Aftermarket Android Unit with Apple CarPlay - Android Head-Units

Hey everyone. I recently picked up an aftermarket Android Auto/Apple CarPlay unit for my 2014 Lexus IS. The unit I have is Android 10 with a Snapdragon MSM8953 Qualcomm Processor. I have a couple of issues that I need help with.
The unit connects to my phone through Bluetooth but as far as the hotspot goes, it doesn’t connect at all. Z-Link needs a hotspot connection and my unit doesn’t automatically turn it on for my phone to connect to.
Basically the same as #1 but my Bluetooth doesn't connect and when I do connect it, the hotspot automatically starts up and I have internet connection. So it's a hit or miss when it comes to Bluetooth connecting or hotspot connecting. One connects but the other doesn't. Vice versa.
I’ve noticed in many other peoples Z-Links, in its settings they have the option to “Connect Automatically”. I’m not given that option at all. Is there any sort of thing I can do to make Z-Link start automatically? Rather than having to press the application every time I start the car?
I am assuming that once I figure out how to open the z-link application automatically, both issues 1 and 2 will fix each other.
I appreciate the help! Thank you!

Hy. I had the same Problem with the same Unit in the same Car. I ordered a "only DATA sim for tablets" from my Provider and installed it on the internal sim-slot from the Unit, and my Problem was gone.
The Unit himself can not handle Thethering (also named as Hotspot) with a Cellphone AND the (Carplay-Anroid Auto) Connection to the Unit.
(BT is only to handshaking in the first step but then wlan is used to use Android Auto or Carplay function of this Unit)

SWM8802 Bluetooth settings missing

Hi,
I've just purchased one of these head units for my car. I can connect my phone to it via Bluetooth just fine for calls and music, but I want to connect the head unit to my ODB2 bluetooth dongle so that I can create a Torque dashboard for it.
However, when I go to the general settings, Wifi is listed but Bluetooth is not. I've searched and searched but there is no way for me to connect the head unit to a Bluetooth device. I've tried various third party apps that claim they are able to enable Bluetooth and connect to devices, but they all just seem to hang when I try to enable Bluetooth. Tried a system reset too, but that Bluetooth option is still missing from the settings menu.
Please can anyone help?
G
I'm also interested in knowing this. Torque doesn't seem to detect my bluetooth ELM327 at all. I also attempted to connect a USB-based ELM327 module, and Torque seems to detect it, but it doesn't work beyond that, and the headunit gives me a low-power warning light.
Hi did you get anywhere with this I have the same problem can't get Bluetooth options to show
I have exactly the same problem. I'm running a PX5 unit from Witson. Custom built for a Koleos. MCU is not a standard MTC device. I have no bluetooth option available in the settings and the stock bluetooth app does not display any search option whatsoever. It seems that it broadcasts itself for other devices to detect it but you can't search for devices. Seems like they may be handling the bluetooth via the MCU directly and not via android which is strange because they openly claimed that this device was compatible with the OBD II dongle that I purchased. They even shipped it in the same package. Will keep looking and post if I find anything.
I had the same problem with a different Chinese head unit. Solved by buying a WiFi ELM327 dongle which connected fine with the head unit's built-in WiFi.
Update to my earlier post...I managed to get mine working over BT with the WITSON unit. In the end I had to disconnect my phone completely and reboot the unit. Then I found a search option on the dialer page. Searching found the OBD II module and I was able to pair with it. After I was paired with it I was able to add my phone again and both can run in parallel. I have not been able to test much but it seems like this continues to work until the unit goes into a deep sleep and shows the startup logo again. If that happens then I need to go through the learning process again. Meh...
Hi friend, just a question, in the dialer where did you find the search option I cant find it in my android radio??
If you have the swm 8802 you cannot connect to obd2 this requires bluetooth 4 and the 8802only support bluetooth 2
Always Connect ODB First
The ODB readers are a tad picky but they connect using the same menus as any other BT hardware (headset, speaker, etc). First, turn on the car ignition, do not start.
2. Make sure no other BT equipment is connected to the head unit or even on & near by.
Next, place the head unit in searching/Discovery mode and then & only then plug the ELM BT Module into the car ODB II Port. Most cars must be 96 & newer. 95 GM with for the plug but won't work. They're usually ODB 1.5, don't ask, your screwed.
Finally wait for the module to pop up and ask for the code, it's 1234 not 0000.
After your paired, THEN open Torque and let it connect. Don't start the vehicle till the car icon stops flashing.
You should be good to go from then on. If you ever have problems after that. Make sure the app is totally closed, force stop and then follow this procedure again.

