Oneplus 8 pro or Samsung Galaxy note 20 ultra 5g? - OnePlus 8 Pro Questions & Answers

Hey guys. Can't decide between the two. Not a great fan of Samsung One UI and I think it looks too childish and not professional for a phone of that price. But I love the specs and design and the pen. Also expandable storage. You can also root and magisk.
On the other hand, I have the idea that oneplus 8 is amazing to modify with roms and clean android and it has dual SIM, which I need and want. Also love the purple color. Specs are also very good to excellent....
Which one would you choose and what would you say to me to help me decide? I played a bit with the ultra in store but would like to mod it a lot. I use exposed, xprivacyLUA, root and magisk, adguard and vanced as well as afwall+.
Thanks

Samsung Galaxy note 4 vs. Huawei Ascend Mate 7

Hello there
I'm currently in the search for a new smartphone and i have narrowed my search down to the Mate 7 and the Note 4. I currently own the Sony Xperia Z1 Compact which i a fine phone, but it's just way too small for my preferences.
I have previously owned a couple of Samsung phones, the latest a Galaxy Note 2 which i loved but i grew a little tired of their Touchwiz interface. The Emui interface seems fresher and i really like what i've seen in reviews so far, but i have my doubts about how "well rounded" and worked through it is compared to the Note 4's Touchwiz.
I don't play a lot of demanding games
I browse a lot
I use the camera quite often but i'm not an enthusiast
What phone would you recommend/buy?
I'm going to buy the phone on a 2 year contract and the difference in price isn't a problem.
I sold my Note 4 and bought the HAM7 and have no regrets. I have had all the top Samsung since the original Galaxy S and some Xperias along the way but this one has suprised me the most. Well built, best batterytime I have ever experienced, great screen and a surprisingly good camera. I had lags in TW on my Note4 and some freezing where I had to remove the battery to get it going again and that should not occure on a flagship at that price. The Huawei was a lot cheaper and performs on pair with the Note4 without the lagging and so. I also prefer Huaweis UI over TW, it is cleaner and love how you can change themes. And the fingerscanner is superb. I have also been thinking of getting the P7 just to try it out. All in all I am happy I got this one
Sent from my HUAWEI MT7-L09 using XDA Free mobile app
at price point, ham7 is a better deal than sgn4, especially for us who are so tired of lagwiz.
@rikken - Cool, thanks for the answer The battery performance and fingerprint scanner is a major plus. I also like that they have "kept" the screen resolution at full hd
Just ordered the phone! Thanks for your input :good:

Is the Note 4 the right phone for me? (last minute advice before I purchase)

Can anybody give me any last-minute advice before I sell my iPhone 6 Plus for a Galaxy Note 4?
I'm not looking for any iOS vs Android arguments, but after switching between iOS and Android, I seem to prefer Android much more.
However, I want an Android phone with a top-notch camera and it seems like the Note 4 has the best (?) camera available. I have two little kids and often don't take my camera with me, so I want a phone with a very good camera and excellent video capability as well. (I probably take slightly more videos than I do pictures)
I also want something at least 5" or larger. I'm mostly used to the "large" iPhone 6 Plus size, so I don't think the Note 4 will be a problem.
My top phones I'm deciding between are: Note 4, OnePlus One, LG G3, Sony Xperia Z3, Galaxy S5, Moto X.
Price isn't a concern because I'll be selling my iPhone 6 Plus to recoup the costs.
EDIT: I am a little concerned about the higher resolution on the Note 4 slowing down some light gaming, or having scaling issues with games, etc...
I actually just switched from a 6 Plus to a Note 4 in the past two weeks and I havent really regretted doing so. I have also owned the OPO, G3, and S5 and to my liking the Note 4 overpowers all. Note 4 takes wonderful pictures as you already with OIS as well as great videos. Since I have had the device I haven't snapped a lot of videos but I know there wouldn't be an issue in that category when it comes down to it.
As for slowing down when you are gaming, idk much about that since I do zero gaming on my device. You going from the 6 Plus to the Note 4 will be a breeze since the Note 4 is easier to hold in hands, despite people saying that the edges are sharp on the Note but that doesnt affect me since I run a case on my Note 4.
If you are taking lots of videos and pictures then having that external memory is a plus already. I am running an 128GB sd card in my device which I know is overkill but its there if I need it. I can also store a few 4k videos up there if I really wanted to. I don't think you will be dissapointed with the switch to the Note 4. Yeah it was a stretch coming from how smooth iOS is and then going back to bloaty Touchwiz but TW has been optimized a little more and with a few tweaks it can be very smooth, I say hit some comparison videos up on YouTube and then make the decision.
Thanks so much for the information!
I'm still doing research, and is it true that the AT&T version has it's bootloader unlocked, but the T-Mobile is unlocked?
I'd like to stay with AT&T, so would there be a problem purchasing the T-Mobile version and activating it on AT&T?
Unfortunately one of the applications I use (ARUnchained) requires root access so I do want an Android phone that can be rooted...
I am also on the edge of buying note 4. I am actually using z3 right now and the reason I would be switching is the camera. It is not so good as it looks on the paper and the only reason why I would be changing.
Everything else I like a lot and I actually don't like Samsung as a brand and almost hate touchwiz so the change is not easy..

