My AllWinner T3L Head unit setup - Android Head-Units

Hi All,
I decided to post my experience with chinese head units that are available in aftermarket sellers in India.
these are normally rebranded by the seller and I decided to buy one from a prominent aftermarket brand.
I decided to buy a 2GB RAM 8GB storage unit with Android Auto and Car Play support.
Till this point I had no experience with these head units and had seen few in cabs so far.
The moment I installed them and started using them, the first reaction was I have wasted a good sum of money. the performance is just horrible, the things are not seamless and GPS and Maps are just too slow.
But soon enough my tinkering abilities kicked in and a lot of research on xda and 4pda got me good inputs to start tinkering around the Device.
I have not finally settled on my setup of the device and the performance is good enough for day to day use.
Here is what it looks like now
Device:
AllWinner T3L 2GB 8GB
Firmware:
V8.1.1_20220823.094651_THEME1
Rooted: Yes with Magisk 25.2
Softwares:
Google Maps
Youtube Music Premium with offline support
Magisk + Modules
DPI Changer: i changed from default DPI 160 to around 210 which gives me larger menus and fonts and display. to operate in car you need bigger buttons obviously
KTweak: for performance tweaks

Features

Analog TV and its extendable antenna.
Front AUX input.
Two front Micro SD slot.
Reverse camera input.
A single bluetooth module dedicated to phone calls (Along with a dialer app). Inaccessible from Android system.
Since it's still at Android version 4.1.1, some application that requires API beyond level 16 cannot be installed.
Installed apps
Code:
Google Maps 6.14.1 Google Play Store
Google Play Music Google Play Store
Nova Launcher Google Play Store
AutoMate - Car Dashboard Sideload (Google Play Store says it's incompatible with the device)
Quirks
Hardware
Only 4 hardware buttons; Eject disc, Mute/Power, Volume Up, and Volume Down.
Hardware buttons are hard to press and made a loud clicky noise.
The external storage cover fell easily.
The bezel surrounding the screen protrudes too far which made navigation around the screen's edge difficult.
Too slow to even load Google Play Music's cover art properly (Blank grey boxes).
Software
Lags, even when doing simple activities e.g. volume change and notification bar swipe.
Applications that requested immersive mode can't go back since the Home-Menu-Back buttons are presented as softkey only. Swiping from the top does nothing.
Radio app opens automatically at every boot (Cold and standby). Undesirable as I have Automate running at startup.
Brightness level reset itself to max level at every boot (Cold and standby).
Google Maps Navigation still uses the old 2D UI due to the API limitation.
The unit's rootable using KingRoot with a bit of a glitch. The app states that the process failed; but at the next reboot, root is present.
The home screen are slow, unintuitive, and full of system-crawling animations. Fortunately, there's Nova Launcher.
I'll fix the post's formatting and write more information as I go, but so far I'm not yet impressed and considering getting another unit. But for now I would very much appreciate any input however trivial from XDA.
Thank you and sorry for any spelling/grammar mistakes.
Update : For future references :
Android version 4.3 (Jelly Bean MR2, API 18) is the bare minimum for a head unit as Google Maps Navigation with the latest UI requires it.
Knob volume buttons are so much easier and safer to use on a car head unit.
I'd hate to get off topic; including on my own thread, but I don't want to clutter the subforum so here goes.
Can anyone tell me the differences between Joying unit model number JY-UL124 and JY-UL135? Spec wise I can see no difference. Are both of them MTCD? Both has :

RAM Capacity 1 GB
Internal storage 16 GB
Version Android 5.1.1
Screen size 7"
Thank you.

Recovery and rom
Hi and thanks for your correct observations and info about this device.
Me too I found the same limitations, but before to change it I would try to change the rom. My questions are:
1) what is the exact botton sequence to enter into recovery mode? (I found it long time ago, but I don't remember anymore).
2) Do someone know a rom that I could add to the device to try to remove the limitation indicated below? "Malaysak" rom or CM rom?
Thanks to anyone that could help me..
Bye

It is worth mentioning that in this release, if we toggle the root ON, we can freely modify the system partition! No need for any custom files!
Does "Pokemon Go" app works with this version?
good update but remix os is still far superior.
@slybunda At what? I can also say my bike is superior without listing it's pros.
more stable and better 3d support
It all comes down to specific hardware @slybunda . On my devices Phoenix is more stable and has more features at the same time plus a better design. I personally don't care about 3D acceleration - android-x86 would be enough for games because those are usually ran in fullscreen, so no desktop UI needed.

I love your rom so much @Regnas I updated a port that already existed for the vzw gs4 just so I could keep using it for my own personal use. It's the best rom ever, 10,000xlove. Sorry that's a little off topic because it's not really the same rom. This is just the first post I've seen from you and had to shoutout some love
@tdct12 do have in mind that this is an official release by Chaozuo @Regnas does deserve the love for publishing it though

Has anyone had any luck booting this from USB? I have tried from USB and SD, but have had no luck. I was able to dual boot from my SSD drive, but it seemed to make my Win 10 OS lag a lot. I ran the installer and selected install to U, and let it install. I do have bios setup to boot from USB first and even tried it through the boot menu. It almost seems like the drive is not bootable though. Any ideas or thoughts?
Verification failed error 15. Any work around?

