So I'm trying to make some changes to my apns-config file but since it is system I am unable to edit. How can I change the properties to allow me to do it? I'm currently on OB2. I've tried numerous root explorers and file explorer in android studio.

Root explorer allows me to edit anything.
You need to pay for it.. Plus root access has to be requested and accepted.
I've used it today in lower level files and folders.
Once I'm in the file i use an app called quick edit to edit actual files, this program also requests root.
This one's free

I must be using a different Root Explorer. It doesn't have any option to pay for it. It's by Speed Software. Is it the same?

I went to play store and checked my purchases and I paid for it back 2013 so I'm guessing I am using the same one as you yet I still can't edit. Anything I try fails.

What are you editing? And what with?
Is it a file you're opening? If so what with? If it's a text file then it'll need also to be root enabled.
Hence why I use quick edit..normal editors don't have root access so cannot save to restricted areas.
Total commander text editor and I tried Quick Edit. It's the apns-config.xml file. I have some apn tweaks I want to try out.

Yep same issue here can't edit. Try to make a copy that's possible. Then edit, then copy back.
You may need to change permissions within the file.
Root explorer: press and hold, permissions, allow read/write
Gets the permissions I've got.
So I guess just add write

I've tried all of that to no avail. I would think I could at least change the permissions.
You can't edit system, product, vendor. They all are read only on stock. This is because of the new partition system introduced by Google on devices launched with Android 10.
Nothing you can do about it. You now have to rely on magisk.

You need to use a module of some sort. Create one yourself with the edited file so magisk "replace" it systemless-ly.
How can I use systemless-ly ?

Are you rooted? If not, you cannot do it, because you need root access to do changes in /system directory. If, you can do it with e.g. one of the following apps:
Root explorer (paid)
Super Manager (free)
File Expert (free)
After starting, you need to mount (switch) r/w. Additionally, in both free apps, you need to enable root option in their settings before. Now can you can overwrite.
Yessss !! it works (yes, I'm rooted)
Thank you, MatDrOiD ! I used File Expert. Just 2 questions:
in file expert, when i go into options - mount - and choose "read and write" should I be already positioned browsing the "system" folder ??
I've done this way, but I suspect that "mount read and write" is a global option referring to system folders and can be enabled just when entering File expert ?

I don't like to say it, but pressing thanks-button would be awesome!
You can also mount r/w while in root folder, does not matter. After closing file expert, you always have to enable root explorer function and mounting r/w again, when you start file expert the next time. At least i cannot find an option to enable it permantly. Which is understandable for me, because superuser rights can damage your phone (so this enable action works metaphorically as a little warning, imho).

It can't install automatically without your permission (shouldn't).
My suggestion to get the update is Odin back to 100% full stock image. Then you can take whatever OTA is at your hearts desire. Then you know everything is so fresh, so clean :good:
Then we just wait for word on root ?

That's what I'm going to do. I hear a lot of interesting things about 4.4.2 - how it breaks SD Card access etc... I am VERY happy with 4.3 with the rom I've chosen and will happily await a Clean Rom 4.4 before I even think about 4.4.
I have 4.4.2 on my Nexus 7 2013 tablet and it's good - hopefully it'll mean even better battery life. Pretty happy with the 2x battery life increase after I've rooted. Here's to hoping for more in 4.4.2.
Fyi - googled and I can't find anything about 4.4 coming to Note 3 via Verizon. Back when I had Droid 1 and HTC Thunderbolt us rooters got ICS way before it came out to the carriers. lol.
OP, do you have a link?
I disabled both Knox and the OTA update in MJE by using a root file explorer (Solid Explorer) and changing file permissions to 0000 ("---------") of a couple .apk/.odex files in /system/app (followed by rebooting) :
ContainerAgent{.apk,.odex}
ContainerEventsRelayManager{.apk,.odex}
KLMSAgent{.apk,.odex}
KnoxAgent{.apk,.odex}
KnoxAttestationAgent{.apk,.odex}
KnoxStore{.apk,.odex}
SDM{.apk,.odex}
FWUpgrade{.apk,.odex}
LocalFOTA.apk
This allows them to be restored at any time by chmod'ing them back to mode 0644 ("-rw-r--r--"). I suppose this is similar to "freezing" in TiBu. The first group are Knox-related and last three are involved in the OTA, but it might be sufficient to only disable the SDM{.apk,.odex} files.
cheers
how do I disable SDM{.apk,.odex} files. using root file explorer. I found the files I do not see anyway to disable them?

Rename them to .bak files.
If I move the file to my sd card would that do the same thing as disabling them? Would it mess up my OS not to have it in my system file.
I do not see how to rename any file? Please explain the process of renaming.

