I was browsing through the gallery just now and noticed a dead pixel. Or what I thought was a dead pixel.
When swiping through the gallery, there is a picture of a pink flower, followed by a black and white photo of a man. The b&w photo is portrait. I had the phone in landscape mode.
In the black space in the top left, I noticed a red dead pixel. I swore and carried on swiping.
Next was a landscape picture of a dog, but I noticed as I continued swiping that the dead pixel was still there.
Next is a skater in portrait mode...and the dead pixel is gone!
I swipe back, it comes back.
Swipe forward, it's gone again.
Anyone else's do this? I had to do it in a dark room to notice.

This sounds like the dead pixel may be in the photo rather than the phone.
If you only get a dead pixel on specific photos, but cannot get the same result on any other screen on the phone, then it is probably the photo.
Take a photo so that the image is black (photo dark piece of cloth) if resulting picture has dead pixel, it is phone screen and you have a dead pixel, but one pixel should not cause too much problem.
With LCD screens, normally there is a percentage of pixels that can be faulty before it is classed as defective under warranty or sale of goods act.

That's what I originally thought, but the dead pixel remains stationary when swiping between the photos! It's so strange!

If you see a red pixel illuminated against what should be black, you could have a stuck subpixel. A "dead" pixel implies the inverse; a black pixel where there should be colour.
On the photo of the man in black&white, with the phone rotated landscape, there are black spaces either side of the photo as it was taken in portrait.
On my phone, these black spaces are pure black.
When you display a picture with colour that occupies the space of the pixel in question, you wont notice it. Each pixel has three smaller subpixels that make up the colour; a red, green, and blue one. When the stuck pixel's nextdoor neighbours switch on, you won't notice the problem. The problem is that this pixel won't turn off.
If you want to return the phone, I'd make your mind up and do so as soon as possible while you still can - but perhaps using the proximity sensor thing as the reason, as most manufacturers/shops won't accept dead/stuck pixels as a return reason unless theres several of them, or if they're right in the middle of the screen.

I'm not sure if you're understanding me. It's actually ok, just not when looking at that particular photo! I'm just trying to understand why. It's fine everywhere else, just not on that photo. But its not the photo as it doesn't move with the photo when it swipe.

Did you change the UI skin from the default?
A red pixel is just stuck, I had one on my laptop and I used a program the flashed colours over it and after an hour it was gone, a black pixel will be there for life ..
It happens will lcd sometimes
Doubt anyone has made a program on the android market for this though

Daft question but have you tried deleting the photo and seeing if it moves to the next or is gone for good?

I saw it. It's kind of a glowing red light more than a stuck pixel. Very strange indeed.

Yep - very strange. I think you have full rights to write HTC about this and ask for explanations.
Hey,I know apart from dead pixels,there are some other 'bad pixels' like colourful pixel(sorry,I translate it directly from Chinese,that's what we call them.There must be an English name.) and white pixel.Different kinds of bad pixels behave various from different colours of background.That's why you can see them in some situations while some you can't.We often test 'bad pixels' of screens of laptops with several colours of background when shopping.

another test i did was with an image I created (attached), half black half white. open in gallery and slide it so more black shows, or more white shows. The whole screen changes brightness!
My friend's S2 does the same.

That's actually a power-saving feature you can turn off.
Go into Settings -> Display -> Scroll down and untick 'Auto adjust screen power'.

Basically even when you are not moving picture, have a look near the border.
There is definite grey banding near the border. It kinda looks like white is bleeding into the black.
And its there on every SGS2, every single one. It can be hardware or software issue.
@OP. you are definitely not alone. I was actually having talk with my friends in UK. 6 of us now have SGS2. 2 are from O2, 3 from P4U and 1 from Handtec and mine is from Clove.
All are experiencing same thing. Its definitely not your eyes.

It's an option in the Display settings - auto adjust screen brightness after analysing image or something similar.
Samsung thing, I think, since my Omnia 7 with Windows Phone did exactly the same thing. It's trying to save you power and completely normal.

Thanks very much guys, I think I can accept it if it's all built like that. With that option off it really helped! (I feel a lil retarded now). But for some reason that test image I made still has that dimming effect (double tap it in the gallery, this instant change makes it obvious), but maybe that's normal, not fussed. (normal web browsing is perfect)
And no I didn't exchange any phones. Mine does have a dead pixel tho. Can anyone check their screens for dead pixels for me? I know someone had blue lines and stuff on their units, that's a bit drastic. I'm just wondering how many actually have say 1 dead pixel, so I have a better picture before I actually exchange mine or something.

