Nexus 4 Battery Life - Nexus 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hey Guys,
A bunch of people are complaining about the battery life on Nexus 4. I've been waited for a couple days since I got the device, to have enough confident about the battery before I make any post here. Yes, the phone battery drain pretty fast on the first few cycles. After a bunch more charges later, let me tell this, the battery life did get significantly better. It lasted about 10-15 hr depends on the load of the usage.
Here is my typical day, off the charge at 100% in the morning, listen to a few songs, checking emails, and messages while getting ready for school. About an 30mn to 1hr of internet browser and youtube videos while on the bus. By 1-2pm the battery drop the about 70-80%. I put the phone in silent mood til i'm done with all my classes. On the way back home on the bus, I listened to a bunch of music, web browsing, maybe a few phone calls, texts or games.
Compare to my old phone, Samsung Galaxy S2 T989, im impressed with the Nexus 4 battery life. My Galaxy S2 battery always die on the bus coming back home. What I'm trying to get at: if you're a light to medium user like me, then get this phone. I was hesitate at first because I always have bad experience with android battery life. But Google seem to get its OS right with this nexus device, mainly because the battery drain minimum while in sleeping mood.
Can you post your Nexus 4 battery performance screenshot if you have been using the phone for more than a few days ?

Is there supposed to be a question being asked? Or a statement as this is in the Q&A forum.
I agree with you on many points. People need to wait at least 5 to 7 days for the battery charge to fully kick in. The first days mean absolutely nothing as it is still being aligned plus the user is still installing apps and setting up their phone.
There are some notable problems in the default kernel that uses more battery Usage than normal too.

From full battery to this overnight + breakfast usage. Rasbean + Matr1x v3.0. Never seen anything like it. Coming from the GN, this phone is a different dimension altogether. On any aspect..

Had phone for 5 days. Drained phone to 10% then fully charged. Moderate to light use made it through a day.
Stock rooted + Franco Kernel.

Depends on how much screen time you got, which you didn't show us.

The trick is to be careful about using mobile data when signal is bad, I switch to WiFi when home to avoid unnecessary battery drain.

What is this obsession for battery life, it lasts me well through the day with moderate/heavy use. I charge it at night (if needed) and unless you are homeleless this shouldn`t be a problem. It`s a great phone and i enjoy using it.

I thought the same until my N4 actually arrived, it seems battery life is abysmal compared to my Optimus 2x which didnt have anything really spectacular in regards to battery size. On my O2x I could get 1.5 - 2.5 days depending on use, hitting atleast 1 .5 which was good and acceptable for me (I can charge at night anyways) however my N4 doesnt even reach 13 hours on similar usage!.
I am quite a light users of smartphones however I do like to have a power phone when it comes to using it on the basis of smoothness and capabilities if I need to say do work on my phone, I rarely play games though. Main usage is 2 email accounts on poll 1 hour steps, a third account that is an exchange server and polls in 30 minute steps and thats about it with some brief browsing and a handful of texts (been a quite time since I got my N4), this is less usage than my O2x and yet it still performs alot worse!
I was hoping of staying with stock as I was expecting it to finally be good, comparing it to LG stock attempts it is but battery life isnt . I will be trying the combo Vangelis13 mentioned, raspbean and matr1x kernel as that seems like a great mix however Parandroid has been on the table and it seems like alot of being are getting good results so I will try it soon .
If I can get more than a day of usage I would be really happy, if I was playing games or doing really heavy tasks I wouldnt expect it to last but right now it is doing pretty much nothing and dieing far to fast!.

One thing I've noticed since coming to N4 from S2 is that phone calls drain battery much more significantly on the N4. I could make an hour long call on my S2 and it would use no more than a couple of percent battery but the N4 used 15% for an hour long phone call the other night.

