Hello everybody.
As per title, I have just found my old Nexus 7 (grouper), which took some time to have its battery full but... Still WORKS!
So, I'd appreciate if antbody can help in doing that.
My N7 is based on crDroidAndroid-7.1.2-20180919-grouper-v3.8.9 and has TWRP 3.2.1.0.
I'd like to go for the latest/best/slim rom available (Lineage OS?...), but I'm open to suggestions. Just consider I'd use the Nexus for basic purposes (internet browsing, emails check...), so I don't need anything full of spec, but (better) light.
I used to flash roms and recoveries, but I'm a bit rusty, so whatever help you can provide me with will be appreciated.
Just search for the most lighweight roms and then search for the one you want with your device nae (on google)
But Ive heard good things about corvus (its a gaming os) said to pack a punch for the buck (its free though) but will make your slow phone faster and more lightweight

First off I want to say that I DID search and I hope I'm not double posting, if so, I apologize.
I recently bought a Nexus 7 for my wife and I, and she's pretty into one or two Facebook games here lately. (Marvel Avenger's Alliance and ZooTown.. or ville.. or something?)
The device is not rooted (yet) and is running standard OS. I downloaded and installed Firefox Beta and Flash, and she directed herself over to FB to test out her games.
They run nowhere near where we were expecting. I'd be lying if I didn't expect it to outclass my desktop, since it's 4 years old, and the game runs a bit sluggish on it, but my desktop runs it twice as fast as the tabet. =\
For a tablet that runs GTAIII on max, the idea that it's having trouble with a Flash game kinda upsets/confuses me.
I am willing to root and put a custom ROM on, I just haven't had time, I currently have a Samsung Epic 1 running CM9 (too lazy to upgrade).
So aside from a new ROM (or kernel, I've got a basic grasp on what THAT does but not 100%) is there something or do/install, perhaps a browser that runs it better? or something along those lines?
Thank you!
PS If I am looking at a ROM/kernel change, any suggestions? I see there's a CM port here, seems good, and I've been using various editions of CM consistently for 2 years now, just making sure I'm not getting comfortable with something when there's better out there
Good day Android world. I am (sadly) a noob trying to (nervously, excitedly) step my game up with a new Nexus 4. I have played around with the stock ROM and my smartphone experience for the last week+ transitioning from an ancient blackberry. Below are my preliminary questions/views based on research that I am posing to the community. Many thanks for your help and patience!
- I want to embrace the customization experience and root/flash accordingly. I downloaded the N4 toolkit from dev 'mskip' and the instructions have been very clear. I am just waiting on the update to the toolkit once my donation posts before I plunge in. First basic question: if I root/tinker and then relock bootloader/flash stock ROM, is my warranty still intact? Can't Google detect some trace/fingerprint of my activity that they can use to void my warranty or does relocking/flashing stock really cover me? Has anyone had a warranty experience tested on this basis?
- Can I use the toolkit to do a full NANDROID backup of my device as-is before any root? It mentions an insecure boot image, but when I run the backup, the code says 'adbd can't be run on production builds.' Any suggestions? I doubt I will use my current phone state, but I would love to have the full backup available (just in case) before I wipe the device during rooting.
- My view on performance optimization based on research and N4 use is that I am probably good with the stock ROM, albeit perhaps deodexed and zipaligned (thanks Android wikia for those definitions!), though I get the impression that the Matr1x kernel will help me get more performance and bang for my buck on battery, since my only gripe thus far is battery as I lean on the cloud extensively for music (mediaserver hits my battery, though still secondary to screen). Does anyone think there is a better battery optimizing kernel than Matr1x?
- If I have a slightly modified stock ROM, i.e. deodexed and zipaligned, will Google still provide me with auto-updates to the ROM/OS on a timely basis as with the pure stock users?
- Do I download the custom/stock ROMs to my PC for all customization? Or can I do customization through the phone directly once root is achieved through an app like ROM Manager?
- It sounds like the phone is still faster on stock ROM rather than at least the CM10.1 option? Are there any other custom ROMs that are stable and allow a superior phone performance than the stock? As I said, I will likely keep stock for now because I believe Google has a good handle on their software, but would love to hear your thoughts.
- I am a little hesitant about the overclocking/undervolting that certain custom ROMs/kernels afford based on a couple threads I have read on long-term hardware impacts. The no-frills CPU option does seem reasonable with the Matr1x kernel though. Can anyone share a configuration (deep sleep, etc.) that they think works best for the N4 battery without compromising hardware integrity/durability? I will dig into this once I flash the Matr1x kernel
- Apps: I like Juice Defender, but my battery improvement on stock seems to have regressed a bit since I switched to Go Launcher EX. Is this the reason? Maybe the Switch widget?
Sorry this is so long. Thank you for your time and willingness to help!
I have been a Galaxy note user since two years and after my screen broke i decided to try the nexus and i am loving it. I am used to flashing roms frequently on my note.
I flashed custom roms on my note to improve my user experience and two years later i still havent found inner peace.
Forgive my babbling. But i want to know should i flash my nexus 4 too?
I am pretty much satisfied with the device .
I am getting 4.5 hours of screen on time. Can i improve it with any combination of rom and kernel.. Also i am noticing that my data is being used continuously by OS services (i have no apps with sync enabled.no fb,no messenger etc etc). Is that normal?
I found the audio good enough but will the audio mods available make it better?
Do any of you use pie controls?(i hate the space used by the navigation bar while reading an ebook)
Currently the rom i have my eyes on is aospa by molesarecoming..
Any interesting mods i should know about?
P.S: I am on 4.3 now so any link to a proper guide for a nexus noob like me would be helpful.
Thank you in advance for any help i might recieve.