Yes! Just go for the note 4 mate that is a top notch android phone.. With a good built quality, camera are also good specially on outdoors but comparing in low light shot iphone camera is still on the top. Battery are great now with fast charging and ultrapower saving mode.. A lot of features and customization (cuz android) also the spen!
And those beautifully 2k display man you can never go wrong

Yeah the AT&T version right not cant be rooted but I have been following a few threads where people are working on it now but there is not ETA as to where the AT&T version will be rooted, I am also desperately needing root. I think there is also a thread where people are using AT&T service on a T-Mobile phone but there are some disadvantages I think, There should be a thread in the AT&T Note 4 section with all those concerns. But the T-Mobile version can be rooted. If you want a rooted phone and also great quality all around, I would say my next option would be the G3. Very easy to root and also has a great camera. I just couldn't get with LG interface over Android.

Yeah Touchwiz is what it is at this point. I also hate it with a passion but like I said with a few tweaks and I run Nova Launcher, it can be very smooth and right now I have no complaints. I cant speak of the Sony Z series as that is one series I have not yet played with or owned yet.

You are correct my friend, Even though in the beginning I was leery to switch away from the 6 Plus that was a great phone for me, The Note 4 just has too many features to pass up!
Gaming is good for me using my exynos variant
I switched to the Note 4 (Exynos) coming from an OPO. I wouldn't recommend the OPO since it has serious QA issues. My unit had this awful touchscreen issue which rendered the screen unusable when it got too hot. And it's a PITA to RMA it AFAIK.
I'm really liking the Note 4 a lot. Coming from stock or close to stock Android (I owned a Nexus 4 and 5 before the OPO), TouchWiz doesn't feel nearly as bloated as before. Everything is smooth and performance in games is top notch.
It feels great in the hand, the S Pen is quite handy, the screen is absolutely fantastic, the camera is great... My only complaint would be the rear facing speaker.
Samsung really won me over with the Note 4. Glad I picked this one up instead of the Nexus 6.

Simply put it's just the best device on the market right now. Nothing comes close to it. Go for it, you won't regret it like you did the iPhone
after deciding that the note series is the best phablet, you still have to choose between
Exynos Note4, Snapdragon Note4 or Note Edge
after using exynos note4 for sometime, I am considering switching to note edge for the cool curved screen. The feeling of curved glass on thumb is amazing.
I would suggest a in store hands on with the Note Edge first, than go read the exynos vs snapdragon thread on the note 4 if you dont like the Edge.
good luck
I bought The note 4 after long times of researching and I absloutely love it. I own The 6 plus as Well but I like The Note 4 more. I like carrying both operating systems in my pocket. I use the Note for work and taking pics and use 6 plus For chatting and connecting with friends
If you want to use the Gear VR - only Snapdragon runs smooth because of the better GPU