If I didn't own a nexus 4 and came to this thread to find out about it's battery life I would expect it to be good.
Point is you guys are misinforming everyone. The battery is mediocre and that's it.
It won't last a full day if you use it constantly and I do need two charges / day many times.
Let me put it this way, you will only get roughly 3 hours of screen time on stock everything. If that is good for you then it's will have good battery life, if not then you will say it's got poor battery life.

you are perfectly right.
I come from an iPhone 4s, which I changed because the battery life wasn´t that great and I thought it was time to try something new.
Got the N4 last friday and played around with it during the weekend.
Monday, tuesday and wednesday this week... none of these days I´ve been able to come back home with the phone still on.
I wake up at 7.30am and I usually am back home at 6pm.
In my opinion, and honestly should be in everyone´s opinion, 10 hours of battery life are unacceptable, whatever the usage is (considering that 7.30 of those 10 hours I was at work)
I have till friday this week to return it, which is a pity because the phone is great

i get 5-6 hours sot..
rom is omnirom 5.1.1 hellscore kernel b73.
100mv undervoltage hellsactive governer.
think 7 would be possible if google services would not take a quarter of the battery.
the screen is not taking that much battery as one would think.
think most issues with battery life come from fake original battery replacements.
had 3-4 sot using "original" battery. but after replacing with real genuine from official lg spare parts shop 5-6...

Gawdang battery, lasted too long!
So my first android was the nexus one, then the galaxy s, then the nexus S. I am used to the "fantastic" battery life of android phones. So yesterday I was deciding on whether to get the galaxy nexus to continue the tradition, but decided to get the note instead.
I want to do the right thing and that is to do a full charge and full discharge on the first few rounds of battery life but it took AGES for it to discharge fully. I am so pleased with this, I now have better battery life than my wife's iphone.
******** If you see the battery chart, I could not resist playing with the phone so did a little charge there. I am also trying to avoid root as long as possible, after the so call "stock vanilla" experience, its nice to have toggles on the notification without jumping through loops
Wow. 6 hours. That's impressive

And that is on stock. I wonder if I flash a custom kernel, would I be able to get better? Overall very happy. On my second trip of full term charge to empty.

I got my Note on Thursday morning. I didn't have time to set it up until Friday evening. I fully charged the battery first. I've got gmail and twitter syncing, and bluetooth and wifi on. I've made a few calls and showed it off to my family on Christmas Eve. It hasn't been heavy use by any stretch, but I have yet to recharge the battery - it's at 33% right now with screen on time of just over three hours. I'm pretty satisfied so far.

You see from the screenshot that he was charging for a while.
So I don't understand this thread. How can you know how long battery last for if you part charge it?
Not much to understand, my friend. This thread was not made to prove anything, just to show I am real happy with my phone. You are completely right, I did charge it in the middle, I was transfering songs and movies out from the computer and forgot to take it off the usb.
I am now on the second from full to zero. Lets see how much screen time I can get, but already its a winner for me. 77% with 10h on battery and 1h 39m screen time.
Happy holidays all.

Congrats on your new purchases, may you have much joy with it, like I do mine.
i got the note a few days ago and im very pleased with the battery usage. right now on normal usage im on 48 hours of on time, with 40% battery left. display is the biggest usage of course, and has been on 2.5 hours. ive done lots of installing via wifi and playing with new apps and running games, and a few calls, etc. my old galaxy s would get 48 hours only with very minimal usage and nowhere near 2.5 hours of the display on.
So I am now on my 2nd discharge or 3rd and I rooted it, so there was a whole lot of plugging in and adb and stuff, but I think on a real discharge I can get away with about 4 hours screen time, that is stretching it i think but, generally still very very happy with it. Compared to the nexus S and the galaxy s before, this is heaven for me. I still maintain its better than the wife's 4S
Wow. It sounds like a lot of us with battery problems might still have half full batteries falsely claiming to be empty. Aside from turning off the heater function, this might be the next big explaination of "poor battery"

Great battery life! Is it normal?

