I just received my Nexus 6P and absolutely love it.
I am wondering if any of you have had good experiences with any utility/tool apps for this device. Apps such as Greenify, CM Cleaner, etc. are a couple I've heard of and was curious if these are helpful or not.
Thanks!
I don't use any utility apps so my response is probably not what you're looking for. There's not really a need for Greenify anymore since Marshmallow introduced Doze unless you want Aggressive Doze mode found in Greenify -- which is again unnecessary if you're using Android N Developer Preview which features an aggressive Doze mode.
Not sure too much on CM Cleaner, but if I had to use one I'd probably use CCleaner since I use it frequently on the PC and it works really well. If you choose to not use a cleaner, someone on here or Reddit reported clearing your cache every-so-often from Settings > Storage & USB > Cached data is useful and may even improve battery life.
Synapse - for use with AK kernel.
Naptime and Servicely by Franco are both nice apps.
Recently by chainfire helps keep recent apps section from being over crowded and adds some extra features.
Then you have the more common stuff you likely already use like "better battery stats", "adaway", " afwall+",.... Not sure about greenify on Marshmallow, I believe the Doze feature built into android does something similar to all apps, but do not quote me on that as I don't really know how how they work, just greenify put apps to sleep and then google calls it doze which is just another word for sleep.
+1 to the not necessary argument.
Get viper4android to improve your audio. Ex Kernel Manager is also pretty awesome. Otherwise explore and see what fits your needs!

You definitely don't need anything like CM Cleaner, those things are total rubbish, they use more resources than they claim to save. Doze is pretty good at getting the device to sleep when it isn't in use, but some people still use Greenify. I use BetterBatteryStats to monitor to power consumption, f.lux to automatically adjust screen temp at night, Faster GPS to aid in getting a quick GPS lock, and Flashfire for flashing certain things when I absolutely need to on the go.
I use All in One Toolbox to control the myriad of aggressive apps that feel they should launch/run everything i start my phone.
Thanks for the replies guys!
I plan on rooting the 6P today, and I have had experience with such apps as SetCPU, Rom Toolbox, etc. But that has probably been about 2 years ago.
What are the go-to root apps for stock android (not sure I'm ready for ROMs yet)?
1. Flashfire, very powerful tool for flashing things (especially useful for taking OTAs when rooted).
2. Ampere Measures current going in while charging, (pretty useful when my fast charger broke).
3. Naptime , improves standby time immensely (Doze on screen off).
4. Faster GPS, much faster GPS lock as I dont really like leaving location on all the time.
5. BetterBatteryStats, huge info on power consumption.
6. F.lux, (Changes colour temperature based on location and sunsets, warmer colours after sunset, less obtrusive to the eyes.
7. Adaway, gets rid of ads ... yay
8. Viper4Android, best EQ and FX processor available.
Using an A2017U B29 stock rooted. I find the phone to be generally laggy, especially in opening apps or switching apps, but even in things like SwiftKey appearing… My OnePlus One felt faster. And also (separate issue, I understand) double-tap to wake is slow, as is screen-on in general.
Please share your tips for speeding up the phone. If you can include links to tutorials or explanation threads where relevant, even better!
Thanks :good:
That's sorta unanswerable but my first cheap tip is to disable window and menu animations. I imagine some manufacturers tweak the timings so you don't feel the lag- I mean... animations are intentional lag, right?
Just go into developer settings near the bottom and turn them to whatever the next to lowest setting is. Personally I just disable the 3 animation settings because they're dumb. A window fade-in/out effect is telling your computer to do a math equation each time you switch a window. I'd rather the window simply open.
The same goes for 3d and transparency.. Unnecessary math. Even Microsoft got rid of the Windows Vista orb start button in Windows 7 because it shaves a few cpu cycles off to render a square versus a circle.
get fstrimm from the playstore
Thanks! I had turned off some of the animations already but turned off the other two now as well. Didn't see a big difference. Not sure how to turn off 3d and transparency (and wouldn't that affect how apps look?).
Moved my photos and videos to the SD card… that helped, too.

