SM-T580: constant overheating - Samsung Galaxy Tab A series Questions & Answers

I have an SM-T580 tablet that overheats constantly, which means that the battery is being drained all day. This started after an OS update (I don't remember which, it's been years since the last one) and it doesn't get fixed even if I wipe it. So what are my options? Can I downgrade to an older version of the OS? Or should I try another ROM? In that case, it must have full widevine support (since I watch amazon video) and google services (since I use youtube a lot). Thanks!

[Q] G2 VZW 442 stock rom terrible battery life for past month or so

Hey guys, I've had my VZW G2 since Feb and could not imagine being any happier with a phone. It's been completely perfect up until about a month ago.
I've been running official KK 442 since close to release. I tether a Pebble Steel daily. Phone is rooted and xposed with G2 Tweaksbox, GravityBox (KK),XBlast, and XuiMod as the main xposed mods installed.
Apps commonly used:
Facebook
FB Messenger
Poweramp
Chrome
Opera
Spotify
BleacherReport
Yahoo Fantasy
Light Flow
Sync (bit torrent Sync- just started using it well after battery issues started)
Pocket Casts
Mint
Pebble app (always latest from Play Store)
Various pebble apps like MusicBoss and PebbleLocker
Running this set up, i used to EASILY get at least 30+ hours battery life, with most days above 40+. That's being tethered to my watch for 9 hours. I didnt even have a charger at work because id be at 75% by the end of the day and would get an entire second work day out of the same charge.
Then one day I woke up and havent been able to get better than 25, with many days barely making 12-18. My battery life has been effectively halved and I can't figure out why. I'm constantly playing with settings or installing new apps, so I reverted any and all possible changes I'd made and froze all recently installed/new apps. When this didn't fix the problem, I started uninstalling and freezing apps that had been updated recently in the Play Store. When that didn't work, i took more drastic measures:
Things I've done:
FDR device, including wiping all data in TWRP and turning off google's app data sync to ensure fresh settings/config files
Uninstalled or used TitaniumBackup to freeze 40+ apps, including all non-necessary apps often considered to be battery hogs (fb+messenger, for example)
Froze Xposed and disabled all mods to run almost completely stock ROM with largely default settings
Monitored GSAM, BetterBatteryStats, Wakelock Detector, and CPU Spy for rogue/borked apps
Skipped wearing Pebble for a day to test
Updated and downgraded Google Play Services (various versions from as old as this past spring to the latest version released last week)
Prayed to Joe Pesci
Has anyone heard or seen ANYTHING that could be causing massive battery life losses but that doesn't show up as an app with massive wakelocks? Google Play Services has tons of wakelocks, but it always has. It's a known battery hog, but additional WLs and battery consumption are now expected with Google consolidating more and more services into it, so I'm not sure what to expect now. I dont use Hangouts but keep it installed and frozen 99.9999% of the time.
Not sure what else to do at this point.
still having major battery life issues. I've fdr twice and ran stock with minimal apps for a day with very little change.
guess my battery is bad. ugh.
is it worth replacing myself or should I try and get vzw or lg to replace it under standard warranty?

[GT-I9505][stockrom] Very poor battery life after update to Lollipop 5.0.1

The short version: I have kernel wakelocks bluesleep and msm_serial_hs_dma, which keep my phone from going to deep sleep until I kill and disable the bluetooth-adapter-service.
This is what I tried till now:
I updated my Galaxy S4 (GT-I9505) from Android 4.4.2 (I9505XXUGNG8_I9505ATOGNF1_I9505XXUGNG8 ROM, Austria unbranded, phone was originally "3 Hutchison" branded) to 5.0.1 (I9505XXUHOE3), that was downloaded automatically via OTA. I rooted the phone with philz-touch (had rooted 4.4.2 also). I noticed a very heavy battery drain, but only after I had already "cleaned" some of the bloatware. Battery life was less than 10 hours, while it held out almost 2 days with my usage pattern on 4.4.2. So I did a factory reset, which didn't help. I started disabling services, including system services until the point where WIFI and bluetooth wouldn't work anymore at all (even enabling the services again didn't help). But at least I noticed that the battery drain was gone and it seemed to be one of the bluetooth system services.
Since I had to reinstall anyway, I used the I9505XXUHOF2_I9505OXAHOF2_I9505XXUHOF2 ROM (Germany unbranded, I couldn't find an Austrian UHOE3 or UHOF2 to download). Also did a factory reset of course. The battery drain was there again. This was even before rooting the phone, which I then did again to have more options to find the culprit (but I did not uninstall anything that came with stock). BBS showed me the bluesleep and msm_serial_hs_dma wakelocks. The wakelocks stayed no matter if bluetooth was enabled or not. I even flashed the modem on its own (although my phone info showed the right UHOF2 baseband before already), because this sometimes seemed to help people. Didn't change anything either.
In the end I narrowed it down to a single thing I have to do after installing stock (and rooting): disable the Bluetooth-> AdapterService (com.android.bluetooth.btservice.AdapterService) with the "Disable Service" app. The wakelocks are gone and I get almost two days of battery life (a little bit worse than on 4.4 though). Of course bluetooth will now not work at all until I reenable the service and reboot (and remember to disable and reboot as to not have my phone dead in a few hours).
I don't use bluetooth on a daily basis, but killing a system service can't be the solution. Why are the wakelocks there in the first place, even when I never had bluetooth active after a reboot? Are there different hardware revisions and you can't flash all you want? Since most people seem not to have a problem like this on a stock ROM after a factory reset, the only difference can be the hardware, or not?
Hi,
bumping your thread and a question for ya, is 5.0.1 that bad? I'm still on 4.4.2 stock and I did notice a OTA update notification, but I didn't accept it yet.

