I need always-on clock screensaver app just like Samsung amoled clock - Kindle Fire General

Would the Kindle Fire perform well as a mobile image viewer?

Basically, my boss wants to be able to show potential clients and others photos of work we've done while out on the road. He has a laptop but never brings it with him and he wanted something quicker. He is looking for something that has a larger screen than his phone (4.3" HTC Thunderbolt), is easy to access/use, and is responsive.
I looked into digital photo frames but was unable to find out if one existed which would suit my needs... and the price range the digital photo frames were getting into with the specs I needed were right around that of the Kindle Fire anyway.
Let me know if any of your experiences with the Kindle Fire suggest my needs would be met with one or if you think I could meet them with something else more easily/cheaply. I really appreciate it.
There are older archos tablets that would probably work nice for just photos, I think u can get a 10 inch for like $150. If you want to actually do anything other that that the fire would probably be the best choice.

The first thing you will have to consider is a 7" screen or a 10" screen going to meet your needs. If portability is the main factor then check out a 7" Kindle Fire.
The Kindle Fire is starting to show up on places like Craig's List for as little as $140 (how do I know? because that is what I paid for mine.....)
Take care
I think the Fire would be good for this and of course it has a lot of other capabilities he might enjoy too. If the relatively small onboard memory size is an issue one of the wifi-connected flash drives that's out lets you easily carry around more stuff but of course that means having another device along. If the 8-hour battery life is an issue you can get one of the battery packs to extend it or charge it in the car between clients.
However the built-in picture viewing app is not the greatest and you might have to search around to find the best one for your needs (I like quickpic).

I'd say to go for a Nook Color. For what your boss needs, the SD slot that we don't have in Kindle Fire will probably make the difference.
But...in the other hand, the Kindle is discreet, you just know it's a kindle if you look behind it. It's black bezel help you to forget about the device and focus on the screen, so for pictures, that would be perfect.
Just keep in mind the storage limitations.

[Q] 7.7 as eReader

Hello to all, Im Xan and this is my first post
Id like to ask those o you who are already 7.7 owners how good the tablet is as an eReader.
how good the reading app included is? (I've watched some promo vids and it seemed a little laggy)
I think it has a "night" mode where the background turns black and the text is in white. Is it pitch black or just dark ? i mean, does that black gives some light?
Im a happy kindle owner but it has obvious limitations..since its not a tablet.
Tablets are good for a lot of things but almost all them use screen technology not suitable for reading
(so far the pixel Qi and mirasol tablets in the market have been a dissapointment)
This is the first tablet with a Samoled screen...thats why im asking how good it is as an ereader,
how it treats your eyes during a 90 min reading session? does the night mode makes things better?
Its a lot of money, so if im buying this tablet i want to kwow i can totally replace my kindle.
Thanks for your time
Dear xangroba,
I do not have the samsung 7.7, and I am a junior adviser, but I know the super amoled technology.
An e-ink reader as the kindle and the sony is the best solution to read since are not backlighted, so your eyes are not stressed after one work day with the PC, nightmode is nice but not the solution in my opinion.
Still I think I ll buy this new device because ezpdfreader and repligo are really cool, and manage annotations in a better way, and are continuosly updated.
I strongly suggest you to take both with you, in the end is less than 500 grams to bring around.
If you do not have a tablet samsung 7.7 is amazing in my opinion. No price to play chess, surf the web, annotate documents on the go, every avid reader could love this, epsecially in these "cloud" times
Reading on the 7.7 is fun. I read a lot and tried many ereaders, and this is finally device that meets all my requirements (light, gorgeous screen, fast, easy to hold with one hand ..yet a big screen)
To reduce eye strain I use an app that allows me to set a custom background. I have set it to a particular shade of gray so that the illumination and color corresponds to the color and illumination of light that is reflected by a book or paper.
The night mode is fantastic for reading in the dark. And of course because of the amoled screen it almost uses no battery power.
(Btw no reader app is laggy on this 1.4 ghz processor )
Thanks for the reply.
Can you tell me the name of the app you are talking? (or other similar apps for that matter...that you may know of).
so...can I induce (...ehem...deduce) that the eye strain problem is negligible to nonexistent?
perhaps youre talking about dimming, dimming its something you can do with other tablets, why the reading experience its better with this one?

