Hi, someone here asked me why I am not willing to go back to PPC2002
and flash SER 1.2 after using the beta PPC2003 ROM, and I figured it might be a good idea to start a thread recording our experiences, pros and cons, if you'd like...
So here goes:
(+)
For starters, PPC2003 has systemwide ClearType, a feature that I like
very much; it changes the daily experience in every application providing
a cleaner and more streamlined look.
The new phone app is better because it has a mute button,
and when a quickdial shortcut is lost you can repair it quickly.
The always on GPRS really works now.
A phonecall comes in, and it allows you to pick or not;
when the call ends you're back in your GPRS session without doing anything.
The system appears more stable, even though it is a beta;
the SIP panel (input) allows me to use multiple options, like InterKey (for my Greek, since I am that),Fitaly, and RapidCalc.
Previously, (even with the SER ROM) I could only have ONE more SIP
and only if I set that to be the default upon reboot, the others wouldn't work.
The new PIE is more compatible with standards, Windows Media is now 9-compliant,
the .NET framework is in ROM, the dual volume PDA/Phone slider is a welcome feature,
meeting requests can be sent through SMS, ipv6 and vpn support is built in;
my year-old phone feels new and cool. Need I say more?
(-)
There are some apps that don't work yet, check
http://www.manueldelatorre.com/ppc2003/
but I'm confident they will be eventually be made compatible.
I now spend more time using my phone, and with T-Mobile unlimited GPRS for $20, the always on functionality has me so far using 55MB this month
Thoughts :?:
vagelis
I agree with everything you said about the PPC2003 dev/beta. I reloaded it about four times last week before I decided to stay with PPCPE 2002 and the XDA-DEV SER 1.1 ROM.
What did it for me was I was unable to use one of my most used apps that being Ink Spot off line news reader. I tried to live without it but I couldn't do it...man! Its not easy kicking a habit...
My only reason to go back to 2002 is the alarm clock. Since I don't have one I use this feature a lot. But after a snooze it will sound again like it should, but the display hangs! So I can't press or snooze, so I have to reset the device (with my sleepy head  ). After the reset the alarm will sound and I can dismiss or snooze it. A little annoying or I should learn to get out of my bed without snoozing
But I miss the ClearType now and my girlfriend is missing Jawbreaker!!! Ze almost killed my for going back to 2002!
Well since the alarm sound of the 2002 will NOT sound sometimes and the 2003 WILL sound but you can't dismiss it, I think 2003 is better. And also PocketMVP runs quicker on 2003 then on 2002 so I'm going back to 2003 tonight, because of all of this!
(Well oke not because of all that, but because my girlfriend is going to kill me if she can't play Jawbreaker anymore  )
Overal I hope they will 'leak' a new 2003 version soon, or better: release the official 2003 update!
You know the new version of Pocket Plus is PPC2003 compatible, and it ads repeatable, increasing volume alarms. And I think Super Alert works, too. SuperAlert allows an mp3 file to play with Alarm events; you can wake up with your favorite song
I know PocketPlus is 2003 compliant and will add repeating, but even then it will sound continously, but the display hangs. (BTW PocketPlus rules!)
But I will definitly check out SuperAlert! MP3 playing rules en hopefully it will be reliable!
I let you now, thanks!

