Greeting!
Shortly before properly rooted my phone with magisk and tried to access via a decent file manager app to edit contents of magisk config file; when i reach the config file and try to change it I'm getting crash.
I tried to change that folder from several different terminal and it says "permission denied".
The question is how to change content of the configuration file and gain permission without using computers?
Configuration file located in /dev/wKvw6/.magisk
(also, the directory (bolded) above has been changing everytime i root my phone, is that new thing or it was happening)

Anyone else having this issue?
I have Root Explorer purchased and installed. I am trying to remove/rename the start up/start down sounds. It appears that root explorer is in r/w mode for the folder I am in (Sytem/etc) if I delete the file, it shows "file deleted succesfully". I refresh and it is still there. If I try and copy my new file from the internal sd, it says "file copied succesfully" but it does not show up. I have also tried renaming PowerOn.wav to PowerOn.wav.bak and it takes but I cannot rename it to PowerOn.wav. Then if I verify things with Linda file manager, it shows the file still named PowerOn.wav.bak. How come it's not letting me change the files? Also, hitting the button "Mount R/O" does nothing, it always says the same thing, it never changes to "Mount R/W".
I keep hearing people say it works for them but it's not working for me. I am using stock rooted firmware.
works perfect for me with root explorer... I renamed the original to "orig_PowerOn.wav" and then copy the one I wanted into the folder and named it "PowerOn.wav" (no quotes of course)
Well ****! now it's working. ????
Working well for me. I didn't delete default sounds, i moved them to backup on SD.
This same exact issue happened to me 3 nights ago while changing my shutdown animation. I had to re-boot my phone a few times before Root Explorer worked properly.
I recently installed Cm7.1 on my Nook Color, does this give me root access? The reason i ask this is because i was attempting to access my build.prop to try to get some games to work but i can not seem to be able to access it via Astro File Manager. Also on a side note, every time i install an app and do not have my sd card in my Nook i am prompted to do so instead of using my internal memory?

CM7 is a rooted ROM. The file access model is setup to make sure you know what you're doing to prevent you from modifying or deleting a file that is essential to the system even though the ROM itself is rooted. I don't use Astro so I don't know how to get root access for that app. File managers like File Expert (free) or Root Explorer (cheap) will allow you to access the root and system files, but you may have to enable the capability in a setup option. In addition, you will have to set the directory to read/write from read-only to actually modify a file.
Thanks for the info, thought i did something wrong when i was installing cm7

If you use ES File Explorer (recommended) then it has a setting to make the system directory read / write. You can then just long touch the file, open it using the built in text editor and save it.
Yup i did that, checked both boxes under root settings but i am unable to navigate out of the sd card
es file explorer
To get out of SD card, go into settings and change home to / instead of /mnt/sdcard next time you open it will start in base directory
Hello all. I have an S 4 Active by AT&T. It has been rooted by GeoHot's URL. I then installed SU and ES File Explorer. I'm trying to figure out a way to get Tethering to work. One of the suggestions was to pull a custom TetherProvisioning file from a guy from YouTube whose name escapes me at the moment. Then, change permissions on the file, go to settings, then turn it on, get the temp warning, then you're good.
The problem is that I'm unable to change permissions on the file. I've verified the phone is rooted, but not sure what step(s) I might be missing. I went into ES File Explorer's menu and changed the file system to rw instead of ro, but not getting very far. Tried using ES and SU and no joy.
Any/all help would be extremely appreciated.
You have to change the permissions on the specific apk I assume you installed. I have root explorer, not es file, and I just long press the apk and a menu comes up where I can change the permissions.
I am on 4.4.2 20d...i have root and yesterday when I tried to copy one file using root explorer...it shows read only...and there was no option to change to read write...
Then i installed super manager...i got success in copying...but there was no option to set permission to rw-r-r.
So please suggest a way to set permissions in root...any app or way of setting it.
I was frustrated as i haven't set permission to the file i have copied.

to changes permissions , you nedd root, and SUPER SU.
If you are root install it from play store.
Then, when you are on root explorer and try to move or edit something from system you´ll be prompted if you bring supersu to root explorer. You must accept.
For the permissions, select a file and keep it pressed a few segs. It will show you a menu, then you have permissions
How do I put I file in root and make it stick? I'm trying to create a file /data/system/device_owner.xml. Using Solid Expolorer, I create the file and set permissions to 600, but after I reboot the file still disappears. Same if I drop the file in using TWRP.

I just checked how it works for me and have no such problems:
- I placed a file into the same location with Root explorer
- after reboot the file was still in there.
So on my set up (see signature) I can't reproduce your issue.
