Curious as to what this app does and how well it works. Anyone have a screenshot of this running.
Thanks
JM
I use TrueVGA and it works well. You can see all Icons only the CommManager is blurred.
Please attend the the correct order of installation.

Can I ask why you use TrueVGA (and not OzVGA)?
I've not tried either on the Ameo, and before I go for one, I was curious if anyone who has tried both knew of a reason to go for one instead of the other...
Ta muchly

There are some problems with OzVga. For example, few Icons are missing.
Greets
I tried installing the files above, as OzVGA had always been somewhat a mixed bag of giddiness and disappointment for me.
In the end, I've had to uninstall TrueVGA as well, mainly because my signal meters and start menu icon etc etc would not show. I installed in the correct order and yet still nothing.
As a seasoned XDA-er, is there a trick I'm unwittingly missing?
Cheers
Ant
didnt lose my signal icon, but the one telling me if its G or 3G, connected to HSDPA etc seems to come and go now, rather than always be there as expected.
other than that, and some of the settings pages being messed up, works nicely.
Yeah, for my case, my data connection icon always display itself as trying to connect to a WiFi network even though that's not true. Some of the settings screens are badly messed up, as you have mentioned.
I have another query: does the Side Display works in true VGA mode?
I tried to attach the keyboard to the screen but nothing comes up.
The Keyboard did not work. I use the Resco Keyboard it is much better than the original.
Oh, I wasn't referring to the software keyboard input. I mean, when you attached the hardware keyboard onto the screen of the Athena, there will be one strip of visible space of the screen that shows some status like time, messages etc.
It works in normal VGA mode, but I cannot get the display in true VGA mode.

The "one strip of visible space of the screen" works ok in a true VGA mode in mine device. You should not attach but close by the keyboard the screen. Sometimes it doesn't show the white strip, but try to move a little bit the keyboard, because it reacts to by sencors to magnets on the keyboard.
Yeah, you're right. I need to move the keyboard around until the display comes on. Thanks!

My Comm Manager, phone pad, Connection icon (E (edge), etc) and password screen don't display properly. Did you have these issues and if so, how did you fix them?
Also, what did you use to create your theme? I want to create a new theme for the newer resolution.
Thanks in advance.
When I last used real VGA mode it was on my Universal.. Again there were icon problems, but on this very forum there were VGAFILES packs that had file to put in the windows directory that replaced the missing icons.
I cant remember the exact details, but I suggest people having problems look through the Universal forum for VGA info as there was a LOT there.
Hope this helps.
I have all about VGA screen's file for my universal. But since i still waiting for my athena, i can't decided wich file is needed. Just icon or something?
Is anyone using SPB Mobile Shell with any of the VGA apps? If I have it loaded on the today screen, the pda locks up when it tries to dispay the Today screen. The only fix thus far is to remove it from the Today screen.
Thanks

