Hi guys. I have been on android since 2011 and ever since I have been modding my phones and devices. One thing I found out is that when you pack your device full of goodies and games and apps, your device can start to get laggy and the battery drains faster.
As for the Galaxy tab 3 I saw that it gets quite laggy when some apps are installed....
Here's what I do to manage and Maintain my tab:
Battery life:
1.) The number 1 thing I do when I unbox and setup my device is install Battery Doctor.
-This app I found charges your device in a certain way to prolong battery survival and it does it in 3 steps.
-This app also has modes that you can turn on that you can customise to a setting of your desire.... it comes with 3 as standard. Extreme mode and super saving mode helps a lot when your not using it for a while.
- Lastly it has optional widgets that you can put on home screen that optimises the battery, cleans apps/cache.
2.) Another one that you may find as useful is MobileCare. This app has a battery saving mode, App manager and Task killer if your are looking at JUST battery. This app offers a much simpler way to reduce battery drainage from the click of a switch power saver mode is enabled.
Performance Enhancing Apps
So to have optimum performance without rooting your device or overclocking here is what I use:
1.) MobileCare - As well as battery saving there a few other tweaks it has that I didn't mention above....
-Game Speeder- this basically give you a choice of the app you wish to run and it will basically optimise the app/game for you so it runs as smooth as possible.
- It also has a built in Antivirus/Anti-theft feature which also speeds and improves performance if there are viruses or ads slowing you down.
- Task killer- this app basically kills all apps and processes so the ram is nice and fresh.....1gb RAM can get packed sometimes.
2.) Memory Booster- This apps really helps as well.
-It features a Quick boost mode when you just want free space and instant performance.
-It also shows proof of it working in the form of a monitor and a diagram showing ram before and after.
-This app also features its own task killer and a boost log.
-This app is really useful because it comes with some really nice small compact widgets that you can do the quick boost function and task killer from a simple tap on the home screen instead of actually opening the APP itself.
Please feel free to add on to this list....I wrote these because they were the most efficient in terms of being able to use them seemlessly.
This thread is ideal for those who havn't got root access and want to maintain their tab 3's.
I will upload links Shortly.
edit-----I know the Task Killer mentioned dosnt kill ALL the apps and processes. However the point of that app is to close all of apps and processes that wouldnt harm your system if they were closed, so you have you normal open apps that need to be closed and then some background apps and clears cache etc.
Not bad, but rooting is so easy and you get much more control.

Yup.. But even after rooting... BAttery doctor really improves battery!
I use juice defender ultimate and du battery saver pro. Best battery saving app. The best contributor is lux auto brightness( paid version). Brightness is very crucial for saving battery. Ex. At night our tabs tend to be more brighter. You can even set the brightness for any light level your in.

LOL I totally forgot about that one. I liked that app for its quick features... most of it was paid though..
Task killers are useless and in fact do more harm than good. Android is quite good at managing its own memory and doesn't need the help. Task killers tend to stay in memory which defeats the purpose, and 99.9% of the time the tasks they kill automatically restart anyway. They are not at all necessary and should be avoided.

I do and also dont agree having task killer why? They dont kill every single app u wanted and thus free only 5MBs of ram. Most apps like Advance Task Killer do the job well but the app itself takes the memory which makes it a disadvantage having a third party app task killer but then they do free up memory very well. Until now I havent found an app which has very less ram consumption and frees up memory very well.

They already have a task killer/ram manager already built in.
Simply holding down the middle button brings up all your resent apps with the option to kill all on the right, and on the left an extension which shows among others a RAM Manager.

so laggy
Hi guys, I just got the tab 3 8.0, and I like most part of it but the performance is seriously bad..I have restored ask my apps from Google server and while running apps and switching between them, I can't take all the lags it has. I just got it today so I can return it if I want but I'm wondering if rooting this device actually gains much performance improvements. I used to have a galaxy s2x, which has a similar if not worse spec than this tablet, and I don't know if I was running rooted version of touchwiz or not but the performance was pretty good. This tablet is much worse. A simple reboot fixes the lag but after a few hours, as I use it, I notice the stutters while using it. I just had a serious lag in Google plus app, it was stuttering so bad, but it came back to smooth after 5 seconds.
So installing the custom Rom available for tab 3 8.0 improve the performance significantly? I know there are not many ROMs for tab 3 8.0, so any user of this device just rooted the tab and tweak it themselves to gain performance improvements? Not just little bit, but a lot.
Thanks!

