System update with unlocked bootloader without on system updater - OnePlus 8 Pro Questions & Answers

For some reason the section "System update" in the phone settings is greyed out. I do not have a custom recovery and no access to adb in the recovery to sideload my system rom.
I tried adb sideloading it on my device while it is turned on but it fails with:
* cannot read 'OnePlus8ProOxygen_15.E.36_OTA_0360_all_2105181828_5d18f419b.zip' *
Before it was failing with another error message I can not remember.
Is there a way to install the stock rom? I am rooted and have access to the root shell with magisk.

have you tried this?

as for the system update being greyed out im not sure. I dont know if having a device that is not certified would do it or not, but you can check that in your play store settings in the about setting, then at the bottom. Or possibly from an app maybe

check if this is disabled com.oneplus.opbackup

apparently it can also be one of your magisk modules that broke it. go through them one by one to find the culprit

if you still want to go back to stock rom you will need the msm tool for your device.

Be best to provide your OS, device and variant.
Sounds like it's been locked down.

revert to stock

I was trying to root my v20 and its not working correctly and would like to start from scratch. i seen some stock tmobile v20 tots. It says something that you cant flash them. Is that correct? no way to return to stock? using the tots
Right now there is no way to flash a tot. We are missing the V20 specific dll file for the flash tool called LGUP.
Do you know anyway to remove all the root files, exploit stuff so I can restart the process
What part did you get stuck on?
Somehow during the last part where recovery is installed. Then the no encryption and installing supersu. I got twrp installed. But I flash both the no encryption and special su and root does not take. It says along the lines using to installer too can't reinstall the exploit or something like that
Idk if this helps but I thought the same thing until I installed nova. For some reason the LG launcher did not show supersu
Hope it helps
Have you tried running the commands manually in ADB?
No I haven't yet. Would restoring the LG recovery help?
I tried manual adb command it just says waiting for device

OP5 fails security check

Hello,
I have two apps that fail some security check and doesn't want to launch on a brand new OnePlus5
One banking app tells me I'm rooted
And a game says I have rooted or modified device.
I did not root my device. It's like out of the box.
I have turn off USB debugging and developers options.
I have been told to install Magisk to hide root but my phone is not rooted and it seems I have to root it in order to install Magisk. Which I don't want.
How is it that those app fail security check?
What can I can do to pass it?
Thank you guys
Lock the bootloader

ROFL omg incomplete info if you're not aware.... IF you relock the bootloader make sure you do not have a custom recovery installed. you MUST have STOCK recovery BEFORE you relock the bootloader. If you lock the bootloader with custom recovery, you'll brick your phone.
With that said, you should be able to install Magisk and pass the safety check. If not, then the Magisk dev with apps are failing and he may fix that in an update.
had the same situation, because I used supersu for root before I switched to magisk.
I solved it this way:
1. run unsu-script (https://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=63615067)
2. flash magisk
3. hide it for the banking app, playstore and google service framework
4. reboot
5. done

If you unlocked the bootloader you will fail security check as other member said. If your bootloader is locked you might want to go into the Play Store settings and see if your device shows up as certified. If not go into settings / applications and clear all data for Play Store then reboot your phone. When you log back into the Play Store the status should change to certified.

"Installation Failed" MI A1 OTA UPDATE

Ok, why the f. did I get "installation failed" when installing OTA following this guide?
I followed the guide, I hit uninstall and "restore images" in magisk, it restored the stock image and when I tried running feb ota, I got "installation failed", why?
Also, why did my device get in a bootloop by just fully uninstalling magisk?
I had unlocked bootloader with systemless root, with no TWRP, never booted it, never flashed it, only fastboot commands I ran were oem unlock and boot patched_boot.img. I never touched system partition (on purpose), never installed anything other than a bunch of magisk modules, safetynet was always working, if it matters.
PSA FOR GOOGLE VISITORS:
Do not fully uninstall magisk after you get "installation failed", I got a bootloop and had to flash flash_all_except_storage.bat from mi a1 stock rom using miFlash (bottom right to select it, don't flash_all if you want your data).
Same thing happened with me... what exactly i done was...booted into patched boot.img using fastboot and after that used magisk manager and installed camera2api and just substratum.....but when i got notification of feb update... I tried to uninstall magisk manager using complete uninstall option....then restarted manually then it booted up and then suddenly shuts down and started showing a black screen with Android logo with (No command) written below it......to recover from this condition i again tried to use the same fastboot method for booting into patched boot... after which i was able to use my mobile.... normally but I'm not able to install feb update.... I'm downloading the complete stock rom.....but if there's any other method which can be efficient so plz inform....

