Galaxy Tab S3 gets LineageOS 18.1 - Samsung Galaxy Tab S3 Guides, News, & Discussion

Last night, I managed to boot my Tab S3 running LineageOS 18.1.
At this moment I got stuck at reviving the camera and audio... including so many things but not that noticeable.
In fact, the camera isn't that important to me, and I believe it is the same for most people here, but the audio is a very very important matter.
With my Tab, I just want to watch videos without any bothering stutterings on the screen when I select a video to do with.
I started this work because I felt that this amazing tablet, composed of a big DCI-P3 supported AMOLED screen and AKG tuned quad speakers, should not be abandoned by the massive, bloated Samsung firmware which even won't be updated anymore.
And right, there is a LineageOS by Valera1978 and this is working well, but this ROM doesn't support audio rotation and L1 Widevine.
I saw that the LineageOS for Galaxy Tab S5e supports both two immersive features. So, I think it should be the same on our tablet too I hope.
It did take almost 3 months to get it working because this is the first time for me to port LineageOS to an Android device.
It is really hard work for me. About 200 hours I spent so far I think. Because at the first time I started with android_device_xiaomi_msm8996-common, and even I didn't know how the Android device tree is composed.
I have an LTE model (T825), and I will work for the Wifi model (T820) too. I want to manage those two types of devices using the "common" device tree. That is a modern way we should ahead.
And I will rework the kernel based on the latest kernel by Samsung.
I will upload the ROM in a few weeks after some additional work including TWRP.
Hope this ROM works well.

Okay, now I'm managed to fix the speaker outputs but no luck for the quad-speaker.
I just realized that the mixer settings for quad-speaker are very different from Galaxy Tab S5e.
In other words, the "rotation patched" audio HAL which is being used for Galaxy Tab S5e cannot be applied to our tablet.
So only the bottom speakers working for now.
Have to look into how the vendor firmware deals with the quad-speaker and rotation. I hope they didn't put the codes into the core binaries.
My current strategy is looking into the kernel so that to know how the mixer names/values are handled.
Anyone who has an idea please let me know.

Anyway I can also install lineage os 18? You got a donation page?

Hey, thanks for having interested in this.
Now I'm cleaning up my project and I expect the rom will come within 1 or 2 weeks at least. If it works on your tablet, let me put my donation page into the release thread.
Another what I need to prepare is the working TWRP, surely the latest version.
BTW the quad-speaker might be not working even on that date I think.
It seems it is not related to the kernel. I have found and seen the frontend and endpoint entries but the kernel is actually not that different from the other MSM8996 devices.
I need to investigate more deeply.
Edit) Oh, I just found some interesting things on the kernel source. I think maybe this is related to the quad-speaker but I still need to dig in more.

This is great news! Thank you for sharing!

Too late.
I'm trying to remove some annoying repeated messages on the logcat but I couldn't succeed.
And ADB/MTP are not working on my TWRP.
A little bit tired, so maybe I could make some mistakes and I can't realize them.
I will upload the current version and I'd like to stamp it as [ALPHA] stage.

Finally I uploaded my work online.
Please visit here to get further information about my LineageOS 18.1.

I have not tested on the other Galaxy Tab S3 devices. Hope this working well for the other people too..

Why are we working on Oreo???

Why are we working on android Oreo? Should we try to perfect Nougat first. I see this so much with other devices, instead of having a few perfect roms you have a ton of half baked ones.
I'm running this device on Oreo and it works perfectly well for my needs. Its not my day to day tablet, but as a backup tablet, its there when I need it and does what I need it to. Why wouldn't they work on Oreo? There's no such thing as a perfect rom and nobody is ever going to make one due to limitations in hardware and open source drivers etc....
Personally, I'm happy that they have brought the latest incarnation of Android to this device and look forward to watching it improve with each new release.

>No such thing as a perfect rom
what are you talking about? Nougat on my RAZR M (just as old as the Nexus 10) runs flawlessly, and everything functions, so yes, there is such a thing as a perfect rom (or at least one with minimal bugs)
Most all roms have all functions on my ancient OG Nexus 7 (albeit a bit slow)
>Running oreo
HW video playback doesn't work, so no youtube app or netflix
Camera is still broken (some people need it for conference calls and hangouts chats)
--flash is broken too (you usually don't need it, but for those few situations you do, this is quite annoying)
Bluetooth wifi bug persists (turning on bluetooth and connecting a device makes wifi slow down and then disconnect)
My point is that we shouldn't just ditch/give up on fixing old bugs just to pursue a newer version of android. I'd rather run stable and fast Nougat than a half baked Oreo or Nougat build any day.
I know development is hard (my build set up errors out like no other) but that is just the reason we need to fix these things before wasting our time on something that will be harder to fix.

