I'm getting a 500gb SSD to replace (adapt) my 16gb internal storage. It's my understanding that the Shield encrypts the drive and so it can't be accessed otherwise. Meaning you pretty much just leave it hooked to the Shield all of the time. But what about trim and leveling?
Also I presume since it's USB-3 that performance isn't an issue and even a cheap ssd will work fine. Planning on using Adata su-800 but does it matter to have dram for example?
And for the second external drive I use just for media, does anyone know how much power the usb outlets put out? Am thinking about getting a 2.5" 5tb (mechanical & almost entirely for videos) and wondering if the usb power is enough to handle these type of drives. I think these drives require the better part of one amp to operate properly. Also can this second drive be removed safely without shutting down the Shield?
As-long as the second drive is not adopted it should be fine and dandy, just ensure that you eject it from the storage menu. I'll let someone else who knows more about adopted storage and USB power chime in for the rest

I am reading up about optimizing of SSD drives and I'm seeing that Windows 8 is supposed to be pretty good with automatically deciding whether to optimize or defragment drives based on what they are (SSD vs HDD). But I have a problem. I just bought an SSD but under the Optimization menu it is showing up as a Hard Drive.
It's a brand new Samsung 840 EVO 500GB and I'm going to be using it solely for music and movies as an external drive. I also bought an Anker external SATA III to USB 3.0 enclosure. I have the drive recognized and everything under the File Explorer but I'm just a little nervous that it's listed as a Hard Drive under the Optimization menu. How can I get Windows to see that it's in fact an SSD?
Hmm. Leaving aside the fact that "solely for music and movies" is an absurdly pointless waste of an SSD (those are large, contiguous, non-latency-sensitive, moderate-to-low bandwidth files; in other words they are everything that a traditional magnetic disk is good at and an SSD is not) I would guess that the issue lies in the SATA3-USB3 conversion. If there's any drivers available for that enclosure specifically, you could try installing them (though they really ought to have installed automatically). Beyond that... does Windows even schedule automatic "optimization" of removable drives (presumably it *does* see your drive as removable)?
If I were looking for a portable media drive, I'd frankly just return that one and use the money to buy a traditional 2.5" HDD with 2-4x the storage capacity. There's literally not a single reason I can think of to use an SSD there unless you plan on dropping the drive a lot while it's in use (modern laptop drives will lock their heads if they sense a sudden drop, so even there the SSD has only a small advantage). Magnetic storage will give you much better capacity and probably last longer, too.
I got the SSD on a really good sale and I'm definitely not returning it, the price I paid for it was absolutely bonkers and I'd be foolish to return it. The software that came with the SSD for some reason won't install and the Samsung software won't recognize the SSD. Windows saw it right away as a portable media drive and I went into disk management, created an MBR volume and formatted it under NTFS. This was the only solution because many other users of this SSD have had the same problems as me - it straight up won't be recognized by the software, presumably probably because of the USB 3 connection. That's ok though because the software is optional. This was suggested as a solution and it works perfectly, now I'm just worried about the drive being falsely defragmented by Windows.
Ah. Well, you could try installing the software using Compatibility Mode (maybe try Win7 first?) but it sounds like, whether or not the drive is in fact a great deal, it has lousy firmware. Unless you can flash an update to it that fixes the problem, your best bet would simply be to try making sure Windows never attempts to "optimize" the drive.
Of course, unless you remove or edit the files on there, there won't be any fragmentation anyhow. So attempting defrag probably wouldn't do anything in any case. Similarly, if you aren't deleting files then you don't need to TRIM their data, so the usual optimizations for SSDs don't matter much either. You might want to see if you can disable access-time updating for the drive though, as that's very wasteful on an SSD (you can globally disable access timestamps using fsutil, but I don't know if you can do so for a single drive on Windows).

I found a tool that formats any drive larger than 32gb to fat32.
With it I formatted a 1TB hdd in an external, self powered enclosure and connected it to the tablet.
Holy crap it worked like a charm

Nice find......that really opens up the possibilities.....with a hard drive that stores the stuff on my mac....I can actually use the pro as my main device. I have a 500GB laying on the shelf to play with.

You can do this from diskpart too (built in Windows tool). Use the FS=FAT32 option.

I seem to remember some of the later Samsung devices have exFAT support. It does not have the max 4GB size per file limitation associated with FAT32.

Can you give some more details. I want to connect a powered 3.0 hub to my 12.2 with an osg to 3.0 usb adapter so that I can use an external (non powered) hdd. I'd also like to try an external dvd drive.

I used an OTG cable and plugged in my 500 MB external to it, no problem, no formatting. Do some need to be formatted to work?

I verified an old 320GB FAT32 2.5" external USB 2.0 drive works.
However, a new 2TB FAT32 2.5" external USB 3.0 drive does not work. It crashes the phone hard to a self-inflicted reboot every time it starts to mount it.
Both drives "mount" OK to a WinXP system. Both drives have enough extra power through a Y-cable and/or powered USB hub when connected to the phone, so power is not the problem. Both drives were partitioned and formatted to FAT32 using GParted (on Parted Magic boot CD).
Update on power: Newer 2.5" external drives don't need additional power using Y-cable or powered hub.
Any info would be appreciated.
Here I go again, replying to my own queries on XDA Developer.
The phone will happily mount the 2 TB drive formatted to exFAT. And no external power needed either - the phone has enough power to run it with just an OTG cable.
The first attempt using GParted to partition and format the drive to exFAT did not work to get the phone to mount it. Not sure why.
However, using Windows XP command (DOS -like) shell to format it to exFAT worked, with the /FS:exFAT and /Q parameters. Had to install the WinXP patch to add exFAT support too.
Now, time to fill this sucker up.

