ExFat file format support - Fire HD 8 and HD 10 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Fire HD 10 (9th generation)
Fire os 7.3.1.7
Ok really? Amazon blocked file support for ExFat? Is there a way around this at all? I have a 64 GB I was planning to put some movies on for my next flight. But the 4 GB file size limit of Fat32 is hampering my plans...
Installed the Play store following the guide here. Boy - I'd love to get AOSP or something on here but that isn't looking so good right yet. Anyway - any tips or tricks to get movies going would be appreciated.
Regards

I use exFAT/NTFS for USB by Paragon Software from Playstore (actually I downloaded it from apkpure first to avoid the store) to manage my movies on NTFS formatted HDDs. The settings section of the app shows I can access NTFS, exFAT, HFS+, FAT32, extFS.
Actually there was a limited number to mount my drive for free and when it was over I had to pay a small fee (I hope it is not something regularly, have to check again) and register via my Google account which meant I had go install Playstore to get access to my Google account on my Fire HD 10.
It works fine for me. Use it with Total Commander. I tried to find a solution first from Amazon Appstore but failed. I extended the Fire HD 10 internal memory btw with a 400GB SanDisk MC which is ext4 formatted with no relevant file size limit for movie files.
Let me know if it works for you. My next project is to do the same with my Fire TV Cube.
BR Martin

Hey Submonte - thanks for the idea. I downloaded paragon but I think it is angled toward USB mounted drives like the external hdd you mentioned. But slipping the micro SD card in - doesn't do anything.
Hmm...

Ah I see. You want to use your microSD card as Portable memory. I excluded that option for me (but never trying the exFAT app in this way), got a Tutuo USB C OTG adapter (micro SD and SD and USB A) and set the memory option of my Fire HD 10 for the SanDisk card to internal memory. So I copy movies from external micro SD or HDD (mounted by the Paragon USB app) to the extended internal memory (Android: Adoptable memory). Of course in this case I cannot take out the card and put it into a laptop or so, it is not portable, internally formatted as ext 4, but has no file size limit.

Okay - I might see a ray of hope here... So I get "Adopted Storage"... So if I power off the tab - can I remove it - mount as ext4 on my linux laptop and copy over all the files and then power it back up? If so - how crazy is that - it won't recognize it when I format it in my laptop as ext4...
I read somewhere it is a big FU from Amazon on no way they want you watching HD movies with out buying them from Amazon. Thought that was ranting - but if it supports ext4 "internally" but purposely blocks it in this way??
Anyway - thanks for the reply. Gonna make some tests...

Adopting the storage in Android/Fire OS settings means the micro SD will be reformatted from exFAT or FAT32 to ext4 (or f2fs eventually in other cases - Samsung) and tied to the particular device (the Fire HD 10 in your case) by a key stored in the device. The internal built in storage (eg 64GB in my HD 10) will be extended and the micro SD memory an integrated part of it. Provided you unmount the card and remount it the device will recognize it again eventually, but no warranty. It is not dedicated to be portable even if you format it ext4 on your linux pc. Therefore I chose the way I described.
By the way I use Prime Video on this and other devices (and many other Amazon services) and use also their offers and buy movies for 50% off or so. Their Echos and so on are great. It is their right to restrict the interfaces in their devices (Still we get a lot for our money). However I wanted to use my tablet universally and do what I want with it. I am a supporter of open standards since my first steps in computing during 70s and 80s, hard and soft. It remained as a hobby. Let me know if you make progress. BR Martin

No joy. I inserted another 64GB SD into the Fire HD 10 and told it to use it as internal
Using the USB cable I copied an 8GB video over to the tablet. Shut the tablet down and took out the card and looked at it in Gparted in Linux
The card has 2 partitions
16 MB partition FAT32
59.46 GB partition file format is unknown
The video is not on the card. It is on the tablet though. Leads me to believe that the unknown format might still have a 4GB limit.
Oh and as for my comments on Amazon. Not really dissing this at all. This is a slick tablet for the price or heck - twice the price. My commentary really was that standard Android OS supports read/write of exfat and maybe ext4?. Just wish that Amazon OS did.

Tks for your report! Let me try something out, too. Need some days to get back to you, my holidays are over.