Mine is not laggy in the slightest, in fact it's quite zippy. Instead of blaming the device, look at your apps. It's possible one of them is the culprit. If a reboot helps, it sounds like you have too much stuff loaded in memory. How much free space do you have?
I know what you guys mean...... I know they dont kill all the apps....BUT it still makes a difference.....even if it kills off 200mb of cache and apps.... It makes a dramatic improvement to performance if you are running on a a stock rom! Not all of the task killers work as effectively as eachother I admit but some apps are really good for a quick time boost
I'll chime in. I always read that task killers are useless, because Android inherently does a good job of managing memory or what not. I personally dislike Android's autokiller; the more RAM you have the more it will work non-obtrusively, but it generally has a tendency to kill apps I don't want killed, when they don't need to be killed, and it does nothing at times to kill apps I don't want running.
What I do is I use Minfree Manager (I run it manually on boot, I'm sure there's a file somewhere you can edit which makes the app unnecessary)) to tweak the auto-killer, such that it doesn't kill apps except when absolutely necessary. My previous phablet, I used ZDBox to kill non-whitelisted apps every time I turned the screen on (and I manually killed whitelisted apps when applicable). This worked well and I only have good things to say about ZDBox, the older version was very lightweight and easy to use. Unfortunately ZDBox's task killer is incompatible with the Galaxy Tab 3 (at least my T211).
Thus far with the T211 I have been using Super Manager to kill non-whitelisted apps (like Google Play Services, etc) on standby. I am not sure whether it kills them, it only claims to "clean memory." Yes, they all start back up and memory usage increases quickly once again relative to the blacklisted apps, but this still prevents these apps from running non-stop and accumulating RAM usage, and even if that is meaningless, it at least serves a purpose by flashing a note in my status bar every time I toggle my screen on and off, regarding how much free RAM I have and how many apps are running. Yes the service runs in memory constantly, but that can't possibly be causing a problem because everything is fairly speedy.

I know what that guy means though..... I was running stock rom with stock kernal on my 7.0 and it was fine until I started downloading apps for it....It got to a point where no matter how much I overclock to performance it would still lagg even when i closed all my apps.
However I downloaded a custom rom with all these tweaks and now im running those same apps I had before running as sweat as a nut without even overclocking.:silly:
Hi mate, you are using my ROM, right?
I just quote, so other users get to know RocketTab as well...
And I'm still working on further improvements...
My Galaxy Tab 3 8.0 runs great from stock, but since rooting and using arshull's kernel (latest release) with the addition of trickster mod app, I am getting super snappy performance! With the ability to tweak cpu and gpu settings and build.prop tweaks I couldn't be happier. Battery life is good and I am a heavy user and lag is nonexistent in games, even some of the heavy duty ones.
BtW, a big thanks to arshull for his development with the GTab 3 8.0, and this forum and all its contributors! :good:

well keep in mind the 8.0 has an extra .50 of RAM. So that does effect the performance. I'm having the same issue. I have the S3 with 1.5 of RAM and never have any issues with lagging or apps running out of memory. Im wondering the same thing as the OP if a root would benefit this tablet in the way of performance.
If anyone has a 10.1 that they have rooted could you post any results or performance improvements that you saw from it?

I know, it's a 2 year old phone with just 1GB RAM and TouchWiz on top of it.
I've spent the last 2 days trying a LOT of roms to try to make the phone feel faster, because I don't want to buy a new one. I really like this one. The camera is AMAZING, decent battery life, love blocking mode, etc. As a phone it works great: good speaker, strong vibration, great signal, etc.
But there's one single thing that makes this phone feel "old": the speed. Just the speed. If it were faster and more fluid then there would be absolutely no reason to upgrade to the new phones (except, well, maybe more RAM and battery).
Yesterday I tried like 15 AOSP roms: CM11, temasek, ultimaAOSP, NeatROMAOSP, Vanir, AOKP, SlimKat, etc.
Nothing. It's slightly faster, but the problem is the animations. They just look wrong all the time. There's frame drops everywhere. And bugs and crashes, so back to Samsung stock today. Tried another 10 samsung based roms. Nothing new. Speed is still the same and frame drops are still there...
I guess I'll have to end up buying a new phone, but definitely not a flagship. I'm looking at midrange phones that come with AOSP. Found one with 2GB RAM, 13Mpx camera, 2500 battery, 5 inch 720P IPS screen, microSD and dual SIM for 199$. Great price, and comes with 4.4 stock Android.
Tried the phone at the store the other day and it just made my SGS3 look like the midranger, and that with a MediaTek A7 1.3 quad core!
+++
Exactly. Well, animations are smooth on AOSP with right kernel, but still not as it should be. This phone sucks when it comes to UI performance.
Now I even got broken camera and media playback, too, after stressing it with every new test on my phone.
Well, probably this phone worked the best with 4.1.2. I think it's all about crappy processor, called exynos.
EDIT: Btw,you can try archidroid 1x with his boeffla presets, though. After all,it's not that bad.
I think you are just setting unrealistic expectations if none of those ROMS, without TouchWiz, were any good for you.
There is nothing crappy about the processor mate. your case is an isolated issue. If the archi ROM is not smooth for you then there is something wrong with your phone.
it's always wise to stick to ROMs and kernels which are built using proper sources.
Do not restore a massive amount of data soon after a flash. Let the ROM settle a bit. Trim your device memory once in a while.
Also a megawipe is recommended after so many flashes.

