Failed ROM update - power failure - MDA, XDA, 1010 Software Upgrading

Apologies if this has already been dealt with elsewhere. Tried to update ROM - was in cradle with power and connectivity with XP pc. Update started and was working fine until I got an RPC service failure message informing me that PC would shut down in a minute!! After this I have the update screen saying it will take about 5 mins to complete and do not turn power off, etc. Cannot get rid of this - have I created a fancy paperweight or is there a way out of this?

If yor XDA can not power on, try the Bootlader method:
http://www.xda-developers.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=1717

And check your system for viruses. You have at least one: http://vil.nai.com/vil/content/v_100547.htm
Chris
P.S. The reason for the RPC stuff and the shutdown....

Yippee
Thanks all for advice. O2 xda up and running again! Now I can try xda-developers rom again without viruses!!
Got hit by w32.blast.worm!! What are the odds of that happening when upgrading ROM!
Thanks again.

Hi guys
Just to let you know that the blasted virus is quite prevalent. After reading this thread, I checked my computer and found the msblast.exe in the winnit 32 directory. Didn't even realised it was there till I read this forum !
Just to warn anyone out there to check out the site and clean your system.
Cheers
Vic

I have found the most comprehensive virus scanner that I have seen, it gives free online automatic or manual updates, allows you to have your email scanned before reaching you and also does its thing in real time in the background, all that and its FREE, go to www.avast.com and download the home edition, you will never regret the couple of minutes filling in your details, it even speaks to you. I dont have any connection with this company, I just think they are brilliant.

Hi
I am using AVG anti virus which is free as well; go to http://www.grisoft.com/us/us_dwnl_free.php if you want to try using this.
I will try that site you recommended as well.
I know this is not the proper forum for this but wonder if anyone has any idea how to disable all those irritating messages from Messenger Service that pops up on your screen now and then when you are on the internet? There are ads directing you to download some softwares to "cure" this problem but costs money. Also I don't seem to have this problem with Windows 98 and only when I use Windows 2000 that this irritating messaging service is present.
Hope if someone is able to give some advice.
Thanks
Vic

Ms Balster
Sorry this is slightly off topic but it may be helpful to somone.
There are two ways to beign infected by blaster.
1 Run the pacth that fixes the vunrability in RPC.
2 Use a firewall that blocks the RPC ports the windows xp one does this by default.
If you have blsat most of the big virus checker developers have free removal tools. I used the one at http://www.symantec.com. As far as I know it does little dmage to the vistim pc, although the 16th of every month it produces a distributed dinal of service attack on windowsupdate.com.
I also recived blast on monday lunch time. I removed it by the end of the day. Luckly my rom update had not fisnished downloading so I had got round to installing it. (Perghaps there is something to be said for a slow connection . )

End call doesn't end call...