[Q] Galaxy s8 [Exynos] ( Debloat & custom ROM) VS One Plus 5 128gb

So Here is the question:
Galaxy s8 [Exynos] ( Debloat & custom ROM) OR One Plus 5 128gb?
If you had those 2 options what would you choose. I think most of us here would agree that Samsung got A lot of bloatware in phones....
Without thinking the price difference. One plus 5 is faster than s8 and lasts longer. OP5 got almost pure android and is bloatware free.
Nevermind OnePlus 5, I came to the S8 from a 3T but I'm seriously considering going back to my 3T.
Looks like you already made a choice. Oneplus always had wifi and 4g speed issues. Maybe they fixed it in the OP5....also OP's camera is not what they said it would be at all. Keep that in mind
Trimis de pe al meu SM-G950F folosind Tapatalk
Op5 doesn't have a good camera. No wireless charge no water resistance no iris no sd card not sharp display as samsumg. If those things are not important to u then it's ur choice I used to have custom Rom Custom kernel into my old device but with s8 plus I dobt need anymore plus I love battery life in my phone.i had T3 when comparing my s8 plus I dobt wanna look in that screen . That's my opinion.

You are not scared not to drop it? I mean its all Glass.
I dont care for Iris also internal memory is faster than SD and with 128GB Is more than enough. I like the screen in s8 a lot but I think I will brake it for sure. Even with a cover, IT'S curved... Looks awesome tho.
I don't think that the Battery life in s8 is better than op5 with all that bloatware.
I came to s8 place because deep down I like the op5 for the smoothness and faster ROM. I don't know if you can get the same with a custom rom/kernel in S8 though.
If you could compare a OP3T with the S7 ( custom rom debloat etc etc ) what phone would be faster/ last longer?
I think Bixby is a waste of RAM and needs to be killed. ( With fire )
I'm not scared to drop it I have very thin case it protects corners and from scratches for me sd card is important battery life is amazing im heavy user I have tones of apps and games. I already disabled all debloat apps like 50 of them plus bixby services and bixby button with package disabler without root.so bixby is not a problem or any other bloatware caz they are disabled phone runs smooth fluid it's been 2 months it just run as it was out of the box.
Well I had the OP3, just sent back my OP5 and currently using a 950F. If your fun is running benchmarks and flashing different ROMs every other day (as I used to) then get the OP5. I can tell you as an everyday driver I enjoy the S8 way more. Form Factor, display, IP68, VR and the AOD. I just took some awesome underwater video last weekend and my daughter was using it with VR. I really wanted the OP5 but they just didn't up their game enough this year for me to keep it. I like the S8 so much I just bought another for 450 with a junk phone trade-in. Cheaper than an OP5. To each their own though

I Think you are right. I do not care about the water res( be careful one day you will kill your phone with water ) or the VR but the AOD the Samsung case with LED and that awesome curve screen look awesome.
But I have to change ROM/Debloat, Buy 40-50 EURO case and a Screen Protector.
I Don't change phones that often I keep them for 4-6 years.
wow, seriouly I don't even keep a phone 4 months never mind 4 years. I am an addict though and freely admit it. I am on the Essential list but won't buy it until I see reviews. My gut is tellimg me the Pixel 2 by LG will be my next phone if it's kin to the G6 but nicer. I've never spent $900 on a single phone but this might be the one I do.

is the S5 still a good choice today?

Hello folks.
I'm looking to replace my current cell phone. It needs to be an unlocked CDMA (Sprint) phone. Things that are important to me:
high quality screen
processing power
decent storage
Things that aren't that important to me:
camera
I have a price limit of $150. Given the above, I am looking at:
Moto E4
Galaxy S5 (refurbished)
Galaxy J3 Emerge
Moto G4 Play
All of them have 5" screens, but the S5 has the highest resolution (the rest are 1280x720). The S5 also has the highest clock rate.
My concern is that the S5 is using technology from 4 years ago, while the rest are more recent. Should that be a concern, or is the S5 the best option here?
Thanks!

in my opinion, for this expense and one of the best!
I use a Samsung Galaxy S5 Neo and everything works fine.
2 weeks ago there was an update for the S5 over OTA. It is still alive and good.
In USA the normal S5 is still a smartphone that is one of the bestsellers.
I have no need to get another phone.
And the original S5 is better than my neo.