Of course I set the brightness to a minimum. But that's not enough. The problem is the illumination of the background. This can be customized by setting a different background color (if you like induction : set the induction base to black
There are a lot of eReader apps that support custom backgrounds, including the stock ereader. I myself use the Aldiko eReader (but I want to work on one myself. I hate it that no ereader allows to define a "dead spot" where you can hold the tablet... but that's a different story)
I think the way the native ebook app on the 7.7 is kind of crappy. But, Aldiko Pro is awesome, and I've had no eyestrain reading several chapters at a time. Granted, it will not be as good as a Kindle or other e-ink reader, but if you tweak the brightness and fonts to your liking then it is very much usable.
im a barnes and nobel customer so i use the nook app, which works just fine. with a black background and the brightness all the way down its a joy.
black on a super amoled screen is ... actually black
I'd like to use one as a reader too, should I worry about the burn in effect?

I guess it would be no different from what it's like on any other HC tablets, apart from maybe being smoother due to the exynos.

Indeed. In fact, the Kindle app works fine enough on my old Tab (P1000) already. This doesn't seem to be a particularly system intensive piece of software.

[Q] My concern about the Nexus 7

First, let me say I am in full support of google on this. Seen some reviews on cnet and engadget that look very promising. My concern (however silly) is the dumbed down UI similar to a kindle fire layout. This is one of the reasons I couldn't stand the fire. We have a fully beautiful version of jellybean running, let's use it! Do you think an option to customize that layout will be available? I understand the marketing aspect of making it simplified for those scared of tablet usage. However, I want to make sure I get the full usage out of 4.1 before I committ.
short answer yes
long answer
its a nexus so you can do whatever you want, t he standard 10 inch tablet Ui is still persent as confirmed in the sdk, so a simple build prop tweak to lower the dpi should enable it. Keep in mind that google does lots of user studies and have found that the phone Ui works better on 7 inch devices.
It's a Nexus device, not some third party device locked down. Nexus means open. It will take you 5 seconds to unlock this device and then not much longer to throw a custom recovery and rom on if you please. Jelly Bean will be completely open and you will be able to install any launchers that support ICS and JB to customize the look of your device.
I plan on knocking down the DPI on mine asap. I run my GNote at 170 DPI for ICS tablet mode and I find it more usable than the phone UI in day to day use.
Being a Nexus I have no doubt the dev community will be tearing up the innards in short order.

Where exactly did you read that the UI was dumbed down at all? It's a full version of 4.1. Please don't compare a Nexus device to anything from Amazon or even HTC...while the backbone of the UI is the same the features are not.
Nexus devices are pure google experience devices that are not dumbed down.
The tablet did not look dumbed down to me? If it's the Play store magazines thing you were concerned about then I am pretty sure that's a widget on the home screen.

Math Teacher seeking Tablet!

Hi Everyone,
I am looking for tablet advice. I am a high school math teacher who teaches using SMARTboards. If you've never heard of this, it's basically a giant white board that is also a touchscreen (picture a 6 foot tablet mounted to the wall). It mirrors the PC in my classroom (via a projector mounted on the ceiling), and allows lots of fun interactive opportunities with my students. However, I am stuck at the front of the room with my back to my kids a lot. I want to change all that, so I want to buy a tablet to control the PC (which in turn controls the SMARTboard).
What I am seeking requires a tablet that could take over a Windows XP PC (wirelessly I assume - we do have WiFi access). Any suggestion on good apps for remote access would be appreciated here, but also I want to know this - would this system seem to be a good one with the Nexus 7?
Do you guys think the screen is large enough for this sort of application (solving math problems with a stylus, and this would be projected onto a large screen for my kids to see)? Or would you think a 10" screen would be better?
Also, would this idea work, technologically? WiFi access of PC... this should allow writing on the tablet to write on the PC... SMARTboard would then show what I'm writing since it is a clone of the PC screen... I just need to make sure that I can easily control programs remotely from the tablet.
I know this may sound like a mess, but I really want to do my homework before spending money I don't otherwise NEED to spend. My smartphone (EVO 4G LTE) does all I need right now, but this would be a toy that I can also use daily for work. Thanks for any input you guys have! Feel free to ask questions if what I said didn't make perfect sense. I just know that XDA is the place to go for tech questions, and this is an awesome community.
Check out this app called Jump Desktop on the Google play store, might be what you're looking for.

Splashtop 2 is really good, works great with my computer.
A 7in screen should be fine if the app in question can zoom, or you dont mind less space.
I notice that with my remote desktop it doesnt matter if im zoomed in unless i try to name a file, or if im using photoshop to paint.
Realvnc for the win !

I would imagine the smartboard uses its own software, could you list the boards make/model? We might be able to help out a bit more. Otherwise you'll just be connecting your tablet to your computer via remote desktop and then using it to control your smartboard. I would imagine you would definitly lose some functionality that way and it would be hard to control with the small screen.
I would suggest either getting a netbook or small laptop and just face the class using it or get a stool to set it on, or to go to the google play store online and see if your smartboard has an app.
Good luck
That app has great reviews - and is cheap too! Thank you for the suggestion! I wish I could test out this system first, haha. Oh well, I'm sure there's a return policy I can use if something won't work.