I have the 8525 with WM6 installed. About 1 in 40 times, the End Call option doesn't display that the call ended (on my side). I attempt to still talk to the other person but I can't hear them, though. After about 2 minutes later, it finally ends the connection. I must do a soft reset to temporarily fix it; the only drawback is that the most previous call isn't shown as being made.
About 1 in 80 times, the call attempts to be made, but doesn't connect at all. I try to End Call, but it seems to "freeze" the screen. The "Close screen" seems to help, as in 30 seconds the device finally quits trying to connect.
Another thing I noticed, after the phone freezes, the antenna signal drops to zero and then returns to about 2 - 3 bars of signal, about 5 seconds later. I'm not sure if that is the cause of the phone hanging, or not. Is there any kind of software to resolve this issue? It's really annoying! Thanks for any help!
is that a cooked rom or official? what's your radio version and carrier?
I'm thinking u need a different radio verson...(u must have hardspl to flash another radio version)...
I got the 8525 as a reconditioned from AT&T about 3 weeks ago. It came with WM5, and I had the above calling issues back then too. I then was informed on the boards here to upgrade to WM6, which I downloaded from HTC, via the AT&T website link.
As for programs, I removed the AT&T "bloatware" via the hard reset trick. Later, I installed S2U2, HTC Streaming Media, HTweakC2.1b, and the PTTFix software. One other program on the 8525 is OCN8 -- for my iBlue 737 Bluetooth GPS device. There are no other files that I can recall, except maps, songs, internet .jpgs, and (camera) pictures/videos.
Settings:
ROM Version: 3.62.502.3
ROM Date: 10/11/07
Radio Version: 1.54.07.00
Protocol Version: 32.86u.7020.23H
I do appreciate and try to understand all of the replies that I receive, and I do try to respond within a timely manner. I understand that people are busy and may have other careers as well. However, the thing that makes me pull my hair out is when someone starts to assist my problem, then just ditches the thread after my reply, without so much as an "I'm sorry, but I'm not able to solve your problem" at the minimum! Normally, I give a 48 hour window for the helper or any more helpers to reply before I get frustrated, but it's been way past that timeframe now!
I've noticed that phenomenon on 3 of my prior posts, each are on different subjects. It seems that after the first reply, no one but the original helper responds! If that original helper is busy, or just forgets about the thread, then I'm screwed over.
Sorry to rant, but I tried looking all over the boards for the best Radio program. All I seem to find is best ROMs, but not really Radios. I've seen 2 other Radio programs in signatures, but I'm not sure what one would be best for my purposes. I've seen mention of 1.47.30 & 1.47.00.10 in some members' signatures, but I'm hesitant to just "trial and error" one, for fear it would damage my device. I currently have the WM6 default 1.54.07.00 version, but it freezes up on making some calls and more often on ending a current call.
Anyone else for ideas or opinions on what Radio program to use? Please back up your opinion with facts when possible. I am not an expert on the device, just a new user who is afraid to ruin my investment.
Much thanks to all who read this post and reply to it!
Hi, just saw your thread & did not know U were still hanging....
I would try radio 1.48.00.00 first, then 1.47.00.10 or 1.50.00.00 if necessary. Seem's a lot of at&t users liked 1.48 from what I noticed (don't forget hardspl - use mrvanx guide in the Mobile 6 forum section)...
Here's the 1.54 thread with pro's, con's, and 1.48 at&t comments...

Thanks for the reply! I will do the hardspl first, then try to install the 1.48.00.00 Radio. I'll report back with details in a day or two.
My current Image Version is 3.62.502.3, and I am attempting to update it to 3.54.255.3.
I keep having errors while trying to install Radio Version 1.48.00.10 to my 8525, after opening RUU_Inside.exe on my laptop. I've even tried to install it from my microSD card, but I get the tri-color screen instead of the white background with text screen, shown in the online example. The 8525 ActiveSyncs to the computer fine, and the screen shows:
"Updating the ROM image on your PDA phone ...
Please do not remove the USB connection from the PDA Phone or launch any program during the update process.
Remember the operation will take about 10 minutes."
As soon as the above grey box pops up, ActiveSync drops after that box appears, then I get the following message:
"Error [260]: CONNECTION"
I've installed Hard-SPL v.7 onto the 8525 already. Not that it seems to make a difference, I believe, but other programs that are on it include: WMXL 8525 Keyboard Fix, S2U2 1.16, Resco Explorer 2008, PTTFix, MunduRadio, & HTweakC 2.1,
not sure, but did a "search" for error 260 & seems to be your pc usb port:
(use xda google search for any questions)
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=368624
btw, u are using XP & not Vista on u'r pc.
My laptop has XP (Media Center Edition). I did a search as well, but it was dated back to 2007; I wondered if there was a newer fix than the one on that page, as it referenced the prior version of Hard-SPL. From the sounds of it, I have to install WM5 again, change the radio version (which was the only thing I need to adjust, as the voice calls have been a pain since day one), then reinstall all of my programs again.
I've heard people create ROMs. However, the radio settings can't be included in them . . . or am I off-base with that presumption? I am not that experienced to cook my own ROM, as I am still learning the nuances.
Well I broke down and went on AT&T's online chat. Sounds like there is no software to install to fix the issue. I hoped the radio version switch would help, but I couldn't get it to install! I guess it's back to the Replacement Depot on Sunday. I should return my device to WM5, which I hope to find the thread for on the board.
If interested, here's the key parts of the conversation:
Me: Hi, my 8525 is giving me trouble making and ending calls. It sometimes hangs, and doesn't quit trying to place the call. Once I reset it, it's fine until I try to end the call, it hangs up the call, but not showing so on my side
AT&T: Can you try hard shocking the phone for me please? A hard shock is taking the battery out while the phone is still powered on, and then power the phone back on once the battery is back in the phone.
Me: I received it as a reconditioned from the AT&T depot in Pittsburgh, PA. About 20 minutes later, it did the same thing, so I upgraded to WM6 and still the same issues
AT&T: If you continue to have these issues with this phone, you will need to take the phone back to the Device Support place where you got it from.
Me: Is that a common issue?
AT&T: Sometimes it is with at reconditioned phone.
. . .
AT&T does not have an update for the Windows Mobile 6 at this time. However you may check out HTC website at www.htcamerica.net/support/default.html and see if they have an update for this software for this phone.
Me: So it's the phone, not the software?
AT&T: Yes that is correct. There is a defect within the phone that is causing these issues. If you continue to have these issues with this phone, you will need to take the phone back to the Device Support place where you got it from.
Me: Are you able to explain what causes it that the Device Center doesn't catch it
AT&T: I am not sure what causes this issue.
Me: Like should there be anything done to prevent that from happening?
AT&T: It is hard to tell with reconditioned phones. It may be something that can be fixed and it may not. If the hard shock does not fix this issue and the Device Support cannot, then you will be given another phone.