Hey I came from the S3 recently and ended up rooting my nexus within 2 days because I missed the customization. I was running Illusion before on my S3. It was awesome! My data toggles between 3G and H+ depending on what i'm doing. I think 3G is like an idle state You don't have to flash a custom ROM if you don't want but I heard kernels are a big help. The one I've been hearing a lot is this one.
I flashed bean stalk but I might try another ROM soon. The one I flashed has a few issues so maybe I just got a bad flash. Who knows lol.
Here is the guide I followed to root my Nexus. It worked great. I just flashed CWM as well.
Hope that helps!
Thanks,
Indian!
So has your battery life improved?
I don't care much about customizations. I just don't want a scenario where i have to flash every other week for some reason.
There is some Much dev activity here i am confused.

With the custom ROM it has seemed to improved. It's hard to tell until I get back into the work week. I'll get back to you in a few days lol.
Reagrdless, I think at least gaining root access wouldn't be a bad idea. That way you'll always have the option.
Thanks dude.. Do inform me. Meanwhile i am going through all the threads and posts trying to figure out which rom to flash.
Jai Hind.
Hi. Just wondering if you guys could update me on which ROM would be the best to go for to revive a couple of old nexus' for the kids to use for browsing, YouTube and a few games
I've hunted around a fair bit and settled on a 4.4.4 index build followed by mkernel a69 then upsated to faux123 kernel for tweaking??
Or are there any gems I'm missing. Maybe a install and forget ROM?
Thanks in advance
Sam
I still have my old 7 running, but compared to even older phones I still keep here its a pain to use, especially with games.
I think the lack of RAM (1GB is installed only) is the issue and this cannot be improved.
I'm thinking of making some decent use by using it as a web radio player - but I kind of lack the use for one.
I really liked the size for browsing the web, but it has become too slow for me.
However I will try this now:

maybe it proves me wrong
I was able to reimage mine from the 5.0.2 (or whatever the highest stock os was) to the better-running 4.4.4 by following a video on youtube from mojolevel.
Hi, i just bought a second hand Nexus 10. I realy like it and for me had been a step up from an old asus tablet. Im using it for youtube, Netflix, NLziet(dutch TV app) and web browsing.
It came with RR OS V6.2.1 20181006 Based on Android 8.1
But what is the best smooth running rom with good battery life. I dont care for NFC or the camera but i like it as close to stock android as possible.
I see there are Lineage 16 and 17 roms but ive red in the comments that people are not really happy with it. And although i think its great that those guys make all those roms i never had a good experience with it. (on my Galaxy A3 2017)
So what is the best (mostly stock) ROM with the best performance and battery life (at least Android 5, i need it for a TV provider app) And why?
Ill try to make a list and name the pro's and con's so other people can use this information.
I'm asking for the same question
Used Nexus with stock - want the best(performance and battery life) rom out there, don't care much for minor things as NFC - as it will be used for Netflix/Youtube etc
Looking for fastest and stable rom that speakers and 3.5mm plug is fully working - don't want gapps so I'll get the best from its battery!
