I present to you: Kali NetHunter for the Xiaomi Mi A3 on LineageOS 18.1
Kali NetHunter is an Android ROM overlay that turns an ordinary phone into the ultimate Mobile Penetration Testing Platform.
The overlay includes a custom kernel, a Kali Linux chroot, an accompanying Android application, which allows for easier interaction with various security tools and attacks, as well as a client to the Kali NetHunter App Store.
Beyond the penetration testing tools arsenal within Kali Linux and the Kali NetHunter App Store, NetHunter also supports several additional classes, such as HID Keyboard Attacks, BadUSB attacks, Evil AP MANA attacks, and much more. For more information about the moving parts that make up NetHunter, check out our NetHunter Components page.
NetHunter is an open-source project developed by Offensive Security and the community.
~ Prerequisites ~
- Lineage 18.1 - https://forum.xda-developers.com/t/rom-11-unofficial-laurel_sprout-oss-lineageos-18-1.4240953/
~~ Downloads ~~
- NetHunter installer (scroll down for the latest Xiaomi Mi A3 image): https://www.kali.org/get-kali/#kali-mobile
- Magisk – https://forum.xda-developers.com/apps/magisk
- Force Encryption Disabler for Treble - https://www.androidfilehost.com/?fid=8889791610682920239
~~ How to Install ~~
Assuming you have unlocked bootloader, flashed LOS, Gapps, Magisk and still in Linage recovery:
To have encryption disabled, DON"T REBOOT TO SYSTEM YET, but follow these steps:
- Format data if you haven't done before flashing
- adb push and install or adb sideload DisableForceEncryption_Treble.zip
- Reboot to system
- Do initial setup
- Reboot to recovery
- adb push and install or adb sideload nethunter-2021.2-laurel_sprout-eleven-kalifs-full.zip
- Reboot into system, setup or update Nethunter from NetHunter store and do a final reboot
~~~ Notes & Updates ~~~
KeX is working, but for some users, the ROM does a soft reboot when server is started. If the dbus service is running in Kali chroot, soft reboot is gone, but still some users experience camera app crash.
I wouldn't say useless even if there's no phone functions. Not because of Kali or Linux, it's just a pentesting arsenal in your pocket. But no worries, all works. You flash Kali NetHunter on top of Android 11 (LineageOS 18.1 in this case)
Can I install it without disabling phone encryption?
Hello again. It says custom kernel is not supported in Harukey's Lineage Os 18.1 rom. But you built a custom kernel based on that rom. Any problem? Also, are the root and nethunter files deleted when Lineage Os 18.1 is updated? I would be very happy if you answer.
Custom kernel is supported by me. That means, if you have problem, he doesn't support you but I do. It's different what he provides so it's not his responsibility if there's an issue due to the NetHunter patches
Yes, because injection is not supported on any phones with qcacld-3.0 wifi driver. Internal bluetooth is not supported. External bluetooth and wifi is supported, please refer to the compatibility page: https://www.kali.org/docs/nethunter/wireless-cards/
This rom is not for noob... Read with attention first post... If there's something you don't understand... Don't flash. Because the OP have posted a clear and detailed guide. Kaly is first a linux distro, not a common android firmware. If you don't know anything about Linux... don't flash. Obviously It's only my opinion...
If you have followed the instructions and flashed all fine, it should show. What adapter is that? Model and chipset number? Is it working on a Kali laptop/desktop?
Bluetooth-Arsenal is not working I guess. L2ping, Spooftoph and others don't work either. It sends 0 bytes when using L2ping. In Spooftoph software, it just clones the name. It doesn't clone the mac address. What do you think is the cause of the problems?
#####_UPDATE_#####
On this website there are various Nethunter kernel for many devices
Nethunter: build.nethunter.com
- Nightly = Nethunter Kernel (Lollipop, Marshmellow, Nougat)
- KaliFS = Kali Linux Chroot (armhf, arm64, i386, amd64)
- Nethunter OS = Full Cyanogenmod Kali Linux System + Kernel (bacon, angler, flo, hammerhead only)
- RPi 3 Nexmon = Kali Linux Nexmon for Raspberry Pi 2/3
#####_UPDATE_#####
I have installed Nethunter differently, more easily and universal.
Notes:
For External Wifi Adapter you need drivers or a ROM with drivers.