I put Cyanogenmod CM11 on mine after updating to stock 4.3. It felt like a completely different phone and brought back the speed. It absolutely flies and battery time is double what it was on stock 4.3.
I tested alot of Roms but regading speed and batterylife i use Temasek with Yank kernel. No OC and de S3 flys.
Oh god, it's like reading a thread I could have written myself. I feel you, mate. Got the same damn frustations sometimes.
It seems that whichever ROM "camp" you choose, you're gonna have drawbacks. Tried so many different variants of TW-roms and i just feel they are all too slow and with lags.
Many of the AOSP-roms are quite fast (using ArchiDroid atm which is incredibly fast!) but then you get the problem of crappy camera, no Allshare, tethering issues, many games that have sound-issues and all those random bugs we all know about but try to live with
Perhaps the new Kitkat port can solve these issues but it seems there is a lot of work to be done still. Still I'm glad there's a community like XDA with such awesome people (Like Kryten who posted earlier ) who put the time into developing these things.. Or we would be stuck with even slower ROM's from Samsung.
Is there any way to get rid of it, or at least reduce it?
Install smart droid, further debloat, run greenify and boeffla, custom launcher and its quick, no lag
Even the s5 can't run without lag using Touchwiz.

Yes there is, activate Developer Options by tapping on the Build Number in About Phone. In there are 3 settings for animations. The 1st thing I do on every rom is decrease them to 25%. On CM11 and temaseks builds you have a slider which allows you to fine tune the settings instead of the picker which you find on other roms.
My personal experience is that OmniRom is just snappier than any of the others, even when I have a whole bunch of apps open, incoming calls get displayed almost instantly, the dialer and contacts open almost instantly. In my case of course. Everyone has their favourite rom/kernel combination. I have also had great success using Yank555's kernel with the default settings (which include a slight overclock with no noticeable battery drain.
So my temporarily solution is to completely disable the animations in developer settings.
It's a good solution, for now.
My combo right now is stock Samsung 4.3 debloated (many useless apps freezed. Other apps freezed also using Titanium Backup) with Boeffla kernel.
It gets annoying when animations aren't smooth and consistent, but I guess it's expected when Touchwiz is on top and just 1GB RAM.
Taking about RAM, this phone has almost no multitasking also! It's impossible to keep one Chrome or Internet tab open in the background while you do something else. When you go back to the Internet app it has to reload again.
And no custom rom can fix this either. I spent one week with AOSP Vanir rom and didn't had multitasking there either.
What I'm trying to say is that this phone has turned old faster than it should have, precisely because of a bad 4.3 update by Samsung and also just 1GB RAM.
And talking about speed and lag again, trust me, I've tied all the good roms available. It won't matter if you install a custom kernel. If you overclock the phone then battery will last even less than before, and it doesn't make a huge difference in speed animation and fluidity.
I'm sure AOSP roms like CM11 and others do work faster and more fluid in newest phones like G2, SGS4, HTC One, etc. It's because they have a better processor and 2GB RAM.
In the end I think it's the hardware that's to blame for the lag (and bad 4.3 update by Samsung too).
The phone is great otherwise. I love almost everything about it, like I previously said. Most times I can't believe how good the camera is, the screen is enough for me (no need for 1080P), size and weight is perfect, etc.
I would have preferred to own the US SGS3 model with it's 2GB RAM than the EU model. In the long run I think it's better.
But anyway, the lag is not huge, just annoying. And I only notice it when opening and closing apps.
Try entering development settings and change the animator duration scale to 0.5 the transition animation scale to 0.5 and the window animation scale to 0.5
It will make anything faster

You don't understand it.
It doesn't matter the scale animation (just tried with 0.25, 0.5, 0.75 again), there's still frame drops everywhere.
It doesn't make anything "faster". It's even more annoying watching the frame drops at 0.25.
It's not a solution. There is NO solution to the animation frame drops, not even on custom roms...
Only "solution" is to turn animation scale completely to 0.
I have sgs3 intl and I had a lot of lags and frame drops and I switched to CM 11 nightly and it's became faster and no frame drop and it's like new.
What Android version do you use?