Hi all,
I'd like to create and use some phone profile (outdoor, office, beeper, silent...) on my Jam!
Is there any good program?
Yeah, I don't have the URL, but do a web search for PocketZenPhone. It's awesome.
Try this.
Works fine on my MDAc
http://www.modaco.com/Latest_Version-t205779.html
Try this too: http://www.pocketmax.net/phoneAlarm.htm
It basically what the other two software does but with more functions.
Hi, this util looks cool, can you confirm if it will work on my XDAII??
yeah I can confirm it! and this is a kill app!!!
PhoneAlarm works wonder, really a great tool.
PocketZenPhone
PocketZenPhone (http://zendrui.free.fr/index.htm)
It is the best. Install it as a tray icon (better than today plug-in)
I dont think so, I prefer the today plugin and besides profiles PhoneAlar m does so many more things like controlling BT and GPRS, showing SMS,MMs, EMAIL, VOICEMAIL and missed calls. PocketZenPhone may have the tray icon and I'd love to see that in PhoneAlarm but the interface of PZP is locking relly ... well crappy.
I like the possibility to choose my profile in PPCProfilesPro by using the keys instead of the stylus.
Big icons and also BT-Control.
But will give phoneAlarm a chance. We will see.....
Advantage of PPCProfilesPro: Free
That is very true. BUT using phonealarm you can use the keys to change profiles too! And it has BT control too besides WLAN can GPRS control. And it has built in data tracking and a billing option.
PPCProfilesPro is the free version and because of that will always have a huge plus but when it comes to functionality and style I think phonealarm is best. Would PPCProfilesPro cost too, it would be easy to favor phonealarm but since PPCProfilesPro is free this is tough.
It all comes down to your wallet, can you affort to spend a few bucks - then phonealarm is the better choice. If not, PPCProfilesPro will do fine.
PocketZenPhone for me
Having looked at the various options here, I chose PocketZenPhone, for three reasons:
1. Reasonable $7 registration price.
2. Can be set up as a tray icon, today plug-in, or both.
3. Integrated with Outlook. Now my phone will never go off during a meeting again. I simply set PocketZenPhone to turn off the sound and ringer whenever a calendar event occurs. Works great.
Note that I liked the tray icon so much that I didn't try the today plug-in.
Haven't seen any trial information (e.g. 5day full use or limited functions) for phoneAlarm?
I'm trying PhoneAlrm anc "Zen" but... too complex for what I need!
I'm just lookin' for a simple program that let me chose a profile (okay for today plugin or try or toolbar...) that impact only on phone ringin'/type level and PDA reminder/sms (I think these two levels are just what appairs when tap the symbol ov volume...)
I tried last version of PPCProfilePro but seems to lock my Jam.... :-(

Would you please describe this lock in your Jam?
Maybe I have the same problem and could so a have the chance to find the problem.
I have the same problem on my S100 with PPCProfiles Pro.
After installation and restart, my ppc hangs and I have to do an hard-reset!
Luky me, I have done a full backup before installation.
It's strange, because at the PpcProfiles support forum many people use this software with the same hardware.
At the end of the story, I choose PhoneAlarm instead PocketZenPhone, firstly for profile switching by keys, and secondly for better UI.