So I've been using this phone since 5am (its almost 2pm now), making and receiving phone calls for the last 3 hours, using the internet while in calls (some people are boring to talk to), playing games, and listening to music off and on for a while, and I'm at 74%.
Now, to some people who really tweak their phones, this probably doesn't mean anything to them. However, I have had an Evo 3D, Droid Razr OG, and Galaxy Nexus, all of which I completely tweaked, and wasn't getting this battery life. I am rooted with a stock rom, but my hatred for TouchWiz forced me to use Apex Launcher. Other than that, no modifications at all, no flashed kernels, nothing.
I've only had this phone for a little over 24hrs, so I'm wondering, with all the reviews complaining about battery life, and even threads in various forums with users complaining about battery life, is this normal? Is the battery life great at the beginning then gradually gets worse? Or is it truly dependent on the use I give it? I'm in an HSPA+ zone at my house, but I have LTE when I actually go into town. Any ideas?
It seems like there is some debate on whether there are some people getting "good batteries" and some people getting "bad batteries". I know that my wife and I are both seeing what I'd call phenomenal battery life, and that's with no root, just disabling a few apps, and we're leaving everything except Bluetooth on all the time (and making sure it's not trying to find an LTE signal, since there is none here)... so clearly we got "good" batteries. I also ensure we don't have any rogue apps, or things running in the background that we don't really want there, but that's the extent of "tweaking" I've done. But, like I said, there's definitely reports of people seeing bad battery life, so not sure what the deal is.
that's not normal...I took mine off the charger at 7 a.m., used it for about 45 minutes worth of phone calls and by 11:30 I was down to under 70%.
My battery life sucks. No where near that. My phone has been unplugged for 2.5 hours and I'm down to 60. That sucks.
I only got into this phone because of the battery life. I may switch out. I'm not getting anywhere near the advertised life

Thanks for rubbing it in. I'm lucky to get 16hrs or moderate usage. I saw on amazon there's a three pack of batteries. Maybe I'll try those and get lucky

So based on what you said, in 9 hours you used 26% of the battery. This would mean that the 2100mAh battery was sustained at an average of 61mA over the course of your usage. This seems almost impossible considering what type of use you put the phone through, Unless you phone is idling at under 20mA (mine is around 30-50) your battery stats might be inaccurate. If you continue using your battery at this rate and usage it should last you 34-35 hours with what looks like heavy use. You can use battery monitor widget from the play store to view your current usage and see what type of power your phone is actually consuming, as it is directly related to your battery life.

Your argument is completely valid which is why I posted this thread to begin with. I wiped battery stats and all that, so it might be giving me an inaccurate reading as I pretty much never let my phones die, although I read in some places that wiping battery stats makes no difference at all and is basically useless. I'll download the app and let it run and I'll post back. I did post a screenshot with the time I was on battery and the battery percentage that was left, but as mentioned before, since most of the actual usage was phone calls, I didn't have the screen on that much.
I've had mine for about two weeks and I consider my usage to be medium-high a lot of the time. I can't complain with these results. I'm completely stock, no root, no apps disabled.
As far as Chrome, I don't know what it does but I've read in other threads that it does drain battery.

I kept seeing Chrome use CPU even when I had all the tabs closed. Quick internet search revealed several threads about it draining battery so I decided to uninstall it until it gets out of beta.
However, my battery drained dead over night again. I did hear my notification go off prior to bed. I am now thinking the led is killing my battery so I turned off just now for notifications.

If people are having very bad battery issues it's due to how the phone is set up and syncing. Sure there are the super rare cases where the phone is actually broken in some way.
S3 has the best battery life stock behind the razr maxx on Vzw at least.

Nexus 4 Average Battery Life - How many hours you get out of your phone?
So far getting 13 hours with medium brightness.
Its not the total on time that really counts, it is the screen on time. And go to the great battery impression thread in the general forum!
Just finished getting 1d11hrs from it... I had run it down to 1% and fully meant to take screenshots when the phone shut down on me I had done "average" use as I use a phone... watched a little bit of an hd movie, facebook, a few calls, playing on google play and other stuff.
I'm coming from a Samsung Infuse and this is about on par with the battery life I was getting from that running CM10 unofficial on it when the ROM didn't have drain problems affecting it.
I don't know if this isn't typical of others' experience with the N4... I was cautious and plugged my baby in when I got it before even turning it on and let it charge up. It did have to do some calibration as with power off it thought it was at 100% but when it booted up, it registered 80% charge. Now after a few full drain/charge cycles it seems to have a very good feeling for 100% and 0%.

