USA SM-N9860 users. - Samsung Galaxy Note 20 Ultra Guides, News, & Discu

I'm making this thread specifically for USA users of the SM-N9860 to discuss their experiences using this device with american carriers.

I believe the only other american user is @ekerbuddyeker

Can you send me a screenshot of you software as well as hardware info page. I want to study a bit and see if you can convert it to U1 variant that way you can join rest of us. I also messaged the other American user of this Variant.

No worries

Just changed csc to BRI, not much changed radio wise.

I'm a SM-N9860 user in the US

I've hacked the radio , I have every band open and usable. Mainly gained nr66 nr 71 and 260 , lte 66, I am on n9860 rooted
I have not yet cracked estimate but I'm close, I'm really upset. I'm on chc firmware with chc wwd wwd tgy software, and it's there. I just have to Crack binary to get it on. This is my first root and teaching myself as I go.
Side note u got 986u1 by chance. I use both

Much how better is your signal and connection?

sorry for typo...I meant esim,
I live in west Hollywood area of Los Angeles I have full 5g 5 bars with multiple tower connectivity per cellular pro app, I now have carrier aggregation with 2 and 3dl,
I'm new to this, I just took my 986u1 and went line by line in all modem files and copied all data into my modem files I also disabled Samsung net manager and enabled the default Qualcomm drivers
I noticed I have only 1 spot where I have no service but my 986u1 also has no service
before I did this I never seen 5g in notifications and now I'm always on 5g with few spots drop to 4g but overall with band 66 late and nr71 I'm on primary t-mobile bands
if I'm outside the city like going north on 101 I have seen it go to CDMA hsp and edge but never had no service , I have lost data but never lost cellular calling ability its really been learning curve for me but when I bought this phone I didn't realize the unsupported bands I needed
I wish I can find unlock service for my 986u1 bootloader I've spent hours looking since the xda labs stopped working

if you use Odin, flash the chc firmware and set wwd as csc using Google phone app
who is your carrier and what city you live in
I do notice also I will have service with my 9860 in spots where my 986u1 is no service

here is my software version , I also just went from chc wwd wwd tgy to wwd wwd wwd tgy and was able to keep 95 percent of the extra goodies like 5g and lte switch according to data load and 5g sa on and off switch

Im American user of 9860, rooted, I'm going to try to modify and load 986u1 modem files tonight. I'm back to having 18 maps of cscs but lost all my extra radio bands and my ssd crashed with all my saved files. I just mailed it to company for data recovery. Crossing fingers.

This is a contract model and it works with the China Mobile's Sim card ONLY (or, stays at GSM only using other Sim). There is no way to unlocked the code, and of course, it does not work in NA. Unfortunate to hear.

I thought in one of your other threads you (getmobilephone) mentioned there might eventually be a rom unlocking the LTE for NA is that not the case??? I assume this is only a baseband software lock. Or is there actually a different modem chip?

Dear LuckyPunk
For obvious reasons, It is difficult to answer this question. However, let's give you one example here:
LG G3 offers several different models in China market, four models now and three more soon (using Qualcomm 805 instead of 801).
Among them, there are two models featuring Dual-Sim, one is China Mobile version aka D858 (TDD only), one is International version aka D857 (FDD & TDD). D858 is supposed that can only be compatible with China Mobile's TDD-LTE bands; however, by flashing D857'S ROM, D858 can use both FDD and TDD networks.
Two facts from here:
1. Flashing ROM unlocks the additional LTE bands.
2. D858 can support China Mobile and China Unicom's Sim by flashing ROM; however, it does not work with foreign SIM.
Contract-Free version makes things easier. We predict the Chinese and International versions of MT7-TL10 share the identical hardware. Flashing the international ROM very likely will enable the necessary LTE bands to work in NA.
Just an additional note here, the system RAM actually available for use is around 1.6 GB after the system starts, for 3/32 GB version. Think about this fact before you pull the trigger for 2/16 GB version.
Let us know if you have additional questions.

Well I was interested but thanks to getmobilephone for letting me know this phone will not work in the UK as it's not unlocked and locked in a Chinese contract. Unless that's not the case and it's unlocked and I can use it in the UK on any sim then I would be interested.