If the thing bluetooth wouldn't happen (which it obviously does not for everyone or the outcry would be much bigger), there's nothing wrong with it. After I killed bluetooth completely battery life is only slightly reduced compared to 4.4. I liked the dark look of 4.4 more though. Now everything has a bright background. But that's personal preference.

Any reviews for Stock Firmware 32.2.A.0.305

Hi
Just wondering how those running Stock Firmware 32.2.A.0.305 have found the phone to be working?
Any issues or improvements with:
- battery life
- overheating
- phone/wifi signal
- fingerprint sensor
- camera photo quality
- Bluetooth music jitter
Or anything else?
Thanks
R
I'm running Heptyle's kernel, .305 Custom DE and debloated with script.
I haven't reached conclusions yet but so far I think my battery life is better than .253
During app installation (clean installation) I got the feeling it ran less hot.
No further differences until now regarding to your other items.
I'm only going to run STOCK I'm not going to root the phone.
Nothing special here.
Volume for notifications got fixed. And security level is aug 2016 (shame on Sony)
The option to enable the google now pane in the Xperia Launcher (beta?) is back. Note that I did join that Google+ group for getting beta updates of the Launcher.
Camera format settings were reset for me after the upgrade. The version of the app is now 1.0.C.2.7 but I didn't check before the upgrade what it was.
So far it's been smooth, but nothing notably new.
Feels just about the same in all regards
I'm running 32.2.A.0.224 and heard bad things about .253 so have not updated.
I upgraded to the latest one (.305) from EE (UK) on Thursday, and accidently bricked the device (took over an hour to upgrade and so I forgot it was upgrading - d'oh) so have ended up with a clean install.
- battery life : At this time of the day I used to be at 52% (.253), currently 80% (has been off charge for 5 hours so far), was pretty poor for the first two days while Google Play music was hammering the WiFi connection downloading music (why can't it see what's already on the SD Card - argh!), but still an improvement of .253 which was appalling.
It used to be that Google Play Services and Android System were the top users by a country mile - today it's Screen (27%) and Beyond Pod (9%)
- overheating : Certainly running cooler
- phone/wifi signal : No issues before or since
- fingerprint sensor : No issues before or since
- camera photo quality : No issues before or since
- Bluetooth music jitter : As solid as it has been since the last upgrade, i.e. Bluetooth is problem free, Wired occasionally jitters approx 20 minutes after losing Wifi.
Or anything else?
WiFi Calling still temperamental (i.e. needing a reboot), less of an issue for me now I have VoLTE and new masts cover work and home better.
Thanks very much for that excellent and detailed response
I hope this will fix things. On .253 I'm having issues with the finger print scanner, saying hardware is unavailable after long periods of not using the phone. Also, the camera crashes when trying to take a video. gifs and videos on apps such as facebook or youtube doesn't play too. Restart fixes things but it's annoying that I have to do it at the start of the day, every single day. Would love to hear from somebody with same issues who upgraded from .253
I updated to this and done a factory reset (I always do this after installing new update). My device for more than 10 hours now has problem with volume.
If I play any music (on full volume) for more than 1 seconds the volume level is reduced dramatically. My phone has never been in contact with water or anything. As of now I have turned the phone off/on and still no difference. I have used Google Play, Spotify and the same problem occurs.
On the other hand it doesn't heat up. Battery life seems a tad better if I recall so far. Other than that no difference apart from a message I got about battery charging.
Seems to be the hearing protection. New build.prop in .305 is without persist.audio.hp entry. Just re-add it to build.prop (persist.audio.hp=false), reboot and should be working again (you need to be rooted).

