[Q] T-Mo Galaxy Tab Overseas?

Have been dead-set on getting a Tab for a while now, and since Christmas is coming up I'm considering having my family in the states send me a T-Mo Galaxy Tab.
I've been reading over the threads on getting voice unlocked on the T-Mo models. Voice isn't a MASSIVE issue for me, since I use text messaging 99% of the time anyway, but it would be a nice feature to have. I can wait for that though, so it's not a deal-breaker.
The one thing I would really hate to be without would be 3G. My local provider (Vodafone New Zealand) uses UMTS as well, but without AWS. Both T-Mo and VFNZ use 2100Mhz, but T-Mo uses 1700Mhz and VFNZ use 900/1800Mhz. If it's just a matter of ROMs, I'm sure that wouldn't be too much of a problem as eventually the local carrier stores will start selling it, but at the moment the only places I can find it for are importers (and they're charging ~1000USD).
Advice? How likely am I to be without 3G? How likely to be without phone support? And do I have any alternatives that don't involve paying nearly twice what a US model costs?
Your best bet would be At&t's (USA) version of the Galaxy Tab with Quad band GSM.
This is from Samsung's website:
Quad-Band GSM (850/900/1800/1900MHz);
Tri-band UMTS (850/1900/2100MHz) & Wi-Fi
http://www.samsung.com/us/mobile/galaxy-tab/SGH-I987ZKAATT-features
There are ways around the voice capability, though it will strictly be over VOIP and not cellular. For example, you can use Skype to call people. As long as you have good wifi coverage, there shouldn't be much difference from cellular.
Your last bet would be to get the totally unlocked and full featured international version of the Galaxy Tab. However, that costs quite a bit more than the carrier locked US versions.

no voice communication =(

according to the specs in gsmarena, there is no voice communication function on this device. this is a sad news for us. anyway, can we enable it with connecting a bluetooth headset?
Although I don't have the specific specs sitting in front of me, the tab will likely have the same restrictions that where placed on the US version of the Galaxy Tab (1?).
It will likely require a European rom with the voice capabilities enabled. This is something that all (for the time being) US tabs are going to have to go through, as I guess samsung feels it is to dangerous to allow us dumb Americans to hold it up to our ear and talk (WHO DOES THAT ANYWAY?!)
Personally, I have flashed a new rom and kernel to my galaxy tab (TMOUSA) and use it as my phone (HD2 sim card w/voice+data) and after about another week of testing will be canceling my data plan on the tab all together. (Or when 3g+voice gets finished.) Seems more logical to cancel the data for the 200 fee than pay for a data line I'm not using for another 1.5 years.
So don't count voice out just yet. If the devs at the 7" tab figure out a 3g+voice modem... I can pretty much promise it will happen for the 10.1.
ps. I checked the post on GSMArena and didn't see anywhere on the specs that it had 0 voice capabilities.
I hope that this nice guy will have voice, I returned my SGT 1 to buy this hopefull within the next two month and want to use it as my primary phone, with a bluetooth headset and the SE Liveview as extention, by specs it should be possible to get voice or am I wrong?
GSM band 850/900/1800/1900 is the normal phone band ?!
well seeing all the dissappointing specs from the xoom, i'd go for this one. however, i am not sure worried about it not supporting voice (the previous had one) but if honeycomb supports it. On the xoom so far i haven't seen a single phone icon or program for calling.
And i really want honeycomb..not crappy ugly old android

The current USA 8.9/10.1 versions that have been announced do not have voice call capabilities. There's no news on European ones other than the Vodaphone UK 10.1v version.

Just pairing a bluetooth headset doesn't magically allow it to make calls over GSM. It has to be a hardware/software combination that's also enabled by the carrier to allow voice calls.
Thank you for your help.. But just today I read on an italian blog that there are hopes that they will allow voice calls: http://technologydroid.blogspot.com/2011/03/galaxy-tab-101-e-89-con-tw-40-posso.html
Well.. I cross my fingers..