Thanks for the quick response (xda won't let me press the thank you button for some reason)
P.S I am on Vodafone with the phone brought directly from Vodafone.
Looks like for some reason Vodafone have decided to disable it on their firmware, got confirmation from a mate and others on the interweb that they also have the places option on the dialer.
I think it's network dependant. I have an un-branded UK phone and places doesn't show up. The option to see caller ID is there but greyed out.
Maybe it is to do with network. FWIW I'm on Three.
I have the places tab available, my S8+ is from the O2 Store with O2 firmware.

US phone in the UK - CSC change

So that may be true (although I'm not completely positive you couldn't ) that they do not make CSCs for you device on those networks, but a CSC is not necessary to use an unlocked phone on a different network. I have been travelling overseas with tri and quad and phones for years and the phone works just fine with a local sim in it. The CSC just makes your phone have local BRANDING and some configurations that the carrier wants. The radios all work everywhere. This may mean that you will have to do extra work to get custom carrier specific apps and stuff (like Verizon in the us has a visual voicemail app that many people who rooted have worked hard to get back) but the phone will make and receive calls just fine.
Think of it this way, many people in the carrier switch thread have made their us snapdragon devices XAA CSC which is unbranded us generic, and they all can make and receive calls just fine. The point of sim unlocked phones is that they can be used anywhere the radios can pick up signal, and yours supports every uk 3g utms and lte signal your country uses.
Maybe someday I will prove this completely by flashing an exynos CSC on my g950u and show it doesn't brick or even fail. Might put this misinformation to bed.

Thanks for your post, quite informative. The reason why I want to change the CSC is mainly for samsung pay, which seems to be limited to us cards on this phone. Other than that, everything works great, and it is not a big concern, I think I will just forget about samsung pay and use android pay instead (althoug it would be good to be able to get some of the promotions available, so I may pop up to a samsung store and ask if it is possible to switch)

If you are staying not rooted and stock there may be a way to do that without CSC change I don't know I haven't looked into it
I'll stick to the "official" set up for now, but I'll keep an eye in case it can be done in the future. Too much information for me! Maybe when root is finally achieved it will be possible, who knows

Cellular strength and throughput

We know how much you like to stream, ahem, "videos", and so cellular data is mega-important. Rate this thread to express how you think the Samsung Galaxy S10's LTE performs. A higher rating indicates that it's fantastic: throughput is excellent and signal strength is top-notch.
Then, drop a comment if you have anything to add.
Not as good as my Moro Z Play for picking up signal in. At work most of the times I get 1 or if I'm lucky 2 bars.
The S10 (Exynos) cannot hold on to a 4G data, while the Moto Z can
Tried two different networks (O2 and Vodafone), same result
Even iPhones (seen lots of people with 7/7+) have no trouble
Keep interrupting phone calls whenever the signal is not good (worse than an S7)
4G will randomly stop working even does it displays 4G+ wit full bars.
I'd have to restart te phone to solve the problem
4G/LTE on S10+ Exynos working better than Note9 Exynos on US T-mobile. No issues so far.
Working great. Good speed results on AT&T 5GE

Thanks for the reply. Yeah I'm at -120ish so basically no service whereas my s7 was closer to -90. I'm also using the TPA CSC and assumed that was the problem but maybe not. I'm tempted to flash an unlocked US firmware.

I think BTU UK unlocked should be a good start. Factory reset may also help. I'd also try different SIM card to see if that bad signal issue is limited to the SIM or T-mobile
You should also check if you live in area that has band 71 primary coverage as that is not supported on this model

I haven't tried a factory reset but T-Mobile did give me a new sim to see if that'd fix it. I checked me local coverage and I have all the bands for my area so I'll try a factory reset and maybe different firmware. BTU didn't show up on sammobile btw, but I may try the "unknown" one.
I think Exynos has multi CSC firmware and the active CSC gets decided on which SIM you put in after factory reset. But since you're on T-MOBILE USA it'll default to original CSC

Same here with Snapdragon S10 in Hong Kong.
I have s10e and after the security update of 1st April I am facing issue with the network. It's like when the network setting are on lte/3g/2g , then only 4g is working with no network for calling, it shows not registered on network. If i change it to 3g/2g then there is no 4g signal, but calling is possible. It was not there before the update.
I am using Airtel (in India)
for best signal, you need Mi9 (the flagship of the year), have both so yeah, Samsung shows very few bars in the same locations.

