How to downgrade from 11 to 10 without TWRP - OnePlus 8 Pro Questions & Answers

Is it possible to downgrade from 11 to 10 without twrp? And without wiping my phone?

You will be wiping your phone if you want to downgrade from A11 to A10. No way around it.

Hi , how I can go back to A10 please ?

No. Downgrade will wipe all in youre phone, but it can be done just by flashing downgrade rom with Settings > System updates > Local Upgrade.. No twrp needed.

Can I have link for your method please ?
I really want to go back in A10 , android 11 is **** even if I need to wipe my phone

Thanks bro it's working

The MSM tool is a way back. Never done it but should be safe.

dladz, my friend, MSM is the ultimate resort, when you got booboo..
1.Downgrade rom
2.FastBoot rom
3.MSM tool

I am on stable Android 11 , want to downgrade to 10 . Do i need to download the downgrade zip file or the regular os file will work ? Downgrading from Stable 11 to Stable 10.

MsmDownloadTool is the best way I found to downgrade from OOS 11 to 10. I have tested on OP8P. If you use the tool your data will be lost.

Ha.
I'll be honest I've never used it pal.
Seems to be the only way without twrp.
The times I've not been able to boot I've just wiped system. Always does the job.

I used a few times Downgrade, FastBoot rom, MSM on my OnePlus phones, since OP3 to OP 8 Pro. All of these are Life Savers.
And i did a clean flash all the time, till the latest 2 phone models.

Sometimes you will need to use MSM Tool.
It's possible to break only one partition and there is only one way with MSM to fix that. Even fastboot rom or OTA won't fix that. I had that once with my OP7T and also saw some other guys reported that issue.

Downgrade is it allowed?

I'm using Rn7 4gb 64gb PFGMIXM global version. I wonder if i will unlock bootloader and install TWRP or Orange it will allow me to downgrade version without bricking or any problem?
On global rom the ARB is activated, if you want to downgrade to older version you can use miui.eu instead because there is no ARB on miui.eu
Hi there, you can downgrade between MIUI 10.X without the need of use of TWRP/ORANGE, you just need the Bootloader unlocked and the MI Flash Tool with any Fastboot Miui ROM (But if you want to, you can still use the custom recoveries for Recovery ROMs) I Downgraded from 10.3.6.0 to 10.2.7.0 with fastboot rom and everything went smooth. (Be aware that after using MI Flash tool the Bootloader will be relock)

Can you give instruction? After bootloader unlock? I read other comment from other thread it can brick the device. Do we have the same device? 48mp cam and PFGMIXM? Can you post here your screenshot of your current Rn7 version?
If i'm going to install TWRP is it safer than downgrade using MI flashtool?

Hi sure, I'm on 10.3.5.0 right now, found it as the better ROM for my personal using, and yes I have global version PFGMIXM, after testing what I needed to, between 10.3.6.0-10.2.7.0 I stayed up in 10.3.5.0. (I can't post any screenshot right now but maybe later I might attach to this post --- Update, attached the screenshot)
-About the brick, I actually can't explain what it triggers but most of the time I belive has been happening to others RN7 versions.
-About the TWRP safety, is the same I believe (as long as you know what you are doing), I prefered to try the downgrade my first time using MI flashtool cuz it's official and less possibilities of problems, you can always unlock again the bootloader after the flash doing the same steps and w/o waiting time cuz already did that phase.
-The instructions are simple and they are the same given by Xiaomi in their ROM site.
On here: Fastboot Method
Instructions via Fastboot method:
-Download and install the Adb+fastboot drivers or xiaomi drivers for rn7 (that I believe you already have if you unlocked the bootloader)
-Download and install the Mi FlashTool (The link above)
-Download the FASTBOOT ROM for you need, remember it to be PFGMIXM (On internet you can find the 10.2.7.0/10.2.8.0 and the 10.3.5.0 FASTBOOT ROM -- On Xiaomi site you can find the 10.3.6.0 lastest fastboot ROM)
-Turn off the device. Press the Volume– key and the Power button at the same time to enter Fastboot mode. Then connect the device to the Windows PC/laptop via a micro USB cable.
-Double click on the downloaded ROM file to decompress it. Open the file folder for the decompressed ROM pack, and copy its path .
-Open the MI flashtool and you can either click "select" to search the folder of the uncrompressed ROM or just paste the path if you copied it early (example: C:\User\User1\Desktop\complete_folder_rom).
-Click Refresh and the device will be detected automatically.
-Then just click flash and wait the process that will take some minutes
-After the flash is done, the status will say "flash done" and will appear a "success" message, then the phone will reboot itself and start as it was out-of-the-box for the first config
Same instructions are with pictures in the link.
I didn't tried the downgrade in TWRP/Orange but I believe is the same as flashing any ROM, wipe dalvik, cache, data, system and then flash the ROM - for TWRP/Orange the ROM is the "Recovery" version ones, not the Fastboot as the steps above (TWRP will always mark you an error for MIUI Recovery ROMS so erase "compatibility.zip" in the ROM, this usually is not needed in Orange as I belive i've read it)
My recommendation is to use the Fastboot Method
Also PFGMIXM ver only have the ROM versions mentioned, 10.2.3.0 (10.2.3.0 PFGMIXM not the EEA one, it's rare to see and only come in stocks phones) it's a rare out-of-the-box-rom-version I saw, and the 10.2.1.0 was deleted from Xiaomi servers long time ago, so to downgrade you are only going to find the 10.2.7.0 ROM.