I would go with the S5...
Amoled screen, wireless charging, fingerscan...16mp cam..
Put LOS or RR and youll get the best deal...
Or try a xiaomi mia1
Hello, had a galaxy s5 for around 3 years. My unit had a bit of a network issue, which sullied my experience, so be careful when buying a refurb!
Also, if processing power is important to you, you should note that it has constant slowdowns/stutters and, though not as often, crashes. It also heats up pretty quick and has mediocre battery life, draining pretty fast with any decent usage. The chipset really does not hold up compared to mid range chipsets now imo. Near the time I upgraded, it became nearly unusable for a bit whenever i turned the wifi on, though a factory reset and a sparser app library has alleviated the worst aspects of using the phone. It might be powerful specwise, but in irl use I find newer midrange chips outperform it in day to day use.
I recently upgraded to a redmi note 5 (china) and it was an upgrade in every way. From build to smoothness to battery life (and both cameras but you don't care about that). It also has the 6' display while retaining the same width as my s5, thanks to the 18:9 display. The aspect ratio is great in all apps that aren't games and in general UI use. It also has oreo out of the box and will get updates in the future, unlike the s5.
The redmi 5 plus(china) could also be a replacement that's cheaper, but I can't vouch for the screen on that one. The redmi note 5 has a bright lcd that looks really good. It's not amoled, but the transition hasn't bothered me at all, it's quite excellent! I've gotten compliments on the screen from many friends who have seen it in person as well.
So, yeah, look into the phone and see if your budget can be adjusted. Shoot for the 3/32 GB which is a steal imo. Oh, and it has a micro sd card slot, just like the s5, so storage won't be an issue. Another plus with these phones is that they actually have a fingerprint scanner that's not trash - another thing from the past that does not hold up.
I looked up the prices for these phones and they seem to be out of the 150$ budget, so, if the budget is rigid you might want to look into the redmi note 4, which can be found for 160$ and has all the same internals as the redmi 5 plus. I cannot vouch for how good the screen is, but it's 1080P IPS LCD. I would personally consider it a better phone to buy than the Galaxy S5 as well (working fingerprint scanner, larger screen, equivalent if not better chipset usability wise).
Anyway, I'm not really as knowledgable as most people in xda but I am a s5 owner, so I figured I'd chip in and try to help.
While S5 is still a nice phone, it is not worth buying one at this time. The best option would be to get current/last year mid end phone. Look at the local market websites, maybe there are good deals. Xiaomi redmi 5 plus is nice phone for low price, also redmi note 4 is nice phone too, you will get better peformance than S5, or at very least the same, more ram, much better battery life due to bigger battery and better chipset, you will get android updates.
S5 is still a great phone.. Do not buy refurbished.. you can find great deals on Ebay.. My cost $110 no dings, or dents or scratches.. Phone actually had very little call time on it.. Moto's IMOP are junk.
Hi ,
I personally think you should go for a newer phone like Honor 8. The main problem i would have with an S5 is the fact that it only has 16GB internal memory. Apart from that it is still a great phone.
With those 16 GB you will always struggle if you want to install many applications and keep Whatsapp data on your phone.