Thanks — I did. Not sure yet if it made a difference... Moved my photos and videos to the SD card… that also helped.
Upgrade to the ZTE Axon Dmix7 custom ROM. You can dirty flash it and continue using your software since it is just an optimized Stock ROM. It is by far more agile than the Stock B29. It is fully reversible, since you can also dirty flash the stock B29 ROM again.
On top of that you can increase your user experience by more than 10% by reformatting your data partition to F2FS. This process is also reversible and very easy following the guide you can find in my signature.
I am using AKT kernel tweaks for SD820 since 3 days. My phones feels blazing fast now, and batterylife improved too. Check it out!

(you need to be rooted and unlocked to use this)
I'm posting this based on a number of requests from other users; regarding optimization of the OnePlus 3T. In general I feel like this phone is already very good. Has great performance and a solid battery. The one issue I suffered was the "Mobile Radio Active" bug. I will explain more about it in this guide.
NOTE - This guide isn't finished yet. I'll try my best to get to it when I get a chance, but for the time being I will share with you all what I have documented so far. Some of my content was referenced from other online sources, so I want to be sure that I state that.
If you have any questions, suggestion, or are interested in adding to this, please let me know.
Before we begin, I’ll start out by listing my configured device. My configuration may be different than yours due to the rom. If you use a custom rom, you need to be careful with some of the options.
That being said…
I am using the 64Gb OnePlus 3T. My bootloader is unlocked, my device is rooted using SuperSU v 2.79 and I use the custom recovery “TWRP 3.0.4-1”
The applications I use:

Xposed Framework - http://dl-xda.xposed.info/framework/sdk23/arm64/xposed-v87-sdk23-arm64.zip
Some of these are personal preference so you don’t need them if you don’t want to.
NOTE – Also, I am on Stock OOS 3.5.4. The reason for this is because I was experiencing battery drain due to a bug known as “Mobile Radio Active”. This is a bug that affects users even with the new OS, and unfortunately I don’t think it has been fixed even with Nougats new doze feature. Basically even though doze is enable, your radio still draws battery in the background even though it’s not in use. Xposed has a plugin to fix this issue; however since Xposed isn’t available for Nougat this is why I am still on Marshmallow.
You can read more about the bug here:
https://forum.xda-developers.com/xposed/modules/xposed-mobileradioactivefix-t3189393
And the fix is here:
http://repo.xposed.info/module/com.pyler.mobileradioactivefix
This is a fairly in-depth tut, so I’ll try to go through this as quickly and painlessly as I can. If you have any questions, feel free to ask.

POWERNAP
Power Nap for Xposed is the SONY's stamina mod for non-Sony devices. When your screen is off, Power Nap maximizes your device's deep sleep time by stopping services, alarms and wakelocks from waking the device when the screen is off. You can get notification from the apps you've whitelisted.
Set the Endurance Mode to Always ON.
You can use Power Nap along with Greenify and Amplify for a better sleep time. You have to whitelist both Greenify and Amplifyfor proper working of both the modules.
If you use IMs and need Push Notifications, you have to whitelist those apps along with Greenify and Amplify.
See My list Of whitelisted apps.(Varies according to users):

Greenify and L-Speed in 2K17. haHAA
Ignore the idiot above i have proven greenify makes a difference because doze on the go is a thing. Why are you using 3 doze apps that essentially do the same thing, just use one.
Also get rid of L-speed its a pile of crap flash franco kernal and use the battery profile or flash elemental x and use AKT.
Regarding that bug can't you just disable synch on everything that's what i did on everything except gmail and calander and i have no issue
@EuEra
Yeah regarding the doze, I was trying to figure out which one worked best for me. I'm still trying to figure out which one does the best job.
Which doze app do you recommend? Also thanks for your suggestion of the kernel. I can give them a try and see which one suits me. Do you have a preference between the 2 you mentioned?
One of the doze apps that I use actually does a good job of stopping all sync's like you mentioned, but I have to look back at it and try to figure out which option would work best for me. I appreciate the input though. As I mentioned if I get some more time I'll try to investigate this a little further and update it.
Also, are you running Marshmallow or Nougat? If nougat, which firmware are you on?
@xpissio - Lspeed might be unneeded, but you don't have to come off negative. You laugh about it, and maybe it's unnecessary for the OP3T, but I will tell you when I had the S7 it was a VERY much needed app due to the lag of Touchwiz and Samsungs overbloated crap on the device. In that regard, I do find the application useful, and maybe some other will too.
As for Greenify, I do believe that's a solid app and it DOES indeed help all phones regardless of how good your battery and performance is.