If you know how to fix the issues on Nougat, nobody will stop you.
The Devs. which are still supporting the N10 said that they are not specialists for the open issues like camera, so they can't fix it. We should be happy that they try to make the best rom which they are capable and motivated for Nougat/Oreo etc.

they aren't though, that's my point. They are slowly moving on to building oreo instead of trying to fix nougat which would both be easier and more beneficial to the community.

I obviously don't (not that I'm not trying to), and part of my point is that the people who are the most competent (not competent, just the most competent, if you know what I mean) would get on the camera fix choo choo train, we could probably have a fix sooner rather than never.

Got your point. Nevertheless if the developers are not willing or capable doesn't matter. It's their decision and they owe us nothing. If you read the different threads each dev. said why he didn't fix e.g. camera.

link me, I have been looking for explanations on the camera for ages now. I didn't know if it was a problem with the Exynos framework for the camera or Nougat/Oreo themselves.

Sorry my friend I will not read all posts of the last roms and why scanno, followmsi and the others are not fixing the open topics like camera, etc. That's your job. And if it is still not clear for you, you can ask the last active dev. (followmsi). he just pointed out today why he will not do so. Just read the posts around N10.

Marshmallow is the last version of Android where everything works right on the Nexus 10. I don't have links but from everything I have seen/read, the devs can't do anything about the camera after Marshmallow. Google isn't giving the devs anything to work with anymore so stuff has to be ported or fixed by the devs alone. And I do beleive it has something to do with the hardware. But as it stands, Nougat is pretty flawless except for the camera. And Oreo is getting worked on to fix the HW Video Playback and other bugs which I'm sure they'll get fixed eventually. But most of the issues lie with the hardware. There's nothing much any dev can do about certain bugs. At this point, it's either live with the bugs or move on from the Nexus 10.

I'll probably live with the bugs for a bit, I don't use the camera much, but when I do, its REALLY convenient. Marshmallow works great, and worst case I sell my N10 and grab a Nexus 9

Yeah, don't get a nexus 9. Oreo has the same problems (no h/w video decoding, no camera) on N9. I've pretty much given up on Android tablets (I own 4, Touchpad, N10, N9 and Amazon Fire w/ LineageOS), it looks like google has too.

I can't, I love android tablets. They are a blast to use, and I use them much more often than my phone. To each their own, but frankly Google can suck it if they think people will stop using tablets.
The point is thet when android 8 wil works on nexus 10 all newer androids will work to thanks to project treble.

iirc project treble was only for devices shipping with oreo out of the box, and was only a requirement, i.e. you must have a compatible AOSP factory image that is compatible with other treble devices (which doesn't count the N10 as it shipped with 4.2). I'll give that link a read but I as far as I currently know it doesn't support the N10
@Galaxyninja66 to fix the camera you need to port the old api1 camera to nougat/Oreo.
The api2 camera code was removed entirely from Android, that's why the camera stopped working.
The reason nobody is working on this is because it takes a lot of time to do that and none of the active devs even use the camera

I also noticed while poking around in the camera HAL that a TON of values were just missing entirely. I would love a working camera but frankly it doesn't seem worth the work if it means either A: porting a deprecated API or B: rebuilding an entirely new one
*sigh* and the layer of dust on top of the Nexus 10 gets a little thicker.
Everyone else is doable tho
considering what an excellent tablet the Nexus was in its brief heyday, this is all very depressing! I really hate how valuable devices can be turned into landfill so gratuitously...

