Guide to flash Nougat if you face bootloops when upgrading

Hey guys!
This is just a simple post for you guys who want to make the jump to Nougat on the Snapdragon version of the Redmi Note 3, but face issues like bootloop or soft brick .
I tried many times to flash to Nougat and failed, so I thought I would document my experience for anyone who needs it.
The main problem I faced was an outdated bootloader.
Here, I have detailed the steps I took to flash Nougat successfully on my phone.
This does assume that you do have some experience and knowledge about the world of custom ROMs.
- disclaimer -
I am not responsible for any damage you may cause as a result of following this guide.
I am not affliated with any of the authors that wrote the guides that I will link in this guide.
The links are there purely for reference, and if you wrote one of the posts that I have linked in this guide, please message me to have your name at the bottom of this post.
- disclaimer end -
Here are a few things to note.
1) The version of MIUI you were on when you unlocked your bootloader.
2) Whether or not you have uploaded your bootloader
3) Whether you unlocked your bootloader officially
4) Whether you have permission to unlock the bootloader from XiaoMi.
5) Download and install the latest version of MiFlash
6) Download and install ADB and Fastboot on your PC
7) Boot into download mode to check if your PC recognises your phone. If not, reinstall the appropriate drivers.
A few websites you might want to refer to :
A MIUI forum page which teaches you how to flash/unbrick your Redmi Note 3.
http://en.miui.com/thread-235865-1-1.html
A MIUI forum page that teaches you how to repair your IMEI if it gets corrupted
http://en.miui.com/thread-245598-1-1.html
A guide to the XiaoMi deep flash cable as a kind of last resort(This is essentially Xiaomi's version of Samsung's USB jig; to force your device into download mode)
http://forum.xda-developers.com/redmi-note-3/how-to/guide-how-to-flash-hard-bricked-redmi-t3490055
First, you may want to do a few things.
1) Check and double check your device codename (Kenzo for Redmi note 3 Pro, Kate for Redmi Note 3 SE)
2) Download the latest Global Developer ROM (There are .zip and .tar versions, for this guide we will be using the latter. I get my ROMs from here : http://en.miui.com/a-234.html )
After downloading it, decompress it until you see the file extension .tgz, then unzip it once more. At the end you should have one folder which contains some files and a folder called images.
3) Research and download the ROM and custom kernel of your choice
4) Check up and research anything you are unfamiliar with ( This is a great place to start : http://forum.xda-developers.com/redmi-note-3/how-to/guide-redmi-note-3-available-twrps-t3406708 )
So, to flash the ROM, you can follow these steps. Do note that these steps worked for me at the time of writing and may not necessarily work for you.
1) Backup your stuff (Pictures, chats, contacts, etc.)
2) Go to developer options and check enable OEM unlock and ADB.
3) Reboot into bootloader.(adb reboot bootloader / vol- + pwr from power off state)
4) Use MiFlash to flash the global developer ROM you downloaded.
5) Use the MiUnlock tool to unlock your device.
6) Reboot to MIUI. (If you don't, you might face problems with TWRP demanding for password)
7) Boot to download mode again.
8) Install TWRP recovery.
9) You can now make a nandroid backup. Also make a backup of your EFS partition and keep it somewhere safe.
This assumes that you flashed the latest global developer ROM.
10) You can now flash the ROM and GApps.
11) If you want to install a custom kernel, finish setting up the phone before flashing one.
12) You can install Viper4Arise now if you want.