IIRC, It trials for 30 days. Both PZP and PA has their strengths...
I install the old PPCProfile-Pro V2.00c and it works fine!
U can read my problems in this thread...
http://forum.xda-developers.com/viewtopic.php?t=28906
but 3 days ago a missed my PPCProfile Icons and I had to reinstall PPCProfile. From this my problem seemed to be solved.
(Knock.Knock.Knock on Wood...)
Thanks to Markino for your hint to identify the application which makes my problem!!!
@thehobbit78
The newest version of PPCProfile can change the profiles with the keys on the today screen as well.
Since yesterday I try both: PPCProfile and PhoneAlarm because i found no possibility to see the alarm icons AND all my profiles at the same time!
Hi, over a year ago I bought a copy of MS Voice Command on my XDA2. I struggled to get it to work effeciently/consistently enough, and I felt I couldn't quite get the right accent
Anyway, I kinda like the software but it was hit and miss if it picked it up.
Now the jasjar comes with a voice recognition software, preloaded, which I think works very well, using voice tags.
I do not believe though it will call out appointment details though or reminders etc, which I know MS VC will.
I note from the MS website that u can upgrade for free, so I was wondering if peeps think it is a worthwhile app to load. Is the newer version any better than the old version.
I value all comments about using MS Voice Command on jasjar.
Cheers, Numb
Running it on my jasjar. You can hack it to start recognising when you hit your BT headset button (search for posts by me and you'll find the instructions).
You need V1.5 to work properly and you will have to muck about a bit as the installer doesn't seem to like AS4.
Great piece of software though.
V1.5 is a big improvement on V1.0. The version notes actually mention improvements that were made specifically for PPC PE devices. I have found it now to be 95% accurate, whereas with V1.0, i would generally have to repeat commands most of the time. Good luck with it!
Regards
Chris
re
well I have messed around with this for nearly 2.5 hours trying to load v1.5 on the jasjar with no success. I either don't have 1.0 installed or an older version is installed on the phone. Now am really frustrated.
Flipping heck how frstrating
Cheers, Numb
It causes mucho bugs
I would definietly avoid it, it will kill your skype, and slow the machine down. wait for wm5 fixes
re
well as I can't even load it I think I will have to wait for the WM5 version. Knowing my luck though MS will probably charge for this upgrade. I just feel that if VC was working well on the device, it would be perfect
Cheers, Numb
I was able to install MS Voice Command 1.5 by first running the installer, then grabbing the CAB file from the program files directory on the PC, copying it over to the JJ, then executing the CAB on the JJ. Still working on getting it to work over BT.
Good luck!
Is there anybody who can't find his/her Universal veeeeryyyy veerryyyyy sloooow????
If yes, which 3rd party softwares installed?
I'm really thinking about selling it.
I really love VGA, 3G, and other things, but I feel I have 286 PC with a MacG5 hardware chances.
If I want my VGA PDA to run well, I should not install most of appications written nowadays.
I'm really really sad.
What to do?
Who is the hero who finds his toy acceptable?
And HHHHOOOOOWWWWW????
I'm not an amateur - very very not -, but I'd like to use the abilities of the Universal, but it seems, it can't give me its capabilities. I have to chose which app I want very well and which not.
HEEEEEEEELP!!!
SOMEBODYYYYY!!!!
As I said already in other thread, my Exec is running very fast, screen orientation change is very quick, I have no delay in answering phone calls, always over 21-22 Mb memory and it doesn't freeze at all.
I soft reset it every 4-5 days.
Applications that I have now installed (all of them in phone memory) after trying many others are:
- MohairSofa Calendar+ Today PlugIn
- Insignia Solutions JeodeRuntime
- Vijay555 VJOkButt
- Softick Card Export II
- Softatics Corporation xConverter Pro ( great software!!!!)
- Macromedia Flash Player ActiveX
- Handmark Monopoly
- Kasuei Hitchhiker
