot to sd, ce+boot to sd, gsm rom to sd) I get the following screen:
SD Backup
===========
CARD Key
I n v a l i d
PRESS ACTION
TO EXIT
Another thing, my xda doesn't boot properly. I always get the screen with garbled black and white lines and two white boxes on the upper part (I think this is the indicator or the progress bar of the interrupted rsu exe upgrade I did which cause my xda inoperable). Pressing the power switch doesn't do anything.
So I have no other way to turn off my device except pressing the hard reset hole. But when I do this, doing the power swith + soft reset combination won't work because I need to press the hard reset hole again to turn on my device and I'll be back again on the garbled screen with no way of turning off my device normally.
I read somewhere in this forum that you the xda must be off before entering the wallaby (doing the power switch + soft reset combination). I did the power + hard reset combination but it still gives me the wallaby screen and the flash tools error mentioned above.
What do you think should I do now to have my xda flashed using the sd card method successfully? I can't use the cradle because my xda won't boot even run the os, it just shows the garbled screen with the two boxes mentioned above.
I got the patch (nb2) file onto my sd card succesfully as you describe, but when i run the bootloader, I dont see the new 'patched' menu. Just a diagnostics menu. if i press the "contacts" but when the bootloader starts i see the standard 5.17 image copy menu which doesnt let me go from SD card to Rom
Hello,
How can get the file Wallaby-patched-tool.nb2 ?
The patch is here:
http://xda-developers.com/XDArit/wallaby-patch-tool.nb2
I and many others never got it to work. My wallaby never did what others describe this patch is supposed to make it do. I tried the 1k and 3.5k options too.
I ended up changing my bootloader to 5.15 using bootloaderfix.bat in the binaries folder of XDAtools. Worked fine, just make sure you have the wallaby connected via activesync before you run bootloaderfix.bat
Hello,
My XDA is dead. I can't soft/hard reset it and when I try to get into the bootloader screen it also does nothing .
I tried to upgrade the ROM using an SD card. First I loaded the wallaby-patch-tool.nb2 on the SD card using xdarit.exe. Then I used xdarit.exe again to load the NK.nb1 file on my SD card. I then put the SD card in my XDA and loaded the bootloader by pressing the power+softreset button. It said i had to press the start key and so I did. It then started doing the upgrade from SD which did not give any errors.
When it was finnished I did a cold boot (that's what my XDA screen said) but nothing happened. I can't even get it in to the bootloading screen (SR+power).
Anyone know a solution to my painfull problem?
Thanks a lot,
Wouter.
Exactly the same problem here.
Seemed to go ok but didnt restart
Hi,
After ROM flashing, usually you should do a cold reboot then wait for about 60 sec then perform a 2nd cold reboot.
Hi,
After ROM flashing, usually you should do a cold reboot then wait for about 60 sec then perform a 2nd cold reboot.
Its worth trying that, just poke the hole in bottom right of xda on time, wait a minute then poke once more, let us know if it works.
Still no go
Got myself a I-mate Pocket PC but would like to get the o2 goin again
I was trying to upgrade my ROM to windows 6.1, and something wrong happened.
the update software hangs up on 0% also in my phone, form more than hour.
then I unplug the USB cable, and connect it again, the wizard told me that process will be resumed, but the same for more than hour and nothing happened when i reconnect it again it gives me error connecting
now my device is no longer working, it just give me a colored screen and nothing happened.
is there is anyway to fix my phone.
Is there anybody ? any idea ??
This might help.

thank you jeremy,
I tried this method but it didn't work.
first i get the SD card and format it using windows (i tried both FAT, FAT32)
then extract the .nbh file from this package RUU_Elf_DOPOD_AU_1.14.710.2_4.1.13.46_02.97.90_BLUE_Ship.exe,
then i renamed it to ELF0IMG.nbh copied it to the root of SD card, then put the SD card in my device,
push and hold camera button and push the power button then the colored screen appeared but nothing happened. i tried also press and hold camera button then soft reset using stylus but it didn't work.
am i doing something wrong
Sorry i tired you
It should work.
It should say like ' do you want to flash your phone ' , press the power key to continue..
mmm, have you CID unlocked your phone?
have you tried flashing your phone?
how can i do that "CID unlock" ?
Go to the elf-upgrading forums and flash your ipl and spl to 3.10.
Cheers.
Can you start your phone in the first place?
no I cannot start my phone. it just freeze on the colored screen