Streaming is OK for convenience, but quality is only so-so, and sometimes there is no available network connection sufficient to stream.
This phone has outstanding audio quality (with Audio Effects OFF), it really comes out with lossless audio like FLAC. High quality video and lossless audio files take a lot of storage. 50-something GB on phone plus 128 GB mSD card are not enough by themselves for the amount of media I have. A 2 TB drive to carry along for USB OTG provides a workaround, I can put my ENTIRE audio and video library on it and it will always be available in lossless quality wherever I am.
I wouldn't run the OTG drive to listen/watch directly, that uses too much power. Use it to copy on to phone them unmount.
So I just ordered my shield, remote, and micro sd. I'm really curious as to if I made a good combination of hardware. I picked up the 16gb version, nvidia remote, and the new fastest sandisk Mico sd. Here's my questions.
-I got the brand new sandisk uhs-ii u3 micro sd, I know the bus speed for micro SD on the shield is only rated uhs-1. Can I format it as adoptable storage using the USB 3.0 adapter so I can get the high speed the card is rated for or will I have to use the micro SD slot for adoptable storage and have my card speed throttled to the slower r/w bus speed. If this is the case should I have opted for a uhs-1 card for half the price
-I also have a USB 3.0 4TB external hard drive full of movies that I currently plug into my LG TV. It is formatted NTFS, will I be able to plug it into my shield and use it as my new media player since the one on my TV is kinda clunky. Can I read and write to NTFS on my shield?

Can anyone help with some of these questions? I canceled the 16gb version and opted for the pro. I also canceled the sandisk micro sd. Can I use my Samsung ssd in usb 3.0 enclosure as adoptable storage? Would I benefit any from it as far as load times on games or should I just install to internal 500gb drive? What are the advantages of a custom rom over rooted stock rom. With stock rooted rom can I install all the same apps from Google play or will I have more options with a custom rom? Also I see custom roms of full android 6.0 without nvidia skin overlay. Are there any real benefits this and will I lose any functionality? Any help is appreciated, responses please! I get my shield Tuesday.

Yeah ended up swapping for 16gb again and gonna use my Samsung ssd adopted. Found the answers to most questions just trying to decide rather to flash full android m or just root factory firmware.
Why not the 500gb with adoptable though. Isn't it a hybrid drive or just a regular 5400rpm hdd

I think the drive is a Hybrid. Pretty good chance that NVIDIA just used a USB 3.0 to SATA chip to service that 500gb drive. So I see no reason why you couldn't have just done it yourself.
How do you know the device did not come with the remote already? I purchased the 16gb and decided I did not want the remote so I didn't buy it, yet surprisingly it was in the retail box anyway.
As far as I know it's just the shield and the controller in the box according to the Amazon description and pictures. They do sell a bundle that has the remote included but I'm pretty confident mine has no remote. You cannot add, change, or remove storage internally on the shield nvidia made sure of that.

It all comes down to what you want to use the Shield for. If your installed games are not going to exceed those 16GB of flash (which of course will be less) I see no reason to get the Pro. Another valid point is the price difference: for the 100€ difference, I could get a 2-4 TB HDD.

Gotcha I plan on it, I have a 256gb ssd in enclosure I want to use as adopted storage and a 4tb wd external for media storage
Personally speaking, for my family anyway I just add drives to the home server, or retire them for bigger ones. Building a Windows home server 5 years ago was the best thing I ever did for media consumption. Sadly I only have 3 SATA ports so I am limited to the amount of drives I can add

One thing I forgot to mention: adding USB devices through a USB port will limit the speed and latency at which they are accessed.
OK how would you guys setup this is what I now have ordered and has already shipped so no going back. Idc if I use adoptable storage or not unless it benefits me. My usage will be downloading large torrent files and copying them to 4tb drive using shield as player, lots of large file gaming, kodi, Internet browsing and that's about it. Maybe hangouts

I wouldn't worry about adaptable storage. keep your external drives mounted as removable storage and have your apps and games all installed on your internal drive, keep the external drives just for media. I can't see you filling up 500gb with android apps and games any time soon.

Edit: I think I've got it figured out just gonna root stock rom and sideload whatever I can't get directly through playstore.
I have a WD 4tb my passport external hard drive that has been giving problems with the shield tv ever since i bought. I bought it specifically for the shield as an internal storage device. ill format it as internal storage, a few days later, it cant recognize the HDD. when I go on kodi it says "waiting for external storage". it happens all the time. I thought if i power down the shield instead of sleep mode it would fix it, nope problems still there. can anyone help me. i dont want to buy a desktop external hdd because im not going to have use for this hdd after i paid for it already.
Any particular reason as to why you want to format it to be Internal?
Dont know what you're using to plug it in but try with another enclosure, cable and if using a usb hub in between then try pluging the hdd directly to the shield TV and make sure it receive the proper power to work. I've also read that the Shield tv has some issues handling with more than one partition in external hdd's.
4TB should work but google search for users that report success with 4tb+ HDD, I've seen up to 3tb around.
If still you can't make it work stable then contact nvidia support and create a thread at geforce forum.

Hrm funny enough, my Nvidia Shield TV has killed 2 external hard drives now in this exact same situation... Both older mechanical hdds... I'm running a sector by sector scan on the most recent drive now...
I had the same problem, until finally my data got corrupted. I suspect the Shield didn't have the ability to consistently power the drive and other usb devices. Even using a powered hub.
I've since switched to a WD desktop external drive with its own AC adapter. I haven't had any issues in the month since I've done so.
In my case, I needed to format as internal storage to run a Plex DVR. It won't work as external storage.
