10 things that I hate about Gingerbread!

I really wonder why there is none of such thread here!
Gingerbread unfortunately brought only bad things to my Nexus. I already forgot why I was so crazy about installing it.
What feature did it introduce again?
Okay the response is much better and everything seems faster...but with lots of bugs?
That screen off animation? Seriously?
Things that I hate now:
- Battery Time: this is bad, can't even run half a day with lot of usage, b
efore I could listen to mp3's one day, ie. more than 4 hours without any problems...now
- Camera: either Cam or Video, the application crashes after I take a photo or video and then I can not connect to it anymore
- Gallery: often crashes, especially if you have an online photo account connected
- unlock screen: I use a pattern, often there is no overlay of what pattern I drag, still the screen can be unlocked
- Market: even if automatic updates activated, it only updates if you open the market and go to the "my apps" tab
- 3G and Wifi: if you are connected to wifi more than 15 minutes and then disconnect from it you do not get any 3G, you have to go to airplane mode and back, this bug appeared ages ago and was fixed, now back again...tells you a lot about their merging control, ie. sucks
- notification led: you know...
- apps: there are a lot of apps running even though I never used them since restart (see it in a task killer app)
- gps: on a random bases it tries to lock even though no app that uses gps is running
- phone reboot: it even rebooted without any notice two times since I installed it
(- Contacts: I still can't enter a simple thing like a birthday on an expensive phone like this)
MOD EDIT: Borderline trolling removed. If you switch OSes, that's your own choice. No one here is stopping you.

4. Blank keyboard- fixed by switching to another keyboard and back again, or a reset

6. In the stock SMS app a long press>delete conversation doesn't always delete the selected conversation; sometimes you have to do it twice.
As far as battery goes, my display is still the thing that takes up the most battery (which is normal) but I had been experiencing severe declines in battery life. Does the switch to 32-bit color require more processing power and therefore battery?
I *#*#4636#*#*>phone information and saw it was set to WCDMA preferred. I remember playing with the option when froyo came out but didn't remember what it was set to (Maybe Gingerbread reset the option...?). I changed it to GSM PRL (Auto), and have experienced increases in battery life, as my phone isn't hunting for 3G all the time- it uses a service provided list of tower locations.
The LED REALLY bugs me.

Juice Defender Doesn't work (but Green Power does - works well but with less flexibility than JD)
Short battery life
Useless keyboard selection gimmicks

Well, glad to know mine isn't the only one that does this!!
On Froyo I would wake up in the morning to freshly updated apps that had updated automatically over night.
I have not had this happen a single time on Gingerbread, and nearly every time I go in to the market there are updates waiting.
What is the point of the automatic update feature when it doesn't work???

auto update never worked for me, even in froyo.

-Battery with CM7 roms
-Trackball wake blocked in non-CM7 roms
-More difficult to mod themes like statusbar (before we just had to change a png and now we have to edit a bunch of files)
So in summary GB roms are still not stable and complete, they have either TB wake missing or poor battery life too

My annoying issues?
- 2 second mic mute after I answer a call
- stock launcher choking after a while
Less annoying ones:
- Market does not automatically update apps
- gps activations without an apparent reason

My annoyances
In no particular order:
The cursor select triangle not lining up with the cursor
Launcher unresponsive/vanishing
Lockscreen pattern not showing (as in the OP)
Phone randomly stays awake at night
GPS turns itself off
Not able to view an apps wakelock any more
USB mount screen shows 'turn off' even when it isn't mounted (UK issue)
USB debugging icon doesn't appear, or doesn't turn off depending on how you enabled it
Exchange push is just crap now, I swear it's getting worse by the day

