Xperia Z Google Edition|Coming July|US Exclusive - Xperia Z General

Sony will announce a Google Edition of the Xperia Z, much like the Samsung S4 and HTC One. This is said by a Sony insider, and purported to be announced sometime in July. Apparently, even with the AOSP for Xperia Z, it's apparently too differcult/not for mass market, so they'll be distributing the Google Edition running 4.2.2 on the Play Store, EXCLUSIVELY FOR THE US. It'll have all the same features as the current Xperia Z with no hardware changes, and probably cost around $599 (the same as a launch day PS3).
Are you guys excited for a proper pure Android Xperia Z rather then the buggy AOSP? Personally, I'd prefer a Google Edition Xperia Play, with a 720p screen (games don't need to go that much higher on a sub-5inch screen) on a 4.7inch screen with updated internals, a Tegra 4 with an upgraded GPU and better battery. It could then be the standard bearer for Android gaming, and propel PlayStation Mobile and PS4 cross compatibility forward into public consciousness better, and raise the bar for mobile gaming as a whole (in my opinion, the NVidia Shield is more of a tech demo then anything).

Don't care unless i can flash it's firmware on my xz. Not gonna buy the same phone again just for aosp :S.

Sorry but they won't the reason why their are Nexus versions of the S4 and One is because people are literally screaming for it, sure their are some sony fans screaming for it but the numbers are considerably lower.
Sony has a few guys who maintian AOSP, they will stick with that for some time, Also SOny has commited to the mutli-model strategy, our Yuga is no longer being actively cared for by Sony, they are preparing their next device and all we can rely on Sony for is 4.2 and 4.3 updates in the next year or so.

The Xperia Z is still very much still the flagship at least in the UK. Advertising everywhere, loads of TV spots. And the AOSP doesn't get the same Android release schedule as any of the Google Edition phones which share the same Android release cycle as the Nexus phones.

Assuming everything would be signed by Sony I assume the ftf for this would be flashable even on locked bootloaders?

So I got the Google Keyboard - it is far, FAR better then the stock Android keyboard. It is literally better in every way. It's smooth, with better prediction and better implementation of the Swype-like features. Before, if you typed a word on the stock Xperia Z keyboard, some of the suggested words couldn't be clicked on because they were covered by the grey things surrounding each word or where the next letter would go. I can only imagine how good a completely pure Android version would feel. Right now I'd consider getting CM10 or something and getting Bravia Engine 2 and the Walkman app on it.

Good point. I assume these aren't separated in the ftf? (full disclosure: I've not looked into the structure of an ftf yet, only got my XZ last week).

Waiting for the ROM
Sent from my C6603 using Tapatalk 4 Beta

A ROM would be really nice - I've had a taste of pure Android and want more.

Apparently it's quite likely that it'll be available as a ROM for normal Xperia Z's

Sony might even announce the Google Edition Xperia Z at E3. They might sneak it in somewhere as part of integrating their phones into the playstation ecosystem.

News? why i see just S4 and One Google Edition?

Just for your information: the left side is how the Xperia Z looks now, the right side is how the Google Edition would look like:

That's apart from all the features you would be missing of course. Easy choice for me
Might be useful for developers however, because that's where Nexus/Google Edition is meant for.

Pure Android
What makes Sony different from others? I would never buy a Sony with pure OS because it will lost its beautiful features, lost some functions. Compared to other phones, I still love the elegant design of Sony, if you all use pure android, then there will be no different among Sony, Htc, samsung...

can't wait to see the XZ GE,.... and i think we can flash the XZ GE FTF via flashtool on LB & UB!

Can we stop with all the speculation. Look what happened with the galaxy s3.
Wait for official word from Sony.
We had the same speculation about a dual core device last year and we ended up with the arc s.
Have you fellas not learnt anything.
Goodness.
I'll tell you now, besides the S and the Ion, we will not see any other flagship devices from Sony this year.
At the most, you might see a beefed up S but judging by sales figures, that's looking less likely by the day.
One flagship per year. That's the only strategy that makes any sense for all concerned. Consumers as well as for manufacturers.

I can confirm the device exists and is to be released in 2012.
Sent from my LT26i using XDA
Well I don't see how it won't be a real phone...
But I think it will indeed be like the Arc > Arc S situation, and it will be a sort of higher spec Xperia S.
The specs according to the rumors make it out to be that in my opinion...
I will buy Hayabusa if its specs will be similar to Xperia S and design like our xperia aRc with some changes..
from xperia PLAY
It would make perfect sense in my opinion.
Shame though (if those pics above are correct) that they may ditch the light bar. I was hoping they would hold on to it, because I truly love that feature . The S4 with that rumored arc form would appease the spec junkies and arc fans, and the S will appease the light bar monolith phone people, so everyone's happy .

ICS on launch date? Sweet!
That PDF is legit. Marketing divisions get them before launch, but this is pretty incredible how the whole press got leaked.
Anyways, Hayabusa will be slightly different in terms of design. It won't be full white like the GX. I personally like the GX more in terms of looks though.

