I have been playing around with my Echo Show 5inch and have some thoughts and questions.
1. Would it be possible that it would fall pray to the pin shorting used on Kindles and fire TVs?
2. Is there a way to have the device Install a compromised update over the network?
3. Would it be possible to externaly write to the flash chip to modify it?
I have noticed that if you hold the mute and volume up buttons you get to the recovery, but with mute and vol down it does a reset. this seems to be the same on some other echos.
Is it possible that finding a bug in older more open echos could lead to one found here?
Please let me know what you think and if I remember other details I will put them below.
Thanks!

maybe you can find a way to map the green and red phone button to the two soft keys we now have a the button of the screen,
i always push those buttons, it makes me think i'm using a phone,
forgetting it's a touch screen
recall somebody saying that those 2 buttons was hardwired to the gsm part of the phone and that CE had no control over them
but i guess he could have been wrong since they are locked by button lock
but then if the phone does ring they can make you pick up the phone without typing in your password
Red and green buttons are not hardwired to GSM module.
They are usual hardware buttons processec by system in a specific way.
While working on AEKMap I was able to unbind these buttons from WinCE. And I think that may write simple app to "unbind" them. But what the reason for this application?
1. not all of the programs will detect this key because it is out of "conventional" range
2. How you will answer phone calls without green button?
Hi AE,
Is there any way that you could release the source showing how your unmapped the phone buttons, or at least give us a few hints?
It really is an art that you have mastered, something that very few people have been able to do (outdside of the OS development labs, and we never see those results)!
There are nothing special in this application.
Just calls to
UnregisterHotKey(), UnregisterFunc1 and RegisterHotKey() - if you just need hint The only hint is UnregisterFunc1 - but it is also described in number of places (just ask Google) Hope, this will work in WM2005 also.
I suggest to do it another way. Today I "downgrade" my BlueAngel to Andes And now I should count my HW buttons again  Lets wait some days - and probably I'll make some solution specially for Himalaya/Andes, taking into account your "red/green wishes" At least it will work on WM2003, but I see no problems for Magneto also.
I will post report in this topic: http://forum.xda-developers.com/viewtopic.php?p=115430
P.S.: Please try to run program attached here to check if it hooks red and green buttons and let me know the results. You will need to soft-reset your device to restore normal HW buttons functionality
Unhooking the red and green buttons would definitely be useful for us with a Magician, since it has very few hardware buttons. You could still answer a phone call by clicking Answer when the dialog appears.

Hello boys since yesterday I have two problems with my dual HTC touch.
1) unable to exchange files with the bluetooth because I do not know the key.
Qulacuno know where I can find it?
2) I can not change the key accenzione when the device goes into standby?
Let me explain better:
Now the only way to turn and press the button instead accenzione I would put that when I click the button response or closure call HTC lit.
Thank you to all.
1)You should be able to set the key yourself when you link up the partnership between the two devices - once the partnership is set up put files in the bluetooth exhangefolder to explore
2) really unsure what you mean here - sorry
Hello. I would really appreciate help on this one.
I recently got an HTC HD mini T5555, OS version: 5.2.23103.
After performing hard reset everything on the cell works perfectly.
However, after a software installation, the volume buttons won´t make any change to volume when pressed.
The volume controll dosn´t even show up in the display. Now, If I perform yet another hard reset,
(the software installed will be removed) volume will be changable again.
The software itself has a built-in function for listening to music, making cals etc.
From within the software you can change the volume using its own controls (not HTC volume control).
That works fine.
The software is called "Handi".
"Handi is a program tailored for people with cognitive disabilities.
The most fundamental difference between the Handi and "normal" hand computer program
is that Handi-programs have far less information and less choice per view".
I have no experiences from other hand computer programs but assume they all work the same way.
I´m sure there is a way to fix this in the registry. Anyone got ideas or useful advice?
Need more info? I´ll try to give you as much as I know about it.
Thanks in advance!
Regards /Anders
First things that came up my mind:
1. The volume buttons are disabled by the software
2. The Volume software is overwritten (reg keys, or other files)
Maybe here is a solution by installing a cab with volume control:
http://htcpedia.com/forum/touch-hd-rom-development/1161-[request]-htc-volume-control.html
More custom volume controls:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=598997
But be careful, modifications can make you do a hard reset .
I installed the CAB but still the same...
Gonna search the registry instead. Thanks anyway!
Hi folks,
from time to time I forget to plug my X5 to the power connector in the evening.
Result: At 3am the phone plays the sound meaning the battery is low and that it will switch off now.
First an foremost my wife shows zero tolerance, when my phone wakens her up in the middle of the night ;-/
How can I switch off this behavior of the phone?
If somebody has a way without rooting the phone, this would be favored. If there is only a way with rooting the phone, let me know, too.
Thanks,
Markus
The root way
The root way is to delete lowbattery sound from /system/media/ui.
This can be done with root explorer or adb. I dont know the adb but with root explorer you just go there and delete the file.
Solved
Hi there,
I think I solved it without rooting.
1) Switch X5 off
2) Connect X5 to linux computer.
3) Switch X5 on while pressing Vol + and -
4) X5 has pink screen an linux mounts several file systems.
5) Go to Linux-Mount-Dir/system/media/audio/notifications/ and replace TaDa.ogg with some stereo ogg file which contains only silence.
6) Remove the batter yof the X5.
I did 1 to 5 again and my TaDa.ogg was still there. So I guess my change was permanent.
Bye,
Markus
Good to know you got it without rooting. And i was even stupid enought to give you a wrong directory...
can I edit the alert rather than remove it?