I have done this actually
I love my nexus but i do NOT think its big enough..
when my arm was in a sling from surgery for over 5 months.. I would use SPLASH TOP .
My tablet was a 10 inch Acer a500 tablet connected thru my netgear wifi router in close proximity . to my Wired connection on the same router. With HDMI MIRROR to 42 INCH HD TV.. i used handwriting and photo shop on the tv screen . i think the 10 inch tablet was ok but the hand writing is hard because of the size of the screen on the tablet Drawing something say the 3 inches tall 1 letter on the tablet will show up as 4 feet tall on that display ..
Your software could have some zoom features in it to correct this. Other wise it would be difficult to make it work... its hard for my to explain the issue .
very doable if your program on the computer can overcome the zoom issue.. i THINK This is what the post above mine was saying..

+1 for Splashtop, but I would imagine there is some sort of Smartboard app specifically for Android devices. If there is such an app, that would probably be your best bet, but I don't know.
Splashtop on the other hand was the smoothest remote control software I've used. It's free as well (as long as your using it on a local network).

if there is a app for the smart board then a 7 in tablet will likely work .. the issue is the resolution and more so pixel density .. If the app will let you project say 1-4 ratio or what ever you need to make it work and resize then you could have a winner...
we use something similar to that smart board at work for blue prints..
ohh and +1 more for splash top Its best and i have tried them all.. the issue could lie in the speed and network ability of the xp pc
Unfortunately there is no SmartBoard app yet. Apple is getting one this fall, and Android MAY in the future. As for now, u can't bank on that.
I'm thinking the Samsung Tab 2 10.1 would be a good choice. Or maybe I should look into Windows Tablets... Hmm.

If you can wait till october- November I suggest you look into windows 8 tablet/PC which could do all of your computer functions with pen input and run all your computer applications.
I have a friend who is also an elementary school teacher and I recommended this device to her as she is also using the smartboard. I haven't used it myself but I think the size of screen is good for it unless you also already have a 10 inch tablet. But to each is own I know I write extremely small and she is more of a bubbly letter kind of gal so I can fit write more you could say.

I checked out tablets at Fry's Electronics today... 7" is definitely too small for this application.
Does anyone else have issues with accuracy of the styli out there today? I tried a few tablets and a few styli... I couldn't write an equation to save my life! It kept not reading it or appearing slightly above or below where I wanted. Then I tried the S pen on the Sammy Note 10.1... It was incredible! It was like writing on paper with a pencil! I don't wanna spend that much, but man that thing was incredible... I think that's what I may need.
Thanks for all of the help guys! Any other tips are still appreciated but I'm pretty sure I won't be a Nexus 7 owner...

Returned my Nexus 7 for a Fire HD

I just made the switch from the Nexus 7 to a Kindle Fire HD. I'm not totally sure it's the best decision, but so far I don't feel bad for making the switch.
I love the Nexus 7, it's speedy, feels great in my hand, and I just love having a stock Android tablet with Jelly Bean. But I'm disappointed with the hardware quality, after several RMAs I still have loose glass on the left side, washed out colors, the speaker is almost unusable in some situations, and the wifi isn't that good. ASUS says they had to rush to redesign this for Google and I feel like it shows. I'm pretty disappointed because I so wanted to love the tablet and there are not any other good true Android tablets in this price range (Galaxy Tab 2 7.0 is not an option because of it's 1024x600 resolution).
Google was kind enough to give me a refund. And I really appreciate that, because I bought the Nexus 7 two months ago. So I picked up a Kindle Fire HD today.
The main reason why I decided to give the Kindle Fire HD a chance is because I'm an Amazon Prime subscriber, I have bought quite a few ebooks from them, I use their Instant Video service, and I do a lot of other shopping with them. So I figure even if I don't really love it as a tablet, at least it'll hopefully be a nice device from finding new content on Amazon.
My first impressions of the Kindle Fire HD after a few hours of use...
The build quality just feels excellent. The glass is where it should be and isn't moving and that's always a good start. The back side feels slightly more premium. It's wider than my Nexus 7 so not as comfortable to hold like a giant cell phone like I do with the Nexus 7, but it has a wider bezel so easier to hold on one edge. Nexus 7 does win in comfort to hold though because of it's lighter weight as well. But the Fire HD is comfortable enough as well, so no complaints.
My next concern area was the display quality. The colors on the Fire HD are warmer and look much better. The screen also seems to be brighter, so that should help outdoors.
Wifi was not really a concern on my Nexus 7, but my signal strength was a bit weak when I was in the back yard, the wifi connection would drop to 2 bars and 13Mbps strength. The Fire HD remains at excellent strength 4 bars and 130Mbps. I love the dual band and MIMO on this.
Speakers are a vast improvement too. They are louder and clearer on the Fire HD. With my Nexus 7 when I watched YouTube podcasts I'd have to wear headphones because it was difficult to hear dialog clearly sometimes, but everything comes out loud and clear on the Fire HD. Heck I have to turn the volume down a bit even.
I miss having a real home screen, being able able to arrange icons and customize the look. But Kindle OS doesn't seem too bad. And since I'm an Amazon Prime customer, I do like the suggestions they present me with. The OS is where the Nexus 7 shines very brightly and the Fire HD doesn't as I expected. But the OS performance on the Fire HD actually seems pretty good so far.
I had no trouble side loading my favorite Android apps and YouTube. I'm not rooting and loading Google Play at this time. Just in case I decide to return it, I want to be able to return it to stock easily. YouTube runs fine and all my side loaded apps seem to be working. So it seems everything I'd been using my Nexus 7 for I should be able to do on the Fire HD.
In summary I'm happy with the Kindle Fire HD so far. The only nagging concern is should I stick with this 7.0 model or wait for the 8.9 inch model. I like the smaller size, but am missing out on higher DPI and a faster processor, it's pretty tempting.
Once(if) it gets a custom recovery and bootloader, and gets jellybean ROMs, its going to be awesome.