I don't think there is answer to this. I have made 100 experiments and really only 2 things work. I can format the card FAT32 and put it into the card reader or I can format a thumb drive FAT32 and put into an adapter and into the USB C port. Any other formats in the SD card slot or via OTG on the USB C port all fail to read the file system.
In contrast - my Samsung tablet seems to accept FAT32 and exFAT formatted SD cards into the slot. It excepts FAT32 and NTFS formated thumb drives via OTG on the USB C port. Really - NTFS.
For fun I installed a terminal on the Fire HD and tried typing:
Code:
$ sudo apt-get install exfat-fuse exfat-utils
But the terminal doesn't support sudo. Probably not even close to the correct commands for the FireHD - but it adds support for exfat in Debian linux distros if not included.
Anyway - I'm still looking but for now I am transcoding some blue-rays to make smaller files. Just seems like wasted time.

I also need exfat or ntfs for SDHC cards, for few amazon fire hd 10 2019.
as I understand, Microsoft is asking for a few dollars for a exfat or ntfs licenses,
so no support in stock firmware.
write if there is news. thanks/

I found a solution to get a 128 GB micro SD card working in my Fire HD 10 11th generation. The card must be formatted as FAT32, otherwise it will not work.
I accomplished it by attaching the card to the USB-C port on the tablet (using a white USB-C adapter that came with my Pixel phone and Transcend USB card reader). The tablet detected this card and allowed me to format it. When I connected the card formatted in the tablet to PC it showed it was formatted as FAT32 and the total capacity showed correctly as 128 GB.
FAT32 maximum partition size is 2TB unfortunately Windows did not allow me to format my card as FAT32. Card needs to be formatted on Android device to be useful in Fire HD 10.

Partitions in wm?

Hello everybody,
Does wm support partitions?
So can I split up my 8 gb sd card into two partitions of 4?
Or does wm not support this?
Thanks!
Hope you don't mind me asking, but what for ?
E.g.
Partition one:
Haret > Android
Partition two:
Multimedia stuff + wm
or
Partiton one:
Multimedia
Partition 2
Program files and stuff
There is no need as both Andriod and WM6.x can see Fat/Fat32, which I presume your SD card is formatted.
If you want to separate your media from any programs you want to install on the sd card just use a different folder.
Plugging your SD card into you TP2 is the same as plugging it into your desktop / laptop whatever the OS.
Would you partition a SD card that was plugged into your desktop ?
If you want to partition the SD, try it and let us know... however i think that it will appear as 2 storage cards in explorer.
I will give it a try
It is possible but not usable...
I also searched around on the internet and it works
But I am back at one sd card since I find folders easier than 2 storage cards.

I know exactly where you're comin' from, man. After I get a 16GB class 6 microSDHC, I intend to partition ~8.5GB as NTFS ('cause I'd like the the max capacity to hold a full DVD DL disk) to handle larger file transfers btwn desk/laptops. And, I'd still have a whoppin' ~7.5GB to be used by the tele as FAT32...'just haven't made that microSDHC purchase yet, but I'd imagine it to be plausible.

I remember some time ago on Aximsite or another older related site reading how to format NTFS and use a Compact Flash card on Windows Mobile. I did it on my Axim and Ipaq at the time, and kind of remember it working.

I know. However, if there're two partitions, NTFS @ ~8.5GB and FAT32 @ ~7.5GB, then I'd imagine that Windows would see the storage card as two drives, while Windows Mobile would see the 16GB, storage card as ~7.5GB. Anyone, please, do correct me if I'm wrong in my assumption.
This has made me wonder, too. Why does WM refer to "Storage Card 1" occasionally when inserting/unplugging memory cards...? It kinda implies that there is room for multiple cards at the same time...????
Chris
i partitioned my 16 gig hard drive and installed linksys on one partition so i can plug into my computer and dual boot from my phone...
i dont really see a reason to create multiple partitions to have the same function as folders (ie seperating media from doc, ext...)

You would not gain anything by formatting NTFS other than the ability to set NTFS permissions in Windows. A movie can be stored on a FAT/FAT32 partition with no ill affect on usability. Also, when you purchase any type of storage, the actual formatted size is usually smaller than the advertised size. So if you buy a 16GB card, you will most likely end up with around 15GB max of usable space. I would not plan on having 7.5GB of free space after creating a 8.5GB partition.

No, you'd also be able to support files larger than 2GB. And, I know it wouldn't be 7.5GB, that's why I'd said about (~). Prob more like 6.8GB, or so.