Nah, no dead pixels or other screen issues here. If you have dead pixel, i would return it.
Here is the video, its not clear as camera limitations dont really show it properly, but at 720P you can see it for fraction of second, that is not the lens glare but screen turning grey right above the white border.

As mentioned, its a power saving feature as AMOLED screens don't like whites as they drain power, they prefer blacks. So reducing the brightness helps to save battery.

I can see it grey in the video, almost like that gingerbread scroll limit effect. very hard to see in the video though, would have just said it was the camera.
Yea I'm considering returning. In my other post, I mentioned how Handtec got back to me. In short, not fault since only 1 pixel, but told me I can exchange/return within 7 days. But, they said since it's not a fault, I'll have to pay shipping both ways. (£28 per way, ouch)

Just a thought, could not the grey area when moving a black/white border area simply be the screen pixels taking a few milliseconds to go from completely dim, to grey, then to completely white, ie just a response time, albeit a bit slower than what I would have guessed?
On my SGS, going into a completely black app drawer with bright icons and moving around, it also has a very slight dragging effect on some white/black constrasting areas?
I just got my warranty replacement yesterday. Noticed last night in a dark room that there is a small stuck blue pixel in the virtual soft button area, really an eye-sore. My first device had a hole in the backlight that looks like a big spec of dirt, so not as bad as that, but still irritating. I always seem to have the worst luck with ordering electronics (went through 5 sensations going around the warranty system )
Does anybody know of a way that it might be possible to fix this pixel? It's only visible when there is any blue or white on the screen above it. So if I download that pixel fix app and set the background color to blue, that stuck pixel screams, but if I set it to black or gray, it's not visible at all. It's only on if something above it is on. Almost like it's a short in the signal or something. Anybody know of a way to fix it? I've tried the pixel-fix it apps to no avail, albeit I haven't tried for more than 5 minutes.

Pixel fixer apps don't really work, some may report success only because it is an intermittent pixel fault that will just come back or would have fixed itself anyway. If it was as easy as flicking through a serious of colours the manufacturers of LCD panels would do this already as it costs them loads of money in throwing away panels with faulty pixels.
Some pixels will fix with gentle pressure, but often will just come back.
I'm sorry to say the only option is an exchange.

You have a faulty pixel that corrects itself sometimes when given a little bit of flexing as would happen when you touch the screen. It is unlikely to spread to other pixels, but one day the pixel may become stuck red permanently or may just fix itself for good.
It isn't uncommon to have pixels like that, although with improvements in manufacturing it's getting rarer. If you think it will annoy you, you have little option but get it exchanged.

Its a strangely behaving pixel too. It only shows if there are a lot of blue sub pixels activated on the screen. Example, if the entire screen is blue, the stuck pixel will scream, but if its red, green, or black on then rest of the screen (dark video or picture or something) the pixel is black. Unlike any stuck pixel I've had before. Only stuck blue if the rest of the screen has blue... And if the pixel is supposed to be showing black. If it's showing white or gray, it'll function properly, but if it's supposed to be black, it'll be blue.

I don't know if anyone else have this issue since nobody has mention it on this forum or ZTE USA forum but there's a weird image rendering bug on mine. It basically shows a bunch of white dots that look like dead pixel across the screen horizontally. It comes and goes but it's pretty damn annoying to see.
So, it seen i am the only one with this issue. Strange.

It reminds me of dead or stuck pixels on a DSLR sensor. DSLR's often have some means of mapping them out, but I doubt that smartphones have that capability.
Might want to read up on this and then decide if you want to return your device or have it repaired. Kind of a bummer, considering the short supply atm.

But they're also showing up on screenshots, so it can't be an issue with the physical display. Makes me think it's some sort of software/driver issue.
Do these white pixels always show up in the same location? The shot you posted (with the flashlight) has a fairly well defined diagonal line/pattern, running from the bottom left to top right. Can you see the white pixels on a non-black background, like a light colored wall-paper? When you say "screen-shot", do you mean taken with an app on the phone?