Thank you very much for detailed instructions the reason why i want to downgrade is the battery life. I noticed after two consecutive update within one month the battery backup is not good like before. I am pretty sure about that because it has been 1 month since i bought this.
Even the power saver is always activated I'm not satisfied with the battery backup now. I'm thinking if i will flash Havoc, Lineage or Lower version of miui what do you think? which of these is good for battery?

Yes I did it due the same thing, for battery and ram management, but most of it perfomance, and I got it balanced on 10.3.5.0, not the best but it does the job for me. I haven't tested Havoc neither Lineage, but if just battery your concern, you can take a read to LionHeart90's Guide ON THIS LINK or you can go and try by yourself each ROM till you find the most one that suit for you :good:

Lineage OS 16 in Oneplus 5 - July 2019

Hi,
I bought a oneplus 5 phone because I was told it was going to be easy to install Lineage OS. I have try to install Lineage OS 16 on it for 2 days without success.
The first issue i had was installing twrp. Most of the twrp available did not worked with my phone. After flashing them with fastboot and reboot to recovery I would end up with a black screen and the the blue led turn on.
However I did find two TWPRs that work:
- twrp-3.2.1-1-cheeseburger.img
- twrp-3.2.3-0-20180822-codeworkx-cheeseburger.img
There might be other that would work, but this are the ones that I have tested.
After being able to boot to TWRP I try to flash the firmware 9.06 with success. Without reboot I flash lineage without success. I try to reboot and the system did not worked and I never reboot.
After a while I found a OxygenOS 4.5.10 that I hope is the stock rom. I has the following sha256sum: 7a8268f6a133f090a2d304aad2f92393aefbd4df34a6c2ed088909aaf7ccc2dd
That did worked and give me a breath. At least I had a working phone now. However I try to update and it did not worked.
From there I have been strugling with this project to install Lineage OS in my new phone. I know there are guides out there, but most of them did not work or are outated. There ara also threads in this forums, but are to big to try to follow. So I start this one, hopefully you can help me.
It would be great if there is a step by step guide on how to run Lineage OS in this phone.
Best,

Hello, seems that you did not follow the installation instructions within the official LineageOS thread https://forum.xda-developers.com/oneplus-5/development/rom-lineageos-16-0-pie-oneplus-5-t3843064
Your issues are clearly missed or skipped steps.
Please follow the instructions there and if you get stuck, report back with detailed information :good:
Thanks a lot for your quick response. It do have an issue with that guide and it is with point 1:crying::crying:
- Make sure your phone was running OxygenOS 5.1.4 at least once

I have OxygenOS 4.5.10 and it does not upgrade to OxygenOS 5.1.4. What happened, is that in my first attempts to get this thing working I brick the phone and loose the stock firmware. Then I found this rom that allow me to use the phone (OxygenOS 5.1.4)
OnePlus5Oxygen_23_OTA_015_all_1708252353_f05918.zip
sha256: 7a8268f6a133f090a2d304aad2f92393aefbd4df34a6c2ed088909aaf7ccc2dd
It make the phone usable, but not upgradable. I doubt is the original, but I found the link on the Oneplus forums. (I can not post links because I am too new here)
After that I search for a ROM that comes with 5.1.4 and was really happy, and try to flash. It did not work, it is like it tries to boot, but never finish booting. I wait at least for 10 minutes. This the file and the sha256 hash:
OnePlus5Oxygen_23_OTA_037_all_1807181258_7b4b6.zip
sha256 2bb2e21a43572ac4bd2e5d1d30a3fb7562ddec280df3d452d61f58a4a8135f14
So I guess my first step would to find a way to get Oneplus 5.1.4 working. When I first try to upgrade the phone, I upgrade it from OxygenOS and it worked, however then I mess things and brick the phone. I found the rom that allow the phone to work (4.5.10), but for some reason the upgrades do not.
Thank you very much for your time.

