android router selection at boot. - Networking

i use a router with 14 access pounts
spread around from my android 8.00 phone. One of them has good Rf signal (-46) but no net connectivity
(speedtest = 0.000). At phone restart
android always chooses this bad
Access point. I am using network analyzer pro to test. There is tons
info on the internet about testing
but no info on fixing. This is a
commercial facility. I have no
access to sysadmin. I just want
to get around this problem.
how to proceed?

wifi channel problem

In my house I have set up 2 wiress routers. One of them is the main router assigning dhcp and is on channel 1. The other is acting as an access point and is broadcasting on channel 6. Both are using the same ssid, and all of the security settings are the same. Anyway the network works fine. All devices flip to the strongest channel while roaming throughout the house, except this one. This one is locked on the weaker router (further away). I have tried forgetting the network and re-adding it. Any ideas? Is there a way to force the wifi on this to a specific channel?
I use a free app called Wifi Analyzer. You might install the app and look through the various screens to see what is going on in your network (they are easy to use). This will allow you to confirm the actual signal strength at various points in your home. It is possible that one of your neighbors might be using a channel that is interfering with yours. The app will help you understand what is happening.
thanks for the speedy reply! I actually have that app also and love it. that is basically how I know that it's using the weaker channel. I don't have nieghbors so that is not a problem. the biggest thing going to point me in the direction of something wrong on the Samsung is that I have a couple of thunderbolts, an incredible, and 2 wifi laptops that under testing all switch channels correctly.
So I just took another look at wifi analyzer. One of the sceens asked me to instal wifi connector. After I installed that I was able to connect to the specific channel. So thanks again !

Looking for a way to block specific WiFi signals.

I live very close to a hotel which has multiple SSID's that keep interfering with my ability to stay connected to my router.
I've tried hard coding a static ip on the phone, adding the mac address to router, even went as far as creating a separate unhidden network just for the phone. So far, nothing has worked.
So i was thinking that maybe there's a way to have the phone ignore certain signals, lock on to a preferred one or use WiFi but turn off the scanning feature. The only problem is that I haven't been able to find any settings or Apps that will allow me to do it.
So, if anyone has any ideas or suggestions as how, or if, I can make this work, I would greatly appreciate it.
I'm using a Droid 2 Rooted with 2.3.3 and have a Netgear N750 router.
BTW - none of the computers in the house are having this issue.

So, are you saying the phone constantly tries to leave your home wifi in favor of attempting to connect to the hotel's?
Yes, unless I'm within about 5 feet of my router, the hotel's signal makes the phone keep dropping and reconnecting over and over again.
Sent from my DROID2 using XDA App
Are the hotel's hotspots not WEP secured? That is so odd. If they're unsecured hotspots go over to the hotel and tell them to get their sh*t in order. Otherwise I'm out of ideas, sorry.
No, they are secure. WPA2 as is mine. I don't connect to them. My phone just detects them, drops my connection and tries to connect to them. So that leaves me with no connection and having to use 3G.
But there may be an easier solution to this. After spending a few hours on the Netgear site, it turns out that there is a bug in their firmware that causes signal strength fluctuations. They said a new release should be available in a few weeks.
In the meantime I've changed the channel on the router to auto select which seems to be helping.
I do appreciate you taking the time to assist.
Thanks!
Scott

Glad there's at least some kind of work around, wish I was of more assistance.
Having a similar problem with a samsung galaxy sii - current internet configuration is through AT&T U-Verse with built in Wireless G router in there Gateway. tried adding a Netgear dual band N router to my network and with the netgear's 2 wifi signals on then my phone just constantly goes into scanning mode and keeps trying to connect between the 3 - things work fine with the wifi turned off in the new netgear kind of defeating the purpose of me installing it - was hoping to have the phone use one of the N signals..
Block bt openzone connection pleaseee!
Desperately need an app for this? Is it not going to be possible for a way to block certain wifi signals because I'm actually going to rip next doors BT openzone router out of the wall and get a hammer to it! My HTC desire hd is insistent on connecting to its poor signal over our excellent one and the worst part is that you can't actually access the network unless you pay BT for a user account! Grrrr.... Please help
Try to connect the network you dont want, then go to wifi management in settings. Long press on the network you dont want and hit forget network. Then your phone shouldnt automatically connect to it unless you tell it to.

