Disable GPRS Startup - Networking

Whenever i Soft reset my XDA, or disable then enable Phone on my XDA, a G in a white Box for about 3-4 seconds then dissapears, im afraid that my phone is connecting to GPRS for a few seconds, then disconnecting... if this is the case, i need a way to disable it as this would be an expensive excersise (@25c AUD a logon). Otherwise, could someone explain it.
i have a o2 XDA with:
ROM: 3.14.17
ROM Date: 10/11/02
Radio: 4.17
Protocol: 32S54
This is what is availiable on www.myxda.com.
I hope to hear from someone soon, as this is real worrying.

The 'G' is supposed to only show up briefly, you're logged in with GPRS capability if the bubble that shows if you hit the antenna symbol just once shows a black square with a white 'G' in the top right corner.
This doesn't however mean you're connected: for this you need to have the connection set up for your provider and then open a connection using 'Start', 'Settings', 'Connections tab', 'Connections' and then hit connect. Internet Explorer and some other prorams open their own connections.

But when that G shows up, is it connecting to GPRS and then disconnecting, or is it just telling me that GPRS is availiable. Is there any way at startup that i can make GPRS come online and stay online as i have now switched to a plan that has no GPRS session fees & you only pay for data.

It cuts the gprs connection after 2 or 3 minutes

When I use my XDA to go to the internet it works for a 2 or 3 minutes and it cuts the comunication.
Is there something to mantein the connection?
i have:
ROM Version: 3.14.40 ENG (Tmobile)
ROM Date 11/26/02
Radio Version: 6.18
Protocol Version: 324e4
Can you Help me?
It cuts the communication and doesnt go to stanby or the connection is d/c when the device goes to stanby?
You know i mean the screen turns off your GPRS d/c?
:?:
No, it doesn't go to stand by mode...
When I'm browsing internet, is cuts the acees via GPRS...
After several minutes of successful browsing, things stop working. All of the sudden, if I attempt to access a page, I get a, "The page you are trying to open cannot be found" error. After this occurs, I must disconnect and re-connect to GPRS to be able to browse again.
I can cause this to happen at will: just browse for a few minutes, then I get the error.
Ummm it happened to me once but it wasnt the XDA's problem it was the operator - When i called the customer support of my operator they said that there is load up on the GPRS in my area but after that call in several days the problem didnt occure anymore and i can browse normaly now.
I think you should call your Mobile Operator talk to the customer support they can help you.
As for your XDA i think there are some Newer Rom Version that you cn upgrade too, check the ROM section
Didn't you connect through Inbox or another application? Inbox disconnects data call about 5 minutes after it has finished downloading e-mails. Some programs (IE, Ezos WAP etc.) do the same..

I cured the problem.
Under the modem settings for the connnection, tap and hold the modem setting. A context menu will pop up. Make sure "Always Dial" is NOT selected.
Good luck, and let me know if this works.
PS I received this advice from T-Mobile Cust. Care. They have been doing a great job solving my issues!
It works
I've tried it for the last hour, previously I was sure the GPRS connection died after a few minutes, now it keeps working, so I am very happy.

gprs cut out?
Hi,
When I am not using the internet for about 10mins the
connection is automatically cut off? I have my GPRS always
on when on power saving mode.
Any ideas how to keep the connection so that you wont be
cut off? :?
Hoi,
For me the GPRS issue is fully resolved. It's stabile and faster then ever.
I put in a new simcard: (this resolved the issue of not beiing able to turn off/on the phone when not fully charged)
I installed the latest ROM upgrades 3.14.13 en 4.16 UK
On a site with autorefresh every 5 minutes, i had it succesfully on for 2 or 3 hours.
when not refreshing
I mean when I didnt use the internet or refresh when
on gprs, the xda will automatically disconect the gprs
on or about 10 mins after you last used it. Maybe
might have to sort of change the xda setting on gprs.
My GPRS is always enabled on safe mode. But still
it cut off after 10mins??? can anyone help here?