Rebranding to FRD-L09c10 OREO (russian)

I have found this tutorial in the comments of a tread, and it worked for me, so I decided to bring this tutorial in a new tread so everybody can easily see it:
Thanks hackslash for this tutorial.
To rebrand, you need an unlock bootloader.
1. Download the C10 oeminfo file https://mega.nz/#!aBhnDKAK!qeVVAjcApTl7fqjwHcPMUS6ITUDHL9Rx0u-4k8rx0c4. It is a zip file, extract it to find an img file. Reboot to TWRP and select Install Image and install the file to oeminfo partition.
2. Perform a complete factory reset in TWRP.
3. Download the latest Nougat (3 files package) for FRD-L09C10 through Firmware Finder. Flash it using HuRupdater https://forum.xda-developers.com/honor-9/development/tool-flash-official-firmware-recovery-t3769279.
4. After the flash is complete, reboot the device, unlock the bootloader again and flash TWRP.
5. Download the latest Oreo build for FRD-L09C10 through Firmware Finder. Using HuRupdater flash the three Oreo firmware files. Don't perform a factory reset this time.
6. Reboot your device. You're now on Oreo.
(brightness dimming still happening in some apps on oreo)
(I also have tested Pixel experience treble (GSI), and guess what? I got in bootloop, yeah... thanks huawei for the amazing software work ...)
Will I Be Able To Install Unapproved Updates With HurUpdater?
@SuperSwordSmasher Yes you can install every stock firmwares.
@immichao - can you correct the links as they do not work
Deleted
Just updated the links
About GSIs, there are special GSI for Kirin devices. And don't worry they'll be released by the OpenKirin team with support for Honor 8 shortly.

Wait On Step 3, Could Of You Just Put TWRP As "recovery.img" And Flash It And Have TWRP Still?
Does The Open Kirin 3.1.1 TWRP Work On Oreo. It Works On Nougat, But Will It Work On Oreo?
Link To The TWRP You Used For Oreo Pls

I flashed Oreo onto my FRD-L04C567 using these instructions and now my device will not connect to LTE. It stays on 3g HSPA. Do you know how to reactivate the LTE radios?

Hell yeah, I'll happily stay on RUI 1 with that issues list lol
I am using RUI 2.0 F.10 as my daily driver for normal use. I find it to be good and only not having root is my current issue.
Games and other performance is fine, issues happen with extreme settings or over long time usage on battery.
No one actually needs to lock bootloader or need DRM L1 unless have to watch OTP (Netflix, prime, etc) in high resolution or HDR.
Sir Thanks Soo Much But For ur Keen And Kind Information Bootloader Is Currently Not Unlocking Due To Some Network Error If U Really A Developer Fix That ...... Everyone Will Appreciate U For That Believe Me..

Same here, the only thing stopping me from updating now is that there is no root. Don't care about DRM.
Root I use for adaway and AccA. I have found temporary alternatives for them. Instead of adaway now I use adguard and enabled optimised night charging feature of Android 11 instead of AccA.
This open beta F.10 could be the preview of final stable release as informed by Realme

Fixed it!!!
Okay I think I've found the solution.
I never wanted custom recovery so I skipped flashing OFOX for RUI2 version.
But as I've mentioned above I was stuck in Realme, powered by android Spash screen and nothing more.
I have tried several things but nothing worked and then I did following steps and Voila! it worked.
1. Flashed ofox recovery for RUI 2.0 with fastboot.
2. flashed patched_vbmeta with following commad (use without quotes) "fastboot --disable-verity --disable-verification flash vbmeta patched_vbmeta.img"
3. executed "fastboot reboot" command in CMD fastboot.
Now I have a fully functional system and it took only 2 minutes for my first boot (data not wiped)
Thank you @hack-os for his amazing guide and anyone who stuck in splash like me, follow above steps and you'll be out
Hello, I am not a beta tester or part of open beta. Yesterday I just checked software update and there is no update. I just opened Realme Trail and I can see there is an optional update to RUI 2 and I said yes.
Today I got the update for RUI2 and I am from India.