I know NTFS doesn't work on Windows Mobile. However, I would assume that if you were to make two partitions, one NTFS, and the other FAT32, the Windows Mobile device would show the FAT32 partition, while a Windows dsktp would show the microSDHC as two partitions, NTFS and FAT32. I've ordered a 16GB microSDHC Class 6, and I'll post my results after I receive, partition and format the card.
Okay. So've received my 16GB microSDHC Class 6, and have partitioned and formatted with Paragon Partition Manager Pro v9.0, and have...
Partition 1 - microSDHC N, 8.61GB NTFS
Partition 2 - microSDHC, 6.24GB FAT32
The device sees the FAT32 partition, as intended. Windows (Vista), however, shows only the 1st partition (NTFS) of the microSD, even when using the device in Disk Drive USB mode. Disk Management sees the FAT32 partition, but no matter what options I select, I'm met with
Code:
An unexpected error has occurred. Check the System Event Log for more information on the error...
At this point, I just need Windows to allow me to give the partition a drive letter. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
in the start search bar type computer managment then go to storage/disk management select the disk and then right click and change letter.
thats supposed to let you change the letter i have to deal with this alot at work with all the network drives and my externals
hope this helps

I'd tried this believing that Windows only needed to assign a drive letter, but to no avail. :\

64Gb MicroSD card.

I've received an installed my new SansDisk 64Gb MicroSD card.
Transferred some files into it in my desktop and had go with it in the 7.7.
It does not seem to be recognizing the card...Does not even appear as "External Storage" in "My Files"
For those of you who reported success using 64Gb cards, what's the file system in your card?...exFAT?
Thanks!
XK
Reformatted it as ntfs and install ntfsSd (thanks oyaxai for the great app!). You need root anyway.

Installed!...and WORKING !
Sweet, sweet, sweet...I can now see MKVs over 4GBs...
Thank you so much!

(EDIT: Victory claimed too soon, I am afraid... ntfsSd did mount the MicroSD successfully, initially...but them I unmounted and removed the card and copied all the content from my previous card into it, in Windows.
Now,ntfsSd won't mount the card, anymore.
Meanwhile, I've managed to get the 7.7 to recognize the card in exFAt, and reformatted it in the 7.7.
I think I'll leave NTFS alone for a while now...

I loaded a sandisk 64GB. Not sure what file system it was but it was detected as an external disk but not able to mount. Even USB Mass Storage Watcher app, which I love, could not mount it. This really annoyed me since I had spent a good 2 or so hours transferring files onto it via my laptop.
So I formatted it via the tab's settings, which I presume converted it to FAT. I have no problems now, but i also don't use mkvs that exceed the 4GB. I would be interested to hear other people's experiences with NTFS and if they are experiencing the same problems as Khan
Format as ntsf
How do you format it as ntsf? I'm not able to do this. The device automatically formats the SD as fat32.

This is an known issue: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=22617892&postcount=13
- Once unmounted, even after you mount again manually,
Android OS don't detect the sdcard.
You can access it with file managers or other apps,
but stock camera and settings app don't.

That means you may not want to unmount ever after. I know that is not the perfect solution you are looking for.
Also, for your information, 7.7 does not mount exFat (I might be wrong, inform me if you could). The first time you insert an exFat formatted sdcard, it would prompt for reformatting. Your card will be formatted into FAT32.
Yes, it is not very practical, that way...I'll forget NTFS until someone comes up with a more polished solution...now that it has been shown that HC can, indeed, work with NTFS it will be only a matter of time before a more comprehensive solution appears, be it for HC or ICS...I'll wait.
As for the remaining solution, this is my full story:
1. The card is a Sandisk MicroSDXC I Ultra (class 6). It is natively formatted in exFAT.
2. I took it right out of the box, put in the included adapter, inserted it in USB in my desktop, running Windows 7 and transferred some files.
3. Put it in the 7.7 and nothing happened. It was not detected by the system, no incompatibility messages, nothing.
4. I removed it from the 7.7 and tried to format it in the desktop PC. The only otpions Windows would offer were NTFS or exFAT.
5. I formatted it in NTFS and tried to use the card with the "Drive Mount" app in the 7.7. The app would detect and "force mount" the card but the 7.7 file manager wouldn't report it as existing (NOTE: I kept "Drive Mount" installed, as it can still be useful in the future, when using the USB feature to deal with my photo CF cards...This is the only area remaining for me to fully break-in my 7.7, as I am still waiting for the OTG USB reader to arrive).
6. Making good use of your pointer, I installed the "ntfsSd" app, with initial success, as reported. Then the problem in reference manifested itself.
7. I then reformatted the card back in the desktop PC, selecting exFAT as the file system but refrained from adding any content.
8. The 7.7 now recognized the card, displayed the system incompatibility message and I was able to evoke the format option from within HC. The tab reformatted the card in FAT32 and I am now using it with no further problems.
9. So, the thing is (...if I understood it correctly...): When getting a new 64Gb card insert it directly into the 7.7, without using it anywhere else first. It can recognized a non-compatible file system but it won't recognize the very same file system if there's already any content on the card.