yes u are right the pda locks when using SPB Mobile shell. i have a question about the keyboard how to use it because in true VGA mode i see NO keyboard its white space with no letters and also can someone confirm if resco keyboard can be used in trueVGA mode?
I´am using the Resco keyboard and it works fine.
Hi, after installing MarkVan's true VGA package in this link
http://www.jaml.com/MvRTrueVGA/, I have identified the following issues that I'm still unable to solved. I thought that a special thread to address specifically problems after this installation might be helpful.
I'll start by first listing what I've identified as problems:
1) setting>system>backlight screen could not be used. This problem is serious, as somehow by default, the backlight is switched off after just a few seconds in true VGA mode. Even if I try, using QVGA mode to change it such that backlight will not be switched off, as soon as I toggle back to the true VGA mode, it is switched off after 10 seconds again.
2)setting>system>clear storage screen is garbed. It is difficult to make up what the input instruction are in performing hard reset. Not critical but would be nice if the screen could be fixed.
3)setting>system>power screen is garbed due to wrong sized icon. This is minor problem.
4) Setting>system>TV out screen title has the wrong font. Minor problem
5) Setting>system>VueFLO screen title has wrong sized font. Minor problem
6)setting>connection>comm manager screen is garbed. Not being able to control the connection could be quite a problem. In this application, the Settins>Wireless LAN screen is also garbed. I can solve this problem by installing Commmgrpro to give exactly the same functionality, however. Therefore, I would say this is not really an issue. But would be nice if someone already know how to solve this.
7)setting>connection>wireless Lan heading and the screen is garbed. The screen could not be used. The font sizes within all tabs are of wrong sizes. Again, CommmgrPro solves this problem by replacing this.
8)setting>personal>phone (pin2 and "more" tab) are garbed
9) Phone. Although I've applied VJbigpohne, I'm somehow unable to get exactly the same effect as what vj has in his screen shot. His screen shot showed that the numbers are nicely sitting in the centre of the phone buttons and the phone stretches all the way to the bottom of the screen. Mine looks different and ugly. The numbers are sitting to the extreme right edge of the buttons and there is a blank space at the bottom of the screen. I would like to fix this to look good
10) Spb GPRS monitor plugin has wrong sized font. As a result, I cannot see the download speed of my connection. The main application itself, which shows in chart form the usage has no problem. I have been looking for another product that works fully under VGA mode to replace the Spb GPRS monitor, but none of them gives me the download speed (They only shows the total MB downloaded, but not the Kbps info)
11)Pocket music. In landscape mode the option and playlist buttons are missing. In portrait mode there is no such problem. edit: this is not the vga problem,as it also behaves the same way I'm qvga mode.
12) Software Input Panel, or the soft keyboards, are soooo small, that they are unuseable. The standard big keyboard was nice as I can use my finger to type it without covering up the screen. If it is not possible to use the original soft keyboard, then I would like to use the HiKeyboard, because this keyboard has the ability to also do the job the the Spb full keyboard, as well as provide a calculator keypad. I like Hikeyboard the best, among all the ones I've evaluated. However, with MvrTrueVGA, I'd be forced to use only the resco keyboard. I prefer not to pay for resco keyboard, and to pay for Spb full keyboard, when I can just pay for Hikeyboard. I also much prefer HiKeyboard over Spb Full keyboard because it has the option to reveal what you have typed without exiting the full keyboard. Coming to the worst I'd get the Resco Keyboard although it is not as good as the Hikeyboard, so I supposed this is not the most seriuos matter.
13) Quick GPS program does not display correctly, and at the bottom of the screen display does not reach all the way to the edge of the screen. It looks ugly. Also, you can't see vital date and validity information on this screen.
14) Pocket Mechanics - The icons are too big and the characters are too small. It look real ugly as compared to the QVGA appearance.
15) My VOIP client SJPhone does not stretch all the way to the bottom. In landscape mode, the bottom part of the applications are cut off, while it leaves a big hole on the right. EDIT: qvga display landscape mode is also faulty I'm the same way.
16) In QVGA mode, my H and G indicator for data download has disappeared under true VGA mode. In place of the H (which means HSDPA connection is available), it shows the "connection is active" indicator instead.
In place of "HSDPA is in use" indicator, it shows just the signal strength without indicating whether I'm on a UMTS or HSDPA connection.
There might be more problems with other applications which I have not listed, and if you know of any, please add them in as a repository for all of us to look at.
It is possible that some of you have got solutions to the above problems.
If so, let's post the solution here, quoting the problem number if you can.
Thanks guys and gals
I'm not sure (and I'm happy if I'm wrong) but I think the best answer is:
"Yeah, but what'cha gonna do..."
WM5 is not intended to be used in full 640x480 mode, roumors will have it that WM6 is. So let's keep our hopes up.
But you obviously have more problems than me. Most screens are good and readable for me, except the phone (before applying VJBigPhone), Clear Storage, QuickGPS and the G/E/U/H icons + signal level. Of all these, the GEUH and signal level indicator is the only thing I "need" fixed (I can live with the rest).