Di you have Root?
Ever have problems before?
Yes, I'm rooted (just check tobias waldvogels rootkernel thread), but you need to have unlocked bootloader first (don't forget to make TA backup!).
i found that the phone gets warm (more than previous firmware) when browsing the web using chrome.
i noticed that the sony email client doesnt check/update as quickly enough compared to previous firmware.
i did notice couple of things have been fixed, but my overall suspicion of this firmware is that it introduces more issues than it fixed.
also some kind of security has been introduced to stop you from hiding apps such as the quick apps bar.
im also curious why sony introduced that "battery optimization"? has it to do with maybe the batteries starting to bubble hence causing the back cover to crack? so by reducing the charge amount it sort of stops that from happening?
im also running stock firmware.
I would appreciate you come back w/ a review after a month of usage. If you have been using Android for a significant amount of time, then you know that it's always good in the beginning. I don't think much stock should be put in a review done after a day besides ease of installation and (maybe) initial impressions, imho
ive gone back to .253 firmware. this previous version seems to work much better on my australian z5 compact.
no heating issues. battery is better. email app works better etc. etc.
yes it does have the annoying low volume and a issue with the sms app (when trying to add certain photos). but overall to me it works better than .305 version.

A few weeks ago, I tried this. From @FcukBloat
But for me it didn't work. When I flashed, I got a message that the zip was corrupt (which I can't believe, and it's not the first time this happened). And I also had a problem with Online Nandroid, so in the end I had to redo it.
This time, I just did manually what the script should automate. Next time I'll figure out how to build it myself, if I'm smart enough.
So after a week of 305 vs 253 - I've managed to get through to the end of the day without needing to charge one or twice throughout the day every single day, the phone is running much cooler (i.e. most of the time there is no heat detectable), and is also less laggy, especially when launching the camera. Battery life is getting better by the day too - now at 60% (after being off charger for 12.5 hours) with Google Play Music, twitter, and an hour of MapMyWalk (so GPS usage) - on 253 I'd have been below 20% at this point of the day.

im also going pure stock unrooted locked bootloader ,at least till warranty void anyway\ OR the phone become really slow for some reason, and root will help
example: this phone got only 2GB RAM which very bad multitasking , and heavy apps like CSR2 left my phone with only 200MB .
so i guess il need more Swapfile\Z-ram @1s

BTW
305 still didn't released in my state anyone got idea how to check when it will come out? it is possible?

Google Play Music + Adblockers = Battery Drain

Has there been any progress on dealing with the massive battery drain caused by combo of Google Play Music & Adblockers?
I have tried reverting back to an older version of GPM and that solved it, but it is nearly impossible to keep it from updating (even detaching market entry using TiBu only stops it for about a day). I ran a logcat of AdAway and started whitelisting Google ad servers, but the battery drain persisted and I now had ads.
Care to explain better? I also use GPM & Adblocker and I was having an unusual drain for about a week.
Since I mess with a lot of things, I reflashed everything today (I had 7.1.1 - march update) and now I'm using 7.1.2 N2G47O with Magisk with its Unified Hosts Adblock module and I'll be able to tell if I still have some drain in the next few days

The problem seems to be that a few months ago when GPM was updated, it also increased the pinging of ad servers, for whatever reason. Even if you pay for GPM (I do), the ad servers still get pinged. The issue becomes that most of the adblockers simply alter the host file and denies the loading of the ad. Well, this causes the constant re-pinging of that server to load the ad. When you are streaming music through GPM, it is continuously trying to load those ads, massively draining the battery. I'll get about 1.5 hours out of a charge with this issue.
The same problem, it is probably necessary to put some exceptions for the adblocker, that everything would work correctly
Same problem. Tried whitelisting with no luck.
Adaway and with Magisk unified Adblock. Both are the same with major battery drain.
I don't use ad blocking anymore...

That sounds very aggressive - you may have the battery failure that almost all N6p's have (including me). I just disabled my adblocker and I'll see the behavior, but I believe my phone is about to die.

Luckily I don't. It was night/day difference with Adaway on/off out the old GPM app. I just use a external battery pack I bought for my honeymoon in my gym bag.

