Deprecated Functions from Android 9 - Android Software Development

It seems with each ascending API level, app devs have less system functionality to work with. As a user, I was wondering what functionality will existing Apps targeting Android OS 9 lose if I upgrade to 10?
I'm concerned about things like Scoped Storage that prevent me from sharing files with other apps.
So what should I get worried about in deciding to upgrade, WRT app functions not working anymore?

Hehe. Deprecated. Although I like your word, we have to find a meaning for it.

Oh, it already has one: Decrepitation is the noise produced when certain chemical compounds are heated, or it refers to the cracking, or breaking-up of lumps of limestone during heating. Such compounds include lead nitrate and calcine.

Release Preview vs Consumer Preview?

Hello forum.
I was just wondering what is the main difference between the new Release preview and consumer preview? Is it like a better version of windows 8?
Thanks
to be blunt the whole thing is a lot more polished
The apps work a lot better, the graphics are better
So far stability is better. I don't have a multi monitor setup on this PC just now but apparently that's been improved
Metro looks a lot more usable, the tiles are a much more sensible size.
is it worth the upgrade over the CP?
without a doubt, Music, email (exchange works again), messaging, people, hubs all working sweet. I still don't like the people hub compared to Windows phone, but its a big improvement over CP
I think they did alot of work on drivers too, im not having anymore of the many driver issues i had at first, just finger scanner. The stability is great, and its faster.

Window 8 Release Preview
Yeah pretty much, more performance improvments and lots of laptop mouse gestures.
Release is having some issues with chrome which are ruining the OS, I dunno what to do

What issues? I use Chrome with Windows Release Preview and it works fine.
Just saying Release is having some issues with chrome doesn't tell us what the problem is, we need more information to help you with it.
EDIT: Sorry, I just saw your thread and I have replied to it. Unfortunately, I'm not sure what your problem is as Chrome and Flash both work fine on my netbook running the same OS.

why upgrade to windows 8?

I am really fail to find any reason to use windows 8 in any form .
i use now windows 7 x64 and i really fail to see how windows 8 is better other then that ugly stupid Metro thing good only in tablets.
some minor fixes and changes but i won't do a clean install just for that.
So please light me why Microsoft even made it?

First off its no % faster its X faster ie text rendering is like 10X faster etc.
The new start screen is far more productive.
You can use 16bit installers on 64bit os
better hardware support
way more secure
more stable
better power management uses fraction of the battery
built in hardware acceleration across the whole OS
better graphics handling
cleaner os that gets less clutter by design
You can save your entire system to a usb stick for working remote sites
better memory management
faster booting programs - crisis was half the time, auto cad was 1/4
boots faster including instant boot - with the correct hardware
wakes from sleep almost instantly (less then a second on an old Centrino laptop)
SSD support is far better - faster
AND YOU DONT NEED TO USE METRO APPS!!! If you don't like Metro don't use it! If you want to give up on vastly better faster more secure more stable system because you prefer to search a list instead of looking at a grid of tiles then so be it. And all that for a few quid as well, I don't get this hate i really don't please someone actually explain it to me! Why is it such a bad thing? Surely its only a cosmetic thing as other then that its much much better for a pile of reasons i have listed in other threads and at worst its on par. Surely you love of a list to sacrifice progression is just odd and you cant then argue its about productivity as for a ton of reasons win 8 smashes any other version out the park on that.
I would never pay full retail for it but for $40... this is a major upgrade to the OS in terms of stability and performance. Also, you don't necessarily need a clean install (i hope for microsoft's sake).
-Copy and delete jobs can now be paused. Yeah. You'll be missing out on a feature that simple if you don't upgrade.
-Multiple copy/delete jobs now take up a single window. No longer will multiple copy/delete jobs clog the task bar with multiple instances.
-Realtime, background backups with multiple states (So you can access every single version of a file there ever was on your computer)
-Backup to network hard-drives
-The $40 upgrade will net you Windows 8 Pro, even if you only have Windows 7 Home Premium. That means you'll get all the extra stuff like encryption and a maximum 192GB of RAM, rather than 16GB.
-Integrated social networks/mail/calendar/etc
-Cloud synchronisation of OS settings
-Simple and clean recovery options
-File copy jobs are now like 2+ times faster
-Faster in all aspects. Less CPU usage, less RAM usage, faster file management.
-Absolutely no intrusion from Windows Update. Ever. No pop ups or anything.
The boot times truly are astonishing. My Windows 8 Release Preview notebook with 7200rpm hard drive boots faster than my Windows 7 with SSD, even though the notebook's installation is older and the hard drive is more full.
Every boot, unless you restart due to an update, is sort of a hybrid between hibernation and full shutdown. Drivers and system files in a loaded state are saved to the disk, and immediately transferred into the RAM at boot.
UI navigation is faster than Windows 7, too. I only used the start menu to search. I never actually used All Programs because it was too slow and small to navigate, and got clogged with readmes and other stuff.

I avoided the all programs because it took way too many clicks to get anywhere. But on Windows 8 its just a "click" or two of the scroll wheel and you're there (depending on how you arrange your start screen).
Though what bugs me the most is that when you install a program it pins so many shortcuts to the start screen (probably devs have to fix it themselves). For example I installed solidworks last week and it put 15-20 icons on there for all of its settings and edrawings crap.
SSD faster??

Please explain your comment instead of just putting up FUD! How in any way is Windows 8 a downgrade from 7? We are open to talks both ways but your comment is just inflammatory negative and plain wrong without any valid argument or point!
I would really love to hear your views on WHY it is a downgrade please share. I have yet to find anyone who can say why other then "I don't like the way it looks". You seem to be very direct with your point so you must have reasons! come on share them or are you just a troll?