hi, this is pretty much the only issue I have with my phone but I'm reluctant to just replace the alert with silence, it is useful to know my battery is close to death! hopefully someone can help!
the battery alert sound uses the media volume rather than the ringtone volume, so I can have the phone set to silent and it will still go off full volume in the middle of the night.
does anyone know of a way of changing the volume type the alert uses?
I imagine there is a file specifying the volume type the alert uses and hopefully its just a case of changing something along the lines of 'volume type = media' to 'volume type = ringtone' so when I have the phone on silent, it will stay that way
my phone uses:
kernal: [email protected] #1
build: U8800V100R001C00B135SP01
customer version: CUSTC240D001
I have it rooted so editing isn't a problem, I just don't know what to edit!
thanks in advance for all help!
Hi all,
since I am new in this forum I would appreciate if I am in the wrong section to raise my issues, please let me know and I will accordingly move my post. Thanks.
Following issues I face with my 2 month old UMI Zero.
1. can not make regular phone calls via speaker. my partner can listen, myself cannot hear a word. fact headset icon shows in the very top menue line, speaking via headset works fine but does not make life easy.
serveral factory resets done, updates etc. nothing worked.
2. yesterday, the next issues occured out of nothing. my touch buttons do not operate anymore at all. no function behind except the blue lights. Need to reboot if I would like to switch apps/functions.
Anyone who can help me to solve my problem or experienced same issue(s).
Thank you.
Best
StadenKarl
Same issue with buttons with my umi zero
My buttons stopped working as well all at once, considered as contact problem until one day they returned to respond unexpectedly.
After working fine for a while stopped responding once again.
Thinking it's might be software issue, I've installed a new rom material V 3.0 lollipop inspired 4.4 kitkat provided by umi Root joy tool. It didn't help, however, regardless to update the buttons now are lightened but not stable responsive therfore still useless.
For now used this post to enable soft keys: search Google for "enable-soft-keys-navigation-bar-android-phone"
Another free app which I found useful is called My home Button, can be downloaded from play store.
Hopefully a solution will be found soon
The only solution is to dissasemble the smartphone and connect properly the hardware components, you can dissassemble your phone with an hot air gun
Same issue and possible solution
Come on! Are u kidding?
My buttons stopped working yesterday but with a reboot everything was fine again. Until now. No signal from the buttons, light nor fucntion. I'll try flashing it and, if not, i will have to dissasemble and check the hardware.
If this doesn't work I'm thinking about downloading an xposed module that allows you to remap the phisycal buttons. I'll try remapping home, back and settings buttons into the power and volume ones. Let's see if it works.
First of all sorry for my bad english ( I'm french). For the problem with your touch bouton you can also use gravity box ! With this app you can enable the navigation bar and you gonna have touch bouton like the nexus phones. If you don't know how to do that you can ask me question in a next post.
Dear All,
Just want o let you know that after being hesitant for so long, I finally disassembled my Umi Zero and guess what? The back camera connector was not connected, and the touch button + speaker connector at the bottom was also not connected! I just connected them back, put the battery back, and touch buttons + mic were working fine. Tested with voice recorder, playing audio, and also few calls.
Disappointed though by the component assembly....most of the screws were very lose and one even came out without unscrewing. Also, the screws are of different sizes, so please please please take note where each screw goes (What I did is get an A4 paper, made a sketch of he phone outline, and placed the screws on each area where I removed them from).
Note : Most likely you will break the back glass cover so you might as well place an order on Aliexpress before you disassemble it. It is possible to remove it without breaking with lots of extra caution though.
No sound and no soft keys
I had the same problem with my daughters Umi Zero.
I found a work round for the buttons:
-temporarily install an app which emulates the keys so you can navigate. eg Handy Soft Keys from the Playstore
-enable in settings/accessibility
-reboot
-need to be rooted
-install file manager, eg ES file explorer
-in ES tools, activate Root Explorer
-navigate to local/device/system/build.prop
-drop to end, leave a couple of lines space then edit by adding: qemu.hw.mainkeys=0
-save and reboot
You have soft keys
Uninstall emulator app
Backup etc before you start
Haven't fixed the sound yet: nothing from the speaker, phone and headphone jack doesn't work.
Bluetooth does work.