You need to clean flash oxygenOS 5.1.4, then take ota update to 9.0.7 so you have the latest firmware.
Clean flash means that you need to wipe system, data, cache and format internal storage too.
So please backup everything off your device at first!
Everything you need you find here on xda, like the roms https://forum.xda-developers.com/oneplus-5/how-to/oneplus-5-mirrors-official-oxygen-os-t3628190

Finally I had time to work on this. The rom for 5.1.4 is: OnePlus5Oxygen_23_OTA_037_all_1807181258_7b4b6.zip, that I already tried and never boots . With twrp it seems that the Rom is installed, with the stock recovery the installation never ends. I am going to try with other ROMS. Hopefully one of them would allow updates.
I am going to start with the newest 5.1.7, and if that does not work would keep going down.
Thanks again.

5.1.7 did not boot, however I have some progress. I installed 4.5.12, I was previously at 4.5.10, so my android setup security patch levels went from July 2017 to to September 2017. Small step forward.
I have have that hypothesis that it would work with 4.x.x versions and not with 5.x.x versions. Tomorrow I would try to flash the latest 4.x.x and the earliest 5.x.x to see when does this things stop working.
I did the tests and I can flash up to 4.5.15. I tried to flash 5.0 and that did not worked. It flashes correctly, but it never finish booting, I waited up to 10 minutes.
So there is something preventing the phone to use version 5.x.x Should I try upgrading the firmware? Other ideas?

Please give detailed steps what you did including file versions. Otherwise I cannot help further.
Every oxygenOS version has firmware built in, no need to update it seperately.
Follow this:
1 flash this recovery with fastboot like the first time https://drive.google.com/file/d/1UlTftbe6wooAs4Fp0cjwXlOKmfQHgdfL/view?usp=drivesdk
2 boot the new twrp recovery
3 flash magisk 18.1 to make twrp stick
4 FORMAT internal storage(not wipe only) and wipe system and data partition
5 transfer oxygenOS 5.1.4 to the phone and flash it
6 boot oxygenOS 5.1.4 and take ota update to tg and latest OxygenOS(9.0.7 actually.
7 now you're on the latest OxygenOS and firmware version
Thank you very much, now I am with LineageOS

Downgrade from 10 to 9

Will the Msm tool work? I only ask because sometimes if you try to install older bootloader it will brick your phone
MSMTool will work yes, but it does wipe the device completely and relock the bootloader.
You might wanna try using rollback package first: (https://oxygenos.oneplus.net/Fulldowngrade_wipe_18801_181024_2027_user_MP2_release.zip)
If you used magisk I'd suggest deleting all modules and rebooting first, then you perform a local update from system settings with this package.
It will install OOS 9.0.5 or 9.0.4 (don't remember now), and from that place you can install 9.0.17 with full zip package that are available on the forums.
Going back to 9 is a dead end, as security support will end (or already is).
At each major version of Android some people want to hold back. Interesting.

Lol, I don't want to hold back, but until 10 ROM support is truly stable, as in flashing, I'm staying on 9
I just reverted today without the MSM tool. Flashed via twrp but obviously had to wipe clean.

Yes, this is how I reverted back to 9. And yes, it does wipe the device (along with sdcard, so back up that as well).
The difference is that it does not relock the bootloader. But to be honest, MSMDowload is better in the means that it restores the phone from scratch. I used the rollback package, and my phone claims that the system partition has 0 bytes left. After deleting apps from system folder they somehow reappear, as if it was still Android 10 without R/W permission. If I were you, if you decided that you can bear the necessary wipe of the phone, I'd go with MSMDowload.

Want to upgrade my OP5 from Oxygen 4.5.10 , Android 7.1.1 to the newest..