Need a FAT32 format tool?

If you need a program to format a FAT32 flash drive that is larger than 32 GBs, i.e., a 64 GBs flash drive. Here's a link to the Verbatim website where you can get the tool for Windows including Windows 7.
http://www.verbatim.com/index/searc...form_submit.x=13&basic_search_form_submit.y=5
If it doesn't link then go to the verbatim.com website. Do a search in it for FAT 32. The page with the FAT32 tool download should come up.
I bought a Centon 64 GB flash drive and it came already formatted with NTFS. That's great but I wanted the most transportability and FAT32 format would be better to transfer files back and forth between my PS3, computer and Acer Iconia A500.
The price for the Centon 64 GB drive from Tiger Direct was only $29.99, no taxes and no shipping costs. Not bad, but it is a slow flash drive. Now that I got it formatted for FAT32 I'm happy. BTW, I have found when you have a FAT32 formatted flash drive attached to the USB port and you do a nandroid backup, it defaults to the USB port instead of the SD card I have in the SD slot. However, if the USB flash drive is formatted with NTFS it doen't see it for the backup and goes instead to the SD card. You can have your backups saved externally from the Acer Iconia A500.
Enjoy the FAT32 formatter. It wasn't easy to find. There's a commerical product for $40 that you can sample, which will only format to 8 GBs with trial version. It's the one that keeps coming up in searches for "NTFS to FAT32". Don't bother with that junk. Get the free one from Verbatim.
couldnt you just use gparted live cd to format, but good find anyways
I use the Easius partition manager... It was free online when I got it but not sure now...
Thanks for the feedback
I don't know much about the Android system so I didn't know about the "gparted live cd" or about the "Easius partition manager." I'm more familar with Windows so I usually look for the solutions through that system. They didn't come up in any internet searches I did. Partition Magic did and I had an older copy but i couldn't get it to work with Windows 7. Then I found the free Verbatim program. Great free program.
I'll keep them in mind if I have any problems in the future.
I had ran into this problem a while back with a external hard drive that came NTFS formatted and I needed it to be FAT32 for reading by a PS3. Usually the hard drive manufacturer has some program to convert his drive. The problem is it only works for their hard drive and they won't let it work on others. There was another free FAT32 formatter that I had previously used but that one wouldn't work on my Centon 64 GB flash drive. Searching the internet was a pain because they kept coming up with this program you had to pay for. On Pirates Bay, they had a crack for it, but it was no good. I was going to try and use a MAC to format but I found this program buried in a discussion about FAT32. Initially it didn't recognize the flash drive but later after I must have rebooted the computer it saw the flash drive and it worked.
Thanks for the feedback.
Use Minitool Partition Wizard, its freeware and for windows. Best windows partition editor I have ever used. I'm sure it can format that drive for you.
http://www.partitionwizard.com/free-partition-manager.html
CORRECTION: Best disk partitioner for windows that I have ever used,
Easius partition manager is also a windows app.... I used it to repartition my laptop as the mongrel only had c partition. Works on all hdds and sd cards....

Mount SDXC Card

So some of us have already gotten an SDXC 64GB card to work in our SD slot as posted at the Lenovo forums. Everyone's mileage seems to vary on the best method for this, I just wanted to share the way that I was able to do it after much trial and error, in a pretty clear and concise way.
Basically, just as with USB drives, it all comes down to formatting any external storage in FAT32 for the TPT to read it. The trick is getting an SDXC card into FAT32, and readable by the Thinkpad Tablet. If it's not done right, the tablet will just sit on "Preparing SD Card" forever. I've tried all kinds of PC HDD and Flash card tools to do this, and the one that finally worked was Easeus Partition Master Home Edition which is a free version (download.cnet.com/Easeus-Partition-Master-Home-Edition/3000-2248_4-10863346.html)
I formatted the card with EaseUS and TPT recognized it right away, showing 61.84GB capacity
Here's how: First be careful to click only the SD card you want to format in the list of drives or you could format a hard drive by mistake (check your drive letter!). There may be another small unlabeled partition on the card, don't worry about that. Click Format Partition (on the left), select file system FAT32, click OK, and then click Apply (big check mark at top of main UI). (If the SD card doesn't appear in the list, you may need to use the SDFormatter first, details below).
BTW, the tool to get your SDXC back to its original state (if things get too screwed up or you need to return it) is the official SDFormatter (sdcard.org/downloads/formatter_3/). You may also need to run this on the card first before using EaseUS if you've been mucking around with it and EaseUS does not pick it up.
Hope this saves some headaches.
(Sorry for the truncated URLs, I'm a new poster though I've been around XDA for years, so the system won't let me post proper links...that's what I get for trying to be helpful...)