While I'm not a big Gingerbread lover at all, here are answers to some of the points:
Battery time is fine, at least in freshly installed ROMs it far exceeds what Froyo mastered.
Camera is your own problem - you didn't update radio, or your update went bad.
Gallery never crashed - again, your own problem (you get the feeling now, right?).
3G and WiFi - again, your own problem. No bug.
Apps - and why do you care? Isn't the "DO NOT USE TASK KILLER" thread clear enough? 150-200MB free RAM aren't self-explanatory?
Due to your comments, you might really consider switching to Apple. It would be beneficial both for you and for this forum.
Or you could back up user data, wipe, install new radio and bootloader, load fresh Gingerbread ROM (NOT CM7 or CM7-based), and have most of your points addressed.
Now, having said that, if you want a much better overall feel - install Froyo-based Desire port, or if you don't have any use for Hotspot - DesireHD port. I hate using barebone Android after some experience with it.

have you guys heard about Cyanogenmod ROM? I am using CM7 RC4 and I have no problems that anyone mentioned in this thread....

Maybe you haven't heard that your experience not necessarily represents anything.
For me (and another 2 guys that asked me to reinstall other ROM on their Nexus Ones), CM7 was a huge, awful pile of bugs. Starting with the ill-famous "wonk".
Plus, again, after having some SenseUI I don't really want to go back to plain Android, and wouldn't suggest it to anyone looking for a good overall experience.

I have an occasional problem with the application tray where it stutters, flashes and doesn't scroll properly. It seems to happen only after exiting certain apps, and needs the launcher to be force closed to fix.

Just lost all credibility in my book...
I would suggest the OP decides what features he/she wants in a ROM and then try a few different ones out. There are plenty to cater to all tastes and i'm sure they'll be able to find one that works well for them.

1. exchange sync stops syncing without any reason. can't start a manual sync. only reboot of the phone helps for a short period of time. needs a fix very urgently.
2. TINY TINY notification icons...the worst idea google had for the GB update. i cannot see the difference between the gmail and exchange mail icon on normal usage in example.

One bug and one annoying change:
- The instability of the launchers. I hope they address this.
- The inaccessible GPS toggle. Tasker can't access it and neither can the toggle widgets. Why did they change this?

my mms sometimes does not send if i configure 2 APNs (one for mobile data and one for mms), while i disable the one for mobile data...
it's working fine on Froyo and CM6 before

QFT!!!!!!!!!!!!

Auto brightness adjustment no longer fades, now it just jump straight to the target brightness which is quite abrupt visually.
And of course... trackball wake is gone.

I concur with these points:
- Battery Time: this is bad, can't even run half a day

- Creating shortcuts on desktop: sometimes you can't drag/drop icons to the desktop or to a different spot on the desktop.
- The cursor select triangle not lining up with the cursor
- Auto brightness adjustment no longer fades, now it just jump straight to full bright or full dim.
As for the people suggesting we update the radio and try different roms, while that is primarily what this board is about, it doesn't "solve" anything. This is a stock Nexus One with official everything. If it doesn't work then it doesn't work.

Impressions after a week...