- Microsoft .NET CF 2.0
- TCPMP The Core Pocket Media Player
- PHM Registry Editor
- GreenSoftware GSFinder+
Everything is running absolutely flawless.
I have UMTS connection avaliable 95% of the times, I'm using Orange UK 3G Sim
My radio is the 1.04 version and I see absolutely no reason for update.
I had many problems before, which seemed to dissapear after a careful selection of software installed.
Thanx the answer.
"I had many problems before, which seemed to dissapear after a careful selection of software installed." - You wrote
Yes, you are right, but I don't want to be careful to select which software I can use.
I WANT TO USE ALL THE SOFTWARES I USED WITH MY O2 XDAIIi !!!
Why is it a big wish?
It is the same if you buy a laptop, and you can use just WindowsXP with Opera Browser, a 3rd party calculator and some ActiveX plugin.
If this device can use just these few apps without freezing or crashing and with acceptable speed, then this is just ten pence a schilling. ( ) (I just learned this in english)
In this case I'd rather buy a stable, fast and old Nokia phone.
OK. I'm trying to write what I'm using:
With the Storage:
- SBSH iLauncher 2.2
- SBSH Pocket Breeze 5
- Marsware WeatherPanel
- AlarmToday
- DKtoday
- PocketZenphone
- WisbarAdvance2
- Wisbar Desktop
- Dinarsoft HandyMenu
- Dinarsoft MemMaid
- Double Launcher
- Macromedia FlashPlayer
- Spb GPRSmonitor
- XCPUscalar
- PDAmill Topkey
- RescoExplorer
- Novosec SmartFilter
- Sunnysoft BackupManager
- PhatWare PhatPad
- Microsoft VB Runtimes for PPC
- RescoViewer
On Storage Card:
- Resco PocketRadio
- MobiMate WorldMate 2006 professional
- SKtools
- OmegaOne 1-Calc
- Astro WinCE
- PocketMusic
- Cash Organizer 05
- ListPro
- Bryht FlashPlayer
- Opera
- TomTom Navigator 5
- Aeromap VR3
- CheckNotifications
- Tweaks2k2
- PocketMechanic
- System Monitor Pro
- eWallet
- VITO MobileDownloader
- VITO SoundExplorer
- WiFiFoFum
- OutlookCleaner
- PocketEarth
- PocketWorldInfo
- SpbImageer
- XnView Pocket
- PocketArtist
.........and many more with a lot of games in 2GB SD
I know this is not a small list but I used all of these on my 2020i without any problem. I used PocketInformant too but I found it really slow on Universal so I decided not to install it.
Maybe You have a question: then why do not use 2020i?
Simple answer: I really hate HTC showing me what is a VGA PDA with 3G.
That is why. I fuc*ing love it and I feel I cannot live without VGA and 3G.
So, if somebody has some experience in upper softs and knows errors or bugs with using them on Universal, please write it to me.
Sorry, but I will never believe that you need and are using all of these applications. And this is definitely the list to slow down your universal.
I like to keep my PC and Pocket PC clean and install only what I need, not what I MAY USE ONE DAY. Clutter is not good in any situation!
And so far it works for me.
And another thing is that many of the applications you have installed are enormous in size: Pocket Breeze, SPB Pocket Plus, Wisbar Advance, MobiMate World Mate Pro,Wisbar Desktop. And there is plenty applications doing the same things which are not only many times smaller in size, faster, and free. Like for example Pocket Breeze and Calendar+ or SPB Pocket Plus and VJOKbutt and VJTrayLaunch.
And don't you think that you sound silly and childish when you say that because you don't want uninstall few of these applications you will stop yourself from using all of them and buy a Nokia. Go for it, in the meantime I will enjoy using my fast, reliable Exec with all the applications I need...
In one part you have right in other part you don't have.
If you believe or not I'm using almost all of these applications almost every day.
Maybe I can find some which I really don't need but which you wrote in your slowapps-list I really love and if these are forbidden softs with a PDA I'm not sure I'd like to use them.
BUT!!!!
I've been using PDA-phones for years!!!!
I have not any problems with speed and stability before.
I used all of these applications.
WHY IS IT PROBLEM FOR THE NEWEST AND MOST EQUIPPED PDA??????
I'm not able to accept this.
(Spb PocketPlus I'm not using, I found it slower than other slow applications)