Odd place to ask this, but I would say try out Tor Browser. Also try Firefox portable (assuming you can stick a flash drive in the computer), there seems to be something about it, can't explain it, my tethering isn't blocked on it, but is on IE, and at my work websense doesn't seem to be able to block me.
Oh, if you get fired for non-work related web-browsing, I claim no responsibility.

Will changing the DNS Server solve this? Or using a VPN or web proxy?

well that depends, if your admin is worth his pennies then no, it wont help at all.
setup a white list on the physical router to the outside world and your snookered.
If they have just blocked access via the DNS server and its simply unable to resolve names then you could try bring up the command prompt and ping a website via its IP address type
ping 208.67.222.222
if that works then change your DNS server to that IP address, its an OpenDNS server, very good as it happens, if it doesn't then your screwed unless they are operating a black list, but that's just stupid as you could simply find a website not black listed or make your own that uses a frame to redirect to a site of your choosing.
NB, they might have locked that ip address too so try some others, less obvious ones
the trick is finding out how they have blocked you first, then you can see if there is a way, but white lists are a real pain in the arse, they might even just run a proxy server and have cached sites on that, if they are running a proxy server you could try and delete those settings, just make sure you write all this down or your admin will likely get a bit pissed off at you...
and a final point to remember, your often blocked for a good reason and that reason is usually in your contract of employment, you connecting to sites your not supposed to will stick out like a sore thumb on the router logs as well so as ^ said, if you get fired its not our fault
I used to work at a hospital that started blocking us from alot of sites. We eventually figured out they were using Symantec to do it so everyday we would uninstall it. Some days it would last all day, others it would last 10 minutes but we could usually wait and uninstall it again to regain access. We used xp on all the computers and we were assigned to different pods almost daily so we never were caught; not that they couldn't figure it out if they tried. If they are using Symantec then you may be able to uninstall it, otherwise you may be screwed.
I am still a RN and goto school with my patient. We are blocked on laptops from certain sites but I am not blocked on my phone. I can tether my phone to my laptop and it allows me access for some reason. I'm unsure if this is an option but figured I would throw it out there.

Symantec .....XP
**shudders**
is it at all possible that even though you have your phone connected via wifi that it still has a GPRS or HSPA signal? if so then its probably bulking at the lack of access on the wifi then switches to GPRS.

Ya I agree about the xp and Symantec but with 2000+ terminals, I'm sure it was the simpliest solution.
When I'm tethering my laptop via phone at the school, we don't have cell coverage in the majority of the rooms, which is why they give us a basic internet access so I don't believe I'm pulling in my mobile data, if I'm understanding your question correctly.
I'm back there on Friday and will see what's being blocked before tethering and then see what my data is looking like afterwards. I was "assuming " they were running different security for the mobile devices, allowing the loophole, but could be wrong.

Wifi in cafe needs login - Tasker?