A lot of us have had the device for at least week now so it would be a good time to post impressions after a bit more hands on time. I’ll start...
10 days in I’m still glad I got it but there are plenty of things that could be improved. I’ve been on HTC phones (Desire, Desire Z) before this running at different times standard HTC Sense ROMs as well as various versions of Cyanogen Mod and AOSP based ROMs. My views after 2 weeks of use:
* Loving the fact that Samsung appears to be treating this almost like a developer phone (ala Nexus) in terms of open bootloader, availability of source code etc. I’ve said my goodbyes to HTC precisely because of this.
* Based on the frequency of updates Samsung also appears to be focused on addressing issues. They are one if the first out of the gates for Gingerbread updates to their existing devices so I’m hoping they continue to focus on delivering on the latest versions of Android.
* Touchwiz is not as invasive as HTC’s Sense. It improves on stock android in many ways. My first Samsung phone so I can’t really speak of improvements over previous versions of Samsung ROMs but so far I don’t hate TouchWiz but I do find that they seem to take a lot of inspiration from Apple even when the standard Android implementation is better in some cases (I didn’t hate HTC Sense either but I did find it too far from stock for my liking). Having said that there are some totally brain dead decisions that Samsung appear to have taken which I just don’t get:
1) Default home screen on the left instead of the middle. Why copy Apple on this one when Android’s default makes so much more sense. I love having frequently used apps with a swipe to the right and an agenda widget on the left so I can get to both with a single swipe. Now I have to pick one.
2) Fixed icons at the bottom. I understand Phone and Apps being fixed but not messaging and contacts. I’d like to change those - hell, even Apple lets you change those. *** NEVERMIND *** See posts below. It CAN be edited.
3) Lock screen - talk about making something worse - this one takes the cake. Thank god for widget locker.
4) Dialer logs - I don’t want my SMS messages to show up on my phone dialer logs. There is no option to just view all calls without the rest of the stuff cluttering it up. (Yes I know I can switch to Dialer One but apart from this one major issue I actually like the default Samsung dialer).
* Wireless - Everything wireless about this phone has issues. May be a function of how thin it is but my experience so far:
1) Phone - Much improved after the latest firmware updates but data connection can take a while to latch on when moving out of WiFi coverage and sometimes just drops out for 5-10 minutes at a time for no apparent reason (even when the phone shows five bars in a strong signal area).
2) Bluetooth - The headset I have is not working well at all. Quality seems fine but every few seconds drops out or gets noisy for a second or so. The same headset works perfectly well with the HTC devices as well as with an iPhone.
3) GPS - Sometimes flawless but lock time is definitely a lot slower than the HTC devices. It also has a tendancy to lose lock a lot easier than the HTC devices. Other times it jumps around all over the place before getting a lock. Lots of weird behaviour here.
4) WiFi - Where other phones get weak coverage this one gets none. If you have strong WiFi signals everywhere you use the device this is not an issue. 5 Ghz also performs significantly worse than 2 Ghz.
* Battery life - It appears this phone has only 2 gears. A low gear for phone / SMS / push mail / browsing where battery life is excellent but then kicks into hyper-turbo mode if you use Flash video, games or anything taxing where it burns through battery life in no time. You can easily get through a whole day with power to spare if you stick to only the basic activities but best to use everything else while plugged in.
The reality is even with all these issues, I couldn’t give this device up. The power and speed coupled with the slim form factor and gorgeous screen are just too damn impressive and all the problems pale in significance. I might have had buyers remorse if the HTC Sensation was coming with an open bootloader and a slimmer profile but at the moment I don’t see anything that compares. I’m just hoping Samsung can fix some of the problems I’ve listed in software.

Regarding fixed items at the bottom: you can edit them from within the applications screen.

You can change those - Go to app drawer-> menu -> edit -> and drop the app you wants.

Nice honest and informative post. Most of the issues will hopefully be fixable once we start getting some custom ROMs I'm hoping. Or hopefully fixes direct from Samsung in regards to GPS, WiFi, and 3G. I guess time will tell.

Very puzzling that Sammy would have issues in key connectivity areas on such a high profile phone. Wonder if they''re all antenna related? As you say, hopefully not, and it's all solvable with SW.

C'mon guys - it's not that hard to reorder your homescreens...
Just pinch zoom (helicopter mode) longpress & drag.....

The issue isn't re-ordering. It's changing the default home screen from the left (on TouchWiz) to the middle (As on stock Android / Sense etc)

in the old TW, it allowed users to change the default home screen. I have no idea what happened to the new TW

After my first day with this phone I switched to the the ADW Launcher, Samsung really didn't think the TouchWiz launcher through - not only the default homescreen being on the left, but also the fact that Apps in the drawer aren't sorted alphabetically.

I used to own the Samsung Galaxy Vibrant. It's disturbing that Samsung is still not getting the GPS working right!

My gps works like a charm

I'm on the latest firmware but it's still pretty buggy...
I've tried switching to launcher pro but I still get crash reboots and loss of sound.
Last night I entered the pin and the phone just reboots.
I also loose the clicks on the pin screen. When this happens you have to reboot go get audio back...I tried playing an mp4 video with no sound when it was in this state and it just said unable to play. Of course it worked fine after a reboot...
So pretty buggy at the moment

mine has no bugs or what so ever, after 2 weeks of used i can never compare it to other phones performance either android or iOS,i used both before but this one is simply way above them..

no built in stock music widget was a dissapointment for me as well as the horrible lock screen style and the lag during wakeup..apart from that this phone is really amazing..but touchwiz needs some serious thought...