Why Sony (Ericsson) is better than others?

Most of you have been complaining about how crap is Sony etc etc. Just because they don't give you HDMI sources or Jelly Bean or whatever, doesn't make them bad.
Just a video, what I found on YouTube, that Sony can be better than Samsung.
Feel free to post more stuff if you wish.
Sound on headphiones much loder then on any htc or apple or any other phone i think is about 20% louder
The colors look more saturated on GSII, but more real on Arc. IMO
Another thing that I like of Sony (and the reaason why I'll stick to their phones) is their UI, they take care of almost every single detail, the icons, the music player, everything.
Very nice video

I like that sony sell device cheaply. At any price point sony hardware are better than other oem.
There's plenty of other thing that i like on Sony's. And my final grip on sony suckness has been remedy by Google abandoning nexus s and xoom at 4.1.

I guess Sony is back with a vengeance. I like many things that Apple and Samsung bring to the mobile market, but I'm tired of watching this duopoly develop, so I'm glad to see more competition and a disruption to that dupoply. I don't know where all you guys live, but where I live, almost ALL of the Samsung phones are almost as expensive as the Apple ones and at that they are all black retangular boring objects with NO differentiation. I'm glad to see NEW price points, COLOUR and CHOICE. Sadly, HTC, Sharp and others seem to have been falling apart in the last couple of years so any more competition is good.
(As for the resources, if you Google the stories you'll find a resource that you may prefer, these two were more credible for me.)

apparently steve jobs took inspiration from sony devices when designing the iphone. I read about it on xperia blog a couple of months ago
Possibly, but this must've been before there were smartphones, when the closest thing were PalmOS, Samsung devices pre iPhone looked like the iPhone, funny how nobody really knows that, and obviously iOS is very similar to PalmOS. But it's easy to nit pick, I don't really know what Sony phones used to look like...

Hdmi is ``a big'' difference, without adapters.
The HDMI sources isn't a great argument to hate them, if they write it themselves, which the probably do as they specialize in different electronics that use their code, most likely at least, so it's no surprise the its closed source, as it cost them money.
Anyway on a side note of that, I'm using Xperia ultimate HD 2, which is based on stock 4.0.4, so it has HDMI on the stock, I don't know why people would want to cripple their phone by using a limited version of a ROM, missing out on Sony's added apps, like X-Loud, Bravia Engine, HDMI, and a 3rd party camera app that sometimes is lower quality. It just isn't worth it IMO, if you're buying a phone like this you want the best you can get from the hardware and software, and Sony do a pretty good job with their version of Android. Let us not forget they gave us ICS before anyone outside Google.

The next version of android will be called kit kat and it will be version 4.4. What a bummer for key lime pie fans..
P. S. I love kit kat..

There's nothing about features yet, but we could see the new release next month. So lets start speculating.
I have one small worry though. 4.3 is expected in the coming weeks, and the Z1 goes live tomorrow, so we're now third in place for future updates. Kinda sucks don't you think?

"It's our goal with Android KitKat to make an amazing Android experience available for everybody."
Everybody hm...My guess is, that KK will be optimized more than we might expect. Obviously not everybody has a high end device. You CANNOT fully enjoy android 4.X on a low/mid spec phone. It gets the job done, but is nowhere near the experience you get on a high end phone. Hell, 4.X is often / laggy on quadcore phones with 2 gigs of ram. I believe that we can expect a big performance jump on every phone.

High-five brother :highfive::highfive::highfive::highfive::highfive:
I was wondering the same thing. Google isn't looking to make Android for performance-driven devices only. The the sucky part is that OEMs aren't going to update older phones with the new software. Mainly because the hardware is outdated and not supported, like say a TI OMAP chipset and Tegra 2. I'm pretty sure Xperia S owners are going to start cribbing about this in a few months too. Bringing Android to everyone is a forward looking statement where new devices, both low-end and high-performance, will be able to run the OS smoothly.

I wouldnt be sure about that. Sale of mobile phones is on its best in the first five/six months, then it decreases. Mobile phones being over 1 year old are commonly taken as sold out and you hardly get it in any mobile network offer. For SONY and other brands those phones are not money-makers and no one will provide updates for them, its not cruelty its just economy. Another aspect is that if they do so i mean update older phones they will definitely lose some clients for new ones, its like im not going to but expensive new one cause there is no difference in buying cheaper: same software, apps, other features. Economy is a keyword for updates, most of older devices are capable of running newer software enough smoothly.

but I didn't know anaything about Photoshop. I only saw this picture this evening and want to share it with the community.
Nothing more, iam doesn't interested in faking information.
You are false in your mind, it's not Xperia Z Ultra, it's a xperia Z.
The attachment is the picture from ZU and it doesn't match

We already knew that 4.3 would come to our XZ, isn't it? http://blogs.sonymobile.com/2013/07/25/on-android-jelly-bean-4-3/
Though no firmware certification yet, so it won't be within a week

To me it does not look fake at all. Plus the FB belongs to Sony Mobile.. if people would only take a moment to check everything out before make themselves look stupid in comments.
So wuhuuu official 4.3 will be here soon.. and by the looks of it with the enhanced UI found on the Z Ultra and Z1. The way to go Sony.