Personally i prefer elemental x with the AKT tweaks you get a lot of control over what specifically you want for example i use the extreme battery saving profile (there are about 6 different profiles each for performance, balanced and battery) just search oneplus 3 akt in google. A lot of people love franco kernal as well it has 1 profile for each he has an app to go with it a free one and a paid one with more features.
I only use naptime, i am on the latest nougat 7.1.1 OOS 4.1.1 obviously i don't have exposed or i would use power nap as well. I think it's worth backing up and trying the latest OOS unless you really need xposed or something.
What battery time are you getting? On average i get 2.5-3 days with 6-8 hours screen time.
I get what you're getting now in terms of battery life, but when I went to nougat, I was lucky to get a day out of my battery. I don't even use it that often. I mean I use facebook once or twice a day for maybe 15 mins, I don't play games, I use hangouts as my messenger, but most of the time I message from my computer as it is. Honestly I was shocked when I barely had a day out of the phone because when I went to the battery stats it only had about6 apps listed there and they were all system apps. Then when I went to "Cell Standby" option I could see the Mobile Radio active was consuming the 2nd most amount of battery despite screen being off and device being idle.
Anyway, thanks for your input. I went ahead and tried the franco kernel atm on my current MM rom, but I will consider giving Nougat another shot. Thanks for your feedback!
OnePlus 3T with Resurrection Remix Nougat (Official)
Normal use: 1,5-2 days (Selected sync on, dual-sim, Data always on, Auto-brightness) - Phone calls, Messaging, Messanger, bit of Facebook and Insta or YouTube.
SOT ~ 7-9hrs (best results were about <11hrs, but in my opinion it's not something that you can get while normally using your phone).
My suggestions:
- turn off selected syncs, that you don't necessary need (in my case Google Docs, Photos etc.)
- Ambient Display
- Low on gestures
- Dark themes in custom roms or Dark Mode in OOS
- Animations in 0.5x or nothing
- Don't kill apps in recents, let it work by itself
- Turn off auto update apps or notify about updates
- Low on widgets
- Turn off background data in Facebook/Instagram and all unnecessary apps
- Turn off vibrations, if it's not that important to you
- Get rid of Google App and Google Now if you're not using it
- Block location authorizations as often as you can
- Use dark wallpapers