Solved Xperia AOSP Problems - Better as Stock

Hey Folks, while working on My next Snappatch Version was i able to fix the biggest Problems on the XZ Premium which should also affect other Xperias. Here are the main Points:
-Camera Noise (Solved)
-Display Quality (Solved)
-Audio Output Quality (Solved)
-Microphone Handling (Solved)
In conlcusion:
I added and enabled some Camera Services and Functions to enhance the Quality and to allow full Google Camera Mod Support.
I added and enabled Display Services and Functions to deliver a more Natural Output besides HDR Support and Adaptive Backlight capabilities.
I added and enabled Audio Services, Functions and Libraries from Qualcomm and SONY Oreo Firmwares to enhance the Output Quality over all Sources like Videos, Music and the main System.
Last but not least better Microphone Handling. Adapted and ehanced from many Android Devices and Qualcomm Documentations to deliver better Recognition and Input Quality over both Mics on top and bottom of the Device.
Nothing against switching from Stock to AOSP anymore. The benefits of Snappatched AOSP over Stock are huge. Latest SDK, full Substratum Support, better Audio and Visual Quality (In and Output), better Performance (Shadowgun Ledgends on Ultra - 60FPS, No heat, no glitches), more freedom of UI Layouts, better App Support, faster Storage Speeds, newer Kernel, Smoother UI, Adaptive Icon Support, Pixel Features and so on. The Snappatch for the XZP is coming soon and i Hope i can raise the Interest on AOSP on Xperias with this!
Forget Stock! This is the next Level! Love My XZP now...
Stay tuned and try it by Yourself!
I hope that you are right. But i want to try it very bad want i want a good working aosp! I CANT WAIT!!!
I'm on 8142 dual SIM I'm willing to try too
:cyclops: Ufff!!! sounds amazing !!! can't wait to test it
G8142 here also. Can't wait to try this out
I think I will unlock my bootloader ?
Can't wait for some reviews
I would really like to get some advanced Feedback and compares between Stock and AOSP. RAW alone should be worth the Bootloader unlock and going away from Stock. SONY does a really great Job on the Sources for our AOSP Bases and everything runs really well compared to other Devices like from LG. One Thing that really bothers Me is the buggy TWRP on our XZP. CPU Temp isn't showing right, MTP fails 90% of the Time and AROMA has a Displaying Bug. Since the Snappatch is coming with My own crafted AROMA Installer will we face a invisible Utility, but i will make a Video showing how to easily flash the Patch anyways on our Devices (Side by Side with working AROMA on the Axon 7).
Hope @Myself5 can solve the TWRP Issues one Day, and that more Users will pay attention to him and his Work on our Forums! Thanks a lot Mate for contributing that much to our Devices, and Sorry for People like this "FartyParty" Guy! Much respect for You, i know how it feels to be on XDA sometimes...

Strange. I Googled a lot about this and this was always a Issues with some TWRP Recoveries. Most of the Time did it helped to use older TWRP Images but the last one gives just a Black Screen after booting into it. If it possible release your patch for less than 5 hours because my internet time is going to end.please.
How was RAW support achieved?
From what I've seen, this wasn't possible before because there were no drivers that enabled that with the used camera chip.
And there's still one thing missing; SloMo support. Is there a chance this can be added as well?

It's all there on AOSP. Camera2 API is supported but not configured right (There are X Lines for the Cameras), i've seen the same on the Z1 and Z3 (https://forum.xda-developers.com/cr...ussion-development-custom-rom-t3479108/page11) some Years back, and i was sure it's all depending on this right now. Other Xperias may have the same Camera Problems since AOSP is coming with just the barely minimum of Build Properties and Configs. That's also the Case on the most other Devices and AOSP based ROM and one of the Reasons for doing My Patch. Some missing Things are causing Issues (Like Microphone Problems), and others do just bring a lack of Features (Like with the Camera and Display, Audio, etc.).
It's pretty Time intense to test all this Entries and Values but it's really worth the Time. And if i would do a OS would i start with that Things before changing the Kernel and adding ROM Features, but i can only talk for Me. Not sure how much Time ROM Devs put into building of AOSP for the own Devices, but i work for sure at least 40 Hours on One Major Release of My Patch (Including copying, flashing, testing and editing).
AROMA was also really Time Intense but i removed the Installer over Night and edited the Updater Script to flash the recommended Options without it. Here is a little List of what gets flashed:
-Original Oreo Pixel Bootanimation
-Original Oreo Pixel Ringtones, Alarms, Notifications
-HTC U 11 UI Sounds, Ringtones, Alarms, Notifications
-Prop Patch (Including many changes and Configs)
-Snappatch Core System (Including the mainly needed Content)
-Snappatch Audio System (Based on XZ Premium Oreo Stock)
-Snappatch Emojis (EmojiOne replacement Font)
-Magisk Stable V16
-Busybox with many Applets, SElinux & Magisk Support
-GApps (Barely minimum Set)
And that's it for now. It includes all of the Features of the Patch, less optional but i can ensure a great Experience with this Setup! Like said am i now about to fix the last Bugs which are Audio Config related and after that will come the Thread with the new Release. Hope You will like it Folks!