Maybe you should take a moment to check:
Official Sony Mobile page - https://www.facebook.com/sonymobile
Community Sony Mobile page (link in the OP) - https://www.facebook.com/SonyXperiaZpage
It's 100% fake. Infact, it's not fake, it's just stating what we already know.
I think we all know they'll be updating the Xperia Z. It might not be the star of the show any longer but it certainly certified for 4.3. Sony themselves said they would update the phone. 4.3 doesn't really bring many most have features so I am not particularity rushing for it. What I do want are some of those xperia Z1 app enhancements in my Z.

Yes, Everybody knows that 4.3 update is coming... He/She just shared the information of the update may come soon.,,
But the question is will it get Z1 UI and some of the camera features..

I would rather Urge sony to drop 4.3 and directly upgrade to 4.4, i have a feeling if they do upgrade it to 4.3, it might be the last official update for Z

We dont know what specification will 4.4 require, but the rumour says that its gonna be refreshed, super-light even for 500mb RAM smartphones. That, and the fact Xperia Z is not even a year old, still supported by qualcomm, makes me sure it definitely will be upgraded to 4.4. What is more Xperia Z was truely (not counting me) first SONY phone, which attracts clients. I mean first which does matter on market ( S and T didnt matter at all), there is too many people who bought this device, if SONY abandon such a great group its gonna be disaster for future flagships.

Am I the only person who really does not cate? By the time the networks release an OTA (let's face it, the vast majority of users can't use flashtool, not everyone is rooted and such) we will be into like 4.9.

Very true, and the fact that Z finally started the Sony quest to be recognized as a serious contender in the Flagship race. The reason i am not looking forward to 4.3 is mainly because it does not bring anything new to the table, so if it had to be one upgrade, it would rather be the latest. That said we always have XDA and Z is a pretty good device on a whole, so we should keep getting unofficial support for sometime.

To be honest Sony have made their name fairly well. But like you said 4.3 doesn't seem to bring anything new to the table in terms of usability. That said I've only seen rumours and such rather than hard facts from Google themselves. It will be interesting to see what comes of it.

Is the Xperia Z3 Compact the next device for you?

Hey Guys and Gals
The Z3 Compact's specifications look very interesting, sharing many of the features of the flagship Xperia Z3, rolled up into a smaller package. The screen resolution is considerably lower, but with the smaller screen size, it still manages a reasonable ~319 ppi. With the flagship devices getting ever larger, its refreshing to see a manufacturer pack high-end hardware into a "mini" form factor. Great for those who don't want or don't need a 5"+ screen. Throw in PS4 remote play, its a tidy little package. Who's getting one? Would anybody consider this over its larger brother?

I just hope Sony releases the phone in North America timely, I hate when manufacturers announce new and exciting products but make us wait months and months unending till all the euphoria dies.
But the good news is that it is currently listed on both the US/CA Sony online store as "coming soon" though UK store already has it for pre-order.
Already ordered
I'm switching from iPhone 5. 6 is not for me.

Welcome to the club
The chance is 90% that I'll switch from the Xperia Z to the Xperia Z 3Compact
I'm definitely getting it, leaving my first Sony phone behind, a nice Xperia ZR which I absolutely love. I'll love the Z3 Compact even more

Im getting one, going from a htc one m7.
I'm definitely getting this one too.. Going from my 3 year old Galaxy S2 to this and I would prefer the Z3C any day over the Z3 itself. Even if both had identical pricing I would go with Z3C only as I have a strong preference for the smaller and the right footprint of Z3C. I want an android phone that can be comfortably operated with one hand and yet offers top of the line specs.
I currently have a GS5 but don't like Samsung, i am waiting for the iPhone announcement just to see what it brings but the Z3c is looking awesome and i am seriously considering going for it. My only annoyance is i think timescape ui looks a bit outdated hope they refresh it with the Android L update.
I can't decide between the Z3 and the Z3c. Just to put things in perspective, the screen on this thing is almost as large as the HTC One M7 and the rumored iPhone 6 but the overall device size is much smaller!
I Hope So... This Smartphone is Very Interesting for Me
I got a Z1 Compact, 6 months ago. Z3 Compact is definitelly worth upgrading to.
Plus, same res but bigger screen?
No.
Definitely, as soon as its available in India, but I'm confused between the white and the mint. White because the front is white too and mint is just adorable

On Android, 'ugly' UI shouldn't be an excuse, since you can always change the UI to your liking.

I know and it is possible, however i would like to keep it stock, Sony has the ability to install theme's on top of the UI and i can install nova and change alot and make it look good but there are a few elements which look really outdated like the floating apps menu, just would like them to make the UI fresh again Android L style would seem nice.

But then again that's an opinion. There are many people that won't agree with your points. So in the end they can't please everyone.
I don't think they will rush anything Android L, not even just a theme/skin. They will come with a skin when they bring out Android L for Sony devices.