It's a rendering issue not a dead pixel issue, which is good. The white pixels come and goes. The screenshot was taking on the phone with three finger pinch.
I factory reset the phone and the issue is still there which is extremely odd. I might have to RMA just for this stupid bug.
Might be memory issues or something else with the SOC. I'd definitely RMA.
Ever get a fix for this? I have the same issue and I don't want to have to wait for a return, just got the device today on my birthday :/
I have this issue on a couple of screens, one being my dialer. Here is a zoomed in screen shot. Seems I've seen it in one other display, but haven't noticed it since. I wonder about a fix?
Edit: I've kept the phone, tho I occasionally have a screen with this minor bug. It's clearly not dead pixels, but some software bug. It's so minor. I just wanted to bring it to light in case there was more to it, or a fix.

It's actually possible for an effect that looks like this to be caused by memory errors. I'd RMA the phone.
Yea, i started the RMA process with advance exchange.
FYI, call 800-617-5065 instead of the CS number they have on their site.
Axon 7 customer are "VIP" apparently and that number goes straight to a CS rep right away. Kudo for ZTE for that.
Having the same white dots pop up on my Axon 7. Thought I was alone on this one. It doesn't show up in my pictures, but only the camera application. Maybe I could live with this.

Hello guys, suddenly I'm having display issues on my k20. I've attached a link to the video, when i pull down the notification bar, look how the blacks are loading a bit late. When i turn off dark mode, i see no issues like this, it's just the beautiful display again. Even i had same issues with my dark wallpaper. Please check, if you've same issues. I'm really concerned about it. Also, this maybe screen flickering but when i increased brightness, the issue didn't disappear, it was still persistent but at lower levels.

1st: If this is the display problem, how can you expect we can see this on a screen capture??
2nd (probably because of the 1st): I can't see anything wrong.

Can't you see that voilet-ish colour instead of black when I'm swiftly moving the notification bar? It's clearly visible in video, you might want to check again.
Nope, watched it at least 5 times, on my PC and my 9T. Can't see anything peculiar.
I can not see anything wrong or violet at all. Am playing this on my computer at 1080 resolution and 0.25 playback speed and there is nothing to see.
If your screen is faulty, we are not able to see it on video you have shared with us of course

It's normal for OLED panels, some are better, some worse. My phone has it too. No need to go to the service center.
I too have it brother. Dark mode has it normal mode doesn't. It can also be noticed if you open youtube and scroll back and forth quickly. The blacks seem to be spilling or streching. I saw that on your video and I don't know if it is normal or not but i too have that and wanted to ask someone about that.

People are claiming this to be normal, but after searching a lot i got to know these kind of issues come after 1-2years, not in a week or month. So I'm trying my best to replace my device or get the screen changed. I don't understand why Xiaomi is keeping the colours to pure blacks when they know their displays are facing smearing issues. I hope someone just changes that pure black colour to very dark grey colour, system widely. Some developer tested(on OP7 pro) the battery consumption difference with pure black and dark grey and it turned out that, dark grey consumes only 0.067% more power than dark inky blacks. I'm humbly requesting developers to change the colour, or at least have an option for the same.
My display when there is low light, the brightness is set to low and the image I see on the display is darkish I can see a vertical line at the left side of the display, is this normal or should I return It?
It's normal for Amoled screens (from first day of use). Just search for Amoled black smearing and you'll find a lot of videos and articles. S10 has it, iPhones have it too.

I have faint vertical lines on the right of the display when the brightness is low which is how I normally use it. I also have black smearing on pitch black to dark color transition. I think thats normal, it doesn't really bother me all that much.
The best way to reproduce this issue is turn off brightness to minimum and turn on reading mode to max. Then you'll see delay of displaying some colors (mostly gray)

Interestingly when i record this from screen recorder,it doesn't show up much but the same can be seen visually. So, this is definitely an issue that redmi is trying to let go.

As you "record from screen recorder" you do not record from the screen as you may like to think. You capture the video signal BEFORE it gets to the screen. So any imperfections caused by the amoled screen do not show up on a screen capture.
Anyway, this is a normal weakness with all amoled screens that I have seen.
It is soooo annoying when in dark mode at low brightness, I feel like I couldn't stand it anymore. The worst experience of display usage ever.
Maybe with DC dimming update that might happen someday, the issue won't be as intrusive and pronounce as it is right now. But whenn???
UPDATE:
So I found a workaround for this issue with an app. It's called Screen Balance. Basically it adds a filter overlay on your screen (ineffective on notification panel, because android restriction). Set it to either flourescent or flourescent (warm) at 15% strength minimum, and both brightness and contrast at 100%. You won't see perfect black anymore, but very close to that and no smearing effects visible unless you're really trying to.
I've bought Mi 9T Pro and have the same issue (also see it in your video). Did you fixed that?