Ok, your signature is looking good and that is some conversation with good old at&t...bla bla bla
To answer your question above, the chefs cooked roms do not include radio (because everyone around the world uses a different one). But, the Official WM6 rom's do (posted wiki & wm 6 section). So, why don't u flash the official wm6 since u have hardspl now? This in itself may resolve u'r issue (if u don't get the driver pc 260 error)! why would u want to flash wm5?
I was going to return my 8525 to the Service Depot where I got it, is why I mentioned returning it back to WM5 status. However, I wanted to see if it could be fixed by software first, but considering the above online AT&T chat, I am definitely going to get it replaced again. So, I want the 8525 to not show my "3rd party software" to ruin the warranty. I had the 8525 to individually remove the CABs under Remove Programs, and then I did a Clear Memory to default for good measure. Hopefully the Service Depot won't say anything about the device being altered that way.
Oh yea, I am going to get it replaced on Thursday. I will try to get them to give me a new one, not a reconditioned. That is, if there are even any new ones around anymore! It'd be a miracle if they gave me a new 8925 Tilt instead . . . lol I know -- keep dreaming! Wish me luck with a new 8525 though!
Well, I exchanged my current 8525 for another reconditioned one. The repair guy actually asked if I heard of the xda website (for help with my device!), lol!! He didn't go into detail about what this site does, just asked if I heard about it, and I affirmed that I did. Possibly he found traces of programs that changed settings, but he didn't rat me out. He sounded like he was confident that he fixed the phone dialing issues, but gave me a new one "just in case".
As soon as he gave it to me, it booted right up, without the calibration screen. He flat out told me to calibrate it, but it didn't appear. I was trying to see if it would act up with the dialing again, but noticed it didn't save the numbers on my SIM! I then decided to get rid of the bloatware via the Clear Programs and that lead to the calibration screen, finally.
So far it seems to work fine! I made about 6 calls this time and they seem to end properly. There is a slight 30 second or so delay when I press the button with the "red phone symbol" [end call] before the screen lights up again though. Is that normal?
Oh, I've only loaded up S2u2 so far. I will reinsert the others onto my memory card today sometime before work.
Again, so far so good! Only real issue I see is that the ringer volume is very low when the device is in the carrying case I have it in. I will search on here for a ringer volume changer, soon!
Glad U were able to get another phone!
"red phone symbol" [end call] before the screen lights up again though. Is that normal?
No, should end in a few seconds...doesn't seem it's even assigned to the phone (U can use Schaps Advanced Config tool to do this and many more good tweeks).

