I've totally bricked my Essential: no A/B partitions?

After a nice long session of getting my phone to root and installing my first custom ROM, I was sad to see after booting successfully, there was no touch.
I thought, "oh well" and tried to flash back to stock. This is where I think I made a critical error. I tried flashing the stock OTA, Fastboot files, and the BACK_TO_STOCK files from the XDA thread. Nothing worked and I tried to change my slot, only to get the message "Fastboot: error: Device does not support slots." Additionally, when I try to flash-all from the fastboot files, it tells me i basically have no partitions. I do still have twrp though so all is not lost and I can boot into the bootloader.

lol, your not totally bricked, sounds like you have a fastboot driver thats old

I had this problem too when I was trying to get TWRP + Magisk + EX kernel working.
I found that my Essential phone is pretty picky with what commands it accepts. Maybe this is due to a silent bootloader update, maybe not. A lot of commands work only if you spam them.
What Fastboot do you have?

I'm having the same issue as the OP so I grabbed the latest driver from essential (I was using an older release) but it hasn't made a difference.
Is there a known way to verify the partition structure on this device? For both slots

You want to use the driver included in essential windows driver.exe on their website. The Google ones are a little goofy.
Can you do *fastboot --version* (that's minus minus version) and send the output?

Also try a different USB cable from the one that came with the phone, if you were using that one. Mine doesn't respond properly with that one, but a USB-A to USB-C cable from Anker that I bought works fine.

Yep, here is the version info. With some of the errors I was getting trying to flash it I grabbed the latest from Google

Yeah I have it installed. It was the cable! For real I would have thought the Samsung GS9 OEM cable would be high quality enough.

That seems to be a normal thing with Essential devices to be honest, I've had 2 and both have been lets say slow and picky at accepting some ADB/Fastboot commands. On the OPENAM variant it was even more of a problem (no idea why), but the white OPENUS replacement I have now hasn't been too much of an issue. I've not had to specify everytime I'm in Fastboot which slot I want to flash to specifically, for example...
At least its not like we have plenty of Pie ROMs to flash over and over, so ultimately its not that much of an issue.

It just gets corrupted easily. I found formatting fixes it.either with twrp, or the verity disabler by zackptg.then flash the whole current stock firmware and start over. They got some issues internally with easy corruption it seems

Actually in my case it was just the cable. Using the known good cable that command will work every single time as well as any others I try. Mine is a white SPRINT variant.

Hey recently I was trying things with the recovery and updates, and well i didn't remember what i did. The problem is that my phone keep on bootloop
i tried:
flashing via MiFlash with Fastboot
via twrp flasheable zips
manual commands for Fastboot
flash_all in the tissot rom for Fastboot
i also tried the dowload mode
Once i got install some version but that version wasbugged the sim card din't work and rebooted the phone when the sim card pin menu show up
i think my computer has problems with the ports or something because (i think) the drivers are installed
I only want stock rom again (( i would try anything you say me

to unlock bootloader, enter to fastboot (power and vol -) then connectto pc and with adb/fastboot commands open cmd and do fastboot oem unlock

Try with fastboot set_active b
Then use fastboot reboot and while pressing Enter, keep VOL UP pressed until you see a triangle with "No command" string.
So keep pressed Power button and in the same time click once on VOL UP. When you see "Android Recovery", release the power button.
With volume buttons go to "Wipe data/factory reset" and press Power, and confirm the wipe (it will delete everything from your phone).
Then click on reboot system now and see if it's ok.

i locked the bootloader because some post i saw said "lock and unlock the bootloader" and well... so now i'm ultra-stucked

i can't get into the download mode :/ and yes i tried to flash the zip of the pie update, algo tried to flash pixel experience and nothing (all these with the twrp recovery, this morning)

I installed magisk a week ago to instal gcam and now i wanted to uninstall magisk in order to remove root and get the ota, now after uninstalling magisk from magisk manager the phone turned off and it's booting on a screen that says "no command", in the magisk consolo when i uninstalled it it sayed something like "!boot image unavailable" or something similar before completing the uninstallation, pleas please help me i'm scared.
pd: i don't know if it is relevant but i installed android p by vpn method a two weeks ago.