I haven't used root explorer, but I know that both Solid Explorer and ES File Manager have a way to change the file permissions mode - usually by press-and-hold on the file name, and then select "Properties" or some such from the pop-up menu.
You can also rename them if you want as suggested above (but obviously don't delete the {.apk | .odex} suffix so you won't get the two of them confused) - for instance Foo.apk -> Foo.apk.bak and Foo.odex -> Foo.odex.bak
[Edit] Also: Some root-aware file explorers make you manually remount /system in rw mode before you do anything, and some take care of it for you. If your permission changes / renaming operations fail, it's because of that. (Solid explorer just does it for you).

Usually there is a menu in your file explorer which is brought up by long-pressing on an individual file name. I would recommend you leave the files in place and either rename them or make them unreadable (mode 0000) - moving them to the SD card and back will destroy the SElinux extended attributes of the files (if any). Then a couple months from now you won't need to remember where they are. They won't do any harm just sitting there.
Do I take out work apk and put in bak instead?
Got it thanks

If you have root you can download fx file manager and the root add on from the play store or a similar root file manager. This will allow you to rename the files you need. You can move or delete them if you want. All the custom ROMs remove them without issue. Another option would be to purchase Titanium Backup Pro and freeze the apps with that. That is my preferred method with a stock rooted rom because all you have to do is unfreeze them and then unroot to take the OTA. With that in mind I would heed the advice of others and stay away from KitKat until a root method is confirmed if you value having root access.
Edit @bftb0 beat me to the answer when I was typing...
Just changed it and the app became a blank. When I put back the app and took away the bak the app did not appear again it is still a blank what do I do to get it back in system tray. Right now it is a blank page?

There will be plenty of lemmings that rush to the sea, afraid that they are going to miss something by not downloading an update on day one.
So, wait a week or two to see if any of them make it back to shore with their root privileges still intact. Their pain will be your gain. You'll also have the benefit of reading review articles on-line that will tell you if there is anything compelling in the update; my guess is that your phone already works quite well.

Extremely confusing and vague language "changed it", "the app became a blank". also "system tray" and "put back". Huh?
Don't use pronouns such as "it". Nobody knows which "it" you are talking about.
It is possible that your file browser needs to "refresh" it's listing after a file name change. Sometimes file managers have an explicit "refresh" in their menu, or in other cases, you just visit a different folder in the file manger and then return back to (e.g.) /system/app folder to get the refresh to occur.
Hopefully all you are doing is manipulating file names.
Titanium will not work with Note 3. It actually semi bricked my phone. I was told not to Install it. The app whose name I changed then changed back is still there the original icon is just not there. I think everything is OK but got nervous not seeing the icom
I think the icon just disappeared. I first changed the name as you suggested adding bak. The icon disappeared but it showed a blank page icon.Then I wanted to make sure I could put it back so I removed the bak. After I removed the bak then rebooted. The icon never appeared again? When I open file manager and look at it the symbol is a question mark.

I learned my lesson on my last phone. It was a S3 with an unlocked bootloader. I HAD to get the update despite the warnings not to. Within 10 minutes after that I tripped knox trying to get root and the wifi stopped working. That mistake cost me $400.00 for the phone N3 I have now. Verizon was "kind" enough to give me $300.00 off any new phone despite my mistake. No more going down that road for me. Yes, I am quite happy with this phone, even with the locked bootloader.

Trust me it works fine and won't brick your phone if you use it properly. At worst you would have to Odin back to stock if you deleted important files by mistake.
I don't think anything is wrong with the system. It is OK to have a ? mark instead of the icon right?

It is the new one, from a leak before S5 came out. VZW decided not have it on their version as VZW likes to make you have only what THEY want on your device.
The lay out is different, has the option to have a bookmark home or a physical homepage. It has a home button unlike chrome. You can download videos direct from this browser as well where on chrome alot of times it would not download files and i had to use yet another app taking up space on my phone. I believe it allows for flash as well unlike chrome.
Its all about personal preference, i like google as my homepage and not my favorites or bookmarks, i like the lay out and options, i like the home button in the browser, it is plenty fast, i like direct downloads, and i havent tried a flash page yet.. but on previous versions it worked great.
Hope this helps!
Oh yeah and the Air browse and motion controls do not work in chrome but do within this browser... need to be turned on within phone settings of course.