That's where you know it is software related. 4.2 has some bugs, the galaxy nexus got updated to 4.2 and people are reporting really bad battery life ever since the update. Also JB in general doesn't perform as good as ICS in the battery department cause of project butter that cranks the CPU up soon as you start using the phone. Example is Galaxy s 3.
Personally i get very good battery life and in very satisfied. When i was on stock my battery started really bad but then improved, now that I'm rooted and running a custom ROM and kernel i have very satisfying battery life.

To all those with lousy battery times!

I have a year old Note and have been getting progressively lower battery times, I have tried every possible trick and several ROMS. Recently was getting as low as 12hrs. I have had a cheap replacement battery (non Samsung) which was not used often. Recently when I used it I noticed about the same battery life as the original. I purchased a new Samsung battery and now I am getting over 40hrs on one charge with moderate use and sync on with no other changes.
My messge is : change your battery at least every 8-10 months, you will be astonished as I was. One of the great features of the Note is the ease of change of battery, use it!
Yep same for new battery and it's like I have a new phone. Without changing anything my screen on time almost double.

I've been doing that for over a decade now but this time i bight a hyperion aftermarket.
I bought two actually. I keep one in my car. This way I'm guaranteed a full day's worth of heavy usage.
Also got the dock + second battery charger.
I'll never get a mobile without the ability to replace the battery.

Non removable battery is a deal breaker - your phone will be useless after 12-24 months depending on the charge cycle.

i don't have the time to order a new battery online or look for it in stores so simply i swap out the kernel for the rom i'm using and with the current one i get about 20hrs which isn't much compared to when i got it a couple months ago and worse yet if you have on hsdpa+ whole day battery life drops to about 2/3
After one year (for me ten months) the note 1 needs a new battery. Decreasing bat life, random restarts, and screen flickering are all indicators. I thought i had runaway process issue or hardware problem. But i finally ordered an ankor battery from Amazon and my unit is fine andback to 20hrs.
I thought this was settled back in Nov.
Now just waiting for my jb!

Do not buy a spare the time time as the phone if you are not going to use it until the original goes as it will deteriorate from the day it's made, even with out use.
From box 13......
I don't know if this is still necessary nowadays, but I always use the battery till it's about to turn off the phone. My batteries always have a pretty good lifetime, so I imagine that helps.

My 10 month old stock battery is still giving me much more on screen time with wifi. This is reduced to half. I used to get 10-12 hours on screen time when i got it out of the box.

In his dreams I have 2,5 hours screen on time with autobrightness. That was much better on gingerbread days. Maybe leaked Jb versions are not well optimized. We will see after official update. I think I will buy an original battery too.

This is a common misconception that if you leave the battery to almost deplete every time it will be better for it in he long run. I have done a lot of research on this topic for laptops and smartphones. Essentially they use the same type of battery technology which does not suffer from memory effect, but if you stress the battery a lot (letting it deplete before you charge it again or almost deplete below 5%) than it will damage it more quickly.
The optimal way of charging your battery is:
1) After the first cycles just charge it whenever you want (even it is at 70% and you are at work, you can plug it to get another 10% and then unplug and use)
2) Don't let it deplete, it will stress the battery too much and damage it in the long run
3) Every 30 cycles, you can let it discharge to below 5% and let it recharge until 100%
I have done this on my PC which still has its battery at above 80% after almost 3 years, and to some extent on my Note, but as I can't always foresee how things will play out I sometimes need to use to until the last drop of energy .
Hope this info helps.
10-12 hours with stock rom and stock battery. Now it has dropped to 7-8 hours. With no replacement. I will be getting another battery soon.
In his dreams what dou you mean?? I posted my current battery status.

Wonderful.
You are getting 7-8 hours of 'screen on time' with a one year old degraded battery. When you get a new one; lemme know, I would like you buy the old one of yours.

