I've tried porting over the oppo find 5 version of paranoid android to no avail anyone have a clue why? Kind of new to this so anything helps. Not even sure if it can be done.

Yes we do, many CM based and there is one that's just CM. Look in the Android development, and Original Android Development threads. You'll see then there.

Do i download the up to date nightly? Its only 259MB.. cant find the main rom.. uness the nightly is the main rom?

The nightly is the full ROM, but you need to download gapps as well and flash them too.

His current operating system crashes often .

There is another ROM ( not original device came with him ) that he is faster / better I can use it ?

There's oxyslim is very stable and fast, based on stock.
There's also cm12 and cm13 but they lack of finger print and laser focus