Every day I go to my local coffee shop. When I want to connect to the net, my Nexus shows wifi points available and I choose the appropriate one for the cafe. It doesn't need a password, but it does show a webpage where you have to agree to the terms by click the Ok button.
Is there anyway to automate this, or get around this? Its such a pain in the ass! I have Tasker if that makes any difference.
Thanks,
Jon
That is called a captive portal and no.
Or called a splash page. I worked for a hotel wifi company and we used devices called "nomadix." When you connect, the device gives you an IP, then sticks you in a pending stage until you click OK or Accept on the portal page. Until then, it won't let any IP based traffic through. Usually there's a timeout that they can modify. But being in a cafe, I highly doubt it. They're probably using a walmart bought wifi router with ddwrt firmware. I know starbucks has a splash page for their wifi.
Well, there is *sort* of a way around it, but not very convenient for cafes/etc. I am currently staying at a hotel that has said portal to access the WiFi network. What I have done is connected to said WiFi network with my laptop, then utilized "connectify" to re-transmit that authorized WiFi to me and my wife's devices. Basically turning my laptop into a wireless router. Another plus is that I can set my own WEP/WPA/etc protection to the retransmitted signal. So while this may not be a solution for cafes, etc - it certainly is a fantastic one for hotels!

I believe there are a few apps in the market which can automate this for some portals, but it's basically just scraping the page and trying to guess some information to put in, etc, so it won't work 100% of the time.
I haven't used any, so no specific suggestions, but here's a few from search:
https://play.google.com/store/search?q=wifi login
i have this exact problem with the wifi in the pub i chef in. our broadband is provided by HEINEKEN beer. we also must connect then load browser window to accept terms.
the pub owner would also like it removed to allow people to auto-connect in the normal way because obviously when a customer steps outside for a ciggerette as it is illegal to smoke inside a public place in the uk now,. they would then need to keep re-connecting theyre phones/tablets...
ive managed to switch a total of 8 staff and about 25 customers to ditching ios for android there normaly at least 3 nexus 7's at any one time in my pub now :victory::victory: and our bar now also has nfc tags.
The app Wi-fi web login seems to be working for me.

Mobile Data Only App

The other day I came across a new option in the connections settings menu called "Mobile Data Only Apps". And it says the apps you select will ALWAYS use Mobile Data, even when connected to WiFi.
This is something that has never existed in android before and is an absolute godsend because I have been trying to get something like this to work on my phone's over the years, with no good solution. My work WiFi restricts VOIP calls so apps features like WhatsApp and signal calls do not function while I am at work.
The only problem for me is that it does not seem to work as I am still unable to get these VOIP calls to function consistently when I am at work. I have enabled mobile data always on in developer mode, but the VoIP calls still don't work. Has anyone else had success with this.
Interesting, will try to set some apps to see how it works...

It actually now works consistently, however, it requires both wifi and data connections to be rock solid. When I'm on LTE and the Wifi is strong, I am able to receive WhatsApp and signal calls without issue (work WiFi restricts access to both VoIP calls). However when the connection drops from LTE, the dual connection doesn't work so well.
Good job Samsung.

Only if you can find a way to restrict certain services on your router. If you know the ports used by certain apps like VoIP, you could block those on your wifi router and then have the apps use mobile data only.
I am really excited about this since Android never allowed simultaneous network connectivity in the past. I don't know if this is a Samsung only feature but it's great.

LimeyBastard,
I just figured out a much better way of testing the feature without touching your router.
1. While connected to your home WiFi, Open up a browser app (I prefer Firefox focus since it's in incognito mode by default), go to one of those IP address checking sites like whatismyip.com and take note of the IP address.
2. After this go to settings and allow the browser app to access mobile data only.
3. Without disconnecting from the wifi network, close the browser app and reopen it and then check your IP address. It should be different from the initial IP you got under WiFi (it should show you the IP of your cell network provider.)
I checked my wife's Note 8 and this feature isn't present, so it appears it's an S10 only feature for now, but I could be wrong.

I have attached mine as well. Is your cellular data ISP different from your home internet provider? Also did you refresh the browser (I force stop it and then reopen before checking the IP). Also ensure the browser is one of the apps listed as using mobile data on the persistent notification.

Yes, my cell service T Mobile and my home wifi is charter comms.
Edit . So I just reinstalled firefox then before launching it I changed the setting for it to use mobile data only. And it seems to work. Weird.

No. Seems like most of the non-stock android OEMs have this feature, just not the stock android itself.