Alright,my last bet will be to go on Archidroid stock based ROM,use it's own boeffla preset setting and turn animations to 1.5x. Animations will be smooth all around, only custom launcher is needed, because when opening or closing apps on touchwiz,it's still stuttery. I'm still using touchwiz launcher, though (lovely animations all around!).
I noticed 1.0x is the worst speed for animations on stock ROMs. I mean, with 1.0x,I notice some fps drops much more when opening a new windows with animations. Like it's too fast for CPU to tune right time for speed and animation and that makes it laggy. So it's all about wrong timing,as 0.5x also feels much more smoother,it's noticeable.
But the 1.5x setting compensates that. No more stuttery animations at all and it feels pretty beautiful. This was my last solution for stock touchwiz ROM,and I'm pretty happy. Try it yourself.
EDIT: Btw,if you also want to keep touchwiz, try xposed app settings, find there touchwiz launcher and tick the checkbox for "resident" option. That way it will keep the launcher in memory hardly,so when you will go back to launcher , shadows under the icons won't redraw and thus stuttery animations will be reduced and will happen much more rare.
On multitasking, try maximising your swap. Never have problems going from Chrome, email, FB etc. Also try removing apps 'receiver' settings, so they don't open on unlock, wifi connect etc..

There have been a select FEW roms that solved most of the issues you talking about, but they mostly old and the developers have moved on. The truth is, AOSP kitkat isnt optimized for our phones and you most likely wont find a stock based ROM that doesn't lag. I think the main culprit is Jellybean + Samsung together. I don't ever recall ICS having frame drops or lagging really. Samsung did a crappy job optimizing jellybean for our phone. Jellybean is hardware intensive, more than ICS and Kitkat. Seems like it was a temp solution while Google worked on KitKat and now our phone is unfortunately stuck there.
Do yourself a favor and don't get a Samsung if you want proper performance.

Battery life and stability is good so far!
First day on 6.0.1. I am happy so far with battery life and stability. About 5 hours of SOT and almost 24 hours of use.
That's great. No turning back to LP for me
better wifi connection on MM too. Just wish I had TWRP for it so I could make a backup
haven't had problems with MM yet, battery seems a bit better, Doze for sure improve stanby, rest so far stable and working as it should
Liking it for the most part. Stable, not met any bugs. RAM is good, battery seems about the same. Not keen on the new wallpaper settings style and the new audio wizard is confusing. I also got the beta version of the zen launcher - only slight visual tweaks really, but gives it a bit of a fresh feeling.
Bug: Every time I transfer a compile apk to install, it always takes me out the first time the package is corrupt but install the second test.
I had a recurring bug display after running a graphics-intensive application (it stutters) is resolved.
For the rest it's not better or worse than lollipop, autonomy is worth. This version brings nothing convincing.
better and better than 5.0.
RAM is so good
i have a huge problem with gyroscope and proximity. Both not working.
Anyone here experiencing bugs with the AudioWizard? It resets its config upon reboot?
Quick question, since I have not installed it yet. I assume it combines all your internal storage (system and internal storage) like Cm13 does? To me, it's one of the more important features. Having the 2gb/16gb US model, that gives me a lot more space for apps.
Sent from my ASUS_Z00A using Tapatalk
what CPU govenor does it use? Please tell me its not interactive (or that you get a decent selection at least).
If i use the standard 5.0.1 setup I go through around 4-6% of battery per hour, using tasker to switch off/on cpu cores and slow others down its down to 2-3% without a noticeable impact to performance.
Antutu benchmark result
63218 ! Isn't that great?
My experience with MM
Battery Life -
Since I am a new user, I cannot post screenshots here. Sorry about that. Overall battert life has been okay for now. Need to give the system about a week before making a judgement on it I guess.
Performance -
General performance has been quite smooth, but will need to test with heavier games to check RAM management. Normally, apps open almost instantly.
Bugs -
- Even after applying Super Saving mode (Settings > Power Management > Power Saver), I've found that window animations still exist, which was not the case with Lollipop.
- There appears to be a slightly reddish tint to the screen when Youtube video information overlay appears. Although the tint disappears when video goes fullscreen again.
As of now, these are the only issues I could find.