Hello
As the titel says..
Its been a few years since ive done anything like this, so dont really know what i need to do now..
Ive flashes newest twrp-3.2.3-0-20180822 and tryed to install OnePlus5Oxygen_23_OTA_052_all_1910082005_adf7221fba833a0.zip but witout any luck
Log in twrp says:
Installing zip file '/sdcard/OnePlus5Oxygen_23_OTA_052_all_1910082005_adf7221fba833a0.zip'
Checking for digest files
Skipping digest check: no digest file found
vendor partition is not existed, exit ota!!
Updater process ended with Error: 7
Error installing zip file
I have no idea if its even possible to do this if i need other updates first ect.
Kinda rookies now haha..
Iv'e searched forum for help dunno if ive searched wrong or not, but couldnt find any help.
You have to install version 5.1.4 based on Oreo 8.1.0 and boot up the phone to enable vendor partition. Then you will be able to flash the latest Pie OS. If you want a faster way, you can use the 9.0.9 EDL package, but you will lose all data
Well i had a friend that said i could just install 9.0.9 firmware, well now ive ended up witj a phone which i cant enter.. Can still open fastmode and twrp but i cant add files on phone.. Any ideas on how to fix this mess?

So they changed the partition layout with Oreo? I am asking because I currently have the exact same problem.
Currently stucking on 7.1.1 with the same errormessage. I will try to upgrade to Oreo first and then move over to Pie. Thanks.

Yes, with the version 5.1.5 Project Treble was adopted and it requires a new vendor partition. That partition was created with 5.1.4, so if you are on a version lower than 5.1.4 you will need to install that version, boot once (the repartitioning is made during Android boot, not during the install) and then you will be able to upgrade to latest Pie version.
If you want to upgrade in one step, you can use EDL tool, but you lose all your data. Anyway, I advice you to do so because a format is a good operation when upgrading the Android version

I assume I can then also move directly to 9.0.xx, right? Sorry, I forgot that the OP5 got Android 10!

You can install the latest ROM ONLY if you are on a version that is 5.1.4 or newer. If you are on an older version, you have to first upgrade to 5.1.4 and then the newer version (Android 10 will be out in the next months)
Feedback: Works great. Moved to that version, rebooted once, upgraded directly to latest OOS (9.xx whatev) with success. Thanks for all your support & comments!

You're welcome!

recovery the bricked phone, but how can I upgrade to android 9?

just use MsmDownloadTool V4.0.exe to recovery my op5 to oos, but the version is quite low as Android 7.1.1.
checked the system update, it told me up to date. which is of course not true.
tried to clean the cache of google framework service and oneplus framework service, still nothing in updating.
tried installed oxygen updater, and download 3 update zip from 7.1.4, 8, last version of 8, but each time I use local install in system uploading, then reboot to recovery, it shows me "failed". none of version works.
I even tried to install in recovery, wipe cache and data or just wipe data, then install from internal disk, none of the file works, even don't have any popup fail notice, just go back to file chooser interface.
I can still go back to system by switch off and on again.
How can I upgrade the old version of android in my oneplus 5?
original:
used use lineages os with Twrp, and I would like to flash to original oxygen.
download full rom zip in https://www.oneplus.com/uk/support/softwareupgrade/details?code=PM1574156143164
copied to phone disk
went to twrp
wipe Dalvik, System, Data, and Cache
then tried to install the full rom zip, but met "no Digest File found" error
found it must be twrp old, so I download new one in https://dl.twrp.me/cheeseburger_dumpling/twrp-3.4.0-0-cheeseburger_dumpling.img.html
copy to phone and flash it to recovery.
select "reboot to recovery"
then problem coming: I can only see the oneplus logo with powered by Android. it won't go any further.
I am not sure any thing wrong during my processing, but maybe 2 things:
1, I wiped the system
2, I didn't clean the screen lock pin before I flash
so, my question here is, if possible I can flash the original oxygen os in this situation?
if positive, could you please give me a step by step instruction?
by the way, the zip rom I download from oneplus site isn't have the "flash-all" script.
please please help me .

Please help. I bought a phone with Beta installed. I wanted to switch to the original system. So I screwed up something so using the MsmDownloadTool tool I wanted to use it by uploading everything from scratch. I fell into the Chinese H2Os system. I searched again and I already have the original ColorOS based on Android 9. But I can't update it to 10. What do I have to do? Oh .... the bootloader is unlocked ...

if you are directly flash to coloros android 9 from lower version other than android 8, it might be the problem you won't got the update in the system. It might be have issue in wifi or gps as well, which I bet you didn't well test yet.
that's all about the system partitions messed up. regarding my understanding.
solution is simple, but time consuming:
you have to flash an original rom using msmdownloadtool, make sure that rom will have update notification in the system menu of settings. then upgrade from there one level up each time, till to the android 10. (chinese version do have 10 available)
than, you can download oxygen os android 10 to flash on the coloros android 10 (hydrogen os android 10) you just done the upgrade, don't forget wipe data/cache before flashing.
hope that's helps.