Hi Moskus,
Thanks for the reply.
May I get more specific about what you're having?
a) You mean your soft input panel (on screen keyboard) is not too tiny? Are you using Resco keyboard to overcome the problem? Are you able to use the standard with no problem?
b) Your backlight adjustment screen is okay? Using the standard or replacement which consumes additional memory?
c) What about yout comm manger screen? Are you still using the standard or using a replacement which takes up more memory?
d) Your phone does not leave a hole at the bottom after VJbigpohne is applied? The characters on the keys are centered or also to the edge? I saw VJ555's screen shot and its as beautiful as the standard. Mine is aweful looking, although it works. Are you having the perfect looking screen just like VJ555's or are you putting up with the less than perfect looking screen?
e) Do you use SPbGPRS monitor? When you click the task bar icon, does the pop up screen display correctly? Or are you not using this?
f) Your quick GPS is displaying okay?
g) What is your ROM version?
h) What it your os language?
Thank you for sharing these information.

I think we have different "standards" for what the problems are.
a. I'm using the Resco keyboard, since the original is not showing up (as described in many other threads here and at the Qtek 9000 forum)
b. The backlight adjustment screen is OK.
c. The Comm Manager is "squished" but usable. I would prefer it if the icons were bigger, but I can use without any serious problems.
d. The phone does leave a gap at the bottom with the last displayed picture, and it would be nice if it didn't. But I can use the phone without problems.
e. I haven't tried SPG GPRS Monitor on this device. However, I do not have problems with the "home icon" that Magic Button is displaying in "Task Bar mode" and I can press/click on the other status indicators.
f. The QuickGPS application is also "squished" together as the Comm Manager is. But I can read when I last updated and I can find the "Update now" button without problems. I am able to use the program, but it could look nicer.
g. My ROM version is 1.25.409.2 (03/21/07).
h. My language is (not supprisingly) norwegian.
So TrueVGA is not perfect, and it probably never will be (until WM6 I hope). But I think the advantages (insert pun here) outweights the disadvantages. Using my Advantage without TrueVGA is not an option for me anymore.
I agree with you that it is not an option for many people. I guess I need to lower my expectation a little. It was just that after seeing the beautiful screen, the initial euphoria was somewhat dampened by the ugly screens for some places and for some program.
I'm using VGA mode most of the time, and use the largest font in the setting>system>screen>font selection due to the strain on my eye if I use other fonts.
One of the key problems that I had using trueVGA initially was that because I could not control the backlight setting, everytime I toggle to VGA mode, it revert to turning backlight off in 10 seconds. There is absolute no way to change it to stay on for longer time. So it was very frustration to look at an extremely dimmed screen which is totally unreadable outdoor. This problem seems to have gone away after two recent hard resets. With that problem gone, I guess I can live with the other imperfection
I had a simular problem with the backlight control --- I have installed "Todaywarrior" and I can control the backlight from the today screen now while in VGA mode.

Hi leblancrs,
Thanks for this info. What can today warrior do? Does it let you specify the elapsed time before backlight is off?
what else can it do?
You have the website link?
Spb pocket plus can adjust backlight, but not the time elapsed setting, I think.

Hi Leblancrs,
Downloaded that and tried it. Unfortunatley, this actually is not doing what I was talking about. While it provides a slider to control the backlight (which I can already do in many different ways without problem in VGA mode), it does not appear to have a facility to specify how many minutes must elapse before backlight is automatically switched off (battery and main would have a different setting of course). Or am I missing out something?
Well ive ordered one of these devices on the basis that Windows Mobile 6 offers VGA. Im pretty confident that is official not just hopeful but Microsoft have been known to dissapoint before.
If thats the case then I guess this device will be up on ebay pretty quick. Im not going through all the stuffing around for VGA like what you're all experiencing and like what I went through for Universal VGA. Despite the fact that converting to VGA seems to be a much easier process now.
Hhhmm
I have installed MW6 on my device and no native vga support I am afraid.
Oh well.

