hi, I've been happy with stock f/w since my first 2015 unit to current 2019 pro unit but going to root my 2019 pro to get smb r/w access. (as far as I know, official system support is limited to read only and only few apps which has its own smb mounter support write access. to find out this was a bummer because I settled with local smb setup to avoid rooting to get rclone! what a...)
so, after hours spent with google-fu, I learned few things and would like to see if I'm ready.
0. I'm on experience 9.1.1 with 2019 pro(mdarcy)
1. there's a magisk module which support what I want, but not sure if it still works. (probably will, but it was written 3 years ago.)
GitHub - dnfm/shield_samba_rw_mounter: Shield TV SAMBA R/W mounter.

2. to run that module, I need root priviledge for apps > magisk installed
3. to accomplish #2,
3.1. first have to unlock bootloader, then
3.2. flash twrp recovery or patched bootloader.
4.1. with root, I'll lose ota and ai upscaling in return.(although unrooting and revert back to stock won't hard too much, its not sure you can get ai upscaling back.)
4.2. widevine or safetynet won't be affected by bl unlocking or rooting.
but most articles I found was more than a year old and mentioning experience 8 with 2017 pro, so its not 100% sure.
I'm still not sure which is better and safer way to go, twrp or patched bootloader.
developer image(pre root, adb only) was considered in the first place but dropped because it seems there's no real benefit over consumer image but only could make conflict with magisk.
do you think I'm ready to go? or any advice?

I've tried for hours! I don't think it's possible to root experience 9. Followed and tried all examples( they are all old using version 8) but failed everytime, even the so called rooted Dev files appear to be normal unrooted os. Good luck, advise if you succeed.

I successfully rooted using teletype's guide Shield Android TV rooted from this forum, combined with Tutorial: Root Shield Android TV 500GB (Marshmallow) from the Nvidia Shield Zone website. I think the main reason I had to borrow from the latter was that I could not get a cursor to load on the screen in TWRP using the file in the first guide, despite trying 4 different types of mice. Also, there was something in it about drivers which helped I think.
I was able to use Market Helper fine a few days ago but when I tried last night it told me it could not activate as the device was not rooted.
Did this happen because of an update and is there anyway to avoid this happening in the future while still receiving updates?
Can I re-root without having to reconnect my laptop up again?
Hello. Sorry if I sound like a COMPLETE noob here and if I posted in the incorrect place.
I am going to start from the very beginning so I can explain myself.
I am currently on a mission to be able to play Pokemon GO on my tablet and spoof my GPS without getting banned. Ill be running it on an account that I wouldn't care if it was banned so please do not just tell me to not do it.
First of all I had manually installed an update to lollipop (5.1.1) when first receiving the tablet. This was still Samsung official OS. In order to obtain my goal I had to root it. So after trial and error I managed to get my device rooted using KingRoot. Couldn't understand a damn thing because it was in Chinese but it was still successful.
This allowed me to install my GPS spoofer hider (supposed to hide GPS spoof from GO). Now it seemed promising until it told me I needed Xposed framework installed. Went to go install it however now I need a custom recovery manager to install that. I have checked with both ROM Manger and TWRP but I cant find my device. I assume its not supported by either.
Is there any decent custom recoveries that will work for my device or have I hit a complete dead end? Maybe someone might even have a COMPLETELY different approach to accomplish my goal. I don't know if you need this to answer my questions but here is everything that seems relevant in about my device.

I would also like to say thank you. Not just for helping me directly in my situation but for everything. MANY of times I have wanted to do something on my phones and other android devices and I would always end up in these forums and get everything I needed. You guys are the best!
Update.
I have been reading deep in the threads. This tablet seems to be one of THE MOST frustrating android devices to try and work on.
This is what I have tried to this point.
Doing a little more research I found that I could use flashfire to get Xposed working. Thats when I ran into another problem. flashfire will not work with kingroot and will with SU.
Despite all the warnings, I tried to use SuperSUme and install superuser over the kingroot to remove it.
Softbrick..
Put it into download mode and reinstalled 5.1.1 which fixed it, buuuut now I have no root.
This led me to look into kingroot a little more and much like others, I have found kingroot to be a little too shady for me. I will not be using the kingroot path again.
1 step forward, 10 steps back.
I am currently working with someone else on the forums here to see if we can work on a way to get TWRP to work on the tablet. If we are successful then chances are I will be able to downgrade the OS back to 4.2.2 KitKat. My understanding is that OS is rootable for this tablet. After that I am going to look into a way to unlock it so I could possibly use it for cricket. I don't exactly have high hopes for it but it is worth a shot.
Custom recovery may be achievable but please do not kid yourself, you will end up with a brick if you try to downgrade the os
Hello,
I have very important security needs and I'm forced to have my data encrypted everywhere.
However on all my old androids phone encryption work perfectly with custom recovery and root.
How can I enable both encryption and root on my brand new SM-G950F ???
I have look everywhere, impossible to find anybody who have an encrypted S8 running with Magisk and a custom recovery
I have experience with Android and Linux and I am willing to try everything to avoid reselling a phone that I love and that I bought just today...
I have the very same problem. Did you find a solution for having both, root and encryption?
i would like to know also

So I have ls997 as most may know already.
We all know it is not root able past ZV7.
Now to the question...
Since we are stuck for full root stock on 7.0, would it be possible just to flash the required SDK/ Libs from Oreo+ in order to be able to run Oreo+ required apks?
Sure there are manipulation apks that allow value changes, but those are half ass lol.
If this is doable, this would be an awesome work around.
Lineage is nice, but it has issues.
I have been an XDA member/ reader for over 10 years but this is the first time I think I have ever asked a question.
I have a Tab A 510 WiFi that I rooted back in Dec 2019. Since then I have done no other updates except to my installed apps. I want to basically unroot it and install updates that are desperately needed. I then want to reroot it correctly. Plus install a Android ROM that is a much newer version. When I originally rooted, I am pretty sure I didn't get the process correctly done. I have been running it with TWRP, and MAGISK, installed but I am pretty sure I didn't use the correct kernel or build. The tablet has been slowly loosing app compatibility with newer apps. I really just want to start fresh. I also want to remove system apps that are unneeded.
Is the best way to just reset the device, then let it update to the most current security and Android version then reroot it? I have rooted multiple devices in the past but for some reason on this tab A, I have been intimidated by kernel versions and build numbers so I have just ignored any OS updates and have kept the option in settings to automatically update turned off. And have really done nothing with TWRP. I am pretty sure the version is way out of date on my tablet.
Will resetting, updating to correct build and kernel and then rerooting following the directions posted work still? I just want to make sure that what I end up with is an updated and easier to manage tablet. I know how to unlock bootloader, and how to use Odin. And can follow the instructions for in the forum for rerooting. But, I have not been able to find this question answered anywhere in the Tab A forums.
Any advice would be appreciated.
Thank you