The "end call" does it's job, just that the screen is dim then it takes like 30 seconds to brighten again to show that the call is ended. Possibly it's something I have set up wrong. I notice the blue backlight for the keypad doesn't light up until a minute of my typing on it for a text; it's like a delayed reaction.
(I have the unlimited text/pix/vid plan, as of this past Thursday.) A bit off-topic, but are the Yahoo, AOL, & MSN IM programs considered a text or do they use kilobytes of data? I could use the programs over the Wi-Fi if I had to, but I don't want to pay extra for data kilobytes.
Lastly, I have never downloaded the Schaps Configuration. What all settings should I change? I know it's mostly based on personal preference, but what are some common alterations using it? For instance, I set the alarm to wake up to, but it's only a short beep sound. If I really was sleepy, I would probably sleep right through it! Does this program (or any others) configure any song on my device to be the alarm? I've already done that to the ringtone (where the first 30 seconds of any song is my ringtone).

sorry but im glad im not the only one too lol dont no how bad it is either but i dont want pesonal details, crad details etc took from my phone
can anyone help us?
I can confirm that none of you have a virus. Don't read a virus report for a PC and think it's the same on windows mobile. They're VERY different beasts.
There's very few viruses out there that affect WM, in relation to PCs.
If it makes you feel better, there is AV software out there. Uncle Googles can help you get that.
You've got a software problem. It's probably something that you installed that caused a problem, or something you uninstalled but it didn't uninstall correctly.
viruses on mobiles are incredibly rare, almost always only seen as proof of concept. if the phone is working fine its pretty safe to just turn off error reporting and forget about it. (I always do, and never give it a second thought)
if you really want to hunt down the culprit try removing programs you have added one at a time till it stops.
thanks guys...thats a big relief..i'm brand new to WM hence the apprehensions...i do have a 'F-secure' AV carried it on when i dumped my N96 .
I've had the services.exe error a few times. But only get it when sending texts. The text still sends, so don't really know what it's moaning about.
I'm only running apps that came with the phone and also HTC official hotfixes. No deep tinkering yet for me.
I think its related to using the animated weather wallpaper, which I've since turned off and not got the error since.
Got it also everytime when I start up my phone. Doesn't seem to affect the performance of it, services.exe runs on normally in the background. But it is kinda annoying...
EDIT: To "solve" it I just switched off the error reporting in Settings, System. I seemed to have been blind, I think...
thanks alot guys, really appreciate the replies,
im glad to here it isnt a virus as i had personal details stored on phone,
im not to bothered about the error reporting so ill probably just turn it off
once again many thanks
It could be an app that you installed, as I'm noticing it too sometimes. I more often notice it when after installing, it prompts me to reset my device.
I've had it go away for good after uninstalling the problem app.

Having to restart everyday. Slows down incredibly after 12-24h of use.