Mine connected no problem. Did it just like I do on my phone. I just got mine too though. Could be an update maybe
the original question wasn't answered and I have that problem too. I don't have a Bluetooth discovery/search option anywhere. the small bluetooth-like icon on the main panel just changes the color of the leds.
so can't connect new phone. although Bluetooth seems to be working, since an older phone, already paired, is still working.
Following this as my head unit is same. Theres no blietooth menu/option but it connects to a phone.
Ive tried a third party bluetooth manager but all that says is bluetooth disabled by admin??
A fix
That happened to me trying to add and ODB2 bt dongle. I had to use the app for bluetooth linking provided by the head unit. When I purchased the unit, I changed the bluetooth discovery and pairing code to 0000. Well, changing it to 1234 allowed me to add the ODB dongle.
I saw it on a YouTube video, and well, it worked for me. (And no, no native bluetooth option, came disabled for my unit as you said)
Hope it works for you too.
same problem with me
Hi sir did you found solution for this problem. I also have this problem with my native bluetooth. when i turn open system setting bluetooth missing. i try to open using shotcut and found shotcut to turn on bluetooth but when i turn on. it do nothing.
I can play music, make call using bluetooth app provide from head unit. Problem is i cant use it with OBD2 . same with your statement this bluetooth only stream signal to other. this Head unit cannot find other bluetooth.
Kindly please assist me. did this head unit still have hope to turn on native bluetooth or not. I still search many post regarding this issue. But issue bluetooth like this not many discussion.

Change the pair code in the bluetooth custom app provided, to 1234 and try again.
I had this happen and I think I figured it out.... in factory settings there's an option to choose bluetooth connect automatically or with pin. I checked with pin and was able to pair. I think the options are reversed in the settings
I have the same problem i can't connect to the android 7.1 car head unit any more , the bluetooth setting is missing , the wifi settings appear but bluetooth doesn't appear any more
Anyone can help me to fix this issue please ?

I bought a bluetooth usb adapter and I can't select it on the system. I think this would be the way out, but we need to replace the driver inside android. Does anyone have any ideas?

I have a Teyes Spro with the same Bluetooth issues as most on this post describe. Did you find an answer to your usb adaptor to solve the Bluetooth problem? I was told to add a line to the config.txt file but cannot locate where to access that to add it.
Bought a Teyes Spro headunit and I have a problem with Bluetooth discovery on my obd II and tpms modules. Does anyone know what is in the "Developer" tab? It is password protected not accessible. The 168 factory access code does not work for it. Anyone know the password?

Joying Head Unit (4GB, PX5 Octa Core) - Bluetooth Tethering

Hi All,
Recently purchased and installed a Joying head unit (4GB, PX5 Octa Core) (link to product)
As this head unit runs android I am trying to tether the mobile data on my android mobile over to the head unit via the bluetooth tethering function. Problem is I dont think its working. Does anyone have any experience with this or know how to get it working?
Steps:
On the mobile, make sure its connected to mobile data
On mobile, turn on bluetooth tethering
Pair mobile and head unit via bluetooth
Still no internet access
Can you access data via hot spot? Make you mobile device a wifi hotspot and connect the headunit to your hotspot.