The problem with the whitelisting solution is that it causes numerous ads to be allowed, essentially taking away the benefit of AdAway.
Choose the lesser of evils
So glad I finally found this thread. Thank you! I had a heck of a time figuring this out, destroying my battery. I'm using AdHell on an S8 and apparently blocking the ads on play music was doing the same for me - causing the app to churn and eat something like a couple % per hour. With AdHell I just unblocked google play music and play services (just for good measure, don't know if this is necessary) and things seem right again.
I recently had my battery replaced and for a couple of days ran it without an adblocker and totally stock. I always used to root and mess around with the phone but I liked beta Oreo 8.1 so much that I thought I'd try adaway and leave the phone unrooted. Anyway, terrible battery life at work Monday and today. I noticed drain waas high for adaway and that the phone wasn't sleeping. Uninstalled adaway and now a couple hours later, the phone is not draining and has slept with a flatline battery chart.
So, was a solution to this problem ever found? Every time I want to listen to music I have to manually disable adaway... very annoying.
Had the same problem. Battery drained about 30% after 1:30h listening to music. I'll whitelist those apps to see if that would make the difference

Removing the downloaded but not installed Nougat update

Hi, first post. I asked the question on another site some months back about deleting or stopping the install notification about the downloaded, although not installed Nougat update, no answers were forthcoming. My phone on 6.0.1 works great and I have no issues that warrant an upgrade. I have hardly any apps installed on it and really only use it for light internet, photos, the phone and GPS. I don’t really want to update it to Nougat due to some of the horror stories I have read. I am not (yet) very Android proficient.
Can I just leave the downloaded Nougat updated installed, but stop the daily notification to install it?
Or
Can I easily delete the downloaded but not installed Nougat update?
In this case I subscribe to the notion, if it isn’t broke don’t touch it. Maybe I am being too overly cautious.
Current details
Hardware: XT1642.
Version: 6.0.1
Build: MPJ24.139.23.4
Security Update: 1 May 2016
Any help steering me in the right direction is appreciated.
Cheers,
@CC2005
If you remove downloaded files, still it will not stop, then you will get notification for new update available and to download it.
Better if you update to latest version,
otherwise you need to restrict notification for moto updater app or data for it. (I don't remember correctly if those feature existed on MM, as the way it is present in N)
It looks as if I will have to just go ahead and install the OTA Nougat 7.0 update that has downloaded; as there doesn't seem to be a simple way of stopping the notification to install it. As mentioned, I didn't want to install Nougat as it works perfectly now on 6.01, maybe I am just worrying about nothing, obviously Nougat 7.0 doesn't stuff up all devices.
It is still in warranty so if an OTA update causes problems I may be able to return it?
Cheers

If there is any problems and if it's under warranty, you can surely take it to the service center.
As far as I know, if you get a replacement device, it will be updated to the latest version out of the box. So there is no way going back to MM.
If you still want to use MM, your only hope is custom ROMs.
You can't downgrade the official updates.
Nougat is not that bad. Most of us are waiting for Oreo and I am wondering how are you still on MM
Have a nice Day :good:

I have disabled most of the Motorola notifications "Motorola Update Services", "Motorola Notification" and one or two others. This sometimes prevents the "Install System Update" notification as long as I do not power it off, I put it to sleep by putting if face down. Although most of the time I have to delay the install manually by rescheduling the install time-pressing later etc when the message pops up.
I am a light user, and can get up to 8 days (rarely) usage out of a single charge, I have disabled a lot of Google & other Apps that I don't want to use, and turned off many Google Play Services. Lots of photos, calls and WiFi use I get 2-3 days use, so I am trying to keep the current OS. Also the works reasonably well in very hot weather taking photos and using the GPS-off line maps, it does at times get hot and can suffer camera issues and more so, GPS stuttering and lag above 35C-40+C but shade it from the sun and minimise use and it will work ok.
Cheers & have a great day too.
Ok, I've been operating with Nougat 7.0 for two months now. There are pros and cons and some of the cons I will adapt to as they are only preferences, minor setting and appearance.
My main concerns about the OS update were battery life and heating. Normal use, the battery drains a little quicker without WIFI or Sim data on, not enough to cause concern. But with WIFI and or sim data on, it definitely uses more battery power than before, almost at an average of 10%-15% more-not a scientific analysis. I am not a big data users so again not big concern. Although when using data, downloading, surfing etc, the battery rate depletes at a much quicker rate than before, I would estimate 30%-40% faster. I also notice the battery depletes much quicker when using the camera and the associated heat when using the camera feels (going by sense not measuring it) somewhat higher. The camera and video mode are the one that bother me and I forgot to mention, using offline maps, gps enabled (no WIFI or Sim data activated) the battery use is again higher than before.
So, I would have been better off on MM, yes, but it is what it is and I can work around the battery issue when I know my usage of those features will be heavy. A cheap pocket portable USB charger may need to be purchased.
I haven’t done a factory reset and I have only cleared the cache via settings app. Maybe the next step before a portable pocket USB charger is purchased.
Cheers