Dzieki Potr!
Jesus, 9 Apps, Xposed, And a page long list of blocking stuff? And in the end you randomly stop getting notifications (my experience with greenify)?
On my Note 4 i did similar things to get through the day (2 hours SoT) but the 3T is really great in that regarde.
I'm on stock OB4, Franco Kernel without battery tweaks. No aggressive doze, or any battery saving options and i get over 3 days of standby with 6 hours SoT. This includes BT Streaming which drains without the screen being on.
I really see no need for any restrictions on this phone. Except when you install Facebook. Which you should never do. It's a well known fact that facebook drains your battery like crazy. Even if you never actively open it throughout the day.
about L Speed: It depends on the phone and on the usage. On my Galaxy S5 and My Oneplus X I can get like 30% more SOT with a little bit more performance. My 3T I can user three days and I have a 6h SOT. With L-Speed 6.5 - 7h. But it doesn't make the screen on time better for me, rather the screen off. I have with L-Speed 0.2% battery drain in a hour with the screen off, compared to 0.7-0.9% without.
My advice: Try it out and give the amazing dev a feedback. He's very friendly and he helps if you have a bad result.
If you have lower performance or more battery drain with L-Speed and you don't wanna give feedback, just uninstall it and reboot -> all changes are back to stock
Thanks all! The feedback is all good. The problem with phones is everyones experience is going to be a little different. I agree facebook/messenger drains battery, but there are other apps as well that do the same... playstore, google now, etc... I like googlenow because of the updates I get for weather, sports things like that. However it does use up battery and resources in the background even when it's not in use. Facebook; same thing. I like staying in touch with friends and family. If there was a less resource hog version of these apps I'd definitely consider without it limiting my options. The utilities I posted are just some of my preferences, but I'm always open to hear suggestions and others' recommendations.
I agree with the battery life, in general I'd say it's very good, but from my experiences in the past I just had bad luck I suppose with the "mobile radio active" bug; as I have explained above. It's really a hit or miss sort of thing. I've done clean installs, full wipes, etc and it seems to still be hit or miss for me. At first I had several days and then after about a week or 2, I noticed the battery life dropped significantly. That's when I used these utilities to help out with the life of the battery and for me it made a difference.
I actually REALLY like nougat, but I also use a few plugins I really like that require Xposed framework, which obviously isn't supported in nougat yet. I've been busier than normal last several weeks, but if I get a chance to backup everything I might consider doing another clean install of nougat and see how things go.
these features can also be found in the custom roms anyway

1st of all thank you for the post and for other people who replied , I think ( hope ! ) That I learned something , and I'll try to implement it.
2nd as you said for Facebook alternative I can recommend "Friendly" or the other option is "Simple" it's a framework app for the Facebook web , try I think you will get it useful and battery friendly
Never liked the Facebook app for Android and never understood the need to make two separate apps. The need for the app then the messenger is totally useless. There are tons of Facebook alternatives, but why download those alternatives when you can view Facebook through mobile browser. You would think that with the billions Facebook makes they'd have a better R&D team working on a better Facebook app without 50 permissions and battery hog.

Why even bother for any apps when you can get notifications of Facebook on chrome
I've been running OldDroid's OpenKirin for Honor 8 on my US (C567) Mate 9 for a few days and I'm very happy with it. It fixed the main bugs I've experienced with EMUI 8 since the Oreo upgrade. Those bugs include widgets not updating after a half hour even when exempted from battery optimization, some apps not working (e.g. US Topo, a GPS hiking app, that was battery-optimized to stop even when exempted from battery optimization), and EMUI's favoring its own launcher over third party launchers like Nova, sometimes to the point of crashing. Then there were irritants like apps that I don't use that couldn't be removed, EMUI lockscreen wallpaper whose magazine no longer updates. If I wanted to be tightly controlled, I'd buy an iphone.
So with Wirmpolter's patient help, I took the plunge and installed AOSP, specifically OldDroid's OpenKirin for the Honor 8. This is a treble-based OS, with some specialization for the Kirin processor. I've written an installation guide aimed at a relatively inexperienced installer:
https://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=76231795&postcount=23
All of my major and minor frustrations with EMUI have been resolved. All my apps work. All the hardware works (although I have to turn off the equalizer to get music to play through the headphones). The camera and video work great. Battery life is good. You can install without replacing the stock recovery, which is good because if you don't touch the stock recovery, it is pretty much always possible to unbrick your phone.
If you are eyeing a new phone or thinking about rolling back to Nougat because of your dissatisfaction with Oreo/EMUI 8 on the Mate 9, then I'd suggest trying OpenKirin. It worked for me.
Hi! Does the headphone jack work with 3rd party music players and video players like say VLC? I have a lot of music on my SD so will the app be able to read it? Also, compared to stock EMUI how would you rate battery life?
Thanks, looking forward to this.
Although, not willing to be a guinea pig at the moment. Hoping some others will try this out and give some feedback. Definitely, need a fully functioning camera, including video.
Works with VLC