Cant disconnect GPRS

I have an XDA 1
Running 4.01.12 ENG - Radio 4.21.00
Connected to the Orange Network
When I connect to GPRS to access the internet or email.
It connects up fine. If I then tap on the signal Icon
(with opposing arrows indicating its connected),
It opens a ballon window with "Orange GPRS Connected". The only options are HIDE and a settings link. The is no disconnect option.
The only way I can stop the connection is to tap Setting -> Manage Existing ->Edit and then CANCEL
Anyone know how to fix this.?
Help appreicated.
Rich
Well, here is a little cool trick to disconnect the GPRS!!
Just press the "end call button" (the red button) for 3 seconds, then it will disconnect.
Try it, it works with me in xda II, I am not sure if it works in xda I. Let us know if this little trick works in xda I.
 It works. Thanks

Forcing GPRS to disconnect - O2 XDA mini s

Anyone know how I can force my mini s to disconnect from GPRS after it has checked my email?
Si.
press and hold the red phone button (hang up) for about 5 seconds - you should see it switch from GPRS (small [G] icon) to 'GPRS Available' (large [G] icon)
I'd rather it did it automatically - so I can leave it alone all day and it will connect to check now and again then disconnect.
same problem here. is there a fix?
also when i have forgot to disconnect am i paying for gprs? or is it just any content i download?
cheers.
GPRS is paid for by data usage, not connection... so you can leave it connected (so long as nothing is downloading in the background!)
V
cheers vijay, but have you got a workaround for original question?
on my old c500 when i had finished getting mail it automatically switched itself off.are we missing something?
vijay... unfortunately, at least on my Qtek 9100, there's always some data sent.. very infrequently, but over a day of no activity, the GPRS Monitor application that came with it reported 200KB traffic. So I always make sure to disconnect regardless
ZeBoxx: it doesn't surprise me. At least in theory, you only pay for data transfer on GPRS, not time connected like on dialup. However, I think activesync is an unpredictable beast at bet. I never use GPRS - so for me, to ensure I'm completely disconnected I use a dummy grps account.
futuresbright: I'm working on a set of such tools, but I believe there's already a command line tool to disconnect GPRS. I haven't made one yet that will automatically disconnect after checking email. I have to work on a related app, so I will try to look into the question, but I can't promise any time frame I'm afraid
V
Yeah, the monitor comes with a little icon on the Today Screen with which you can explicitly enable/disable GPRS as well. So obviously it can be done by external software
GPRS disconnect on O2 XDA mini S
If I tap the GPRS icon on the top bar when I have a GPRS connection up, I get an option to disconnect it (and it works!). I too don't like the thought of racking up data calls even though it is supposed to be packets switched not circuit switched.
no worries vijay, thanks for your time.
will just have to remember to switch off manually for now.

How can i turn GPRS off?

My vario randomly connects to GPRS without asking me, i suspect this will be costing me on my bill, so I'd like to turn it off. How do i do that?
my XDA mini s does the same. But it is a WM problem. Let me describe my common situation.
Connected to Wifi, running MSN Messenger. Left device for a while and it went sleeping. It also turns off Wifi! But then when MSN needs to connect in the background, it goes to GPRS!! When I wake up my device, it has already used GPRS for MSN and when it wakes, it tries to connect back to my Wifi!!!!
I'm on roaming so the GPRS is dear-er.
Best way, is to create a null modem, or invalid connection. Set your device to connect to that null connection automatically when requesting for internet access. Not the best, but at least it won't cost you or me.
The thing is it does it when I'm not even doing anything, it just pops that gprs icon up and does its own thing.
OK I didnt quite follow what you said there, so imagine I'm an idiot who dosent understand what a null connection is, then explain it to me again....
Long press hang-down key.... (2-3 sec)

lol like your response,
I do agree with Humps, dont know of a way to turn of the gprs but his way does ensure it wont connect on its own.
when you goto settings/connections/connections (this is wm2003 that i refer to) you will see your t-mobile settings.
and the options to manage existing connections. go into here and create a new connection give it anyname you want (you want it not to work) give it any settings it will accept that are wrong,
then from the connections page at the bottom you have tasks and advanced.
when you want GPRS active goto advanced and select t-mobile
when you dont want it to be able to connect go back to the advanced screen and select the dodgy one you just created.
then if it tries to connect the settings will all be wrong and it will fail.
good plan.
I really wish it would ask permission to go online with gprs...personally I changed the name of the access point in my o2 settings, so it can't connect until I change it back to the proper name.