Agreed that this phone is as speedy and steady as the HTC Desire and iPhone 4 that I have owned. The trick to all these phones is that if you play around too much with settings,tweaks,launchers you are likely to get problems.

I went back to Oreo on my Pixel 2 and here is why...

1) Volume controls, seriously google? what are you smoking? Why is it way more difficult to change my ringer volume then it needs to be? why do I need to change media volume if I'm not actually listening to media?
2) Much more professional UI, if I wanted an iPhone I would buy and iPhone, Google might as well called this update "Apple Pie"
3)Much better notification/quick toggles pull down with sub-menus for bluetooth and wifi. Why did Google remove this?
4) Split screen mode is usable again! (Videos play in split screen too!)
5) No need to worry about an OTA rolling and screwing things up, I like the piece of mind that my phone will stay on the final Oreo update until I feel Pie is stable enough (9.1?)
6) Multitasking is faster (although this can be solved with an adb command, the whole concept is still a downgrade.
7) Pie is not used by many people at all, in fact the number of total android devices running Pie is less then 0.1% of android devices Source: https://developer.android.com/about/dashboards/ - We are essentially beta testers even after the developer previews.... Oreo however is up to nearly 20% distribution.
8) Battery life using Franco's Naptime app for aggressive doze gives me insane battery life, Adaptive battery is pretty useless when you use such a powerful app like this one.
9) Adaptive brightness is awful on Pie
10) My clock is where it has been for the past 7 years on Android phones, this notch thing just needs to die. Google needs to add a boolean value in systemUI for the left clock and assign it a true value for phones with a notch, and false with a phone with no notch. Seriously, do this!!!
Now before you guys come in here bringing up security bulletin updates, it's a fair point but I would just like to say that no security update will save you from being a noob, don't download shady apps, don't connect to unsecured public wifi networks, don't browse shady websites and don't click on everything you see. Much like a PC, you can get the latest Windows updates and anti-virus definitions but if your foolish and browse around unsafe and shady websites and installing shady .exe's your going to get yourself in to trouble and no security update will save you. The best security for Android is your brain.

you sure can, unlock your bootloader and install the latest 8.1 Factory Image from July, then relock your bootloader boot up and disable automatic system updates in developer options and hide the OTA notification by long pressing it.

Oh ok interesting. Maybe I was thinking you cannot downgrade from O back to N. I thought google made changes where you cannot downgrade due to security patches or something.

Oreo just has an overall more consistent experience and mature interface.

I never left Oreo for many of the reasons you listed, after researching Pie a bit.
We're stuck in this kinda bad phase of phones right now: manufacturers are removing hardware features to encourage/require additional accessory purchases and forcing obsolescence (or ~$80 for battery replacements), plus new software seems in a lot of ways to be regressing. I mean, if you have a Kit Kat device laying around, boot it up and I swear you'll wonder what the heck has "improved" since that. Imagine a Kit Kat style firmware running on today's fast RAM and processors, with hardware features - removable battery, sd card slot, headphone jack. Excuse me while I wipe up my drool.
I'm sure there are people that want AI and all that jazz, but I also bet there are plenty of us who want a stable, long-lasting dependable phone, and there just aren't many options for that anymore.

Ticker notifications are the best, and can get improved, there is an app in PS if you want them back.

Couldn't agree more with you guys. Pie is just terrible. I'm so happy to be back to oreo. Unlocked bootloader, back to oreo, relocked bootloader and turned off updates. No need to root, I couldn't get better than this and if I did root I'd lose Google pay which is awesome. No need for xda for a long time. Bye bye!

I admit that the battery was worse on the initial roll out of Pie. But I've stuck with it and this is my battery right now in the November update. I don't have or play any games on my phone though. I'm happy with it.

