!!!!Attn All Newbie Would-Be ROM/Radio Updaters!!!! - MDA, XDA, 1010 Software Upgrading

Unfortantely very few people who would like to upgrade their ROMs bother to read much of this fantastic forum.
To save you some time:
1. If you a even thinking about updating your ROM or radio stack stop NOW and go buy an SD Card reader and an extra 64mb SD CARD. Otherwise don't even bother trying. Too many people crap out their devices utilizing the .exe update method which is known to cause problems with failed updates, erasing the radio stack(or changing it by using the wrong .exe), and NOT being able to go back to a prior ROM version unless you use the SD Card anyway so go BUY ONE.
2. If you can't/won't afford a card reader or extra SD Card, you probably shouldn't have an HTC Device anyway.
3. This isn't meant to flame anyone but there are some people who follow directions, don't have problems, and wish to learn more about this great project and can't read much of anything in here except for people crying about how they updated an AT&T Device with a Tmobile ROM and Radio Stack by accident, which no longer works, didn't bother to copy down ANY of their device settings, and then proceed to update their radio stack with and O2 version which fails 10% into the upgrade and now they have a shiny new paperweight.
Just please, all of you would-be-updaters, follow the directions of the site moderators to the letter by reading every post possible till your eyes dry up, don't improvise at all, and you WILL have a great, up-to-date, HTC device.

I'm absolutely brand new to this forum and before flashing my german T-Mobile MDA I read 2 days and tried to understand what people were talking about. Now I have a lot knowledge, enough to upgrade my device. And I did it without any prob's because I first read! Most of the questions I read developed from ignorance. (Sorry for that!)

XDA's from Hell. Help needed.

Let me start out with a disclaimer; if you don't care, skip to the next paragraph: I like to consider myself fairly technically minded. I would like to think I am above average intelligence, especially when it comes to electronics. I am near my wits end with these two devices; they are very near ending up as expensive fish bowl ornaments! I searched, and as much as I have tried I cannot find the answers to my questions. The problem I believe is the slight language barrier this site displays; not that I view this as a bad thing, it is just a tad harder to get a point across if English is your second language. At least, if you're speaking to a native English speaker. End monologue.
1. How do I load the Special Edition ROM from an SD card? Yes, I've read the links. I have .exe file which appears as a ZIP file in windows. Unable to locate instructions on what to do with this particular file. I fully intend to write a walkthrough for dummies once I've finished this ordeal. Or perhaps there is already one out there?
2. The unlock program proved to be useless on BOTH PHONES. How's that for luck? Thus my above question.
Phone 1:
ROM Version A.20.17 ENG
Radio Version: A.20.10
Phone 2:
ROM Version: 3.14.03 ENG
Radio Version: 6.12
Thank you for your patience and time.
In an unrelated problem, it seems when I load the OSTools on my XP computer it is unable to run due to a missing DLL? How quaint. I will post exactly what it is missing later.
missing dll
Got the same problem before with the missing dll. just install ACTIVE SYNC. it would solve the problem.
I found my problem.
See, I had no interest in actually using these phones; they were gifts for others. I prefer to stick to my tried and true Treo 650 (which I have affectionatly named 'Princess,' for the main reason it's a whiny *****.) It never occured to me that I would have to install Active Sync, especially when I was trying to unlock from an SD card. No where that I could find was it mentioned that you first needed to install active sync to run the ROM updater. One should never assume that the person reading an article of instruction would know this. Instead, most places I looked, it simply said 'install' the ROM. I will have my Unlock for Dummies up shortly. Thanks all for the great info provided here on this site.