For USB Keyboard or HID Attacks you need a kernel that allows you to do it
Buttons on the NetHunter App sometimes it works, sometimes not, depends on the ROM, or Android version,
ex. RUN on Custom Commands Tab give you an error, probably only on Android 6.0
It should work on all devices, because you do not have to install anything (ROM, Kernel, etc..)
but on some ROMS you may have the error when we're going to create the Metasploit database
I solved it by changing rom.
Tested on S3, S4, S4 Mini, S5, all with different ROM and version.
Tested on CM12 CM12.1 CM13.
My friends helped me to test it with other phones.
Personally I use it on Resurrection Remix 5.7.0 - Android 5.1.1 - working buttons.
Installation:
Install Busybox.
Download a Nethunter ROM: Offensive Security WebSite
Open the zip.
Go to /data/app
Install all apps on the zip.
With a Root explorer go to /data/data/com.offsec.nethunter/files/scripts
Copy all the files.
Paste into /system/bin
Open the Nethunter App.
Go to the Kali Chroot Manager.
Install the "Minimal Chroot"
After, open Terminal Emulator
Choose "KALI"
Run these commands:
apt-get update
apt-get upgrade
apt-get dist-upgrade
apt-get install kali-linux-nethunter
You are ready
For VNC
Installation
apt-get install tightvncserver
Run VNC Server
vncserver :1 -geometry 1280x720 -depth 16
Arguments:
:1 (Display 1,2,3,4 etc..)*
-geometry (Resolution width x height)
-depth (16, 24, Color Depth, use 16)
Connect to VNC
Open AndroidVNC
Alias: Kali Linux
Password: The password you set before
Address: 127.0.0.1 or your IP
Port: 5901 (Depend on display ex. Display 2, Port 5902)*
Username: root
For Metasploit
Initialize the database
msfdb init (you must initialize it every time if you do not set "Start at boot" in the Kali Services Tab on Nethunter App)
Run Metasploit
msfconsole or use setoolkit
Guide created by me .
Respect us, do not use google
Will this work on a S5 Mini?
If you have installed Kali Linux from Linux Deploy, this method will not work, because after, you will have two Kali Linux Chroot installed.
The kernel for your phone does not exist, it is only available for Galaxy S5 (and variants), but if you want to install this, works on all devices with a Custom ROM (AOSP, CyanogenMod etc..).
Do not be confused that you do not have the Kernel, I used Kali Linux for 3 years on the phone without kernel, and I must tell you, now that I have the phone with the Kernel nothing has changed, better a Raspberry Pi (with SSH) on the backpack for Wireless Monitor Mode. (this applies to all)
I hope you will be able to buy yourself a phone where you can install nethunter with kernel. :good:
Kindly help me turn on monitor mode..
Thanks..
Hello , great tutorial but I have one question about nethunter, am I able to install chroot on my external sdcard, and how? Thanks.
Kali Nethunuter VS Linux Deploy which is best ?
I have 2 questions. Is Kali Nethunuter best or Linux Deploy Kali Linux best ? My MT6582 device kernel 3.4.67 neither officially support CyanogenMod nor Kali Nethunuter. I ported CM13 for my Walton Primo S3 Mini device and using it. Has only VPN bug. Now I installed Kali Nethunuter without flashing from TWRP. I didn't use Nethunuter from official site. I just downloaded the apk from GitHub and installed full chroot from the app. But I noticed my device takes longer time to boot than before. It stucks at both splash screen (device & recovery) for many times then boots. But it solves when I remove chroot and Nethunuter. Now my questions are:
1. Why it takes many time to boot than before ?
2. I used Linux Deploy before. My phone doesn't have sd card slot. So it's space almost full. Which is best Linux Deploy or Nethunuter ? Which is best and has many features ?
You must have the Nethunter kernel to enable monitor mode and a external wireless adapter.
Your device is not compatible for the Nethuner kernel.
The best should be Nethunter, for size and functionality, and takes longer time to boot because of kali linux boot, but it should be normal, you just have to wait.
OctOs for OP3 is a WIP. I am not a qualified dev, don´t expect it as bug-free! It has been evaluated as being stable enough to release and i find it suitable for daily use in most cases. While it may be considered stable enough, there may be unknown bugs. The development team nor me is not responsible for any damage to your device or your information.