I used truevga for a while, although I didn't experience quite the same amount of problems as Eaglesteve I did have distorted comms and dialpad screens and was unable to change the brightness. There were a few other niggles but these were the prevalent one.
After getting over the novelty of tiny icons and lots of space on the today screen I eventually removed the program. Now IE and Opera support high resolution it seems like even less reason to use it.
There seems to be no REAL advantage to its use other than to view lots of icons at once.
Taking all the problems into account I can live with chunky icons - they're hardly offensive to the eyes. and I suppose didn't pay good money for a 5" screen to squint and have to get my pen out evey time I want to type something or navigate through menus.
Much as Microsoft DO neglect certain applications and functionlity with windows mobile I think that they have made a conscious decision not to use VGA and this decision would have been made for a reason, though we may never know it.
I'll install MVRTruevga again and give it another try now and see if my opinion alters......

There are also a number of apps that look pretty strange with MvRTrueVGA. But I'll put up with some cosmetic defects for functionality. I just love being able to see a couple days of appointments, device status, weather info... plus an ilauncher strip, all on my today screen!

I had the same excitement myself initially, though I found it difficult to press these icons with my fat fingers and inevitably decided that it was easier to just navigate to the program folder and leave essential apps for the today screen. I hope a new VGA solution is developed soon which makes the icons a bit bigger and throws up less garbled screens and program glitches.
In the interim does anyone have link for how to alter the sidebar/ softkey size so they look like thse in MVRtruevga? my internet is very slow on my phone today so searching is proving very frustrating.

It is certainly easier to edit word and excel documents in VGA mode - I'm surprised MS didn't create a highres option for their office apps like the one in PIE.
You can change the default font size via the system>screen menu instead of switching to VGA for a slight improvement.
Strange situation. I got the lapdock a few days back from the sale and I'm running Darkside w/ Fruitcake 2.3.5 webtop. I plugged it in, everything works (although by god it boots slowly) except the desktop doesn't go to the edge of the screen. There's a black margin around the display that my mouse cannot reach. The displayed screen is smaller than the actual LCD screen.
I had tried fastboot wipe webtop and reinstalled fruitcake with no improvement. I had also tried webtopmod1 and the issue persists.
Any ideas?
maybe lcd density settings can/are messing with it? just throwing that out there.
I had the same issue on my hacked webtop. I resolved it by editing my /etc/X11/xorg.conf file.
Towards the bottom are "Screem sections". These define possible choices for screen layouts. In my file, the second of these Screen sections has an Identifier "Screen HDMI". In this, you can set the mode and virtual screen size. Set these both to 1366x768.
You obviously need root, and a way to edit the file. Once edited, reboot (clsing and opening the dock does not restart X).
Original:
Code:
Section "Screen"
Identifier "Screen HDMI"
Device "Tegra HDMI"
Monitor "HDMI"
Option "ARGBHWCursor" "false"
DefaultDepth 24
SubSection "Display"
Depth 24
# Uncomment to override the preferred resolution chosen by UseEDIDModes
Modes "1280x720"
ViewPort 0 0
# Defaults to the size of the chosen mode
Virtual 1366 1024
EndSubsection
Corrected:
Code:
Section "Screen"
Identifier "Screen HDMI"
Device "Tegra HDMI"
Monitor "HDMI"
Option "ARGBHWCursor" "false"
DefaultDepth 24
SubSection "Display"
Depth 24
# Uncomment to override the preferred resolution chosen by UseEDIDModes
# Modes "1280x720" Orig
Modes "1366x768"
ViewPort 0 0
# Defaults to the size of the chosen mode
# Virtual 1366 1024
Virtual 1366 768
EndSubsection
There might be better ways, but this worked for me.
NOTE: The virtual line need not exist at all per the comments
That was amazing! Thanks. It was way above my head and I'm glad someone can fix it.
Does this change work for the entertainment center also?
My webtop fits the lapdock screen just fine, but when I use the entertainment center, video is squished horizontally leaving 2 black vertical stripes on the sides.

Is there a way to edit the xorg.conf file right on the phone? Or do you adb copy it to a pc, edit it, and copy it back?

I am happy using vi in a terminal, but I assume that there are many text editor apps available.
I would caution you to be carefull though. Make a copy of the file first.
I have never used the entertainment center. so can not help you. If is is still 'droid though (and not a webtop flavor), this will not have an affect.
In my case when this happens, I fix it with a simple StartX command on LXTerminal.
However, ever since I went to Fruitcake 2.3.5 Webtop, the screen res change problem hasn't happened again.
Cheers!