Just like he said, yeah using Magisk means waving bye to OTA updates. This was the exact problem I faced where I installed Magisk module without TWRP for the joys of using substratum. Installating magisk won't taper your system, they said, you would still get the update, they said. Well NEWS FLASH for those, installing magisk tampers your system partitions and you are in a dreadlock situation where you can't do ****. People claim there are work arounds like you linked but no one has actually confirmed using it. And the worst part is that if you try to install the update even after uninstalling Magisk , it will still give you the error. How do I know? tried it, doesn't work. The only option which was left to me was to download the official Oreo ROM from MiUI global and flash it using MiFlash.
Flashing the boot.img from stock rom might solve the problem. If not, flash the stock rom using MiFlash with save user data option.

Does the 'save user data'-option also preserve the apps installed?
Thanks!

Yes it saves all user data including settings, apps and app data
I had the same issue. I used the tool linked below and the steps:
- Unlock Bootloader
- Flash Stock ROM
- Download ROM (and wait for that to happen)
- Keep UserData (and wait again)
- Lock Bootloader
After that I was able to install the update, then re-install Magisk and camera tweaks.

The guide mention in OP had worked for me for at least 3 updates including the major one from nougat to oreo with any issue. Be aware that mounting system partition as read AND WRITE brakes OTA. You don't even need to change anything just mounting it will brake it. That could easily happen using a root file explorer or a hosts file based add blocker if Magisk is not properly set (systemless hosts support toggle in Magisk settings).

SM-G531M - FRP can't be disabled when logged into Google

Hi! I have flashed successfully a stock rom of Android 5.1.1 on this device (SM-G531M) using the latest Odin. I enabled the developer options and then OEM Unlock and USB Debugging. Flashed TWRP, everything great. Once TWRP was on my device I installed Magisk following the instructions and no problem. So having root access and TWRP on my phone, really happy that no problems came up on the way, I decide to log into my Google account to update and get some apps and here is when the problems appear. I checked that OEM Unlock is still on and reboot my phone to find that FRP is on and can't boot because of root (can't get in recovery either because TWRP is not the stock recovery), so I flash the device again with the stock rom and find out that I can't remove FRP lock to flash TWRP again. I try removing my google account and FRP is off, so I have to choose:
a) root access and TWRP recovery or
b) Google Account and get new apps or update the ones I have.
Nowhere I looked I could find any answer or anyone having this issue. Can someone tell me what am I doing wrong? I really have no idea why this happens, is a Google update that does this to everyone or what's going on?
Thanks in advance!

Just want to install one app as System app...

I have a stock xt1766, which I use primarily as my kid's Pokemon Go phone. That app is often updated to detect root (despite Magisk), so I need to remain unrooted. But I need to install one app as a system app.
Is there a way to do this without rooting, or, if I do root the device and install my system app, is there a way to de-root and retain the system app? I recall there was a method called "kingo root" or something, but not sure if it's trused of effective on this device...
Currently on NCQS26.69-64-5, getting prompted to install NCQS26.69-64-8.
Thanks for any advice!

You might be able to root with magisk, install your system app, then use fastboot to flash the stock boot.img. which could unroot your phone. But it may not be able to boot because of dm verity or even forced encryption. Kingroot will not work on this device, and is most certainly not to be trusted since it sends your device info to unknown Chinese servers. The only way to successfully unroot, that I know of, is to flash the stock firmware. Which, of course will remove any system changes.
So, short answer, not likely.