VLC works with headphones -- I use VLC, though my main music player is Music Folder Player Full, which also works with headphones. (If you carry a lot of music organized into folders, check it out.) Neither app can see the SD card, so you would have to move music to the main storage with the Files program in order to access it with VLC. I carry about 10GB of music, so I copy all of it onto main storage. Again, to make the headphones work, I use Simple Tiny Equalizer to turn off the equalizer. You can do this in app, too.
I'm finding battery life about the same, possibly a bit worse. I used to end a day with about 30% remaining, and now I end it with 20%. Small sample. I might be using it more intensely, though, or EMUI's aggressive battery management that disables widgets and apps may have saved some battery.
As an aside, VLC can see my local network, like a Windows PC. I can play music and videos at home from my NAS. I didn't know Android could do this.

My willingness to be a guinea pig was very much influenced by (1) having a pretty great backup phone (ZTE Axon), which I set up first and used during the process and (2) the time I was spending looking at new phone announcements and reviews, gearing up to ditch my phone. But I like the Mate 9 -- fast, big battery, big screen, fantastic camera, headphone jack -- and I don't really want to start carrying a USB-C to 3.5mm dongle around. There was nothing wrong with the phone except EMUI 8.

The Mate 9 is the best phone I have owned so far and I am considering the Mate 10. I hate the pro version, don't like those long skinny screens.
EMUI 8 is okay (I don't access settings often and I don't have any issues using Nova Launcher), but I would like to get rid of some of the locked in software (Duo, Facebook App Manager, Email, Gboard, Google, Google Play Movies/Music, Hi Care, HiSuite, Huawei Home, Huawei Mobile, Music, Notepad - a lot can be disabled but why not just allow deletion?) and I would really like to use OpenGapps Pico. But I really need to access my ExtSd from PowerAmp and Moon+Reader, so that is the real deal breaker.
Are you able to use OpenGapps? Does the vanilla Oreo come with Google's bloatware too?

I'm with you on the long, skinny screens. I carry my phone in my shirt pocket most of the time, and it just barely has its center of gravity below the top edge of my pocket. Any taller and it will fall out even more frequently.
EMUI occasionally asked to replace Nova, and would crash if I added a EMUI widget to the homescreen. I hadn't realized how many apps couldn't be removed. For me, Facebook App manager is especially awful as I'm not on FB and FB track non-users, e.g. through the Like button on third party websites.
Not all the Gapps were embedded but some were. I think I had to add Gmail but Play, Google (search app), Chrome etc were present. It appears I can't uninstall the Google search app. (Of course, with the phone rooted, I can.) OpenKirin is not a vanilla AOSP in that way.
Did you try/can you try viper4android? ive been trying to get it working on emui8 and have had no luck.
really wanting to switch to aosp

The reviews are too negative, especially claiming popups, for me to try this. I'm not saying that the reviews are accurate as they often are not. But I've had to hard reset sometimes to remove a pernicious app, and this one isn't worth the risk. Sorry.
A cleaner version of android is more likely to run any app that didn't come from the phone manufacturer.

Ya, I remember having an issues with one or two widgets, but then I decided I didn't want all that stuff and just made three widgets using KWGT widget maker and I haven't had any issues since, except occasionally the music pause/start doesn't respond.
I was able to remove many apps, but those I listed, and most of those can be disabled. Still, would rather have a clean ROM.
Some of these app issues are Google changes. I used to use ROM Toolbox Pro to remove apps but Google made them remove the feature. I think Google is trying to force more apps like Chrome and Search on us. I don't use the Gmail app, instead I use AquaMail which is a superior interface and I have 7 email accounts that it manages.
Did you try installing OpenGapps? I did on the Huawei Oreo and it installs but then the phone boot loops. I used the pico version which has the bare minimum Gapps. Don't know if the issue is the way Huawei made the ROM or if this is a Google change.
Anyway, the biggest issue is the limited support for the external SD card. Maybe a future update will resolve that issue.
I'll definitely update when OldDroid does, at least fairly quickly, and report if the next version improves the SD card. I'm doing all right with it just as a source of backup files.
I found another advantage of OpenKirin. I didn't get google maps directions over bluetooth in car (an Audi) since updating to Oreo/EMUI 8. I'm not sure why. I tried deleting and re-adding the connection, which didn't fix it, and music and telephone calls played fine over bluetooth, so it wasn't the bluetooth connection. Now bluetooth directions work perfectly, as well as music and calls (which did before).
I took the plunge and flashed OpenKirin - it's decent, limited bloat, but I just can't live with the external SD card access problem. Hopefully, OpenKirin developers will work on it.