Android Headunits - UI comparison thread

I'd like to start this thread hoping that as many of you as possible will chip in with useful info. I personally researched a lot before buying a HU, especially interested in how the default UI looks like, launcher, radio app, music app, EQ app, settings, etc... Got some useful info from different sellers, re-sellers, Chinese support staff, etc, but nothing compares to a real community, and i wished this info would have been available in a single thread...
My reasons were various: noticed some HU have subwoofer controls in EQ app, some not. Waze looks different (text scaling) on identical sized displays...Some radio apps displayed RDS text, some not... Some launchers and apps look simply horrible, some almost OEM-like...you get the idea Until we can claim that all HUs can be rooted and custom FWs can be installed, many of us will be stuck with whatever you get out of the box.
So i'll start.
To keep things somewhat organised, please post following info besides UI screenshots:
- Make/model
- Source of purchase (which online store)
- HW specs (RAM, ROM, display size, CPU info, etc.)
- SW specs (Android version, MCU, etc.)
- UI images (DEFAULT radio app, media app, eq app, bluetooth app, settings menu, about screen, launcher, etc..)
One more thing: there's many versions of the same thing running around under different store names, etc. If you have a HU that's similar to whatever's been posted here, just link to an existing post. Create new reply only if there's different UI elements or FW features, etc. Thx!

@zerozoneice - I see you have prints for two devices. What would be the main differences between them? How is the audio quality? I am thinking of buying the second one(cheaper) for my MK5 Golf to replace the standard stereo.

some differences are:
- screen size (advantage 9")
- settings customizations (advantage 8")
- possibility to set standby time when ACC is OFF (10min, 20, 30, 1h, 2h) - advantage 8"
- proper voice-over-navi implementation in the 8" (music volume fades but doesn't stop, navi notifications play, music volume goes back up) - advantage 8"
- audio quality is the same
- big advantage of 9" is that it has subwoofer control (volume/gain, frequency cutoff), whereas the 8" has only a "bass" slider and you need to globally adjust the woofer volume (gain) from the amp itself in the trunk
- working display brightness better in 8" than in the 9"
- better looking radio APK in the 8", but both display RDS info.
as you can see the 8" has more advantages, but somehow i'm running the 9" one now they're both good....
the perfect unit would be the FW of the 8" combined with the screen and UI of the 9"...go figure..

A couple of questions:
1. Can you run Android Auto as a standalone apk/launcher on this unit?
2. Did you try connecting a front dashcam to the Composite video input?
I wonder if the 6.0.1 FW will work with other T3 units. I spoke to my seller’s tech support, he claims that the factory hasn’t deemed Android 6 stable and ready for public use yet.

3. dupdate.img might work across T3 devices, but don't touch MCU update, it has to be exclusively from your vendor

What's the firmware update procedure?
I tried @velvetpig's instruction but fails for my 'Topway?' unit. Neither the System Update menu under the MCU Update in Settings work.

yea because that's a different platform (R16)
for T3 i think you can try this method HERE

Joying- Software tweaks

Looking for maximum speed without hardware modification (no heatsinks etc).
Using GTX Rom on intel sofia unit.
I use a combination of spotify, waze, google maps, and pocket casts. Just these four apps. Are there specific versions of these apps that work best for Android 6.0?
Does nova launcher significantly slowdown the unit?
Does titianium backup slowdown the unit? Does freezing any additional processes through TB help?
I did search the forum for these specific questions, thanks for the help guys.

There can be differences in Launcher speeds themselves in how they start apps, do screen animations (opening/closing windows, swipes), but once in the background with a running app in the foreground it doesn't make a difference at all, as the launcher just "sits" there. Only the memory footprint can have influence as a micro launcher of 50-250Kb will not take as much memory as Nova up to quite some MBs: 100 ~350 MB, depending on running services, features, etc. And these services can take slightly more cpu, but nothing to worry about.
Same for Titanium. A small portion remains in memory and just sits there waiting for the next scheduled backup (and only if you have that scheduled backup).
The GTX-Rom is already pretty optimized. There is not much too be gained. Simply do not use animated (3D) wallpapers. Even those do not take much resources, but if you want to use every % of the CPU/memory efficient, you should not enable them.
Note also that most apps have more then enough memory in the 2GB memory space on 6.0.1. And having quad-core/8-core CPU's will spread the load. It is not like in the "old days" with single core/dual core cpu's and a more primitive task manager on older Androids.

not sure what to do with a avh-4200 nex pioneer

I have a OnePlus 7 pro rooted and I like using Android auto with that headunit avh 4200 nex and I just updated to aa 4.5.592854 and I didn't get the new aa design so I played around with a preference editor looking for things about the new layout and u found 2 that I tried editing and I still didn't get it to show me the new layout. Is there anything else I can do to try and get the new layout? Also is there any way I can get the speedometer with speed limits from the aa app on my phone to display on my head unit because the head unit only shows speed limit not speedometer

As far as I know you have to make sure with the new Android auto
- you force stop the AA application on your phone, clear data and install the new 4.5.
- you have to select the new UI under settings in AA.
- it could still depend on your country server, but it seems this worked for many other people.
