Hi MaxETHAN,
I'm new here but I've tried a few media players myself recently. Not sure where you are but I've bought two locally and looking at trying a 3rd this weekend.
The first one I bought was from Vision on sale for $69 (currently on sale) called the KT-609. It's an unknown Japanese company that makes it with no site to get data from. At first it had some bugs but I think I caused those myself. LOL. It's only a 1GB memory and 8GB nand. I installed the most updated Kodi apk file on it, not from the Google Playstore, but from the Kodi site itself. I haven't had a problem with it in forever and now use it in my bedroom as a streaming source. Not that my couch isn't awesome to fall asleep watching the big game on, it's more or less sleeping in cause of no alarm clock to wake me up and make me late for work. Oooops. LOL. I've tried apps on it and it works well. I've added a wireless keyboard and mouse and it worked perfectly.
I just recently purchased the Minix Neo U1. I heard so many amazing things about this box. The first thing I did was upgraded the firmware. That was my first mistake. I should of researched it first as some have reported bugs. I've had a lot of problems with Kodi and XMBC crashing a LOT. I mean 20 plus times each! Plus when poking around to see it's options, it freezes up. Even just checking out the apps section it crashes. I'm not sure if it has anything to do with the firmware update but... eh. I'm going to keep playing with it this weekend to see if I can keep the box stable. Right now, I'm not a fan of this box. But that's not to say I will change my mind if I can fix the issues. Sorry to be so wishy washy on this box but..... OH, I added that same wireless mouse and keyboard to it and it froze a lot too. Had to keep unplugging it to reset it.
The third box I'm getting this weekend to try out is the Seiki Media Streaming Box at Canadian Tire. I know NOTHING about this box and even posted here if anyone has any info on it. From the stats I've read on the CT site, it looks smokin good! Plus return features are a HUGE bonus. Like 1 year exchange warranty, if the box dies or has problems 8 months in, you go get a new one. No hassle.
Sorry I couldn't be more help but another option is if you have a laptop with an HDMI output. I've used FreeTelly on my laptop and hooked it up to TVs at friends places who refuse to get an Android box. FreeTelly is basically a special version of Kodi with all the bells and whistles already done for you.
Good luck and please let me and the rest here know what you decided to get and of course, give a review so we can all help each other.
So it seems that now, 7 years after the Xperia Play, that gaming phones are starting to really become a thing. Razer released a "gaming" phone with a super fast display. Motorola released a gamepad mod for the Z line. There have also been a couple others like the Nubia Red Magic and Xiaomi Black Shark, but only the Black Shark has attempted to add any gaming controls to a "gaming" phone, and it was basic at best. Now Asus is jumping into the game and they have the most powerful phone yet!

But not only are the specs high, but it's also set to have a slew of accessories. The main one being a GameVice to give it full gamepad controls. There's a TV mirroring accessory and a desktop dock. There's also a sort of dual-screen handheld accessory, but that will require developer support to take off. There's even a fan cooler accessory. Plus the phone itself has a couple of touch buttons on the edges that can be mapped to work as virtual buttons. All things considered, this looks like the most interesting of the "gaming" phones thus far and potentially a spiritual successor for the Xperia Play, even if the gamepad isn't integrated.

Im really hype for this one. ROG phone will be my next gaming device after Nokia N-Gage QD and Sony Ericsson Xperia PLAY
ok nice and all but still lacks integrated gamepad if i have to carry 2 devices anyway i´ll take my phone and my 3ds..sorry asus, nice try
I see all the other accessories, but the only one I want is the controller. Not the two screens, or the dock, or the tv mirroring...but that controller that grips from the sides horizontally. It's awesome!!!
I agree with your assessment OP, this was the first phone I really saw as a successor to the xperia play. Such a shame it has taken this long.
The thing about the GameVice gamepad is that it's been around for awhile for both iPhone and Galaxy phones. This is the first "gaming" phone to use it, but not the first phone. So if that's all you're looking for, you could get an older model for a much more popular (and at this point, affordable) phone.
While I would love to see another integrated gamepad, I don't feel like that's going to realistically happen. I think some sort of accessory dock or case will be the way it goes. As long as the gamepad portion is easily portable and pocketable, I'm okay with it.
EDIT:
Unless you live in China where Snail still releases gaming phones with gamepads from iReadyGo. There's another that came out last year:

Hmm. All I had seen prior was iphone lightning port connected controllers. Thanks for putting that on my radar!
While shopping around it appeared that in searching for a one-fits-all solution there weren't hardwired controllers for android.
I am about to purchase a new 2019 Shield TV. I see with the latest 8.2 update just announced that the Pro model supports AI 4K upscalingto 60FPS. But not the standard TV model (not to 60FPS). I will only use for watching TV and Movies on either my 4K e-Shift JVC Home Cinema projector, or on a 60" UHD TV. Will not use for gaming. And I am not a sports fan. But I do like to know that I am watching Movies content in their finest quality. Especially when on the big screen with my projector. The Shield will not be used as a Media Server (Plex) so don't require the extra RAM or Storage that comes with the Pro model, or use for USB ports.
So question is - should I buy the Pro model ($100 extra in Australia)? Or will I not get the benefit of 60FPS upscaling (unless gaming) so save my money and stick with the standard TV model? Note: I am buying two, so the savings double!
I'm tried, but not working:
480i50 -> 2160p50 (Unsupported)
576i50 -> 2160p50 (Unsupported)
1080i50 -> 2160p50 (Unsupported)
Hey guys,
I have a doubt, I had a raspeberry pi 2 that broke down, just used it as a multimedia box (kodi and some addons).
at this point I wanted to replace the RP but I was unsure, I will just use it for the same, is it worth investing in the Raspberry Pi 4 or is it preferable to buy an Nvidia Shield Pro?
Thanks
Specifically as a media player, I would search for a used ShieldTV, any flat version (not the cylinder) for ~$100 or so.
I have used Kodi and Steam/GameStream on both rpi4 as well as the 2017 ShieldTV and much prefer the Shield TV for this purpose. The rpi4 just doesn't have the same 'oomph' with 4k videos and game streaming that the older ShieldTV has.
I'm told the 'tube' ShieldTV isn't bad, but isn't as good as any of the flat models, even the oldest 2015 model can outperform the tube, so try to find an old cheaper model.