How's the performance? I tried Phh-Treble, RROS and Lineage OS, this last two are for the Honor View 10, all of them work, can read external SDCard but all of them have performance issues, when you are heavy using the phone, switching from app to app, copypasting things, taking photos, etc., the phones lost all kinds of smoothness that seems to have when you just flash it.

Sorry, I can't answer your question. I have too much on my external SD to live without it. 300 ebooks 2000 mp3s 400 videos several hundred images
Camera app can't see the storage
Root explorer can't see the storage
PowerAmp can
QuickPik can't
Moon+Reader cant
VLC can't
So after fiddling with it for a while I went back to MHA-L29 8.0.0.368
I haven't noticed any performance issues after about a week of uptime. I don't game, though, so may not stress the system like some do.

Yeah I know that bug, experienced it in Phh-Treble, hopefully is easy to fix and it was fixed on Phh-Treble, so it'll be soo fixed on this OpenKirik AOSP, what matters most to me is performance

I guess it deservers a try-
I finally took the dive and installed this on my primary device last night.
Ran into one issue: apparently, Huawei pulled the unlock request page offline. All of the available links to it that I could find went to a 404 page. (DC Unlocker to the rescue, I guess.)
In any case:
No issues with headphones. A few minor graphical glitches with the volume control panel and similar things but that's about it.
Magisk gets Google Pay and other SafetyNet demanding apps working, AdGuard doesn't mysteriously stop running because of overly aggressive memory management, dual SIM functionality seems fine.
45 minutes SOT, 92% remaining. No performance issues of note, aside from the minor graphical glitches feels smoother than EMUI did.
Update: I found something that gets rid of the graphical glitches, which (so far) seems to have a negligible effect on performance. Turn on GPU rendering profiling to be output to adb, all of the weird scrolling and clipping glitches go away...

I have a "Profile GPU rendering" under developer options, defaulted to Off, with two other options: On screen as bars, and "In adb shell dumpsys gfxinfo". Is the latter what you mean by output to adb, or am I missing something? I hadn't noticed glitches, other than occasionally missing half of the first line of text in some reading apps. With the in adb setting, I was unable to replicate that glitch, but it doesn't happen often, so could be unrelated.
When I choose "In adb shell dumpsys gfxinfo" and then restart, it returns to off.

The latter is what I meant. The glitches I keep seeing are:
1) The volume panel, when it's opening and closing, seems to lose it's edges. As soon as the animation is complete, of course, it returns to normal.
2) In Chrome, at least, when scrolling through a select box, the edges of it seem to stick (top and sides).
I've seen a few others, mostly in the same vein. It usually looks to be as though a scrollable view isn't clipped correctly by the underlying driver, and turning on profiling causes it to render strictly.
I'm not surprised that it turns itself off at reboot, I haven't rebooted this since I got everything installed on it.