Hi Everyone,
I really hope this hasn't been asked before, I have, of course, tried searching but it's a complicated issue to search for. I posted a similar question in the Q&A thread before I did some more investigating but received no response.
I love my HD2 when it's on top form but it only seems to run like this for a maximum of 24h. After this the memory usage goes up from about 48% to 58% with nothing running and everything responds terrible slowly. The most noticeable/irritating issue is when trying to type a text message. Each key takes about a second to respond and it is so slow that if I type at normal speed it misses all the spaces I type and I end up with just one long garbled word. It is not just this that slows however, it's the entire phone. Navigating tabs in sence, flicking through texts, using and closing applications, scrolling up and down anything, the weather animation, Duttys task manager all become unusable. As soon as I soft reset it's fine again.
Incidentally the phone behaved exactly the same before I upgraded to the 1.66 Vodafone ROM (from 1.43). I always hoped the ROM upgrade would fix the problem but it did not.
Since posting the original question (where I was suspecting an app or manilla tweak to be the cause) I decided to hard reset and not install anything to see if the issue persisted. It did.
So, has anyone else had this problem. Should I be thinking about sending it back to HTC. I only hard reset this morning and since then have setup email, synced with myphone, setup wireless and setup facebook, twitter and youtube in sence and listened to some music already on my SD card. nothing else. and now it's ridiculously slow again.
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks everyone.
Murg
It does sound faulty I'm afraid. If a hard reset doesn't fix it then it's probably the device. You could try a custom ROM, but it probably wouldn't fix anything, and then you'd have to flash it back to its original state before sending it away for replacement.
My guess would be to send it back as faulty. Just make sure that it's running slow when you turn it off before sending it back, or they'll most likely turn it on, see no immediate problem and just put the latest ROM on and call it "fixed".
i have the same exept mine was fine on vf 1.43 rom. have hard reset and reflshed but no beter so i asume its the vf rom? keep thinking of flashing custom rom but never done it before
Thanks for the replies so far. i have posted this on the Vodafone eforum and sent it to HTC support so we'll see what they have to say.
Are there any Vodafone stock ROM users on here who defiantly don't have this problem?
I don't want to HSPL my device on account of my warranty. (yes i know you can uninstall it but what what if my buttons break, or my screen becomes unusable for example) cant afford to buy a replacement so I just ain't doing it yet. (as much as I'd like to)
If it is the ROM there is no point sending it back to Vodafone.. does anyone know if I can send a Vodafone device back to HTC themselves?
Many Thanks
Murg
Hi murgers
Im on Vodafone in UK. Have you a cleanRAM -HTC Addicts- app on your HD2? there are others available!
In brackets below taken from info sheet on download of file.
(Release memory for Windows Mobile devices.
 Amazing utility which helps you to clean up the wasted RAM memory without having to restart the device and eventually saves a lot of time.)
If you have not tried using a clean RAM app, try search on this forum and try on your phone. It really helps free up anything up to 30 - 40 MB ram at a time
Hope this helps
s
I have received a response from HTC as follows:
Thank you for contacting us.
In regards to the problems you are currently experiencing, it seems that you have a number of software issues here. Therefore, the only thing i can suggest is to book your phone in for repair so we can have a look into this further. You can do this by calling 08458900079 and speaking to one of our HTC representatives.
If a hard reset and a ROM upgrade did not improve the performance of your phone then this is the next best alternative.

Sounds like HTC are blaming the Vodafone ROM.
How does returning to HTC work? will i have to pay anything? Do they collect the phone? how long will it take? How can I prove the issue exists, do I send the phone 'on' and whist experiencing the fault?
As said before it's unlikely that sending it back to Vodafone will yield any results.
if you phone htc then they will send someone to yours to pick up the phone in a few days. the whole process takes about a couple weeks and then they ship it back to you
when i sent my phone off for repair i went into a tmobile (my operator) shop and they sent it off for me, and then got a text back when the phone was back, i went back to the shop to pick it up
the whole process took 13 days
this did not solve my problem so i went back to a tmobile shop and am getting a full exhange (swapping for a new phone) on wednesday
hope this helps
its all very simple
Theres a very simple fix... clear your text messages.
This was my issue too which was addressed in another post. When my phone synced with MyPhone, it downloaded thousands of messages and caused major problems. the reason I didn't have issues on my tilt has something to do with sense integration. another option is to disable the sense text messenger app and use the default winmo app.
This is why it works fine for the first 24 hours. When MyPhone syncs overnight and retrieves your texts you get the slowdown.
Hope this helps.
I get this also. Have a t-mobile phone but since flashed it to xannytech, but I still get this.
I had suspected it might be something to do with MyPhone. There a good backup solution I can use that's not this ? Might re-flash and never use it again.
Does the OP use myphone too ?? Might be the common theme...
It's not MyPhone that causes the problem. That simply restores things that you've deleted. If you archive your text message using the MyPhone web interface then they'll be deleted off your phone next time you sync, but they'll still be available online.
That doesn't make any sense. I haven't deleted any text messages. The phone works perfectly quickly, but after a day or so it suddenly starts going really slow. i.e. it takes 30s after pressing 'talk' for the phone to start ringing, typing in messages is slow, the weather goes all stuttery. No programs appear to be running. Restarting the phone fixes it again, but this is pretty annoying.
I had thought it might be myphone or some other service doing something funny in the background. Any way to debug this?
as someone has allready said, i have Cleanram app scheduled to run twice a day and very rarely have an issue. Its all in the background so you dont even notice it running
Ah okay - I thought you were referring to the ongoing discussion and previous talk of how myphone was affecting the OP.
Why don't you just set myphone to sync manually. That way it never does anything in the background. I seriously doubt it's myphone that is causing the problems you have described.
I'd suggest uninstalling apps 1-by-1 to see if the problem suddenly disappears, as it's something that you have installed that's causing the problem. Obviously, if you find the problem still occurs after removing something, you can then reinstall it and move onto the next app.
Will give cleanram a go, though I don't think memory is the problem (always seems to be plenty free when it slows down) - but worth a try!
Not sure it is something installed either, as I don't really have much installed other than myphone, marketplace, google maps and like one game. .... other than of course what came with Xannytech's ROM, but had same issue before and after I put this on anyhow
cheers
Just happened again and tried cleanram, but did not help. It's like something is really hogging the CPU and everything responds slowly, but nothing is running in task manager.
Does anyone know if there is there anyway to show what services are running? Or any other way to debug?
thanks
@rathga
how many text messages are stored on your device?
I have a suspicion that perhaps you didn't grasp what I was saying regarding Myphone.
Hi Rathga - My HD2 does exactly the same thing, with absolutely exactly the same symptoms I've never used myphone though.
I'm on stock O2 (1.43?) and have only really installed TomTom, Hotfixes and Ranster Device Reset (to cope with this issue!)
Often after I keep using it I get prompted to send a debug message to MS with an error in filesys.exe - I'll update this with full details when it happens next
I'm installing this cleanram to see if it helps somehow