Hero rom problems

http://reviewstash.com/viewtopic.php?pid=3239#p3239
i'm trying to do this to my g1 but it's a little vauge for someone who has never attempted this. i.e: me ... couple of quick questions 1st:
-do i need to get a new sdcard to replace the stock 1?
-does the phone need to be in rc29 first?
step#5 at the bottom listed to wipe and flash the phone, so i looked up how to flash the g1 on this forum and it seemed to require going back to rc29, which i did.
only problem is, step#2 listed to extract step#1 in to the "ext2" partition, which no longer exists after i put my phone back to rc29.
i just installed jesusfreke's rc33 thinking maybe "ext2" was only on rc33 or something, and "ext2" still is not there. ANY help would be greatly appreciated. i used "SDSPLIT" to create a dual partitioned sdcard, & sdsplit says everything is partitioned and ready, only now when i mount it to my computer nothing shows up.
oh and i'm new, sorry if this has been posted...went through a ton of pages on this forum and didn't see any posts about it, might have overlooked it while scrolling through wall after wall after wall of posts
EDIT: i used to own an htc fuze and wizard, but this phone is a whole new ballgame for me!
Same here... do we need a replacement mircro sd card than the one given to us in the box?
Oh my goodness gracious, 1. Y would u follow a guide not in the forums [email protected] ur posting on? Have u even tried searching first? Why would you need to replace ur sd? It would be better to(not sure what class it is, but im sure its a 2), the phone needs to have root to install Hero, and the partitions on the SD card r not rom related
you can use any micro sd card.
use the search....
First you didn't read the very firs post on this forum. It should be deleted. Second flashing the hero rom in not for the average Joe. Third a little search goes a long way....i.e. there is a post on how to do it.
Delete this thread!
if you don't know what ext2 is you should forget about it since you didn't even bother reading the guides that are posted here...
Hmm sounds like a problem, what I recommend is that you go and call up TMobile and go ahead and pay another 400 dollars for another G1 and see what firmware it is, repeat as needed until you get one that has RC29 on it.
Alright, seriously, use the search button, and follow guides on THIS site if you plan on asking questions. You do not need a new SD card, however the stock card that comes with the G1 is a class 2 card, which is not sufficient for Apps2SD. Just type into the command prompt
adb push (location of app_s.zip) /system/sd/
adb shell
cd /system/sd/
unzip App_s.zip
You should be good now.
Also, do not mount the SD card. Just plug it in and do the ADB commands.

Woooooooooooooooooooooooow. I thought i was a noob. An i figured out how to install Haykuro's HERO ROM. Delete or be deleted
Please Search first.
Please post in the right thread/forum.
Thank you.
LOL should've known even an all-nerd forum would have jackasses on it. Good thing you guys are so helpful, i might never have gotten my hero rom to work on my g1!
ps, works like a charm, thanks for the warm wishes broskis. go out and get a couple drinks once in a while and socialize. weirdos
I don't get when this forum became so hostile.
If more than 3 individual people took time out of their lives and told him that he's a noob, that is ridiculous. This forum used to help people out so much.
The g1 community is just some flamers.

O2 rom update.

I'm running an early ROM , despite the phone being just a couple of weeks old, I tried to upgrade to the latest rom from the HTC website, but their system wouldnt allow me to (because I'm with O2).
Is there any way to upgrade (was simple with the iphone) the ROM without going down the custom rom route ?
yeh flash hspl and you can run any official rom as well.
They are all stored here.

Hi,
There's a section on ROM updates here on XDA which may have the information you need, at http://forum.xda-developers.com/forumdisplay.php?f=534. If heard reference to using something called Gold Card (and it's also been written as Goldcard here) which I believe is meant to help. This might give you something to look at whilst othr, more lmowledgable people provide you with info. I have no personal experience as my HD2 is unlocked.
Regards.
Briefly put, the gold card method basically consists of putting a specially edited SD card into your phone which allows you to run the update from HTC. Without it the update app says it's not compatible or something.
(To edit the SD card you format it to FAT32, then use a special application to get the serial number of it, send that to and a website and get some data back which you write to the filesystem of the SD card).
You can also update by putting the firmware image onto this special SD card and calling it something like goldcard.img, which I suppose is where the name comes from. (You get the firmware image by treating the HTC update app as a .zip file and uncompressing it).
I've done this from my O2/1.43 phone (using the update app) and haven't noticed a great deal of improvement, so I wouldn't get too excited about needing it to solve all your problems. If I were you, I'd stick to the individual updates released from HTC until a "must have" version comes out. From reading forums there doesn't seem to be many posts saying that 1.48 is much better than 1.43, that fits my experience too.