I replicated 1) and that your fix works. I had noticed some scrolling artifacts in Firefox, but don't seem to be able to replicate them at the moment. But then, I notice scrolling artifacts on laptops, too. I'll leave it set to adb.
You're busy and don't have time to wait, which is why you need to stop reading this thread and get back to organizing your Pogs. Rate this thread to express how the Google Pixel 3 XL performs when multitasking. A higher rating indicates that the Google Pixel 3 XL keeps many apps in memory so that they don't need to reload, and that when moving between apps, transitions are smooth and performance is excellent.
Then, drop a comment if you have anything to add!
Does a poor job of memory management. Apps to be reloaded. I am quite surprised this is occurring.
Chrome pages rarely stay in memory even when jumping to one or two other apps for a short bit. Even the messaging app dumps out frequently. These are Google's own apps too, what's their excuse?
Slightly off topic but I love how safari on iOS devices keeps the last page stored so hitting the back button to the last webpage is instant vs chrome having to reload a page
Seems quite good to me. I loaded Spotify, messages, Viber, what's app, chrome and nest and no reloading. Seem to normally have about 750mb free
I haven't seen much reloading. I do mostly use apps that start each time I open them (like games like Clash Royale, etc), so I'm sure that has something to do with it, but for my most used normal apps I can open Gmail, Chrome, Instagram, YouTube, G+, and some others, and rarely will an app need to pause to reload. They mostly open right where I left off. Maybe if I cycle eight or so apps is when I see a pause/reload.
Seems great to me. I can swap between Discord/Camera/Snapseed/Twitter/YouTube music with no reloading. Taking pictures or videos doesn't pause or completely stop YouTube music like I've seen some YouTubers/reviews comment. I even bumped it up to about as stressful as I could - HDR on, highest mp, take raw, nothing I could do would get the music in the BG to close
I will experience redrawing when I open a game such as FGO or Dragalia Lost, but that shouldn't be shocking, in my opinion
I've tried both streaming apps and local playback of a downloaded podcast and have gotten process kills for every situation. How is it some people have no issue and others don't if it's just a software issue?
Only thing I've noticed is aggressively closing Pandora is I've been out of my car a few minutes. It's a little annoying but doesn't really bother me. Spotify and slacker stay open.
Other than that I haven't had the other issues reported like the camera closing Spotify etcetera
could this be related to the SWAP thats being used aggresively? if someone has root maybe they can test disabling swap, and changing the swappiness value should make things perform better.

I've found it to be due to Adaptive battery. Turn the adaptive battery setting for the app off.

How is SWAP adjusted with root?
Battery management seems to be the culprit. I have turned it off as it makes my phone almost unusable; it allows me to use two apps, MOST of the time, but it constantly closes everything else, even when I have told it NOT to optimize specific programs. This is a terrible user experience. TERRIBLE. I hope they make the program less aggressive with a future software update.
As an aside, this was not how things were with Oreo on the Pixel 2 XL, and things weren't this way with the first release of Pie on the XL 2, either. However, I started seeing this after an update to Pie on the XL 2, and it has been constant on the XL 3.

there should be a magisk module
'torpedo' something i think its called
you can also change swappiness to 0 (i think its in /proc/sys/vm )
if you have root you can try swapoff -a in terminal with su
report back on your finding please
RAM management is worse than phones from 2016
So I just got my pixel last week and one of the biggest issues is the RAM.
Sometimes I'll only have THREE things open, Chrome, Podcast Addict, and YouTube for isntance. And the pixel will kill off the podcast (while I'm listening to it still).
The same thing happens when I'm browsing the web, and want to take a picture, boom, kills the music I'm listening too.
It's a BIG issue, happens daily for me.

I did that last night - swap is off and, while I'm still getting reloads of Chrome tabs (really the only negative thing I noticed before), the phone *is* a bit more responsive. I've switched back and forth between swap and no swap, and there's definitely a non-placebo difference. I'd give it a shot if you're rooted (I used the Torpedo module in Magisk).

thats great news!
how many chrome tabs are you using? is it only in chrome tabs that the reloading happens? how about recent apps?
im sure there are a few settings in /proc/sys/vm that can be adjusted to get better ram management

I haven't kept track of *any* of that. The phone just feels a bit (hate this adjective) snappier. And from what I understand (don't have the links in front of me) adjusting the LMK settings is going to be difficult.
I keep getting low memory warnings while playing wgt golf. Sucks
is this issue too bad on pixel 3?
i use a pixel 1 xl now and wants to buy a new phone.
getting really concerned and thinking if i should just buy a note 9 or not.
what do you guys suggest?
