Please stay on topic - asking just about the phone capability please.
I have spent an hour searching the web and no thread indicates whether it is data only or also voice/phone capable.
I know that we can pull a phone application, but the question is if the modem is phone capable or not.
If you answer please link to your source, or share how you know.
I think for many if this is also a phone (and not just a VOIP sub-par option) it could go head to head with a Note2, with a reduced budget.
Thanks.
Even i am looking for this questions answer but not getting proper answer..Its not confirmed yet abt voice calls/sms
Add one more to the list of people who would like to know the answer to that question. I'd like to upgrade my Galaxy S, which is getting a bit long in the tooth, and I wouldn't mind to loose the back camera (I seldom use it anyway, plus I actually have a digital Point-and-shoot). Also, since I don't make that many calls, a small, cheap tablet makes total sense for me...
My guess is that, if the Nexus 7 with 3G is anything like the original Galaxy Tab (probably one of the original Android Tablets) on that department, then voice is a given. But you never know if the modem is crippled in any way...
Also, since we're on this topic, any news if the launch date is global, or only for the US? And if the 3G will be Europe-friendly, for that matter?
Miguel
I have used Line 2 on mine, so I don't see why it wouldn't work.
Interested in knowing too.
Interesting topic..i've plan to upgrade my n7 to n10 or n7 3g..

This is exactly what I would like to know. Is there hardware that needs to the N7 to make it 3g capable or will Google send and an update to current N7 owners?

As far as I know, currently shipping N7s completely lack any kind of 3G-capable hardware. It's simply not installed, period. And, since that hardware it's a tiny chip with even tinier contact points that needs to be soldered at manufacturing time (not to mention the rest of the supporting hardware, including the antenna, and already supposing the PCB actually has the required traces in place, which may or may not be the case), then ANY currently N7s being sold will never be 3G capable by themselves. Unless someone develops some kind of dongle to be added, though I don't even know if that's possible...
So, unless I'm terribly wrong, to get an N7 with 3G, you'll need a new one.
Now, one question that popped into my mind in the meanwhile. There was at least one review that took the N7 apart that found out the PCB for the N7 actually has a mounting area for a back camera, and probably all the PCB traces are in place, too. At the time, the reviewer said it could have been a leftover from the design phase, or something that had to be cut back due to the target cost. With these new SKUs popping up, do you think Google will eventually throw the back camera in at some point?
Miguel
i,ve asked google customer support several days ago on this same question but not yet get an answer. one thing i,m certain is that this all depends on the modem.that is, the modem may be data connection capable only, or may also be capable for making voice calls.

How did you manage to do that? I've been all over Google's support pages and have found nothing that even remotely looked like an e-mail address where we could ask for questions. Or a support form, for that matter...

My guess is, unless someone can get their hands on one of them before November 13th, we'll have to wait until at least then to get this question answered.
Also, a bit OT, but does anyone know launch dates for all countries? It would suck so much to have to cross the border just to get my hands on one... Right now, you can only get the 32GB Nexus 7 in Portugal (we completely skipped the 8GB and 16GB versions, they were never even available, though the good news is that we got the 32GB version along with the US), though only through retail (no Play Store for anything other than apps).

I can't remember very clearly . i just playing around at android.com looking for some customer support page, where i could ask questions via email since i am not at us. i finally made it at some page like 'my order'. i filled in some personal info, and managed to sent out my question to google. the 'order id' field was not required, but after that i was not able to find the page anymore. the support pages really sucks. just toooooo much links and i keep jumping everywhere and finally get lost,

If its no voice calls then i will not buy i guess, better i will buy galaxy tab 2 but NoT sure but on gsmarena.com they mentioned that ONLY DATA,NO VOICE CALLS on uppar side of specs.
I have been trying to find the answer to this question as well without any luck. Would be nice to get this confirmed or denied in a official way but i guess we wont know untill nov 13th

here the response from google customer support: The Nexus 7 3G version currently does not have a built-in phone app, so it will not be capable of making any phone calls. It has 3G data connectivity and Wifi as of now and currently may be used with any carrier that supports GSM/UMTS/HSPA+.