Even after a 30 second press, it still stays connected with the 'G' icon in the top of the screen.
I've tried setting up a new GPRS called dummy, so I'll se how it goes.
Is it the big [G] icon, or the small G with arrows around it?
Because the former just means that GPRS is available - only the latter means that you're connected to it.
you want to give SPB GPRS Monitor a try, even if only for the trial it will let you know if its using any while its idle,
good app would be well worth keeping in it.

GPRS always auto disconnects after some time

I found a lot of posts where people ask for auto disconnect. My problem is the other way round: When I connect with GPRS after some 5 minutes or so my QTEK S200 disconnects by itself. This might be caused by the cab file MP_autoDisconnect_EnableDRM_prophetUA(AKU2.0)_060112.cab which I found in enhanced ROM?
I don't want to hard reset to see the effect this cab not beeing installed. Any ideas to help???
I have the same problem... lets see if anyone knows how to enable GPRS for longer then only 6 minutes.
I have the same problem... lets see if anyone knows how to enable GPRS for longer then only 6 minutes.
it's because of your mobile operator. i've the same sh.t here. it keeps disconnecting after 5-10 minutes and the traffic rounds up. and i have to pay more... i've a hima, my friend's SE W800 - same crap, keeps disconnecting. i'm sick of GSM networks, they're getting old and do not meet modern speed and reliability requirements. so i'm afraid we'll just have to wait until WiMAX or something else comes to replace an old man. cheers
You might wanna try this from wiki here:
If you want your GPRS (or EDGE) connection to always be on, set the following:
HKLM\Comm\ConnMgr\Providers\{7C4B7A38-5FF7-4bc1-80F6-5DA7870BB1AA}\|gprs connection name|\AlwaysOn = 1 (DWORD decimal)
And to turn it off:
HKLM\Comm\ConnMgr\Providers\{7C4B7A38-5FF7-4bc1-80F6-5DA7870BB1AA}\|gprs connection name|\AlwaysOn = 0 (DWORD decimal)
Note that |gprs connection name| will depend on the name you've given your GPRS connection
I'm on tmobile web n walk, so its a pain to wait for gprs to reconnect everytime.... I've just started using this for about a day, but looks ok so far... try it... see if its the magic ur looking for

I don't think it's connected to the provider as I know enough people using the same provider where GPRS stays connected a long time. The only difference we have is the PPC. I will try jamichy's solution later this week when I will be back home. In the meantime Craic Dub - does it solve the problem on your side?

O.k. I couldn't wait and tested today. Now the connection seems to stay as long as you do not stop it.
But: It connects automatically to GPRS when you connect the phone to your provider. That's not really what I wanted. In other countries this will create extreme roaming costs.
Any other idea on how to stop this auto connect? Even using phonealarm's "do not start GPRS automatically" does not help, again it starts connecting when you dial in your Phone PIN.
:?
Seems the Reg Hack is not a brilliant idea... I have setup my device to power off display after 2min... when i press power button to come out of standby, it freezes the device for abt 40 to 50 sec
Its worse when i get an incoming call, the screen is on but does not respond to touch or pressing green button...
So i changed registry back... and bingo, everythings ok again....
But now, i've found another way, a little freeware app that does all I want and more, and you get the option to choose connect gprs on boot or connect when needed... etc... take a look at:
http://www.gb-soft.cz/XDAII/product_gprs_tweak_wm5pe_en.htm
I'm using now, and seems ok

Sounds interesting. Still difficult for me to understand what it really does:
- What means "search GPRS [G] on start radio"
- What means "start [G] on start GPRS
- What means "Switch GRPS always On/Off hold till for following connection"
Can you tell me what it does non your side? Im a startting to hesitate trying to many things. I am still not convinced of WM5 - I installed GPS pgrs monitor (on QTEK CD...) which did not work together with phone alarm. And to deinstall was the ususal WM5 hassle, only using sktools and manual deletion of a file after another soft reser I was able to remove it again
Search GPRS ON start radio=gprs connects on startup
Start G on start GPRS=gprs connects when an application needs web connection, and stays connected
Switch GRPS always On/Off hold till for following connection=default settings, connect when needed, then disconnect
Havent had the phone freeze problem, and gprs connects on startup, and stays connected... which is fine for my tariff, tmobile web n walk unlimited gprs