That is definitely battery drain. Better post a screen of the battery your apps are using...
With a brand new battery, you cannot achieve much more than 5 hours of screen on time with general usage.
You can indeed get much more than that when watching video, but that is the only scenario where that is possible (or maybe staring at a black picture for hours).
So people saying that they get 10 to 12 hours of screen on time are really getting 10 to 12 hours of uptime, meaning the phone is turned on but is sleeping most of the time, with maybe 2 to 3 hours of screen on time.
That's lousy battery life, and those people should buy a new battery.

Official Battery Life Thread

so maybe I'm blind, but i didn't see a battery life thread yet. post some shots with screen on time and how much time off charger!
right now mine is pretty terrible since it's less than 24 hours since I got it.. but i do hope it gets better, because it seems my g2 had better battery life right off the bat, but I'm sure this thing just has to settle in after a few charge cycles!!

For me, battery life suddenly doesn't matter as much, when it can charge so fast..
I'm in the same boat as OP. Think a few cycles will show how great this battery really is.
Same here. I'm on day 2, so I'm hoping it does improve.
battery life is pretty decent for me. Power using gets me through a day link to my moto 360 via bluetooth and on wifi about 50% of the time.
I've been listening to Poweramp since eight this morning. A little surfing, and I'm at 73%. I expect it might be a bit better once the battery has gone through a couple of charge cycles.
One thing I learned, was download booster is a huge battery hog! If you turn it on, it'll take days to charge to 100%.
I know the note is doing better than my old s3 though, because doing my same run using both my tracks and S health, rocket player, and taking panorama pics, I still used 10% less battery than my s3 did only running my tracks and rocket player.
Me trying to drain it. Amazing in my opinion
How do you post pics. I'm using the tapatalk app and it says my screenshot filesize is too large
My phone is randomly heating up, not sure why..only using facebook on wifi...1 day old..

yeah, but i disabled fast charging because i thought i read somewhere that using fast charge could degrade the life of the battery over time..yea yea i know, batteries are cheap, but still. idk. plus you always have to have the samsung fast charger with you, which i obviously don't do. but "slow" charging still charges fast enough for me lol
either way the battery is pretty bad for me on day 2. i've disabled A LOT of bloat though, so who knows. wish we had root; i'd use greenify like i used to on the G2...

i had same thing and i noticed that i had several email accounts setup, but when i go to each inbox, they were empty and the device was constantly trying to sync, but nothing would push both ways, and therefore after a few hours phone got real hot. battery was draining like 10 percent every 15 mins.
after some testing, i found out that if you go into email advanced options, disable group as email conversatinos, and that fixed all my stuff, battery is great
Eh, I don't even have other emails setup besides my Gmail app...

First cycle results not too bad if you ask me. Fully charged it yesterday when I got it and took it off the charger when charging was complete been off the charger ever since... I've been trying to kill it by playing games Web browsing YouTube phone calls and it still going strong...
Almost 12 hours or moderate use and the battery usage was 90%. To me coming from the Note 2 this is not an improvement. Anyone coming from a Note3 with any other thoughts.
This is my results coming from a 100% battery charge.
idk how the hell you guys are getting like 5 hour screen on time. how quick do you drop from 100 to 99 after you unplug from charger? mines pretty quick. it's annoying. the g2 would stick on 100 percent for 20 minutes of screen on time and an hour off charger. this phone is at 90 by then. ridiculous. maybe I'm just spoiled by the g2s amazing battery life.
right now I'm at 12 percent left, with 14 hours 45 minute off charger and 3 hour 26 minutes screen on time. android system is my humber one battery user.. not even screen. the hell?

I say give it a few more days in order to better judge the battery. For the G3, the first few days had terrible battery life. The battery would last less than 20hrs and about 3hrs screen time. I was getting ready to dump it, but soon the battery life picked up. Now I always get over 24hrs with at least 4.5hrs screen time. Obviously two different devices from different manufacturers, but the point is to not be quick to judge it. My Note 4 will probably be arriving early next week.

yeah i hear you. if i recall, my g2 wasn't great at start either... but i cant really remember. anyway here was my final stats for today. it's on the charger now for a bit before bed.
my android system is higher than the screen on which is weird... never had that before on a phone.