Skipping custom recovery to have stock needs unpatched vbmeta. That why your boot got corrupted. Glad you fixed the issue with fastboot. The guide is mainly made to upgrade only with custom recovery and not using PC for fastboot.
You could still replace your recovery to stock recovery img in fastboot and flash RUI 2.0 A11 stock vbmeta
fastboot flash recovery stock_recovery_RUI2_A11.img
Could give it a try. Even i haven't tried this but that should work.
But I could not unlock the phone after the update. the phone became useless. all I can see on the phone screen is network icons and a strange lock symbol at the centre of the status bar on top of the screen. nothing worked, like hard reboot, wipe data in recovery but wipe data with format worked but I lost all data for which I am not ready.
finally, format the device from Recovery and could boot properly and experiencing RUI 2.0 with Android 11. there are no issues when compared to C37, it is working like a charm.

you can update directly by flashing the zip given with your custom recovery.
This guide is only for unlocked bootloader and phones with orange fox as custom recovery with zip file.

Updating from c.37 to F.10 Rui 2.0 does not have any issues when the instructions are followed right. It's weired to get issues to unlock the screen after updating to Rui 2.0. Share any screenshots of the strange lock symbol if it was taken. Glad, you found a way fix your problem.

Yes, it is strange. I did not do it manually from xda to follow instructions. I have received the update from Realme itself and the phone became unusable after the update until I format the device.

You may be getting it officially in India, but European and UK users have never had the option to take part in any of the beta programs.
My big worry is that when Realme eventually decide to include Europe in the rollout of the update then there is massive potential for all of the various online banking apps etc that are specific to each European country might not work, meaning that we'll have to stay on Android 10.

I cannot flash a rom!

Thank you for reading me, I am desperate, I cannot flash the oxygen os official rom by anyway.
First of all, the situation:
I have the bootloader unlocked, fastboot installed and the drivers running fine (at least that's what I think, when I type "fastboot devices" I get mine back) and I also have TWRP installed and working.
Attempts with fastbootI have tried with the fastboot image provided by mauronofrio, executing the flash-all script, it said that it was successful but it boots again in the Fastboot Mode.
I have tried flashing it manually but there are some problems while flashing some of the files
Attempt with ADBADB Sideload does not work neither
Attempt with twrpI am not able to send the rom file from my pc by any means...
I have a clue but I don't find the solution...Something similar has happened to me before, and If I am not wrong I solved it by writing the side a and b, like when installing TWRP (I am not sure 100% by if it rings a bell to someone...)
Thank you for your help
Does anybody have an idea??

Stuck in Fastboot after patched boot.img

Hello everyone, I've been rooting phones for many years and this is my first post asking for help.
The phone was on Android 12 and rooted. I think it was C.16
I tried to do a local update with oxygen updater and then use magisk to install to inactive slot. It updated and booted up however I lost root.
I flashed a patched boot image and now the phone is stuck in fastboot.
My computer recognizes fastboot and I can flash etc. however ADB does not work and the device is not recognized.
I had a spare phone that I tried to replicate the process with and it updated locally, I patched the boot image from magisk and now it is on Android 12 and fully rooted. IN2025_11_C.21
The problem phone currently says the boot image is corrupted but I am able to get it back into fastboot.
I flashed C .11, C.16 and C .21 boot.img.
I used the spare phone to create a patched boot.img and tried flashing with that.
I have tried other patched boot.imgs with various versions from the forum.
I flashed both A and B slots with stock boot.img
When I set to slot B it boots up to a strange state but it blinks a lot and then restarts after a minute or two. I was able to look at the version number and it shows C21 regardless of boot.img. See attached image. I don’t have a keyboard or any other navigation bar. Only icons. No screen lock code at boot.
I'm wondering if maybe it did a system OTA update that I missed and the phone is not on the version I suspected for example C.33 and I don't believe there is a zip file to extract a boot.img from.
If the device is in Fastboot I should be able to reboot if I find the correct boot.img, correct?
If I can update the other phone to C.33 is there a way to extract the boot.img from the device without the full OTA file?
Any help is greatly appreciated. Thank you.
There is a c.33 zip for IN2023 which is the EU version.
At least its worth a try.