[Q] Need Advice/Knowledge on my new T-Mobile HD2

Hello everyone, first off let me start by congratulating the great team XDA-Developers for this awesome web page and the help they give to total NOOBS like me. Also I wanted to point out that if these questions or this thread are in the wrong place, please move it cause it's the firs time I ask for help.
Ok, so a little background, I'm not a complete noob on computers or cell phones, just on the HD2, I've had in the past a Nokia 6600, an HP 6515 running wm2003se, an iphone 3g and a 3gs, all of these were tweaked and hacked or jailbroken etc...
So now on the the questions, I just got myself a used T-Mobile HD2 cause I wanted to leave behind my iphone and have something with more power and customization options. Now I have this incredible phone in my hands and I have so many questions and plans for it, but I need Knowledge before I attempt to do anything and I can't seem to find the answers for my questions in any thread, so here goes !
1. should I update to the latest T-Mobile ROM from their web page ? Or should I at least download it to have it as a backup to flash back to stock ?
2. I think this device has already HSPL cause it had android on it before, how do I check the HSPL and should I use that or go for SSPL ?
3. As far as wm6.5 goes, I've been planning of flashing an Energy ROM, is that a good choice ?
4. Now, after having a cooked ROM on the device, I want to try android, but I want to be able to boot it from my SD card, I've been reading about Exceller's Android Loader, and according to what I've read i could have wm6.5 on my device and be able to dual boot different versions of android, an I gonna have issues with that ? are the android versions on the SD card gonna work properly ?
5. OK, so lets say I can have wm6.5 and 2 other versions of android on the SD card, how would the loaded apps get organized on the SD card ? can I choose when installing apps where they should be installed so I can keep the SD card organized ?
6. Whats the difference between NAND and RAM droid ? If I load Android through the SD card will it have less functionality than if I flash the device ?
7. Is using android from an SD card like emulating ? does it make the device slower, take up more ram, drain battery more ?
8. Does flashing a device with Android delete all traces of wm6.5 ? I ask this cause I want to try and know what is the fastest and more powerful OS i should have and keep on my device.
9. Does changing to android take away functionality from the HD2 remote (skip songs/pause/play/answer calls) ?
Well that's it for now, I have so many more questions but probably by now whoever is reading this has fallen asleep ! LOL
Thank you to anybody who has the patience to help me out.

[Q] Dual boot - WM 6.x or Android

I apologize because I know the answer is posted out there somewhere but my 62 year old brain is exploding trying to figure out what to search on.
I've got a US T-Mobile HD2 WM6.5 with the stock opsys on it. I would LOVE to change to a "cooked" ROM (not WM7 if possible because I'm still running XT on my computer, unless someone tells me that is possible) and some version of Android so I can test Android GPS apps.
I tried looking up the threads and posts but couldn't even figure out whether to search for "dual boot", "boot manager", or any one of a half dozen other alternatives.
I'll search the posts if someone tells me how. Which term? Parenthesis?
or the URL to a step by step procedure
or the URL to a post with clear instructions.
I'd love to hear from someone that is actually running a configuration they are happy with.
Sheez, to think I spent over 30 years in Silicon Valley. I feel old.
GPSGary
The only way to dual boot with Windows 6.5 is using HaRET (sd build). There are some programs which will boot up Android straight away. There are no non-stock bootloaders that support Windows 6.5.
here's what ya need to do mate ...
1 head on over to the the Android section for Leo, the go to the sd development subsection.
2 read the first 3-5 posts (stickies) they usually (always) have easy access to guides, roms, various other things.
READ READ READ!!!
Good Luck!
1. Start with checking your SPL in bootloader - vol-down + power while the device is off.
2. Download HSPL4 from here, not forgetting if your SPL matches those mentioned in that post (it should, but if it doesn't, post it here and we will think about it). Get it and run it (from bootloader or WM), upgrade SPL to HSPL 2.08. It is needed to use the cooked ROMs.
3. Find a ROM that matches your needs here. I can't help you with your choice because I used stock ROM until the day I got an 8gb sd card and installed WP7. That section is rarely updated though, so if you know you will be very careful and install only ROMs which support your version, you can have a look here. Be very careful and install only the ROMs which clearly say "TMOUS compatible".
4. Since it's a TMOUS, you shouldn't need to update the radio (basically software controlling your phone), but if you want to be 100% sure, you can install the recommended radio, 2.15.50. Download it from here and install it by running RUU.exe.
5. Get the Android. Choose a ROM in this section. Since you say it's only for GPS, I'd recommend you getting a fast, efficient CyanogenMod-based ROM like AmeriCan Android.
What have you been doing in Silicon Valley, if you can't find needed information? OK, this might be confusing on the first look, but reading a bit would help you a lot.