Team OctOs presents Oct-M.
We maintain a current release record and change-log on our website: http://www.teamoctos.com
Frequently Asked Questions
Q: Is this Android 6 (Marshmallow)?
A: Yes, this is Android 6.0.1
Q: What code is Oct-M based on?
A: Starting with Oct-L, we've rebased OctOs on the CyanogenMod 12 code. Oct-M is based on CyanogenMod 13.
Q: What happened to AOSP?
A: All Android code is based on the Android Open Source Project (AOSP). Under previous releases, we tried very hard to limit the number of "Not from Google directly" repositories that we used. Unfortunately, issues with devices, the need for Code Aurora Foundation (CAF) repositories for Qualcomm devices, and compatibility issues meant fighting code more often than not. We decided that since the code-base for many repositories were the same across most ROMs, picking a starting point to build the user experience on outweighed the desire to craft code from scratch, or fix broken code to make it work with other changes we already had.
Q: Why isn't there XYZ feature?
A: Shoot us a Suggestion if you want to see something added. While we are not going to promise to implement, we will always look into it
Q: But XYZ and all the others have..
A: ROM developers build something they want to use. The ROM developer that includes something they won't run implies less than 100% effort to ensure it does work. As a team, we have similar goals and objectives. If XYZ ROM has a feature you want, and we don't include (or don't want to include), feel free to use XYZ ROM, or build your own custom version of Oct-M.
Q: Superuser or SuperSU?
A: Team OctOs uses SuperSU and is installed automatically.
Bugs:
Bugs happen. Our testers are very good at breaking things, but no where near as good as the rest of the Android public. In order to investigate and fix issues, we need the help of the users who are going to report them. The Android OS has many nifty features to help us in this, but only if we can engage the user to assist us.
Logs, Logcat, and the Android Debugging Bridge (ADB)
Like any other OS, Android has multiple log files that are generated and record the goings-on of the system. As a user, you have two basic ways to view and pull these to send to us. Without the information in the logfiles, there simply is not a whole lot of information to go on.
Log file APKs
Team OctOs recommends SysLog from the Android Market. This application will allow you to selectively pick any (or all) of the system logs, compress them into a .ZIP file, and allow you to save, email, move to your Copy/DropBox/Cloud Storage account, etc.
ADB Logcat
The Android Debugging Bridge (ADB) is a powerful tool available from Google as part of the Android Software Development Kit (SDK). Used for many things, being able to selectively see, in real-time, what your device is doing cannot be downplayed. While there is more setup involved, if you are doing consistent ROM flashing, you really should invest the time to get setup properly to do it.
Install Instructions:
Download ROM and MD5 file, and grab your favourite gapps package
Reboot to Recovery
(Note: Use Reboot to Recovery from Power Menu, Hardware-based boot to recovery, or adb reboot recovery - ROM Manager or similar software is NOT supported)
--- TWRP is the ONLY recovery Team OctOs uses - They do not support flashing on CWM ---
Factory Reset from TWRP
Flash ROM and GApps
mount System
look for /system/priv-app/SetupWizard and delete it
--- sorry for this! it seems like that setup wizard is going to hang up and mess up tings!---
Reboot
* ROM Download
* MD5
Code:
585041059189b4acf5591c8f23e756fd
The Oct-M ROM installation script will automatically wipe /system, /cache, and /data/dalvik-cache. There is no need to do these before or after flashing the ROM unless you are instructed to by your GApps Provider
The foundation of the Android OS is the fact that is it open-source. All code used internally in the creation of Oct-M is available on GitHub repositories. ATM those little changes made to this code to mek Oneplus 3 build isn´t available. But it depends on CyanogenMod device tree. Ef the progress is ongoing i will mek my little code available too
Unless otherwise specified, all Oct-M builds use the device's stock kernel.
Setup went fine here, which gapps did u use?
U can try this ...
flashing both octos and opengapps in the same pass in TWRP mount System then delete?*/system/priv-app/SetupWizard ... Reboot System
Now you have to go into settings to configure your Google Account, but its not a big deal, and you won't even have to do that if you are just flashing a new NIGHTLY.
AOKP-ANDROID OPEN KANG PROJECT
What is AOKP?