Which rom did you use?
Oreo or Pie?

Next time uninstall magisk via twrp, i did that mistake too

No, it's wrong, search on xda how to downgrade to 9.0 to 8.1, if you flash directly oreo it will brick your phone, i bricked it too.

i'm actually trying to flash it with the phone in fastboot mode, should i do it with the no command? i mean it says success but it takes only 1s to flash so i assume it's not actually flashing anything. anyway if i restart the phone normally it does still show the no command screen.
ps the save user data is cheked.

Please try this command (move on fastboot.exe folder, right click on an empty space of the folder, open command or PowerShell)
./fastboot getvar all
And post here the result

Hello experts,
My phone was rooted and bootloader unlocked. As I saw that android pie is available by OTA, I wanted to lock my phone in order to receive update (by OTA). So for that, I use command (fastboot oem lock). My MI A1 is now locked but i can't boot on it.
I guess the option 'OEM Unlock' is not ticked, that's why I can't install or flash any rom with Miflash.
I have message error : "failed (remote: oem unlock is not allowed)"
I tried a lot of advices found on different forums but none of them works.
If you have any idea how to unlock my bootlader, you are welcome.

Why you locked bootloader? Never lock a bootloader when phone is rooted (e.g. runs a custom boot image!)
You can install OTA updates also with unlocked bootloader, but you must unroot it first flashing the original boot image.
So you didn't update to Pie at the end, correct?
Please post the result of "fastboot getvar all"

[HELP] Bricked MI A1 with locked bootloader

I have a Mi A1 which has never been linked to any Mi Account and is currently in locked bootloader status. :crying:
Two days back I got my device suddenly restarted and since then it stuck at the bootscreen which is never came alive until the moment I am writing.
First I tried with factory reset with the recovery, but it does not work and displays a message of
" Supported API: 3
E: Failed to clear BCB message: failed to fsync /dev/block/bootdevice/by-name/misc: operation not permitted"
As of it, I tried to flash it with Mi flash tool and unfortunately it didn’t went through as the bootloader is locked. So I tried to unlock it via unlocker tool but it also do not work. It says couldn't unlock: can't get info.
And also I tried with EDL mode with testpoints and Fastboot mode. In EDL mode it detects and successfully completes the flash. but the mobile still stuck at boot screen.

At the moment neither factory reset, unlocking bootloader nor flashing through MiFlash seems to be reliable options. Can someone explain me what is wrong with this device?

In Xiaomi devices with Android One you don't need to bind your Mi account, this means that you can unlock device even in a brick state always that your device can boot to fastboot.
I think that your device is trying to boot to a wrong slot or some partition on your current working slot is bad.
To know if it's the first option probably you need to update your SDK Platform Tools https://developer.android.com/studio/releases/platform-tools
- Then see which partition actually your are on by typing

fastboot getvar current-slot
.
- If you for example are on a slot then set b as active with
Code:
fastboot --set-active=b
and now try to boot again.
- If it doesn't result try to unlock bootloader through fastboot, from there you can flash anything what you want and later flash stock ROM maybe.

Thanks but I’d tried everything you’d suggested.
Changed partition, tried to unlock the boot loader with adb and the mi unlock tool. Changed slot from a
b and back again.
I’ve ordered an EDL cable but it will take a few weeks to get here as I couldn’t find a UK stockist. In the mean time I ordered a note 8T. If I can get the Mi up and running again I’ll pass it to a family member.

Hi bro i've been a couple hours now trying to revive my phone i'm on your same situation and it's so sad
i've watched this video (can't paste the link because im a new user but search "Unbrick or Repair any Xiaomi Device (Locked Bootloader) by the channel called "Eeshwar Prasath" )

Hi, i have the same problem and tried all the stuff that are mentioned. I've just tried this tutorial and it doesn't work, my phone reboots after i open the edl file and keeps locked . My phone is Mi A1

Did you try to unlock bootloader through fastboot? Can you enter to recovery? What about formatting data through stock recovery? Depending in what caused the issue this can leave your device booted again.
