I must be missing something obvious. I tried to set the Downloader App as the default web browser on the Fire stick, but the Downloader does not offer such services!
I even installed the "Default App manager", but it would not let me select the Downloader App as the default browser either.
I guess the Downloader does not advertise itself as the web browser?
I wanted to have the Downloader handle the links for the APK Updater. It currently complains that "amazon fire tv does not open browser links". Must I install the full Silk to take care of this?

I have a standard Kindle Fire, I have not unlocked it or modified the software in any way. I sideloaded Opera Mobile, and have found it to be a big step up over the default Silk browser. I however have run into a problem using it to view Youtube videos.
If I leave the user agent as "tablet", I'm redirected to the mobile version of the video. When I click to play, I get an error message saying vdn.youtube is an unregistered protocol, instead of either playing in-browser or playing in the Kindle video player. I've done some searching, and apparently m.yahoo.com is trying to play the video in the default Android Youtube application which is not on the Fire nor available in the Kindle App store. Anyone know where I can find this in order to sideload it? Or know what to do to get it to launch the video in the Fire video player?
I can set the user agent to "desktop" and play back videos that way, but they playback in the browser window, which is less than ideal and has performance issues. So that isn't a solution.

i took it from my optimus v with astro file manager.....made a backup of the youtube app and side loaded it onto the kindle fire. works great with opera mobile.
I loaded Youtube 2.2.14 and it works fine. I got it from 4shared.com
I was wondering if anyone knows how to modify the "Web" link in the Kindle Fire's top menu (the Newsstand, books, Music, Video, Docs, Apps and Web menu) to use Dolphin Browser HD or any other 3rd party browser? I have set Dolphin as my default which works fine for launching links but I would like to change the default behavior in all available places.
I would assume you need to root the device to make this change and a rooted solution is perfectly acceptable but if there is a way to make this change on a non-rooted Kindle Fire that would be even more awesome.
Thanks for the help.
I've modified my build.prop to allow me to use the tablet UI on the Nexus 7 and I must say I prefer it. The only problem I've run in to is that BBC iPlayer, when opened, redirects me to the mobile site because their app isn't optmised for tablets. That's their excuse, not a conclusion I came to on my own.
My question: is there a way to trick the app into running phone mode and not tablet mode? I don't like running iPlayer in a browser because when I press the Home button to go do something else, iPlayer stops whatever I was listening to until I open the browser again.
Thanks all!
Dolphin Browser allows you to change the browser id to that of an iPad.
Don't know though if that's enough to force the i-streams from BBC.
If it works let me know so I can do it
BBC iPlayer comes back with a message saying the device isn't supported when I change the user agent to an iPad in Dolphin Browser
I recently found out how to install Adobe Flash and the original Browser that allows for Flash to be run in it. I installed Flash, installed the Browser, renamed BrowserProviderProxy.apk and .epox to something different, and went into my Browser settings and enabled Plugins to "Always On".
However, I still can't get ESPN3 to play on my Nexus 7. I can go to the "Full Site" and get a list of what's playing, but any time I click on a specific game the "WatchESPN, Available on WatchESPN App" notification pops up asking me to download the app; this shows up even after I click on "Request Desktop Site" and "View Full Site" (which just directs me back to the list).
Has anyone gotten ESPN3, or even Hulu, to work on their tablet through the Browser? If not, what's even the point of having Flash?
The browser runs flash fine but its still identified as a tablet browser. You can avoid that by running Firefox Beta or dolphin browser. The problem is that these browsers are dropping flash support so you may need to get an older version and turn off auto update. I can get the games to show up on Firefox Beta but it says there is a problem, which may be a real problem or could be that Flash is identified as a mobile version and blocked. Good luck
I'm using the older Dolphin Browser HD and ESPN3 works fine, watching college football right now. The browser crashes when I try to go full screen tho'.
Have you seen a video, and wanted to download it, but some app works and others don´t ?
This way works for me like a charm.
First download and install Dolphin Browser. (This have two options when you want to see a video, to see it on line or download. Always use see it on line, download feature is unstable).
Second download and install Es File Explorer. (This have a very stable download manager and give all details of a download)
So, for example, want a video from youtube, open it with Dolphin Browser, select the video, see it online, then in the right top corner are three points, push them and select view in ES downloader manager. That´s it.
The default name is "Playback" or the name of the page and some numbers, always in .MP4.
Works in all Androids.
PD If the streaming video doesn´t open with the Dolphin video player, copy the URL of the video, and open it with ES Download manager.