AOKP stands for Android Open Kang Project. It is a custom ROM distribution for several high-end Android devices. The name is a play on the word kang and AOSP (Android Open Source Project). The name was sort of a joke, but it just stuck, just like our infatuation with unicorns.
We fork the source code of Android that Google puts out in the open with every major version release, and we then add the magical unicorn bytes (read: we add some of the coolest features that are both useful and make your ROM awesome).
With AOKP, you can generally do a lot more with your device than what you could do with the original firmware that came installed on it.
Why AOKP ?
We were waiting for when you'd ask this.
There are a variety of reasons why a hilly billy Android user, on a bright sunny day, would suddenly start using AOKP and loving it.
For one, AOKP is lightweight. Most OEMs provide a heavy UI layer over Android and have loads of bloatware (i.e. apps that not everyone use every day, but you cannot remove because they're "baked in" by default). Since AOKP is built upon vanilla Android source, it has neither of the above.
Also AOKP has features that you will not find on your stock firmware. You can have a multitude of toggles to quickly flip a lot of your phone's settings right at your fingertips, or you can launch apps quickly from any screen using our Ribbons.
You can change almost each and every aspect of the OS, from its looks to the way it functions, with total freedom. And did we tell you, AOKP helps you make tacos?
# Friendly Notes:
- Which gapps should I install on this rom?
You should flash this one: https://www.androidfilehost.com/?fid=529152257862716774
Otherwise you might face issue as most gapps are not compatible with 7.1.2 yet.Also you should flash setupwizard fix after gapps.Otherwise you might face issues at setupwizard.
- How to root?
Check Post #3
- Can I install this rom on P2c72 variant?
The Kali NetHunter is an Android penetration testing platform targeted towards Nexus and OnePlus devices built on top of Kali Linux, which includes some special and unique features. Of course, you have all the usual Kali tools in NetHunter as well as the ability to get a full VNC session from your phone to a graphical Kali chroot, however the strength of NetHunter does not end there. We've incorporated some amazing features into the NetHunter OS which are both powerful and unique. From pre-programmed HID Keyboard (Teensy) attacks, to BadUSB Man In The Middle attacks, to one-click MANA Evil Access Point setups, access to the Offensive Security Exploit Database... And yes, NetHunter natively supports wireless 802.11 frame injection with a variety of supported USB NICs.
Wow. I have heard about Kali nethunter a lot before. So its available for cancro too now? Can someone provide us with screenshots (I would love to see he interface).
Is the ROM to be only used with a specific purpose or can it be used as a daily driver?
Hi Guys!
As you wrote without kernel changing, system does not boot.
But with kernel changing (after flash Redcankut), system booting, but touch not recognized anymore... phone goes to uselessness... I can't unlock screen, I can' type anything...etc
ROM working just like any other LOS based ROM and can be safely used as a daily driver. That being said, OP wasn't kidding when he said that this stuff is for hackers. Kali NetHunter is a waste of resource on a complete noob like me (took 1gb of extra download data to set up the environment).
Note - anyone interested in Kali NetHunter should first try it out in a proper Linux environment and get the feel of it before jumping onto android based hacking. This is because there are less troubleshooting/learning guides or tech support for using Kali on android phones compared to Linux.
LineageOS is a free, community built, aftermarket firmware distribution of Android 8.1 (Oreo), which is designed to increase performance and reliability over stock Android for your device.
LineageOS is based on the Android Open Source Project with extra contributions from many people within the Android community. It can be used without any need to have any Google application installed. You will need to provide your own Google Applications package (gapps). LineageOS does still include various hardware-specific code, which is also slowly being open-sourced anyway.
Base source code is available in the LineageOS Github repo. And if you would like to contribute to the project, please visit our Gerrit Code Review.
Device tree source code: RedmiDevs/android_device_xiaomi_msm8937-common
Kernel source code: RedmiDevs/android_kernel_xiaomi_msm8937
Broken:
WIFI MAC address gets randomly generated (only once, you will keep the same as long as you are on LOS)
Sepolicy is still permissive
Nothing else? Otherwise please report it!
Working:
Camera (and flashlight)
WiFi
Bluetooth
Telephony (Calls and Data)
Audio (Record and Playback)
Video Playback
Sensors
GPS
VoLTE
Compatibility:
Compatible with all Xiaomi Redmi 4A and Redmi 5A variants (16GB / 32GB), other Redmi devices are not supported.
