You probably found your answer yourself by now, but the 2015 and 2017 units Don't support Dolby Vision. You would need a 2019.
there is no workaround?
it is a hardware based problem?
It's not a problem, it just never got hardware support until the 2019 version.

When playing movies using MX Player Pro, everything looks great. Even my Blu-Ray rip of Lord of the Rings looks frikking magical.
However, when I play the exact same file using XBMC, the exact same files are choppy and stuttery and unwatchable.
Any ideas?
Thanks!

Yeah, continue using MX Player... :good:
But seriously, they are two very different apps in the way they process the video. MX Player has had a great reputation for its performance for quite some time. XBMC is still relatively new on this platform.
As far as any options regarding tweaking XBMC, I couldn't tell you since I don't use it myself. Perhaps another user would have some advice. And always remember... "Google is your friend"
The difference betwen the two is that MX Player is using HW accelerated playback and XBMC does not. XBMC trys to avoid using special HW acceleration methods that differ with each GPU. With that being said there is a fork of XBMC that adds ARM7 HW accelerated video api which is used by the Nexus 10. This fork is not official.

This web site indicates XBMC external player support, including MX Player:

I hope this helps, I am still waiting for my N10 to arrive so have not tried any of these myself.
Good luck

I feel the same way. I've bought a bunch of Nexus devices over the years, but this one is a big disappointment, it's going back. I just need a simple box that does Netflix and XBMC well. Fire TV here I come -- on sale for $69 today.
I tried playing movies from the Google movie store and my AVR shows "Multi Ch. In" so it is PCM multi channel. Same for Plex. But not for the Netflix app.
XBMC side loaded can do DD and DTS bitstreaming but no sign of DTS-HD or Dolby TrueHD bitstreaming. Not sure whether it's a hardware limitation, XBMC, HDCP fun, etc.

In mx player settings itself, just navigate there on right top of the screen and try change there. I had some problems before with some video files, now all sorted.
Sent from my SM-G935F using XDA Free mobile app
I do not think it's the fault of Marshmallow. MX Player and 'updated and need the new codec. Go here

Works fine on all the shields since 2015. If your receiver doesn't do that though you'll be SOL.