Good night/morning...Enjoy your new Nokia
Yes, this is a threat.
Real problem is I'm in a special relationship with my Universal: Hate&Love.
I can't live with and without it.
Maybe I should find a specialist?
Is it a psychic problem now?
been smoking something?
Frankly I understand your angst and kind of feel cheated myself after spending so much money on the Exec. Right now I am down to barebones in terms of the s/w that I have installed on it and inspite of that, it is really slow. One realises how slow the Exec is after having used the XDAII which was blazing fast with at least 3 times more s/w installed. I still have the XDA II and just checked it again... boy it is FAST!
Understandably, I too am dissapointed with this device.
Cheers, Vikas.

@Tuningszocske
Same here. love and hate.
With my Nokia 9500 I never worried about how much s/w I installed (especailly with 80mb of user storage) but with my Exec I now only use Agenda Fusion, MS Reader (which is buggy), Opera & Mobireader.
Personally I don't think the problem is from the device itself, but the software. WM5 seems to run a lot slower than 2003SE, and even with faster CPUs and more memory, it's kinda like trying to run Windows XP on a Pentium 500... In other words, we'll need to wait for the hardware to mature and specs to be much more advanced to run WM5 at full speed. The hardware manufacturers also have to learn to use the new functions of the new OS, and learn to work around its quirks, but this can be solved by firmware updates.
So yeah, the Universal is great, as long as you keep things relatively simple with it.
Answering your question is a bit of a personal preference. But for me, I am very happy with my EXEC. This is my first Pocket PC coming from a TH55/E1 Palm OS. Anyone who owned a TH55 knows it only can run applications at 144 MHz, with tons of applications installed it was very slow in opening applicaions, but once opened it runs smoothly. So for me, coming from a slow device to my EXEC is like a blessing. PLUS, as mentioned above, I only install applications that I really use and tend not to clutter my 2GB SD card which I use mostly for keeping my MP3s and Movies. I have no complaints so far. I never had any of the problems described in some threads like being slow, delayed rings, bluetooth problems, etc...
more than happy with it, only a few gripes, but that is towards the 3rd party applications with exception of the lack of a backup function, in general it is fast enough, considering it is a pda phone.
for speed, I just whip out my Sony VAIO laptop not as portable nor as light, but each has there uses
this however looks very interesting

Hi all,
Yes - despite having an SPV for over a year (Palm os Treo 600 before that), I must say I'm still forced to draw one conclusion:
Bloated OS on an underpowered device.
I had hoped that after the CE days they would have sorted this out, but had so many problems with my BA being slow and hanging (how cool is it to say "sorry, my ohone just crashed?!"), I did look at the M5000 (wizzard).
I may be wrong on this but I believe the main problems with the BA - namely battery life, memory and cpu speed - weren't upgraded for the wizzard. And, unfortunately, I had to decide that the Wizard is just TOO BIG.
IS it me, but does anyone actually NEED the h/wkeyboard?
So, am going on with a barebones BA, and have bought a motorola V31 as a "propr phone"! Hopefully when i come to replac my phone in 12 months time, things will have got much faster and better in PPC phones....
Yes, I know they can do some very cool things, but I really didnt find the BA a very reliable phone.
Perhaps it's too cumbersome for a phone, and too small for a laptop?
Right idea - keep going - lets see where we are in a year!!
man how people complain...
dont like it, sell it, simple
i dont have a hate relationship at all, i just love it all the way...
i use lots, but again selective, even my existing configurations can make the device run slow, so i just dont use them for a while and switch them back on when I want to change it.
I have the perfect, fast efficient machine, and if I want to make it look pretty, make it do more functions simultaneously, I accept that it will slow down. Try loading any computer up with 60% - 80% drain on its available ram and its gonna slow down.
The issues are nearly all with the third party applications, the bare bones machine with minimal extended rom installs means I also dont miss a call, rings on the second ring, screen rotation the first time is sub 2 seconds, and subsequently sub 1 second.
I love the bluetooth, keyboard, vga, 3 g, I also like the clam close to protect my screen so that I dont need a case, it just fits in the pocket if I am not wearing tight jeans....
Device is SPB PP (beta), SPB Diary, SPB Weather, SPB Backup (Beta), Resco Explorer, M$VC, KSE True Fax
Card... TCPMP, Resco Audio, Resco Radio, Resco Pictures, Wizbar 2 and Desktop (to play not use), 1 Calc, MS Reader, Bluepoint world and earth, and games
Yes you have to be choosy on your apps, but these are the software developers fault for not correctly utilising and keeping upto date with the change in technology, the permanent storage rather than pure RAM, and thus calling permanent storage information into RAM whn it is in storage.
We wanted permanent storage, but the developers have written applications for the the 2003/SE system and "adapted" to the WM2005 system, and it isnt that adaptable.
They must catch up , they will catch up, but dont whinge about your phone, it works, it works well, the apps are the are that screw it up.
Again, dont like it, sell it, stop whinging, some of you guys sound worse that my missus....
This is not a whinge forum, it is a help and contribute forum to share and develop knowledge.
@simon_darley, okay a balancing view. But lets not promote the Universal as being fault free because this is not true: SMS causing freezing, delayed call alert and loss of data after soft reset. Not making this up, I have suffered these problems.