Hello,
As mentioned in the subject I am trying to install an application without success, and need some help understanding how to carry out some of the necessary steps...
The app in question is the S5 accuweather application (with the transparency option for the widget), which I have downloaded from these forums (link below)... in the same post as the link to download, the following is stated:
Delete ChnUnifiedDaemon and CMAWeatherPhone2013 from System/app
Click to expand...
Click to collapse
...this might as well be written in Chinese... I did give it a shot though, but didn't get very far - I found the relevant directory with the current weather app installed (i.e. in the system/app directory), but if I try to delete the app which is there it tells me I don't have the permission... ditto for copying in the downloaded app into that directory - I don't have the necessary write permission in the directory...
also, there is an option for activating Full Screen Settings... for this I have to do the change the following value:
SEC_FLOATING_FEATURE_SETTINGS_SUPPORT_FULL_SCREEN --> To TRUE
...where do I find this string, and how can I edit it??? do I need a specific app for it?
Thanks in advance for your help

Mounting r/w gives you the permission to write or modify the system files.
You will have to enable the Root Explorer feature of ES.
Press the menu key to bring up the left panel and then scroll down. You should find the option "Root Explorer". It's off by default. Turn it on. It will ask you for root permission. Grant it and you should be good to go.
Now you should be able to delete and copy the specified files.
But you will have to set the right permission for the copied files.
To change the permission, long press on the apk, press "More" and select "Properties"
There should be a line called "Permission" and next to it something like "rw- r-- r--". This varies, depending on what you selected. "r" means read, "w" is write and some have "x" which means execute.
Those vary depending on the app.
Change the permission of the S5 weather app to the same as the other apps have on the /system/app folder. Most of them have "rwx r-x r-x". So that's probably what you want to change them to.
Then you have to reboot. If everything is set correctly you should have the app installed on your phone. Good luck
As for that string, I don't know where it is. Maybe ask in the thread.
Thanks Reaper.. that was just the answer I was looking for!
...can anyone help me find the string? or at least give me an idea as to where I should be looking and what app I can use to edit whatever file it is I will need to edit?

For all the people that are blaming this method for their bootloops, i can tell you one thing: you didn't follow this method correctly.
USING ROOT EXPLORER WILL RESULT IN A TRUNCATED BUILD.PROP FILE!
I clearly said "I'm using ES File Explorer for that" and that is for a reason. I prefer root explorer for anything that it can do because it's just so much faster. But ES file explorer can edit a text file no matter what size it is, root explorer will just cut it off at the bottom resulting in a bootloop.
Thank you for understanding.

Here's a video I made showing off 3 awesome tweaks found here on this device's forum. XDA made our beloved G4 a LOT better with "just" root.
If the above embedded video doesn't work for some reason, here's the youtube link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z4X2FF3BwjA
Have fun watching!
Thanks for the video! Pretty sweet to have 60 fps now on this amazing camera. Other two I already knew and did change the dual window one. The DPI was something that never bothered me.
thanks
Great video. One thing to mention is you can click the '1/2' square button next to the X on the recents screen to pick your dual window apps also
You can change the DPI without root via an adb command.
Is there any way to make nandroid style full backups without custom recovery? It would be nice to have that before trying tweaks.
Modified build.prop to true for multi window and got a bootloop.

We probably don't have the same variant. I have the H812 and editing build.prop causes bootloops for me.
changing the DPI always results in bootloop for me. I'm with an international H815.
Use an app that is designed to edit the build.prop. It's a large file. Standard text editors will likely truncate the file, resulting in boot loops.

Make sure you are using a good editor. Some editors alter the integrity of the file and save it funky.
I used the non root method for dpi but you can use DPI changers in the play store. I like Tex_Droider.
Thanks to you I'm now stuck at t-mobile boot logo after editing split window to true. Tried restarting and factory erasing with holding down volume and power key but after rest I'm stuck at logo again.

Same thing happened to me. Just flash the root file again in download mode an you should be fine. For the record you can't be mad at the op. He didn't put a gun to your head.
Root file will do nothing because it won't replace the build. Prop. I had to restore using KDZ. And he did use a gun. You weren't there

I have the Wind h812. Made a couple of changes in the build.prop and everything works fine.

1080p 60fps works great. Thanks!
always remember to check the build prop permissions (make sure it's rw r r)

I don't know which root method you uses but since low effort root consists in flashing the whole modified image of the rom it's pretty much the same as using KDZ but a whole lot faster. Like I said it did work for me.

For real? Which file manager did you use. I used root explorer. Should I try with ES?

You are absolutely right. Used ES instead of root explorer and it worked.

@eulin87 that's a dangerous statement there, please don't joke about it because XDA Staff might take that seriously and message me and all that. Thank you for understanding the situation guide makers are being put in
Have fun rooting!