Yeah I tried this and it works fine. I just though it be better to use bluetooth tethering seeing as the phone is already hooked up to the head unit via bluetooth. Using the WiFi hot spot option just adds another process to the mix.
Because Joying remove a lot of the standard android setting I was thinking there might be a way to access the default android settings again to be able to play around with bluetooth properly. While writing this thread up however I did email Joying about the ability to bluetooth tether and their response was:
"Our head unit can not support Bluetooth tethering"
Hi, I am trying to achieve the same solution however I do not think it's possible. My understanding is that the bluetooth connectivity allowed by the hardware in the head units doesn't cater for the 'full stack' of bluetooth functions, so we're stuck with telephony and audio only with no data transfer.
I would *really* love to be corrected though! It would be great if it could be solved by software alone.
Failing that, could a bluetooth USB dongle work to provide full BT support?

I consider this a bug. It did work on the Sofia 3GR units on Android 6.0.1.
It (currently) does not work on the Android 8 PX5 FYT units (like the OP has as well). Can't say anything about the QD units.
Well that gives me some hope at least.
I did note at least 3 'Bluetooth' apps running on my device (that I've been playing with since my previous post).
Perhaps a custom mod may be the answer...
Sorry proto, I've had about five units and all the same. You're right and it sucks. I don't think it's a big as I've come across it many times and only in a few eBay postings did the seller actually specify it has a general bluetooth connection. Otherwise toy even have to buy their obd to get that to work

Ok thanks for the replies. Hopefully it will be fixed with a firmware update in the future or something.
Is there are any news about this Bluetooth tethering?
I am really interested because my WiFi is really really slow...
I saw that some Bluetooth function are missing, like the possibility to remove paired device or select Bluetooth tethering.
It’s highly unlikely Joying will fix the Bluetooth, they would need to produce a seperate rom with normal BT configured and u would not have access to the Joying BT app.
Currently Joying route all Bluetooth communication via a service called btlink, from there it goes to the joying bluetooth app.
Joying have fundamentally changed the way the Bluetooth is configured so it functions with only their software.
All these headunit manufactures do this to the BT so it functions with their software and they never offer a fix

Remember that it only worked with a HACK. Joying intentionally disables this functionality.
Bluetooth information
Init.sy.rc
Service blink /vendor/bin/blink
Init.connectivity.rc
Chmod 0666 /dev/tty (This should be tty00)
Now I have modified mine but I think the system/vendor/ect/Bluetooth/bt_vendor.conf is set to
- UartPort = /dev/tty00
Blink is interacting with /dev/tty
Android system is interacting with /dev/tty00 ?
Hopefully all the information is correct as I have modified my unit lots to try give back the Bluetooth to the system and I didn’t keep many notes.
But in short the the system is trying to access the Bluetooth on the wrong Uart port, where as the blink is attaching to the tty device, allowing the joying software to work.
This prevent the android system & apps interacting with the Bluetooth.
Also this is the test app I have been using to try to get it to allow permissions to turn BT on, but it get denied every time
Bluetooth Discovery : Bluetooth LE Scanner
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.manjul.bluetoothsdp
i have the 10.1 american version.
if i remember correctly, bluetooth has an issue when your using it as a "media" access point
i think the bluetooth is set for A2DP... probably physically somehow.

Did you try to create a symlink like
Code:
ln -s /dev/tty /dev/tty00
And is it indeed tty00 or tty0?
Did you give the scanner root access?
Bumping this for a slightly odder issue. I'm trying to connect my Joying stereo to a Hondata KPro ECU, it sees the ECU but refuses to link to it in settings, rendering apps like Hondata or RealDash useless, so in turn I'm using a crappy $20 tablet until someone can show how to fix this BT issue.
Joying was no help other than to tell me to buy their OBDII adapter, which I did, but LONG story this is a 2008 Honda engine in a 91 MR2 that has no OBDII port. I've bought an OBDII port off eBay and tried using pinouts from the ECU to hack together an OBDII port but no luck.
Having it via Bluetooth would be easier, it sees the KPro, so there must be a way.
same problem
dont buy this joying head unit