I removed the Audio System for now due to Issues with Xperias AOSP ROMs but i'll work on it again after releasing the actual Patch. Sounds already a lot better even without the replacement Libs and Configs! Stay tuned...

Concern over lack of Time development

Hi everyone this would be my first thread here at xda
I am considering getting the redmi K20 once it launches in India my biggest concern right now is the rom development for this phone can we expect anything are any developers interested in it or is it pretty much dead and it's better to go for something else
My main priority for the new phone is developer support
Thank you
Pro version will have better community development.
I would love to but looks like the pro wont come into my budget
So there will be complete lack of support or just that it will be slow?
I'd say very very slow. Mi 9T is an international version and there's almost nothing available for this device.
But, there's one good news, some (if not most) mods available for the k20 Pro/9T Pro will be compatible with the non pro version.
Actually, unless they are specific for the SD855, should work on our device.

I do.
It's working almost perfectly, the issues I found are:
• Camera pops up every reboot
• Screen needs to be awake to use the fingerprint
• Charging led not working (this one should be very easy to fix)
Developers are working on the other fixes, I bet they will be working perfectly very soon.
i hope it will be some custom, real rom, for this device, no need a lot, just some major ( lineage, havoc, maybe pixel experience)

Hi Everyone
Like everyone here im still stick to this nice little device. I also a big fan of the whole Shield Program by Nvidia as i started to be when i bought my first Shield TV back in 2015. Especially GeForce Now is in my opinion still the best Gamestreaming Service which was the perfect solution for me who likes to play sometimes newer and also older Games but doesnt wanted to buy a expensive computer or console. Which also made me buy a used Shield K1 after i found out they where just some months before discontinued. I really Happy with the Tablet in general i like the size of it,its still suprisingly fast when it works right and Geforce Now still working great which is nice on vacations like when i was in a hotel in the afternoons at my old job. But now i think we start to feel the age of the tablet which is noticable on the small Amount of Ram and the fact the Batteries are getting weaker with no possibilty on a direct replacement that gives back real 100% of the design Capacity of 5100mah. Also the last update from Nvidia 5.4 is really a nightmare to use until it get modified and debloated. Then its barely useable but still not perfect.
Of course i tryed out some of the actual Custom Roms where my favorite is at the moment The Unofficial LineageOS 14.1 from Saint2K and AOSPExtended 6.7 from Triodexe. The first is really stable and snappy but the Nvidia Games App doesnt work.
The second one is based on Android 9 and Nvidia Games is working after i was able to install the update by turning off the apk signature check because there was something wrong with the signature of the installed version of NvGames. But in both cases the console mode was buggy theres something wrong with the screen rotation. In my opinion its a bit of unused potential when you not able to use those great oem Apps.
I mean dont get me wrong i have deep respect for the big effort and work on those custom roms especially let me say thank you to Steel01, Saint2k and Triodexe that keeping this Tablet alive. Its just i would love to have a CustomRom based on Androud 7.1.2 like LineageOS 14.1 with a working Nvidia Games App,working Consolemode and at least the great Controller Connection and Mapper App. I tried to install those apks on both mentioned Roms which also needed apk signature check turned off and after they installed they appear in the dropdown menu but crash if you start them. In case of the AOSPExtended Rom i could pull this error message maybe its helpful :

Ok enough complaining here is what i can offer to get might some solutions:
For the Batteryproblem i working at the moment on a solution by finding a good battery that offers the full capacity of the oem one and it doesnt look too bad at the moment but more on that when i actually made enough progress to reveal it.
I'm not able to work on my own custom rom for this device because i'm dont have the knowledge and the time to build a rom from scratch but i have at the moment 4 different Shield Tablets here where TWRP is installed and i like to offer every builder the possibility to send me his in progress roms to test those out and help on tracking errors with sending detailed error descritions and logfiles of course. I have 3 K1 and one OG Tablet at the moment but i try to get a LTE Modell as Well. I also learn everyday more about the technicaly background of android and i was also trying to decompile the apks of the nvidia apps to found out what might wrong with them but i had no luck so far.
I really like to help to give these neat devices a another lease of life because the oem software apart from being buggy and slow has really a lot of nice apps and tools and made this device really special.