Still can't find anything besides a "send feedback" link over at Android.com. I think you were extremely lucky
Anyway, that reply might be a good thing after all: we all know the phone app is disabled for the N7, it has been said before. However, as someone also already mentioned, it's usually possible for people to enable that app, even if you need a custom ROM for it. So, assuming the whole "does not have a built-in phone app" thing only means "we didn't enable voice capabilities because, frankly, it would cannibalize our other offerings, but the underlying hardware is perfectly capable of doing that" (not that you would actually hear anyone from Google saying that, or have them write that down... lol), we'll be golden.
Is any way you can reply to that e-mail and specifically ask which is the baseband/chipset they will be using for the data capabilities? If we had that tidbit of information, we should be able to know if voice could be unlocked or not...
What a way to start my day, with a hopeful news... Nice!

i reply the customer support's email with another question but they didn't give me the direct answer!
my qusetion was:
"thanks for your kindly help. would you tell we if the hardware modem itself supports voice calls? as you know,in android,a 3rd party phone app could take the work of the built-in phone app. so lack of built-in phone app really doesn't matter much. eager for your reply and thanks again!"
their response:
" The N7 3G version can be used for Voice over IP calls, such as Skype, or Google Voice, etc but you will not be able to use the tablet as a phone. Hope that helps."

Technically No...
It doesn't answer whether or not the modem(radio) inside the device has been limited (hardware wise) to only a Data connection.
The N7 runs the tablet version of Android, which means the Phone Feature (dialer, etc) has been removed.
The phone dialer you see on some tablets, are custom to that manufacturer, not added by Google.
What we need to know is if the Hardware part of the N7 will allow for a Voice connection to be made. If so, then the Software part can be added back in. Which I'm sure if the hardware needed is there, then the many geniuses here on XDA will quickly make the Dialer appear
And I might be completely mistaken here, but SMS should be possible since its Technically Data, and only requires a Phone Number to route the messages. If SMS is possible, I would be happy with just that, as I do not use voice (if I needed to, I have a cell for that, which I pay an extreme amount for, but only make on average 2 calls a month) - But this would also require the SMS app be added back into the N7 firmware.

I think it all come down to Waiting... Waiting for the device to be release, and someone taking it apart to see what its capable of.
Since Google employees people in their service department that are not completely "Tech" savvy, I don't think we can take any answer they give as fact.
I called them the other day, and asked about the Modem/Radio within the Nexus 7 3G.. and The CSR answer was "No you can not plug a Phone Cord or Ethernet cable into the device, and if you want to listen to the radio you must download a 3rd Party App or Try our Google Music service, but it's not a radio" - Couldn't help but laugh uncontrollably for 10min straight.
Greetings everyone,
As the majority of you, like myself, are still plagued by the embarrassing issue of multiple duplicate outgoing texts while running on the Sprint network. From the research I'm sure we've all done, these are probably some of the solutions you've heard:
1) Android 5.1 OTA update fixes the issue
- Most of us have learned that this is not true as we're still experiencing it after
2) Turn off LTE, no dupes sent on 3G network
- Lets be real, this is not a solution. You pay a premium for LTE service, and text messages come in randomly throughout the day. This is fine for emergencies, or as a very short-term fix (few days max)
3)Changing APN Settings
- Not sure if activating under Sprint, or the 5.1 Update caused this, but there is NO option to change APN settings from within the systems menu.... anywhere! There is an APN Settings menu in the Data Programming menu of the phone (getting to by *#*#3282#*#*), but it doesn't look like its the access point names for messaging. Not sure how it works.
3rd party SMS app
- Didn't work for me, as well as most people complaining in the forums. Sorry, but no dice.
NEW WORKAROUND
Who am I kidding? Its not actually "new", I just have not seen the workaround I'm mentioning below in any forums yet, but it is an option thats available to all Sprint customers:
Sprint Google Voice Integration
I've been using this integration since it first came out, and its awesome. It provides me a data redundancy for SMS and phone calls, which is great. I've been calling over Wifi since before the term Wifi-calling was coined. Ever been stuck in a place that has 0 cell reception of any kind, but does have Wifi? Boom, Google Voice has you covered.
Heres the problem: the Google Voice app itself sucks. Its not that its buggy, its just ugly and doesn't really offer much in terms of features. Also, it doesn't support MMS.
Theres also gonna be some smart guy that says "use Google Voice in Hangouts to support MMS". Calm down sir, Sprint GV Integration users cannot use it in Hangouts - coincidentally it causes its own variety of dupe text issues.
The Silver Lining - I've tested this thoroughly using GV in a web browser, and the app from my phone. NO DUPES! Thats splendid. Answer we've been looking for.... sort of.
PS - Small update
I've been reading some mixed reviews of the Google Voice/Hangouts Integration for Sprint Integration users, and some people are mentioning that it has been fixed. I haven't found anything formal from Google on that fact, and it actually still says on their website that we should not have this enabled in Hangouts. But I'm going to give it a whirl for about a week and report back. Hopefully its fixed and they just forgot to tell us.... wouldn't be the first time lol.
I hope this isn't an issue when running Sprint's network on Fi.
I'm not having any of these issues.