Try looking at this thread in the HD2 General forum (sorry can't post links)
'CPU usage is 100% when running Opera'
This was causing me some problems. Clearing the Opera cache certainly seemed to work.
Andy.
Hi,
Don't know if anyone is interested any more or still having this problem but I realised I didn't post a resolution to the problem when I figured out that was causing it.
The Problem was caused by...... Dah Dah Dah.....TEXT MESSAGES.
I had about 1000 text messages shared between the inbox and outbox and apparently this was way too much for the phone to cope with. This really annoyed me as I never had to delete them on my TyNn II (or any other phone I've ever owned for that matter), Iphone and Android users never have to delete them what what is with that!!!.
Sure enough after using MyPhone to 'Archive' the texts the phone sprang back to it speedy old self. Put them back on and Bam... slows to a stop over the course of an hour or so. I don't understand why this happens but I am 100% confident that this was the source of all the problems.
I Still have to archive my texts as I notice it starting to slow down when I reach about 500ish. Very Annoying.

Try as follows:
Get a junk cleaner and clean all temps
Get SKTools do a Autoclean and switch on all shadow-background services.
This might help to get Your HD2 running smooth as mine for weeks .............

[Q] A driver installed itself on my laptop through an .exe file

Hey guys, really need help here. Honest noob here so please try to understand my situation. I updated to Windows 8.1 to see what were the changes but unfortunately I realised I didn't have my activation key, so I decided to use a program called Windows 8.1 Key Finder Ultimate just to see all the features before buying the key ( I don't have money, I'm just a poor student)
So I installed it, and clicked on it. Then it prompted me to install again, which I found peculiar. So I scanned the exe and nothing was wrong. I installed the thing and tried to run it, but it did the same thing so I tried KMS activators instead. From KMSAuto Pro to KMSPico, nothing worked. Something I did along the way triggered a sound driver to install, and it definitely wasn't a Realtek driver, which is my soundcard manufacturer. I didn't really pay much attention as it was 2-3am, and I assumed it would just stop installing due to conflicts with the real driver.
Decided to sleep, went to school at 7, came back home and decided to turn on my laptop to listen to my new CD. No sound. I assumed its just WMP having issues with the CD, so I tried my other players. Nothing! Decided I should try to see the speaker settings and check vol. etc but I can't play any test tone, with the computer telling me "Failed to play test tone". I panicked for awhile but went on a solution hunt. I tried everything from a clean boot to driver update to uninstall then install, disabling audio and re-enabling, so many and nothing works. Five hours later I'm here desparate to find answers from the gurus. (I realised I have no restore points, which is really idiotic of me...)
I remembered the sound driver that installed itself, so I intended to find it and murder it. But being the noob I am, I don't know how to find the right thing in event logs and all the mumbo jumbo. Is there a way to see what changed recently, or installed recently (not only programs) or even what was running a certain periods of time (don't say task manager because I'm not looking for what's running but rather what RAN). Also, are there any ways to see all drivers installed apart from device manager and isolate them to diagnose the issue at hand?
Any solutions provided to me is greatly appreciated, and should be free is possible. I don't have any money on me and I can't find a job to support myself due to school, so please understand that this laptop is really valuable to me and I need all the help I can find here. If any other detail is needed I'd gladly provide them. And please don't condone me for my mistake and stuff, I'm still learning as I go along...