It does support SD Cards up to 128 GB though. I'm a kinda heavy user and never had problems with storage, always around 3-4 GB free in internal. Though I did put my games on my card obviosly (there was some app that does this, I forgot name).
i picked mine up monday for 45$. cracked rear camera glass. still takes photos fine.
anyway, i love the thing. i went from an s7 to an iphone 7 then to and old moto then to this. i love the effing thing. i get 2 days in low power mode with the original battery. im hunting for a parts phone now.
the s5 has issues from what ive heard but so far, im running fine.
After 2 weeks using the S5 of my wife I have to reverse my opinion. I installed latest lineageos 14.1 on it and it works like a charm. With lineageos there is still a lot of internal memory left for apps. Bluetooth which is often a problem for custom roms seems to work pretty well.
I've actually recently bought an S5, and although it is not the best option, the support for it has been huge over time and its still going on with amazing roms like AEX or CrDroid.
The only part I dislike is the storage, because yea 16GB are little to me. And the fact that it is refurbished is good contrary to what people assume, because, then that means its already fixed, you wont have to go through that pain as you would with a new one waiting to fail, that's how it is, you have more chances of a new one having issues than a refurbished one because that one already had them and its already fixed. On the other hand, "refurbished" doesnt always mean "it broke and we fixed it", usually its because people return it to the store, the package is open, they cant sell them as new, even if theres nothing wrong with it, it automatically falls to the "refurbished" category and not many people think of that.
Now, the Moto G4 is actually a better option, it has a good performance, but you should opt for the Plus version with 32GB internal
So, I'd recommend the G4 Plus, if you cant buy that, then the S5 is the way to go
S5 is still going strong.
I would not change it, but I need a dual SIM phone now.
So if you can get one, go for it.
However, I am not aware of CDMA capabilities or tested it, sorry. I have European model...
My uncle gave me his old S5 back in January to replace my dying S4 LTE-A, and with LineageOS 15.1, it feels like a brand new phone
im now rooted and running the latest lineage 14.1 and its awesome.
12 hours of battery, 4 hours of SOT and no issues. these nougat kernels are pretty nice. lol
people talking about storage, flash Lineage, have a clean sd card in and use the SD card as adptive storage. it shows it as all internal storage and works like a charm.

would you recommend the S5 as a backup to the Note 4?
I still have an S5 as a backup phone. Main phone Xiaomei Redmi Note 4x which I bought due to its superior battery life. The S5 imo is still good as backup phone and has an excellent camera (if you stick to TouchWiz based roms).

Hello!
I can definately assure you that:
A. Off the phones you have listed AND
B. Your stated price range
The S5 is your choice!!
It is amazing!! You will not be dissapointed! Unlimited battery life (multiple batteries), screen resolution, clock speed etc etc.
I am currently typing from one! Lol, I have the OnePlus 3 and my good ol' trusty S5! Some tips:
You stated about being older firmware (S5 is marshmallow) whilst others are nougat..... The S5 is one of the most developed phones ever! even still!!! In literally 5 minutes and little knowledge you can flash a custom recovery and then a custom ROM, no root needed. I have used the S5 since the early days and have used pretty much EVERY rom, honestly!
I can suggest resurrection remix as THE most customisable, they have features beyond any other! They have 100% stable nougat build and Oreo also, I use them both. In fact we have multiboot so can run 2 ROMs at once just choose at boot!
We have lots of kernels if you choose to root like myself, this way you can have 2.1 amp quick charge, boot windows or Linux on PC from phone, double battery time, gaming performance and over clocking to 2.84 GHz!!!! The phone is a beast!! It is reliable as hell too! I have had mine rooted for 4 years, overclocked and its given me no worries....And waterproof with a removable battery!!!!!!
Hope this helps, any questions at all please ask, happy to help

Hello.
Please make recomendation for Nougat and Oreo firmwares

Should I get the 8 Pro vs 8T / 9

Hello All,
I am upgrading my 6T and trying to get some feedback regarding if the 8 Pro is still a good value a year later and worth buying. I know that there are 2 newer OnePlus phones out there, but just trying to get some feedback. Rooting is important to me and I will typically find a ROM and Kernel I like and stick with it. Obviously, the 9 isn't going to have any support for a while. What about the 8T? Is the 8 Pro a better phone than the 8T?
Thanks, in advance.
If you are not anti-samsung. I think you should go for Galaxy S21+. I'm not very happy with my OnePlus 8 Pro, saving some money to upgrade Samsung. They disabled photochrome, they are not keeping their promises about software updates. Screens has too many issues, screens are made by Samsung I know but Samsung's RMA is much better. My father was has Galaxy Note 8 and he had screen burn-in and they replaced it under a hour. We just took a burger and they replaced all around chassic and screen of phone after we came back to Samsung Center, living in Turkey btw I'm not sure they have this quick repair service everywhere.
And OnePlus 9 is just scam for me they are slapping Hasselblad brand to everywhere but Hasselblad isn't designed their camera they just calibrated colors at software level. OnePlus phones are really solid in many ways but they are trying to sell their devices same price with Samsung's. I think the only disadvantage of Samsung is they are cutting software updates too soon and some people does not like OneUI much. Btw If you have questions about 8Pro I can answer them I'm still using it.