Builds are based off the Xiaomi's Android 7.1 firmware with proprietary blobs from MIUI 8.3.29 dev package.
Downloads:
Unofficial download links
Notice:
No custom kernels are supported in this thread. Only stock kernel and official builds will be supported. No bug reports if that's not the case.
Installation:
Reboot to recovery (Custom TWRP recovery for Redmi 5A - Direct link)
Format /system, /data and /cache
Install LineageOS zip package
Install [optional] the LineageOS su addon to get root (there are obviously other root methods, but this is the recommended one as it survives to OTA updates)
Install [optional] a Google Apps package of your choice (Open GApps is advisable, but stock and super variants are not recommended!!!)
Important notes:
Current minimal * required * firmware version is MIUI 8.3.29 Global dev, otherwise installation could have issues. Download the latest dev fastboot package directly from Xiaomi and flash it prior to installing LineageOS or, alternatively, download and install one of the latest custom packages containing firmware only (at your own risk).
GApps can only be flashed on clean installs.
Formatting data (all user data is wiped, including internal storage) is a must if MIUI was previously installed and device was encrypted.
Credits & collaborations:
This work is due to efforts from RedmiDevs founding members that did the full device bring-up. Huge thanks to @xboxfanj for all the help during that bring-up.
Finally, all RedmiDevs & LineageOS team would like to thank everyone involved in helping with testing, coding, debugging & documenting! Enjoy!
is it safe ? tested on Riva ? any other bugs ?
Can we flash this while using a custom rom or do we have to revert to miui 8.3+ global before flashing?. I'm currently using crdroid oreo build. Thought i might give this a try since it's having root problems as of now.
If you already use any Oreo build or custom rom based on Nougat, this one should be fine if you just do a clean install
Insane! I remember several months ago where Treble was (said to be) locked and accessible only for certain devices. XDA devs (like yourself) proved them wrong. Then again it makes sense that Treble could reach devices like Xiaomi, which apparently have spare unusable partitions that could be transformed into a vendor partition. It doesn't matter if devices like 5A or 4A are A-only devices, what matters is budget phones like ours won't lose cream of the crop features that Android offers, we won't be stuck with half-baked OEM ROMs that some (or most of the time) disappoints us users with crippled updates or even worse, updates with super worse stability. Kudos to you @33bca !
Have anyone tried it yet???
Thanks for the development.
Yeah, I always test my builds before pushing them to XDA, I never release broken roms
(I've already answered this question above, so check the previous posts first...)
I have tested it everything works fine and smooth.
But there's these bugs.
1.there's a click sound from the speaker coming before every sound
2. its not really a bug as you mentioned in your post about the WiFi Mac address changing. Most of the people won't even notice it but I am having problems, you see the WiFi I use does require Mac address to be connected to the device and that's why I am not able to connect to the WiFi, though I can just tell the owner to add my new Mac address in the system, but I change ROMs very often so I would have to ask them so many times,(I tried to change the Mac address it don't work) it would be really helpful if you could fix it and make it keep the original mac address. Thanks.
I'm coming back sir !, sems the problem is same with crdroid oreo build
sometimes audio like 'bump', its wierd sound when sometimes audio start
Big thanks for developing this device sir, really appreciate it
Wanna ask, how to use the Google camera mod in this rom? Cz i already try some apk's, but no one working, i already enable camera2api, use magisk, no one works, any idea sir?
what is so called “clean install”?
and
can we update it via OTA?
thx!
the rom is very good, but it has two bugs:
- weird click sounds (something like sound distortion)
- GPS icon is always showing on the notification bar
could you also implement mpdecision for better battery life?
will this work for ugglite??
Pretty much no, because the vendor and boot is purely for riva-rolex. Sorry about this.
I don't have issues with GPS Icon always showing on notif bar/status bar. Maybe it's because I've added Gravity Box (O).. But I think I never had that issues since first boot.
Hi, thanks for the rom and unifiing.
About the MAC Adress problem i recall a similar problem on the oneplus 2, maybe there lies an easy fix there.
Yes you can, but you have to search for the Oreo version, it's not on Magisk Repo and no old dolby atmos flasher would work. But you can't use it side to side with other Audio mods.