What smartwatch to buy? Advice of one of these?

I've been looking to buy a standalone smartwatch. I've looked at Gearbest and found a few models which could be of my interest. Funny enough they are almost identical, but different brand and name.
http://www.gearbest.com/cell-phones/pp_70588.html
http://www.gearbest.com/cell-phones/pp_265319.html
http://www.gearbest.com/smart-watch-phone/pp_141990.html
Year they are identical, but I think they could be of a lower quality than their counterparts.
Do any of you own one of these and could give me an advice?
Biggest problem with that watch is that it will be limited to 2G in the US. It does not have the right frequency bands for T-Mobile's or AT&T's wcdma network. Phone call functionality may work but running streaming apps like Pandora, Stitcher, etc. will be very poor.
I've bought a couple of cheap Chinese smartwatches, and they function equivalent to a feature phone. I use it on the occasions when I would otherwise be carrying my flip phone. It is not a substitute for my smartphone.
I live in Denmark and we have 900/2100 3G.

[USA GUIDE] US SmartWatch Users: List your 1900Mhz WCDMA support Watches

Done to save your fellow standalone SmartWatch US shopper's money, time and Loki's inbox.
In order to prevent confusion and misunderstandings, PLEASE ONLY list the watches you have personally tested for and successfully connected to the 1900Mhz WCDMA [HSPA(+)] frequency band and carrier used. If you're not sure how to do this, feel free to PM me.:good:
The current ones I've tested using Straight Talk-ATT and AT&T SIMs:
ZGPAX S8, S99, S6 (+their clones)
FINOW Q1
(beware of DooGee S1, almost all vendors and OEM list 1900Mhz support. Many have been burned on this)
Great to know that S99 3g works on AT&T. Have been thinking about getting one.
Been trying to get info on 3g watches that work with USA carriers without success so thanks for opening this thread. Thanks for this. If not for the sim enabled phone/ 3g feature i don't see the appeal for these watches when compared to Android Wear devices. Of course these are a bit cheaper but then again these are not very refined (gps does not work well, battery does not last etc.) and the software is not polished.
Hope this thread can get stickied.

Looking for an LTE tablet with voice call capability

The closest Ive thus far researched is the mediapad with LTE that can make and receive phones. Issue us none of the LTE bands work on T mobile USA.
Was wondering if anyone would know of a tablet that can accomodate a SIM card and work on T Mobile usa LTE network as well? Most the ones I see are data only.
Thanks.
I would have thought the US version of the Mediapad m3 would support T-Mobile LTE?
Anyway, have a look at the Galaxy Tab S2 LTE. It should...
Edit: nevermind, you asked about Voice. S2 LTE doesn't do voice other than VoIP.
A little outdated, but the Sony z3 compact tablet does voice calls and should be T-Mobile compatible.
How about the z4 ? US version. Xperia Z4 Tablet Sgp771us/B 1303-5541
Sent from my SGP771 using Tapatalk
does the mediapad m3 support rogers/fido? I'm on the same boat I have the killer $15/3GB tablet plan from fido looking for a tablet to put the sim in
I bought the Z4 LTE tablet and it works. The version is hk Chinese international model that has voice enabled. I don't think the USA spec has the dialer. All works except for volte. Since it's not t mobile provisioned bull****.
To see if phone or tablet works with carrier
You need to go to this site. WillMyPhoneWork.net Anyone else find one that has spec's like this that will work with T-mobile. That's what I thought I bought. When I purchased mine Amazon had it in the spec's as haven't voice phone...
With T-Mo the best you'll get is H+. I have been using this tablet with AT&T and all I get is H+ in Chicagoland but it is acceptable although I have issues from time to time where I have to reboot to make a call. The issue is that this tablet does not physically have the LTE bands that the US uses for LTE. Sucks because otherwise this is a great tablet/phone. Of course I have the international model BTV-DL09