FireHD 10 Suez { Speed of Lineage vs Stock } -- Processing.org sketches

Hi,
I have a couple of these 2017 fire HD tablets all rooted and experimenting with various OS's on them.
I've been working on a processing.org sketch on android for a couple years now and running into some unique FPS issues.
When I run Lineage 2022 May edition, the app runs at roughly ~22FPS
When I run the same app on 5.6.2.0_Fire_HD_10_optimized_pre_rooted_stock_rom-signed.zip I get roughly ~40 FPS.
**Side note, I built a quick sketch to post here with source code and APK but when I run it on both tablets, they are both 60FPS.. which leads me to believe something else is going on weird. The sketch just dumps a bunch of circles on the screen and displays FPS in biggen font.
Is there anything I can do to provide someone details for research or help me in troubleshooting?
I'm tempted to try a old lineage build like
[discontinued][ROM][unlocked][suez] Lineage-12.1 [05 MAY 2020]Generally just work my way up to later and later builds and figure out where it broke and stay there.
Technically I don't NEED to run lineage, but I would like really any version of any OS for the fire HD that runs quickly. It doesn't need to be the latest.
I just need something with some customizability.. run app on USB power, auto power off tablet when USB power is removed... I haven't got that far yet.. but my requirements are minor.
Additionally.
Could someone provide some links to all the various os packages I can try installing?.. Not sure if it would be helpful, but a pinned post with just url's to all?
So far I have seen latest MAY 2022 release of Lineage, then these hacked older versions of the fire OS software. Is there any others?? Please link below I'd like to try them out.
Thank you,
Take care.
any news here ?
I haven't seen anything. I was just scooping up all OS releases and running a test sketch on each one.. I can publish a simple APK file if people want to try this out. But really there are better benchmarking apps out there, mine was just simple like draw a bunch of circles on a screen and print the fps.
Thanks... I'm going to install Lineage, so if you want to me compare....

Hi Targa,
I made a post on Reddit a while ago with the same subject and realized I didn't update the thread here.
This is what I tried.
5.6.2.0_Fire_HD_10_optimized_pre_rooted_stock_rom-signed.zip I get roughly ~40 FPS.
lineage-12.1-20200505-UNOFFICIAL-suez.zip ~locked at 44FPS. oldy thou.
lineage-14.1-20190926-UNOFFICIAL-suez.zip ~locked at ~48 FPS, less oldy.
*These aren't links.
As far as the OS is concerned, with what I am using the tablet for, I really do not care which one to use.
I have some basic requirements in which I'm guessing that any of them will work.
*I need a method to power on the device when USB power is applied.
* This app would auto start that I specify.
*When usb power is removed, the tablet would turn off.
I'm putting this in a car and writing some custom processing.org sketch and since the tablet is in a 3d printed caddy like thing, I don't have easy access to the power button and need things to be automated, I also don't want to have to touch the screen to launch something. Perhaps wishful thinking.
Thanks.
crap, I bricked by tab while trying to bring it to Lineage... Guess I need to open it now.
Thanks.
Is it the waiting for bootrom message? if it is plug in the usb leave it at the waiting for bootrom message on the terminal and hold the power button on the tab, it should take 5-15 seconds and it will then just say "remove short" which in the scheme of things there was no short. just hit enter and continue. I've done 3 of these tablets.
Yes, I managed, thanks for the hint (even if I already managed before, it was described in one of the threads).

No worries, I think a lot of times its hard to write guides. I tend to be overly verbose when explaining things to help with a lot of the back and forth. Habit I guess..

Did you find the "perfect" Software for your hardware?
@targa which Lineage OS version did you find to be more stable? I am going to change from stock because of compatibility issues... My primary requirement is reading and watching, after getting used to higher refresh rate displays I feel its too odd to use something with lower framerates, so I want to know more about it. also I bricked my suez(FireHD 10)... and if someone can help me a lil bit please feel free to send a message.

Hi there,
Honestly, I would try them all. My only test scenario was a single app I am making for a personal project.
My requirements were pretty low. Wireless needs to work, it needs to not drain power and decent frame rate in my app. Sound isnt required.
My results were pretty mixed and when it boiled down to it. It almost didn't make much of a difference. Because I don't need a lot of features, I would probably stick with the oldest release, and the sound patch to allow head phones to work.
Which is why I would say try them all. The latest does not always mean the best in my opinion. Feel free to prove me wrong here, I am up for discussion.
Thank you,
Take care.
Hi,
my tablet is now on Lineage and I'm happy with it. But my use cases aren't really extensive, I basically use it so that my kids can watch videos and earplays and some games. But for sure it's a lot better and newer than FireOS. I believe headphones did work so far.