:good: Good Decision
I also have a Nexus 7, last week it started having whiteout and washed out screen/collor issues. Its been over a month so not sure what to do with it now, but I have really been loving my rooted kindle fire hd with google play store and apps

I sold my original Kindle Fire to get the Nexus 7. But after going through 2 units, I finally returned it due to hardware failure issues and decided to wait. When the new Kindle Fire HD was announced, I was so excited I ordered the 7 inch model even though I also ordered the 8.9 inch model. For some reason, possibly due to how well they are built, the Kindle Fires hold their value very well. I'm not worried at all about re selling the 7 once I get the 8.9.

This applies to me also. I just traded my Nexus 7 for an unopened Fire HD plus $40. My Nexus had similar issues to yours. So far I'm very pleased with my decision. You can have a home screen if you install ADW launcher. It's the only launcher I could get to work. If you hit the home button it does not give you the option to choose a new launcher, it defaults to the Amazon launcher. Also, the Kindle app won't open from ADW. I made ADW a favorite and avoid the home button unless I need to get to my Kindle App. Not the ideal situation but gives you the option to not use the carousel, change the wallpaper, use widgets, etc.
Once CM10 is out for the Fire HD it will make things even better.

Good!
Thank you for your sharing, I need it!
Another thing I'm liking about the Kindle Fire HD is it's soft keys. I side loaded Dolphin and enabled full screen mode and I really have FULL SCREEN. I love how the soft keys minimize to a small little overlapping tab on the edge. I have so much screen space for viewing pages. The Nexus 7 has those huge honking ever present soft keys that rarely go away.
I am on the same boat. Nexus 7 would be awesome it it wasn't for the build quality. I am thinking about the nook HD+, it sounds awesome.
KFHD = locked. N7 = unlockable
Good luck with CM10 on the KFHD. The bootloader is locked. It's not necessarily impossible to work around it, but will be a major headache/inconvenience, and many CM folk I know are steering clear just on principal.

I backed up the Google Music app from my Nexus 7 using ES File Manager. Then copied it to my Fire HD and installed it. It seems to be working just fine, I'm streaming my music from Google.
I was on the same boat as you. After returning two nexus 7s due to raised screen, I was hoping for a better build 7 inch tablet. I end up buying an excite 7.7. I was able to get the excite for 360$. I think it is a good deal considering the superb screen, build quality and features....

Hi! I did get my KFHD a week ago. I wanted to buy Nexus 7, but Fire HD looks better for the same price. Rooted, G Play, all work awesome! The only problem is - I can't start any launcher from the google market. It is downloaded, installed, but there is NO open button and it doesn't show up in apps... What am i doing wrong?

I've heard only ADW Launcher seems to work. And if you press the Home button you'll go back to the Amazon launcher instead, so I guess you need to put ADW Launcher in your favorites and avoid hitting the home buttons. That sounds like a PITA to me, so I haven't messed with it myself.

If you do root, you can put go launcher ex apk in the system/app folder, install and reboot. Go launcher will work and you can set it to default, the kindle will ask what you want to use when it boots from that restart. Then you'll be good to go. I had it working perfect on my KFHD but its back in the box and going to UPS tomorrow.