Lapdock resolution is off??
Hi Everyone...I hopeI am not bothering anyone, even though I haven been reading lots of post with no luck about this issue... I am experiencing this same issue with the lapdock, it does not run at fullscreen, there are black bars all around.
I am running stock firmware 2.3.6 with webtop version WT-1.2.0-110_OLY-6 // Also the only modification I've done to the phone is that I root it...
One strange thing is that when switching to the entertaiment center it work at fullscreen! but not in webtop...
I already tried modifing the xorg file using Root Browser with same results, I've also use startx command from lxterminal but it keeps not showing at fullscreen.
I am still afraid of using webtop from fruitcakes as I am afraid to ruin the phone (n00b....reallly n00b)....so I would like to know if anyone has any other thoughts before testing with fruitcake?
Hey all,
So I'd like to share my discovery with all of you.
Yesterday I was playing around with my Rooted Nexus 5x on Android O DP2 and later found that I activated Night Light in Settings>Display.
The requirements are:
A rooted Nexus 5x/6P on Android O
Pixel Theme placed in vendor/overlay
Developer Options enabled
Steps:
What you want to do is:
1. Add the Pixel theme to vendor/overlay (there are a lot of articles online for this)
2. Change your smallest width in Developer Options to 450.
3. Activate the Pixel theme in Settings>Display>Advanced>Theme
4. Voila
Why does it work?
I honestly don't know if I were to take a guess, it would be that the combination of Pixel theme and DPI trigger the software to think it's a Pixel, but again, just a guess...
I am attaching screenshots of everything and also the overlay file I used, please report back whether it worked or not!
Cheers!
Interesting! Since its already there, we should be able to trigger it without root and UI.
We need figure out what it wrote to settings.
Could you dump adb output of these 3 command, try to filter out key and value related to night mode.
I check mine and could not find one, perhaps it never existed since I never had a chance to access it yet.
Code:
adb shell settings list system
adb shell settings list global
adb shell settings list secure
Then we should be able trigger Night Light using app that can write custom key to settings like AutoTools.
Maybe one time adb command is need to grant the app permission to write secure settings depend on where the value is stored.
Developer can write an app for the switch. Better yet, Night Light quick settings tile!!
EDIT: You may also placed the Night Light tile on Quick Settings, check values of 'sysui_qs_tiles' under secure settings list.
We might be able to just add Night Light tile there using adb command.

Arghh, totally forgot about this. They likely only start laying ground works for this kind of overlay capability around N-O (quite fresh).
Probably in-preparation for Project Treble, make it easier for OEM to configure devices. Forgo the need of modify main framework for each device.
However, I just did a quick look inside overlay apks posted above. They are no night light related strings laying around, good news for us.
As of O, our main framework-res should be the same as Pixels. This is the reason they made overlay like this.
Nevertheless, whatever detection mechanism they using for Night Light detection. There are using switch and intensity slider in settings mean they will be save inside settings provider.
We can hook onto it.
The method you mentioned was used in N, they modified that value for each device.

I check mine and could not find one, perhaps it never existed since I never had a chance to access it yet.
Night light is enabled by changing the bool value from false to true in the bool.xml in framework-res.apk/res/values/bool.xml/<bool name="config_nightDisplayAvailable">true</bool>

So I did that and only found Night Light related details in secure, I'm attaching all three complete-non filtered files!

Interesting! Since its already there, we should be able to trigger it without root and UI.

Thanks, those values store inside 'secure settings'.
I tried manually insert them into settings, actually got settings app displayed 'Night Light On' message.
Night Light itself is not working, looks like they still do some explicit check on certain conditions which your method some how have met.

I followed your steps, but unfortunately it doesn't seem to work.
I first extracted the theme to the folder "overlay" i created in vendor. Rebooted and applied the theme succesfully. Then opened dev option and adjusted the min width to 450, it changed to 449 automatically. Nothing happened. Rebooted but still nothing.
Anyway thanks, I will try it again later cause i loved Night Mode.

