I noticed that on the Non-LTE version, on the backside of the microsd card tray, there is a black sticker where the sim card would go. Is it possible to flash the LTE version onto this tablet and put in a sim card for LTE functionality? How can one confirm if it has the LTE modem in it?
Any insight is appreciated
Seems like it's not that easy:

Just got the SM-P610 and liking it a lot. I noticed that the SD card tray has a spot for a SIM card as well. After looking in the slot it appears to have contacts for a SIM card to be accepted. Upon inserting my SIM and turning on the device it...

Is it cut down?
You cannot put sim tray other way in nexus 4 , it does not slide in . No, sim is not cut, ive got it from carrier and used it before on this phone for about 3 weeks without problems. This is not a sim issue, i have another micro sim from other carrier that i've tried, but it's the same problem.. and both micro sims work on my xperia z, and nokia but nor of them from today are not recognizable in my nexus,,, iv'e looked at the pins in the sim tray, all of them ar not broken, done several factory resets, tried different roms, but nothing helps..

I just bought my N4 yesterday. I had the same issue. It would not recognize any SIM cards. I ended up having to swap it for another one. My SIM is from a different carrier, and has been cut down to micro size. No issues after swaping phones.
My friend have bought S3 Neo 3 days before - in which the second sim card slot is not working. The sim card status in sim card manager saying No Network Card
Refer the screenshot below.
If I switch between sim cards then sim 1 is working perfectly. What does no network card mean??
Please help ASAP.
When I put my sim card into my US cellular Galaxy Note 3 (Model SM-N900R4) I get Invalid Sim Card under notifications. Any way to fix this?
Change sim card .
Know what kind?
My device is i9505 and it should be carrier unlocked, I bought it outside any carrier.
I have this device since mid 2013, with the same carrier and same SIM Card.
I only had 3G, and my SIM Card only supported 4G
Recently I noticed that they don't work anymore with just 3G, everyone with compatible device and SIM Card could use 4G
So I went to my carrier, and bought 4G SIM Card, it's from the same carrier I used for the last 3 years
But when I tried using it, my device said "Invalid SIM Card"...
I asked them to try the SIM Card on one of their devices, and the SIM Card worked, but on my i9505 it says "Invalid SIM Card"
I tested with my old SIM Card, and the device found no problem, but when you get a new SIM Card the old is blocked, the device recognized the old SIM Card but I can't make calls, receive calls, etc, etc...
As using my old SIM it still recognizes, I think it probably isn't a hardware problem...
Does anyone knows what could be causing this, and is it possible to fix?
I'm currently using Imperium LL v13 (Custom ROM)
I tried flashing a newer modem from my carrier based on this firmware:
http://www.sammobile.com/firmwares/download/48432/I9505VJUHOD2_I9505ZTRHOD2_ZTR/
I downloaded the modem from this post:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=61852508#post61852508
But it still says "Invalid SIM Card"
I also tested SIM Cards from some friends that use other carriers, these SIMs worked on my phone, and my SIM worked on all my friends phones, but when I try my SIM on my phone, it doesn't work...
On the screenshot below you can see my baseband version after flashing the newer modem:

I had the same exact problem with my I9505 with my operator digitel ( venezuela) , the only solution i had was to ask them for another type of sim card
So it turns out that Lossadax was probably right, the store that I went probably had a type of sim card that wasn't compatible or they had defective sim cards there
I had to buy another sim card from another store, the connector had different size and layout, and now it's working!
I noticed that the XT1687 US model has card reader contacts installed at both SIM card positions, but it nominally only supports one SIM card and is bundled with a single-SIM tray. Does anyone know or has anyone tried to use the dual SIM tray with this unit successfully?
There is no dual sim on the XT1687. Only sim, and microSD
I had the same thoughts and was wondering if it would work after trying to flash a dual sim variant firmware on the device then replace the single sim tray with one that has two sim slots. The process of flashing sounds risky so until becomes a secondary device, I will shelf the idea.