usually 750-850mb, which is not so different than before. The thing is that used to drop to under 300 and slow down over time unless you manually cleared, but now it seems to release RAM by itself properly. I can now forget about RAM.

i have Facebook and messenger app <3
Had my first weird wakelock this morning. Phone has been mostly asleep on my desk the last 4 hours, but battery stats show it awake all the time and with weird wifi behaviour too (I didn't toggle off wifi, but there is no wifi connection here).
I'd say the Marshmallow update was long overdue. Although I am really enjoying the beta release.
Bugs:
Android Pay doesn't seem to be working anymore, I'm getting the dreadful "Google is unable to verify" message when trying to add cards.
The notification bar jerks open sometimes, though that's a common issue in Marshmallow.
The latest Poweramp app isn't working for me. Can't tell if that's the app's fault or the phone. It did work before switching to the beta release.
Notes: Battery life looks way better than before, with almost no drain on standby in my tests. Other than that there's not much to say though I COMPLETELY hate that they replaced the Clear All Apps button with the booster thing that shows you how much RAM was released. I'm having to get used to just not clearing the apps anymore (though w/ the 4GB RAM model that's not too bad).
Hey guys,
I was very annoyed with Nokia 5 performance, I got a new phone running Nougat 7.1.2 out of the box and same evening it updated to Oreo 8.1. I was excited, new phone running latest Android but it turned out that device is slow, laggy, sometimes unresponsive, and almost unusable from time to time. Compared it with my kid's Ulefone S7 (MTK, 2 Gb ram) and Ulefone is waaaay faster, shorter loading times, smoother games and graphic, in a word, everything! I contacted the support and they told me that all of that will be fixed in the next big update (Android 9, Q1 2019), so I poked around like I usually do and managed to speed up my phone significantly. This is what I did: first, enable developer settings (tap 10 times on build number in Settings /system /about phone), dial down animations to 0.5x or even off, then enable GPU rendering as well as tether hardware acceleration, set 4 processes in the background and voila! Phone is much much faster and more responsive, it almost feels like another device! The difference is huge and I cannot believe that system animations were choking this phone so much. Definitely, Oreo isn't polished enough for Nokia 5 and it won't work nice on default settings. Back in the day, I had more spare time with other phones, so I was changing build.prop, flashing roms, scripts etc but now I really can't do it especially that I don't have a spare phone, at least not similar to this one. Then you could install custom recovery and flash ROMs on daily or weekly basis and chose which one suits you best but now it's not the case with Nokia 5. Locked bootloader and lack of roms and support makes me poke under the hood of official Oreo trying to make it work as best as possible. Try it guys, you have nothing to lose.

You are doing the work of the gods here. Thank you so much.
You're busy and don't have time to wait, which is why you need to stop reading this thread and get back to organizing your Pogs. Rate this thread to express how the Realme 5 Pro performs when multitasking. A higher rating indicates that the Realme 5 Pro keeps many apps in memory so that they don't need to reload, and that when moving between apps, transitions are smooth and performance is excellent.
Then, drop a comment if you have anything to add!
Talking about multi tasking is kinda pointless because the default settings freeze apps that stay in the background for a while. You have to allow each app separately to stay in background. After doing that, multitasking is quite good even with 4 Gb variant.
i've found out that default INTELLIGENT POWER SAVER was too aggresive. It kills every apps that are standby in memory. It affecting battery drain too.
So i just turn off this option and battery drain got better. More apps stay in memory, no reload on my 4gb varian.
Open Settings > Battery > INTELLIGENT POWER SAVER (turn it off)
You could set which apps that always run in background with custom power saver. Don't overdo it as it makes ram consumption higher.
more than 1gb free from 4gb with more than dozen apps on ram. That's fine for me

Thank you. That helps a lot. I wish the phone came with clean android. Unskinned. I really hate these communist android solutions.

Glad it helps you.
colorOS is okay, fluidity, smothness was good. It consume more RAM than stock android, yes. It's par with miui from xiaomi.
Every custom android has it's pro and cons as with stock android. Little bit boring in my opinion.

Indeed fluidity is awesome and the system is fast. My main concerns on Color OS are Gcam support, almost every app that I tried and worked on Pixel Experience rom didn't work here. The system manages notifications a seriously overcomplicated way, same goes for battery saver and apps. Pixel like android can be controller way more easily and didn't have to turn lots of features off in order to reach balanced performance and battery. Stock camera also rather bady including 48 mp. Open Camera and gcam makes awesome shots though.
