Hi guys. I have a Fire HD 10 2017. When I first got it I let it update to 5.6.2. Later I decided to root with the intention of clearing Amazon bloatware and changing the launcher for a more minimal Android experience. I successfully gained root using Kingaroot, installed SuperSu, changed my build.prop to 987654321 to preclude future updates, and followed a tutorial here to delete many Amazon apps via ADB.
After deleting several apps, not including the Fire Launcher, I restarted my device. Now it will not boot to Home screen. It simply shows the Amazon start up screen. I can access the restore mode, and tried to do a factory reset, but no change.
The only thing I can think to do now is reload a stock 5.6.0 rom. Will that work? Can I do that from just the restore interface? Are there any guides posted here to help me through that?
Thanks for your help, any assistance is appreciated.
tl;dr -- How do I restore my original FireTabletSettings.apk to /system/priv-app/FireTabletSettings without adb? --or-- How do I enable adb without the settings panel?
Hi all. I'm reaching out to the amazing braintrust here on xda-d in hopes that maybe someone has some guidance. My most recent adventure has been de-amazon-ing my kids new HD10. And for the most part, I have been quite successful thanks to the wealth of knowledge here in this forum. I've managed to get it rooted, de-bloated, replaced the launcher, and even re-enabled a critical feature not found in the Amazon version of Android (screen pinning, essential for 2 year olds!).
But..... (there's always a 'but'..)..... but.. I have discovered I have somehow managed to lock myself out of adb on this particular device. I did search the forum first, finding nothing helpful for this. In order to get screen-pinning back I rolled the dice and used DragonFire1024's rewritten FireTabletSettings.apk, against the recommendation to avoid it with OS versions after 5.6.2.0 (I'm unfortunately running 5.3.7). I accept full responsibility, it was my gamble. The result is screenpinning resurrected (yay!), but also my settings panel is a mine field of broken links. Apparently much has changed in the settings after 5.6.2. Including how they refer to adb. So tapping on the enable box for USB debugging (here called 'enable adb') crashes the settings panel.
The situation is far from hopeless though, because I am rooted, and I had backed up the original FireTabletSettings.apk to the downloads folder on the tablet. However, when I try to copy it to the /system/priv-app/FireTabletSettings folder, CX tells me it's read-only and can't copy it over. I have it in root mode, and even tried enabling adbd insecure for good measure. But no joy. I do not currently have a recovery (twrp or other) installed.
So I need guidance on how to either enable write permissions (temporarily) on the settings folder or on how to install a recovery, all without adb. Or if there's some backdoor way to enable adb, that would work too.
Thanks for any advice.
UPDATE: Hey friends, I just wanted to update this thread with my progress (albeit negative progress, unfortunately). It seems my gamble with this ill-advised mod has failed pretty hard. I'm updating as a cautionary tale to others considering modding their settings file outside the recommended OS versions. I can say pretty confidently: DON'T DO IT.
EDIT: After initially getting stuck after a hard reset, I was able to manually flash an Amazon rom using adb sideload. This did the trick. It is now full factory stock, including the settings panel. I have to do everything over again (except messing with the settings panel), but I have control of my tablet again. The moral of the story is, unless your os version is supported, don't mess with the settings panel. It will rob hours of your life you'll never get back.
Is it possible that Fire Toolbox V22.0 has disabled System Updates on my Amazon Fire HD 10 Gen 9? That's the only thing that I can think of ... even following their Manual Procedure of updating doesn't work. Called their Cust. Serv. and they were stumped ... until I fessed-up that I used your Tool. Of course, their solution was "Do a Factory Reset" ... Noooo!
If anyone has an idea it would be greatly appreciated. - Article_86
I just noticed the same thing on both my 2021 Fire 8+ tablets. I seem to remember the last time I used Fire Toolbox, there was a pop-up recommending the disabling of system updates which I agreed to. I'm going to check that out. If there's no way to undo the disabling in Toolbox, I'll probably factory reset and use Toolbox again, without disabling updates.

I have exactly the same problem. Does the factory reset work? Any other workarounds?
Same thing here. Is a factory reset the only option? No other way to activate OTA updates again?
so I got the newest model, the fire toolbox 25.1 works if don't click update additional updates. Unforetuenaly I clicked to update and cannot do restore settings, or factory reset in recovery to restore. The fire launcher cannot be removed due to being a "protected app" and each time I try to set default launcher, OTA updates automatically turns on. If I install any other launcher, cannot set to default, as the tablet removed the entire section of where to choose launcher and trying to change launcher fails all the time.
Hi All,
Hope someone out there can help me.
So I have a Fire HD 10 that is about 1 year old and used fire Toolbox to have Microsoft launcher as a custom launcher and also did all the usual stuff like disabling ads etc and it worked perfectly.
Yesterday I got a new Fire HD 10 Plus for my wife (the latest version) on the black Friday offer
I have tried to do the same and install Microsoft launcher on it and everytime I hit the home button on the tab it just defaults back to the stock launcher.
I also have a problem with installing google services when it gets to installing Play store I get INSTALLATION FAILURE:[INSTALL_PARSE_FAILED_NOT_APK}
I am also unable to disable the OTA updates in the modify system settings menu.
The only thing that has worked so far is that the ad screen has been disabled.
Any help out there would be welcome.
Thanks
Does anyone have any information on when there will be an update to fire Toolbox so it works with the latest Fire HD's?
Just got a new one yesterday and it came with 7.3.2.2 version it will not load the custom launcher and reverts back to the stock launcher also unable to disable OTA updates.

I just got my Fire 10 9th gen replacement today and it came with 7.3.2.2
Luckily, my HD 10 Plus was bought in June worked great.
Hi,
The only fix I suggest is if your fire hd is less than 1 month old return it back to amazon for a full refund and get another and make sure you connect it to fire toolbox as soon as you get it to disable ota updates.
Have the same issue here, complete wipe of data and still there is the 7.3.2.2 installed. Really creepy that it directly came with my WIFI Setting INSTALLED...

I just got a new fire hd (8-10th gen) and will do this. Thanks. Two questions. 1) I already have downloaded the toolbox. Once I connect my new Fire will the toolbox see it and activate or do I have to do something (e.g. reinstall it)? 2) Does the toolbox prevent Fire from auto installing new s/w versions? TIA

I had the same issue on my Fire HD 10 with Fire Toolbox V25.2. I reran the install by reopening TB and clicked on the Google Services option and it installed completely on Fire OS 7.3.2.2. Hopefully, this will solve your Plus install.
Hi - I need to remove everything Amazon on my tablet - disable OTA - flash it completely out of this universe. Whatever it takes I must turn this amazon tablet into an Android one. Please, has anyone got the guide for me to do this properly? I am aware of some update that disabled the feature to disable OTA in toolbox.
Thank you

Would require you find both a Custom Recovery and a Custom ROM, both suitable to tablet.
I have a Fire HD 10 (9th gen). I did a factory reset.
Using Toolbox V26.1, after I install Disney+ from Hybrid apps it is asking me to signup and pay a monthly fee.
The toolbox says it could be used without having to register.
Am I doing something incorrectly or am I not doing something I'm supposed to do?
I received my Fire 10 yesterday. When I booted it, it scared the hell out of me how they already knew everything about me. I immediately thought it was the most disgusting device I've ever purchased, because of the software, but then I used fire toolbox and thought I was in heaven, except when I opened it today, I realized that I was in hell. Amazon had reset the whole tablet but left the Google apps. I should have known it was too good to be true. I stopped rooting after marshmallow and will now have to learn it all over again.

The update is the problem. So no custom launcher as standard launcher anymore.