Hello,
I have a QTEK 9000 and:
1. SMS never froze
2. Call Alert always rings in my phone mid-first-ring (i use a 50k mp3)
3. data loss after soft? not sure what this is about
What ROM are you using BTW? Just curious.
@Jorgee, suggest you have a quick look at this forum. There are lots of threads about the problems I mentioned. Regarding the call alert, I have now installed the new Radio ROM and there are significant improvements for finding a weak signal and call alert is also much better. The SMS freez was with my JJ which I have now sold. The loss of data - again the architecture of the Universal does mean this can happen. If RAM data is not written to ROM because of a fault. Again lots of posts on this here at this forum.

Hi,
Is it me or are there no Phone Profiles on the Ameo(or any other PocketPC phone)? This is my first PocketPC phone and before I used to have a Nokia phone which has Phone Profiles (for eg. silent, meeting, outdoor, etc.)
Is there a good application which can do this and works with the Ameo?
TIA
I think you may be correct in that there are no "built in" profiles in Windows mobile phone edition. I have just checked on my HP HW6915 ( running wm5) and the profile app I use is written for the phone by HP.
Maybe some other peps on the forum with other phones may be able to clarify more.

Phone Alarm for PPC/PE
No it's not a native feature of Pocket PC's in general, but there are applications that do the same thing and more.
Try Phonealarm by PocketMax. Link below.
http://www.pocketmax.net/phoneAlarm.html
Just make sure to download VGA specific skins.
Thanks!
I already installed it. Looks like this has it all for me. I'm going to try it the coming days.
It is still a bit strange that something like this isn't standard on the Ameo.
I use WM profiles and have tried phone weaver and spb phone suite but they seem to lack a bit in the actual "profile" dept. Sure you can have them go to flight mode and change your ringtone and volume and stuff but I need a little more than that.
I would like to be able to control everything pretty much in the notifications area with each profile change.
Example: To be able to change whether new emails will alert or not. Or, what reminder alert to use or if reminders repeat or not. It seems simple to pull all the info from the sounds/notifications settings at scheduled times or manually. But it may not be.
Just wondering if anyone has any input on this. A good profile application is very useful.

Try PhoneAlarm from pocketmax.net, I think you will find almost all options you can imagine for the profiles.

Yep ive used phonealarm for a long time now, the best feature is the automatic progile change based on location/power status etc...
PhoneAlarm is certainly a champ, great software.
But if you just need Profiles, I have to say SBSH PhoneWeaver is great. Nice options, simple and light on resources. The enable/disable Push email is fantastic.
PhoneAlarm is nice if you also want repeating notifications and a Today plugin that displays counters and other info. I use rlToday for that so it was overkill for just profiles.
PocketZenPhone seems to be doing for me more than any other apps listed above.
agree 100% to moisha. I am using PocketZenPhone for years now. It is one of the software pieces I bought!
I bouhgt PZP one year ago. It was working very nice on my Wizard and on my Orbit (bouth WM5)

PocketZenPhone is the one to go for
At least, that's my personal opinion. I've been using it for a few years now as well.
With regards to WM6, I've recently flashed my Charmer to WM6 and PZP is still working OK and without any problems.
Is there also any freeware tool available?
Yes, I have been using PhoneAlarm and it's pretty good too. Give it a try.
Think there's some free one out there. Do a check. Can't remember the name now.
I use Profiles for Windows Mobile ( h**p://www.winmobileapps.com/device/pocketpc/pwm/pwm.aspx )
Excellent piece of software . lightweight stable and flawless