I bought a Joying Px5 9inch Octa8, And i need some advise guys

a. I am a normal user, mainly need to use Bluetooth for phone calls, GPS maps and spotify. I realized that the caller apps does not allow me to put short cuts (quick dials) to my favorite numbers. Is there any way I can do it?
b. It is rather useless to have a headunit if there is no internet connection. I have my HP for WiFi tethering, and also a WiFi dongle. Both doesn't work well because the head-unit can only detect WiFi upon restarting the system. I am not sure why, If I were to shut off my engine, start it up again. The system will not be able to detect WiFi.
c. My head-unit comes with Zlink (apple car-play). Okay, this is funny. I connected my iPhone to the head-unit, but upon connecting to zlink, the Bluetooth connection is cut.
d. I intend to get the ELM327 so that I can see those cool gauges. But can the head unit support both ELM 327 and my iPhone Bluetooth simultaneously.
e. Lastly, do I really need to root it to get it perform? I am not good in all these.
For advice pls.
MCU: 2019-01-23
Can someone give me some advise pls
Hi Tweakmax,
i have the same version as you have. i bought mine from Isudar and is currently installed in my skoda.
A)I'm also not verry happy with the dialer app. First of all, the app is called bluetooth and has a bluetooth icon while it is a dialer. The contacts showed up after 2 hours!! The default launcher does not support custom widget elements such as a shortcut to person. I suggest installing an other launcher.
b) I'm not expierencing this problem.
C) My usb ports don't work. How did you manage to install car play? I have android Auto. By the way. Why do you want to use car play if you have an android head unit?
D) I can confirm that the ELM327 is working. Make sure to unpair the OBD2 dongle from your phone. Then unplug/plug the obd2 adapter.
E) root is not required. You can install other launchers and install APK's.

PX5 (rk3368) Android 9 - Wifi Issue

I have a generic PX5 head unit from Ali Express which I've had for a couple of years.
I've managed to sort out most issues but have not managed to find a solution to a Wi-Fi issue.
I use a 4g USB dongle for mobile data.
The Wi-Fi in the head unit has to be started manually every time I turn the car ignition on. this is despite having the unit set to automatically connect to available networks.
Is there a setting I have missed or is it normal to have to switch on the wi-fi manually every time I use the car.
In input gratefully received
Thanks
Peter

Connect more than 1 iPhone to Zlink possible?

Hi,
I just got my Android Head Unit installed in my car with Zlink to use Carplay. I am an experienced computer and iPhone user but have never worked with Android or an Android Head Unit. Can I and if so how do I connect a second iPhone to Zlink and Carplay?
only one device can be displayed

I know that because I have Carplay in my other car. But both I and my wife use this car and I can't find where/how to connect her phone too? When Carplay opens there are no such options so it must be in Zlink somehow?
that is in the iphone carplay settings and the radio automatically connects to the last paired device
I understand that but where do I add the second phone? Shall I turn mine off and let Zlink look for a new phone?
I have a problem that people can barely hear me on the phone. The Carplay volume was also very low but that I managed to fix with Siri talking and at the same time increase the volume on the steering wheel. Also it takes a very long time before Zlink / Carplay starts when starting the car. The guy I bought it from asked me to reset the unit.
First time I used it I connected wifi in Zlink but now on a video i saw the guy connected hot spot in Android. Which way should I use now after resetting the unit?
And thanks for your help!
you = I understand that, but where do I add the second phone? Do I turn mine off and let Zlink search for a new phone?
=yes, cancel your pairing and let the second phone connect
Ok got it. Can I make other settings in Zlink by opening the app?
not much
You forgot to tell me where I should connect my wifi? To Android system as hot spot or in Zlink option? My unit has a SIM card installed if that makes any difference?
The Bluetooth as I understand I will connect on OEM phone app?
carplay works with wifi and bluethoo transmission the sim is only to give internet to the android system (google maps etc) not for carplay actually carplay is on your mobile and mirrors your radio
the rest already in google

So I should connect both Bluetooth and wifi to Zlink / Carplay?
I don't remember any option to connect BT on Zlink?
I found out today that people can't hear me using Carplay phone because the Android unit uses a built-in microphone on the screen and not Mercedes OEM.
Is this normal?