Exynos on AT&T or T mobile

Does anybody use the exynos varient on AT&T or T-Mobile? I'm wondering if you get good service. I'm currently using an exynos S8+ on AT&T without any problems.
i had s9 duos exynos on att. excellent reception. im located in Boston.
Download speedtest to check your data/wifi speed
Thank you for the information. I looked up the S9 exinos on frequencycheck.com. It supports 3 out of the 4 4g bands on AT&T. According to the website the s10 exynos only supports 2 out of 4. So that doesn't help too much but I never thought about checking the s9 since I know it works well.
Works great for me. I got an Exynos from Australia when my phone died. Checked the bands for SM-G975F, and it has all the T-Mobile LTE bands EXCEPT band 71. So you will be good unless you go into rural USA.
Only thing I don't get is Carrier Aggregation. I have wifi calling and VOLTE..
Thank you for the info. After looking up that model it should work fine on both networks. That website I was using has wrong info on some of the models. I think I will buy the SM-G975F.

I also have the G975 F(BTU - United Kingdom) I live in Milwaukee on ATT Network. I get great LTE Speeds - the only thing I don't get is Wifi Calling and ATT Video Calling - ATT only supports their phones for those features - at least until there is a custom CSC that we can flash (like someone did for the Note 9, S8Plus, etc)
Do you have VoLTE at least on AT&T with the exynos?

Thank you for the info. I want to keep AT&T but I would switch to T-Mobile to get the exynos variant if needed. But I'm glad I can keep my service. I had the original IPhone and I'm grandfathered in to the original unlimited data plan. I didn't even know AT&T offered wifi calling. Before my exynos s8+ I had a note 4 and for about a year my moms extra free IPhone 6. It wasn't an option back then. I don't really care about WiFi calling though. I get good service where it matters most. I can't wait for S10+ Roms!

First you download a file or run speed test using speed test app, then at the same time dial *#0011# and select SIM slot it'll say CA added or CA active. This means you're getting some form of aggregation

I am on Exynos, wouldn't have this problem with the SD version (I'd hope). I have factory reset a few times, but never see the CA as activated. I'll check from time to time, but also away from my house it doesn't show that CA is activated. Might be the XSF (australian) version that doesn't aggregate the t-mobile bands.

That could be it. I'm using TPA CSC and some other people on that CSC confirmed carrier aggregation working on T-mobile.
Snapdragon (Chinese or Hong Kong variant) does not support carrier aggregation in T-mobile from what a user posted.

Do you have a link to the post where it is CA is confirmed on TMO?
For which model the Chinese Snapdragon?
CA is working for me on Exynos. It is not the same as US Snapdragon CA but still better than no CA at all

Do you need to flash a CSC and/or modem from a US carrier onto an exynos international phone to get VoWIFI, CA, VoLTE, etc? Or does it "just work?" If you need a special CSC do you just pull HOME_CSC out of a US carrier's firmware and flash it with odin or something?

Hi
You should not flash any firmware from a Snapdragon into a Exynos..... You may not be able to get some of the service provider options using the Exynos firmware, i guess is a try and see situation, but one thing is for sure do not flash a Snapdragon firmware into an Exynos.
Everything else should work , modem is ready for all frequencies but CDMA
in case anyone comes looking, i've tried it on an exynos G973F with XSG csc (one of the OXM multi ones) just because that's what was on the phone.
VoLTE seems to be working on T-Mobile in the US without any messing around, based on the "HD" icon appearing during voice calls. Voice over WiFi seems to also work.
The phone is dual SIM with a TMO sim and an ATT sim. It doesn't get VoLTE on ATT, but I believe that's probably because AT&T only allows it on approved devices.