Yes.
This is not a Samsung device where a minor mistake when modifying your device could screw up your IMEI number..

you can have the best of both worlds. root + unlocked bootloader + still use (most) apps like google pay that otherwise detect such things. all you need is magisk and to flash a custom kernel that disabled the bootloader check (i use flash kernel)

Thanks for your ROM it was probably my most favorite S4 one.

Also went back to 8.1. Only thing I really miss is the smart rotation option in the dock. What makes it worse is there is a bug in 8.1 where if you enable rotation via quick settings, rotate the device to landscape, rotate back to portrait, then attempt to turn off rotation via quick settings again, the first touch input does not actually toggle the setting, need to press again.
My other observations: Fingerprint sensor seems a little slower, charging sound toggle does nothing (known issue).

8) Battery life using Franco's Naptime app for aggressive doze gives me insane battery life, Adaptive battery is pretty useless when you use such a powerful app like this one.

10) My clock is where it has been for the past 7 years on Android phones, this notch thing just needs to die. Google needs to add a boolean value in systemUI for the left clock and assign it a true value for phones with a notch, and false with a phone with no notch. Seriously, do this!!!
Now before you guys come in here bringing up security bulletin updates, it's a fair point but I would just like to say that no security update will save you from being a noob, don't download shady apps, don't connect to unsecured public wifi networks, don't browse shady websites and don't click on everything you see. Much like a PC, you can get the latest Windows updates and anti-virus definitions but if your foolish and browse around unsafe and shady websites and installing shady .exe's your going to get yourself in to trouble and no security update will save you. The best security for Android is your brain.

1) For me it's much preferred, I can always easily control media volume, which I do 9 out of 10 times, personally. I know that You might want to change the ringer to adapt to situation, but it's obnoxious to do it every time, why not leave it on an average setting or turn on vibrate mode for silent, for once a Android phone has a decent haptic feedback.
2) Go buy a Samsung, if You want "unprofessional". In real world it's called simple and intuitive, and Google IMO seems to be doing this even better than Apple ever did.

6) Faster, yeah, but more fiddly, I found the new system more calming and it requires less tapping, and transition between apps and scrolling seemed smoother. But it's not perfect by no means.

agreed 100%. My battery life is so much better now that i'm back on oreo than i was on pie. on pie i had to charge 3 times a day when prior to the 9.0 update, i'd easily make it 24 hours no problem. i lost over an hour of screen on time. was pathetic. i'm done with pixels after this phone honestly; google is such garbage now. also incredibly ridiculous i need to run a modded APK to get night sight on oreo because they won't rollout the new apk to oreo when it's clearly all software that was available on oreo. i'm staying on 8.1 until i get a new phone, and with all the BS bugs of 9.0, i'm def not looking forward to 9.0 touchwiz on my work note 8.

It is very laggy. At least on my phone. C.33 was way better.

I see no differences in performance between both updates on mine

That is weird but expected. Not everyone is getting the same experience on updates. I wonder what is the cause of it

I agree, it is very laggy.
Particularly when unlocked but also when using Google Chrome.
I regret having my phone updated.

Hopefully a new patch is going to come out early next month. Anyway, it's really bad especially if you have it as primary device like me.

No any performance drop after update.

I solved most of the performance issues by formatting data from recovery. Pretty bad anyway

I have done all the updtas till now but it's the first time that i take an update that almost destroying my phone use.
So that the reason i wrote the following for an expensive mobile phone!
So that's what is happening:
All the performance is much slower!
Every few minutes the phone will just lag SEVERELY with big stutters.
When i am playing a game like Last Shelter then the game lags, screen stops scrolling up down or left right for few seconds.
Now i have not Gmail notification no matter what i do!
Many times when i open camera image that i want to photo on my screen is blinking like a Christmas tree!!! Must close camera app and open it again for fixing the problem.
Battery last less for the same use!
I can not write a message correctly, for all aps that i use, at the keyboard because of 1 or more seconds lag write the word and after a while i see the whole word i wrote!
Also i touch letter E and keyboard write the number 3 lag lag lag!
Try to scroll up down at settings menu or firefox or chrome screen reading an article and the screen stops going up or down for a hole second, can not keep reading that way!
Unbelievable update!
REALme i think that's the last time that i buy such an expensive phone from you!