Hey all,
So I'd like to share my discovery with all of you.
Cheers!

You need to know how to flash TWRP, there's a guide by Heisenberg over here
Once in TWRP flash Magisk v13 (unofficial snapshot) and install Magisk Manager 5.
Magisk: https://forum.xda-developers.com/apps/magisk/unofficial-magisk-v10-beta-built-t3521901
The download is on thier GitHub! Cheers!

Did you try my overlay file? If yes, it contains the rro type too, switch between that and Pixel while on 449 smallest width (yes it switches to 449 automatically) and your screen should flicker and your settings screen should move down one row! Please let me know if it works!

I'm glad it did!
Not working for me.
Using rooted Nexus 5X Android O DP2
I copied all files in /vendor/overlay/ folder.
I have the option to select a theme, I can select 2 themes but nothing is changing if i clock on them.
I also changed my min DPI to 449 like you said in your post.

I am using Android O??
It works in DP3, you dont get the theming option but night light works.
Does anyone know how to invoke the slideshow (and how to get out of it).
Do you mean demo mode -> com.nook.partner.daydream.DayDream?
Maybe try:
Code:
adb shell am start -n com.nook.partner.daydream.DayDream
(I don't have partner.apk running so I can't tell immediately.)

No, that doesn't do it. ADB returns the error: Bad component name: com.nook.partner.daydream.DayDream
I found this in another post for DISabling demo mode (thought that might be useful....):
"--- turn your Nook ON
--- go to Settings - Screen - on Screen window press-and-hold top-right button AND same time keep tapping the "Screen" caption (on a top of display)
--- Demo Mode will pop up on your display
--- undo 'Toggle the demo mode'
--- now to activate "normal" mode switch off-and-on your Nook !"
This does, indeed make a third entry appear under "Screen" (and greys out the screen timeout option), but checking the toggle demo mode option doesn't seem to do anything so I guess there is additional magic, some odd button combination or a secret handshake, dance, etc., that actually starts demo mode. That knowledge remains unknown to this mortal. Powering down/restarting, rebooting or putting the screen to sleep and reawakening (I didn't try a kiss...) did not do anything. And it just went to sleep on its own right now and on awakening was still in normal mode
I know there is a db entry where the mode can presumably be turned on or off, but the same requirement for additional unknown falderol may apply to actually get the show started. Hmm.
Edit: OK, so I took a look at the packages. Perhaps the one you suggested is for the newer Nooks? Anyway, there is com.bn.demomode so I tried a similar command to the one you suggested: am start -n com.bn.demomode.DemoMode. I got the same error as before (Bad component name).
HOWEVER.....as I was typing this the device just started going through the slides!? So I have discovered one thing already. It's not going to work for what I had hoped. It apparently only reads png images and there is no control over the slides at all, just a relentless circle of the images.
The good news is that the instructions for getting out of demo mode work
The slides are resources inside partner.apk:
res/drawable-xhdpi-v4/demo_00_splash.png
res/drawable-xhdpi-v4/demo_01_glowlight.png
res/drawable-xhdpi-v4/demo_02_display.png
res/drawable-xhdpi-v4/demo_03_navigation.png
res/drawable-xhdpi-v4/demo_04_shop.png
res/drawable-xhdpi-v4/demo_05_touch.png
res/drawable-xhdpi-v4/demo_06_battery.png
res/drawable-xhdpi-v4/demo_07_support.png
res/drawable-xhdpi-v4/demo_08_wifi.png
If you want a real slide show, it's probably better to use an app.

Again, I think those might be for a device other than the original NST. There seems to be no partner.apk on the NST and the images for demo mode are in /system/media/slideshow/standard/default but I agree with you about the need for something else. I was just checking to see if a local resource could be harnessed before I looked for something external.

Oops. Sorry, I got all confused. I was thinking NG2 or NG3.
Code:
# cd /data/data/com.android.providers.settings/databases
# sqlite3 settings.db
sqlite> update secure set value='on' where name='demo_mode';
sqlite> .q