Well there are many variables to consider here, and its difficult to determine which factors cause the issues for some but not others. These variables could be specific to certain cell towers, the band you're connected to at the time of sending the message, the origination of the phone itself (whether its from another carrier and unlocked to work on Sprint), etc. And unfortunately we don't really have enough data from every person reporting these issues to find a common denominator, and I don't have the time to reach out to each reporter and compile it myself lol.

I had the same issue, tried every single SMS app, did a full wipe. No difference. Will be sending the phone back if I can't figure it out soon. I though it may have been an issue with Verizon not recognizing the phone. Will try to edit the build prop
Moto x 2014 on Verizon had the same problem. Thread died out so maybe they found a solution

I know this doesn't help, but I have no problem with MMS on At&t. I use YAATA as my MMS app.
Just wanted to add - Im on VZW as well, same low res images, I've only tried Google Messenger so far, and I agree would be a deal breaker for me.
This used to happen on other Phones if I used CM12.1, as it was a known bug, and I couldn't handle using CM becuase of it.
its verizon reducing the quality of the image in order to reduce its data footprint. Very doubtful its a problem just with the moto x

The quality of MMS on my Nexus 6 isn't that great a lot of the time. How much worse is this? Are the pictures unusable?
you know, at first I was just somewhat annoyed by this, but after getting some over the last two days, it may be a deal breaker. The pictures are over saturated and grainy, and generally look like s#*t. If this is just " how it is", coupled with the other Verizon issues (no HD calling, no video chat) I may have to take a pass...

FYI - I think HD Calling works fine? - "enhanced 4g LTE mode" is on for me, you may have to call vzw to get it to work (I had to with Nexus 6), b/c it won't be turned on unless they mark you with a phone that they know is compatible. (also have to add it to your account, although its free).
But I agree, the photo quality is so low that you can't use them for anything, blurry photos.
The photo's are coming through at between 10-20kb, completely unusable.

Is this something I can enable on my account page on myvzw?
Also the mms image quality is at an all time low. Any way to edit build.prop for better mms?
Edit: Sending mms isn't a problem. Sent mms to wife and her galaxy s6 received the image at around 720kb.
Sent me an mms and it comes in at 17kb.
I am rooted. So, if their is a root method to fixing this, that would be great.

When I tried to enable online it said I had to call in, so I did and was fine.
Yes I agree - I found a discussion for HTC phones where someone was manually editing mms.apk to allow for higher total, I didn't see anywhere on how to actually do it, or am I technical enough to do it.
Currently using MXP rooted on Textra and have not had an issue with mms. Granted my mom's phone is a POS but they're coming in at ~110-170 kbs
Also using Textra and get pics at 100-200 in size. Perhaps it's the default messaging app?

The pixel seems like I good phone but I'm a little apprehensive about the new assistant app. I'm sure it will arrive on all phones eventually. I really don't want google to always know where I am, how long i was there, where I'm eating, if I'm moving around, what I'm buying, watching on tv, and searching for. Full access to my texts, emails, and friends. Best case scenario is they use/sell all my life's info to a marketing company. They should call the app Snowden assistant. they new everything that was on and how many pictures were on phone and the list goes on .they same said 1st issue you have developers on which is bad second that wifi was on and needed to be off for more diagnostic. so any way don't be too worried of google as tmobile also knows what's on your phone
This is why I personally feel root should be option on all devices. Are we to trust all the hands in our private cookie jars? I personally feel more secure with my control of my device than with large companies that are constant targets of hackers. I'm glad we have more control over what apps can access in android 6 and and 7, but still no real control what the carriers and their friends can access about our lives and what they do that info. It will be interesting to see if people end up caring enough about their privacy or maybe I'm just being too sensitive about it.

Indeed. I have the unlocked S7 Edge .. no carrier or Samsung bloat installed. This Big Bro crap is just that .. crap. They also load up a diag process as part of the MyTmobile app. You don't opt out of their network testing and disable that process .. it will eat your network connection and system resources. It hit my Note 7 and made it unusable for 40 minutes. I noticed the data arrows going mad and figured this was the problem. It was. I disabled all the TMO software and this separate process and everything was good .. then recall. Not a good month all the way around.

And once the Pixel folks have worked out the kinks by beta testing it .. it'll get pushed out to everyone.
Anyone who thinks the Pixel will sell enough to make it work Google doing it as an exclusive feature is just nuts. Also, the folks who created Siri just got bought by Samsung so most likely by summer '17 we'll all be saying "Hey, Viv!" and all that silliness.

What's irritating me, and I don't know if anyone else has noticed, but ever since Google stated only the Pixel would have this feature, Google Now has been crippled on Samsung phones.