[FIX] sandisk 64gb micro sd card

Like alot of you, I recently had alot of trouble with my sandisk 64gb micro sd card. this fix is pretty easy but it worked for me! so check it out:
you need two programs: SD formatter( can be found on the sandisk website) and easeus partiton master( you can use any program that lets you format partitions)
you will also need the sd card adapter to put you micro in, and an sd card reader
Step 1: connect your sandisk 64gb microsd card to the computer with the adapter it came with in the box. My laptop has the sd card reader built in
I dont think it will work unless you connect it this way.
Step 2: open sd formatter, it should have recognized your card if not click refresh. after its recognized click Options and set format type to full (overwrite) format the sd card. this will take a long while so you might wanna go watch tv or something?
step 3 : after its done formatting open partition master and right click on the sd card and format it to fat32. your going to have to click apply on the top right hand corner for it to work
you should be set. DONT FORMAT IN THE ANDRIOD SETTINGS. for some reason when ever i fixed the micro and tried formatting it in my phone it would mess up everything thing again.
I keep a 32 gb in my s4 now and use my 64 in my note 10.1 because i need the space there more. Let me know if this works for you!

It really depends on the troubles you have, most of them are some kind of incompatibility with the S4 firmware and the 64GB SD card and formating this will not help. My issue was each time i'd put music on my SD, my system status would trip to custom, also my music would not always show up at boot. This has been a recurring problem with the sandisk cards no matter how i formated it. And yes, i did use SDFormater 4.0 and still had the issue. My only solution was to get a Samsung 64GB SD and no issues since
Sometimes mine removes itself, but a media rescan or reboot fixes it. Doesn't really bother me.
I use a 64gb PNY class10 and its flawless for me.I think the issue is witg the sandisk bran.

Figured this is a good thread to post my experience.
I had a MicroSD card I thought was bad. What happened was I was formatting the device to ext4 at the time using a older microSD USB adapter i had. Basically, the microSD card reader died while it was in that process. Using a microSD > SDAdater and a built in SD card slot on my laptop I was unable to format the drive in Windows or MacOS. (I was formatting the device via the USB reader on my Desktop in Ubuntu). Ubuntu does not see my card reader on my laptop so I was unable to use that). I thought I killed it. It was a SanDisk microSDXC 64gb card.
So I ordered a new Samsung microSDXC and a new microSDXC USB card reader. I got them both. New card worked great. I decided to play with the card a bit. Using Ubuntu, gparted specifically, with the new adapter I could no create or modify partitions on the old microSD card. It would fail out every time, different errors for ext4, exFAT and Fat32. So. In Gparted I went to Device > Write new partition table. After I did that I would able to format the drive in Ubuntu to whatever filesystem I wanted, and the card works in the phone, mac, windows, everything.
Just a heads up to help any others with issues. Rewriting the partition table may help if somehow it gets corrupt because of some write fail,
I ve 2 64gb sandisk 10x microsd with Samsung S4 I9005 with Android 4.3. I formatted with android, also Windows 7 64bit with various types of sizes on laptop. However on laptop or on phone after writing some files and disk scanning, it gives many disk errors. I wonder if it is software or microsd hardware problems. There is no problem with 32 gb.
Sent from my GT-I9500 using XDA Premium 4 mobile app
Found the Culprit!
Considering I encountered this write protect error TWICE with the exact same product, and after having read forums that show it's a common problem, I conclude that the problem is with either this specific SanDisk product or a particular batch of this product:
Exact product specs: SanDisk Ultra 64 GB MicroSDXC Class 10 UHS-1 Memory Card with Adapter (SDSDQU-064G-AFFP-A)
These carry a lifetime warranty. A word of advice: if you go for a replacement, ask for a different 64GB model, or try a different size of the same model (I got 2 x 32GB cards instead). If they insist on giving back the exact same model, I'd suggest you use that card anywhere except a smartphone!