Man I understand the anger and I with you with that.
Anyway, try a couple of stuff to mitigate: factory reset will make things a little bit better, but most of all, go in the process manager and shut down all the processes. This will not solve this garbage of an update, but it will make things a little bit better.

I can Not do factory reset to built up again the phone i need 2 days and i have not so much time. Every time that upgrade a phone you should do factory reset, where realme says that?
Its a flagship phone for REALme i bought it for better performance and better customer support i see none of them.
i have done everything i know till now and nothing solved that seriously problems!

After almost one week of usage I can confirm, this update is a complete BS. The phone is lagging like hell.
I think now this phone is like my old lg g6, maybe worse. And I'm not exaggerating. Very, very disappointed by Realme.

I think the LG g6 is better than the X2 pro with c.34 right now

Just made some tests and I gotta tell you that deactivating facial recognition the phone works better overall. Not fixed by any means, but at least it's smoother and for some reason battery draining is fixed.
Keyboard lags, gaming performance and clunkyness due to touch sensitivity is still there don't misjudge. But at least we can survive untill c.35 or RUI 2.0

Things are getting worse.
4g stops working every day. I need to reset the phone every time to be able to use data outside. Wifi ok.
This is getting ridiculous.
Can I go back to .33? Can I downgrade easily?

I submitted a thread on the c.realme community about that but I don't think it's available as an option. I think the only way is go back to color os 6 and then upgrade to c.33

Let's hope that with realme ui 2.0 they'll sort things out. I give it 1 month to fix this mess (I'm so patient), after that if things get fixed I'll forgive Realme, otherwise I'm going to sell my phone and advice against this sh**.

I've heard the Andorid 11 stable update is behind the corner, so I'll wait.
I do not want to install this update all over again.

Those who updated to OOS Android 12 - Is it still bad?

See title. Thinking again about updating now that we have another update out in C11 (I believe this is the most recent).
Would you if you had to chance to stay on Android 11? Still very much on the fence.

I haven't had the time or energy to do a clean install, so maybe these issues wouldn't show up normally but here is my experience so far:
1. Forcing the hz to be always 120 is no longer as simple and must be reset every boot
2. Also custom dpi must be set every boot
3. Widgets sizes are all off, some too big and some too small.
4. Always on display is forced on, and almost always doesn't turn on for about 20 seconds when taken out of a pocket, forcing a press of the power button.
5. When always on display doesn't show the fingerprint icon (either configured or after a few seconds), fingerprint scanning won't activate
6. Aptx TWS+ simply doesn't work anymore. Defaults to notmal aptx or aptx hd
7. Reply in floating window doesn't function at all
8. Notifications that are unread but still in the drawer don't show up on the lockscreen
The new fingerprint animations are dope though

crDroid 8.4 is running really nice!

There a couple things I don't like. The new animations are good and a change of system sounds/ringtone is nice. The UI is mostly a sidegrade if not a downgrade in utility. I felt the same going from 10 to 11 and now 11 to 12. I guess I will just get used to it.
What I don't like is the horrendous navigation buttons. What idiot at OnePlus thought it would be a good idea to space out the nav buttons an inch apart? Makes reaching my thumb over (and I have big hands) a pain in the ass. It looks stupid as **** too. I had to switch to gesture navigation mode because of this. Also they added crap like shelf and the qualcomm voice thing/quick device connect which are annoying as I couldn't get rid of the notifications. I tried turning quick device connect off in settings and it wouldn't work. had to mute the notification.
Also in recents/multitasking when I hit close all apps it should close all apps but instead it goes back to the app I was using. This is annoying as I developed the habit of closing all apps and shutting of my phone in a clean slate.
I will do a follow up post of bugs as I encounter them

Thanks for the responses guys. It's shocking to me that widely released software has this many issues still. I may just stay on A11 then. I am eyeing the Pixel 7 in Sept/Oct and I'll leave OP behind at that point. It was a good run.