Yes it is but in Samsung root or unlocking bootloader instantly voids your warranty unrecoverable way. Actually after Android 11 hiding root is nearly impossible or you need to do so much work to hide root from banking apps, most of them fails.

I've had my Pro 8 for a year with no display or heat issues! It's still a great device with good XDA members support and development! Cheers
Dont buy samsung phone unless you can get snapdragon variant. Even then you should go for 8Pro just because it's officially supported on lineageos - which is really nice thing to have if you decide to go that path.
Then again, if you have samsung accessories like watch active 2/3 then staying on samsung's ecosystem will bring you some benefits.
Things to note.
If you root the Sammy you will add a 1 to your bootloader counter otherwise known as blowing your efuse chip, you're losing warranty, Samsung will blame anything you have wrong with your phone on this, even if it's completely unrelated, that's a lot of money btw.
With OnePlus it's reversible, Sammy is not.
And let's have it right,, it's a Samsung, there's a lot to dislike, If it's the exynos version, lol you've just bought a turd, it's not even the same phone as the US / south Korean version.
If it were me in your situation i would go with the 9 pro, cameras are superb, the device will make more of the processor / GPU that the Sammy will for sure, dual SIM, probably faster 5G, lighter OS, quicker updates, much better community on XDA, more custom ROMs, better kernels, better screen, faster screen, better audio, better gaming, the list goes on and on.
Keep in mind the S21 and S21+ have display issues as well, but it's software based. Samsung calibrated the displays horribly, where Vivid is WAY oversaturated, and Natural is washed out and dull. The Ultra doesn't have the issue, nor does any model of the S20, outside of the S20 FE.
The FE, S21 and S21+ are STILL waiting for fixes, been this way since release for all of them.
I have a spare S21 I'm debating selling to get an 8 Pro, but I'm really hesitant simply based on size and OP's update/software/general issues.

The vast majority of people who own an 8 pro do not have issues mate.
Software (updates anyway) has been prompt.
Overheating, screen issues etc, every phone has these issues, 99% of people on each phone won't, but that 1% will definitely be vocal and so would I.
Chances are though you won't get a faulty device..

Thanks. So I can get the 8 Pro for $599 + tax, etc. At this price is it worth it even if I only use it for a year? I am coming from the 6T

The 8 Pro had been around for a year which you can read about on this forum. The 9 is still too new to form any final conclusions.... Your choice

I would never buy a last gen phone when current is available. That being said the jump from 7 to 8 pro was significant, absolutely nothing wrong with the 7 pro at all, but I just feel that the leap to the 9 pro is more of a tweak.
Improvements mostly all around, but development would be lacking compared to the 8 and 8 pro until it gathers speed, knowing the OnePlus community it will pick up. Devs will move on to it.
The choice for me would be obvious but that's me.
CPU and GPU on the 9 are superior, no amount of tweaks will combat that difference.
8 Pro is the best from the 8 series. 8T is 6 months newer than 8 pro, but not as good.
9 is one year newer, so you got 1 year plus at the updates. But if you want the best buy 9 pro. Again the best in series.
NO, absolute NO to Samsung ! The best phone at Bloatware !

Hello All,
I am upgrading my 6T and trying to get some feedback regarding if the 8 Pro is still a good value a year later and worth buying.

I got the 8pro. Great phone. Not a huge fan of the curved display, but that's my only complaint. Love the phone. Let me know if you have any other questions.
I did get a used like new 9 Pro which is awesome so far!
The 8 Pro is still a beast even after a year!