You can use the reliability monitor under control panel >system and security>action center >maintenance to see a nice time line of events.
If you have a key for windows 8, you can easily and freely update to windows 8.1 using the store (you have to install all windows 8 updates first).
It is best to avoid using fishy .exes because they can damage your windows install and even install mallware.

Factory naughtyware??

Sorry for the (kind of) repost but a lot more people have a 6 than a 5, and it's relevant to both, so might get more bites here.
(Original thread: https://forum.xda-developers.com/nokia-5/help/nokia-5-maybe-6-factory-naughtyware-t3731032)
Checking my pi-hole logs the other day (awesome bit of software that is, btw), I noticed my phone connecting to some weird domains, and doing it a lot. Like, all the time. What the hell are:
caivs-cloud-ww.c2dms.com
kajdfpdvk9.execute-api.us-west-2.amazonaws.com
epdg.epc.mnc020.mcc234.pub.3gppnetwork.org
aps.c2dms.com
Mine's a 5 but I've confirmed at least one 6 does the same. Anyone else seen this? Ideas what it is? Anyone think I'm wrong to block it and block it hard?

Look all you need is flash the phone with MENA firmware, Nokia 5 flash file is also available there and do a factory reset from recovery..
Be careful do not visit any malware effected website or download any virus effected or cracked app into your phone
This lead to trasfer malware into your phone and your phone does the wierd thing that you are facing right now
Done enjoy...

Thanks for the reply but sorry, I'm not convinced.
3 independent people with nokia phones have seen this behaviour. 2 of them I know don't visit sketchy sites or install sketchy apps. While maybe they could all have been caught out by the same malware, there's no reference to it that I can find on the whole wide internet. You'd think someone with an android phone would have spotted this.
Have you checked your logs? Is yours doing the same?
Anyone else able to see easily what's going on on their network and confirm/deny?

IMO, you ought to provide some evident how naughty it is rather than promote some software (pi-hole) and ask wherever you want for other people to confirm.
On the other hand, I've installed Net Monitor and I had saw quite a few connected servers to my brand new device, add up with locked bootloader, I have no doubt that HMD/Google might have been collected informations on my physical device, they're still own the device's software as long as they keep the bootloader locked.
Although, if you're pro-privacy/oriented person, using a phone with a sim card on, not to mention using Android from Google, then you're doing it wrong.
c2dms.com belongs to Foxconn.
3gppnetwork.org belongs to GSM Association. Mobile network code 0xx is reserved for testing purposes, so mnc020.mcc234.pub.3gppnetwork.org may collect some cellular telemetry.
Not sure re foxconn though. I dont see my ta-1025 ever connecting to these sites. Wonder if it's firmware specific.
I visited c2dms.com and it looks like some outsource-y cloud telemetry service.
Meanwhile, searching for "caivs" brings back some, er, unsavoury results about Chinese phones automatically sending SMSes and costing users money. But according to this thread it's just a kind of identification service for manufacturers to control sales. That forum along with this link is quite old so maybe it's just a coincidence, but my Nokia 6 does have an app called Caivs.

I agree. Wasn't trying to promote anything, just explaining how it came to my attention.
The colleague mentioned did some more digging and it looks like encrypted XMPP traffic.
Force-stopping the caivs and com.qti.service.colorservice apps has no effect, but meh, worth a try.
From the other thread "since the update there is an app caivs. it sends the geo-data in regular intervals. caivs - cloud - ww. c2dms. is spyware. you can't delete or disable it. Cheek! "
I raised it with Nokia support and they told me I shouldn't install malware.