Yes,
though running vortex in raid 0 is risky they have a fairly high fail rate and yes you get some speed bens of 0 with SSD its not anything like the diff in hhd running it.

fear, uncertainty and doubt was not spread by me. also, there was no inflammation involved.
also, when you use "we" instead of "I", you infer a representation of more than one person. I commented to the op, very specifically, and am only speaking for myself. are you speaking for a group?
read the op's original post. he doesn't like w8, doesn't care for the UI, doesn't like the features that are new. very simply, he doesn't need to downgrade to something he's not interested in, and will receive little to no benefit from.

We if ref the community as a whole, generally if you go to forums its because you wish to share knowledge and/or talk about the pro and cons of each topic. Clearly your not involved in this collective as you fall into the closed minded I need to spread hate category that plague us.
Second of all you have not put any constructive point still. Yes the OP stated a dislike for the UI but asked past that is there a reason to upgrade so you listing the original concern is not putting forward anything.
Yes there is no need but then there is no NEED to leave XP for a couple years yet but does that mean if I like the look of XP its a downgrade to go to 7 or 8? personally I think the best looking phone is the nokia 8850 does that mean that im on a downgraded phone now I use my Lumia 800 or my One X?
There has been plenty of reasons put forward as to why its a good upgrade look above ie faster, more secure, better hardware support, better graphics support, faster browsing, better power consumption etc etc but I guess there all downgrades to after all who wants to be secure and fast when you can have something older and slower because you don't like the "look" of something you use about 1% of the time.
Also no the fear isn't spread by you its spread by the closed minded, the commenters that look at vids instead of using, reporters paid by Apple a fear of the unknown an unwillingness to change and more then anything else a game dev who stands to lose out after MS offer something better then his silly games store that runs better on 8 then 7.

It is nothing to do with positive or negative input! Its about that input having substance or meaning and pref with facts or evidence to back it up. To say something is a downgrade when someone is asking for advice from people that have insight when you have nothing to back that up is not only negative and derogatory its also of no help. If you have a valid reason why then by all means share it but as I said, only someone who has not even used Windows 8 for any amount of time would think that the new interface is anything more than a slight change to people that don't want to install metro apps.

again, the op said he didtn like it.
is it not fairly easy to understand that using something you like less , is a downgrade?
no matter how much paint you put on a pig, its still a pig.
now, hold her horses, this is -not- a comparison to w8. this simply means , no matter how much you point out how great something is, if someone doesn't like pig.... they just don't like pig!

I use my pc purely for gaming and Web browsing. I use my mbp for everything else as I prefer osx for productivity. Those things listed don't seem to help much for Gaming. I have ssd sata3, will speeds improve? Also ultimate 7 already allows me to back up to a network hdd. I haven't read much good about gaming.. Gabe Newell didn't seem to like what win8 had to offer. so i read this thread yesterday b/c i was thinking of upgrading to W8... just installed it, and aside from something going wrong and me having to do a clean install halfway through installation which means i lost all my existing files, this thing is AWESOME!!! takes a moment to get used to... but having the option to use the normal look is good to have on there!! now time to install all my programs again lol

Mail app is trash for gmail (kind of like hotmail and yahoo for android - they suck). Same with people and messenger for facebook. It's better to use the desktop sites for these. Calendar is nice for viewing google calendar, it puts reminders on your lock screen and live tiles. Though if you want to change anything I would suggest using the website again.
thanks... i guess what i was referring to was the whole integration part... pictures, mail, im, etc... but i guess its not that big of a deal really... chrome installed fine and i just use that anyways... still some getting used to... but it's nice and i love the smoothness and speed of this!

Gaming and web browsing see a big improvement. That said I would wait till you get the final build drivers out for your graphics card as with any new system.
Games boot times and load times are massively improved, cutting some load times in half already (will get faster as drivers and updates come). Not only that most comparisons also see a reasonable diff in fps and that is on beta graphics drivers. On top of that you get some cool features like cross platform live integration and xp points. You get live chat without needing some clunky background software eating your resources. Also if you set up the backup features right if say you accidently over save a game you can roll back to any date the save file (there was a really good write up on how this is useful http://www.pcpro.co.uk/blogs/2012/08/03/how-windows-8-file-history-saved-my-career/ ). Don't listen to Gabe he is just kicking off because he sees the MS store as competition to his own and so is trying to manipulate the market into running an OS that again forces users into his store, nothing more than that!
Also browsing is improved though not as much as I would of like but even a small improvement is better than non. most notably is that test is now rendered with hardware acceleration as well as everything else. You deffo wont see a decrease here and its worth a note that its much more secure esp in metro browser (but then you lose plugin support but will ask if you want to flip to desktop so you don't lose anything really as it will just flip when you ask it to).

Slow motion on the S5

Hello,
Im trying to decide what device will be my next phone and i have been strongly considering the s5 but there is something that i would like to have on my next phone and that is the ability to do slow motion, but i only in a portion of the clip and i can't find a definitive answer as to whether the s5 does that or not.
I know it can record in slow motion, 120fps, but can i then edit and select a portion to be in slow motion and other at regular speed (like on htc one and on the z2)?
If not from stock, is there an alternative app or mod that allows me to do that?
It might not seem like a big deal, but it was a feature i would like to have on the camera because i have had some moments where i it would have been nice to have that feature.
Thank you!

The camera on the Z series isn't bad but i've found that the s5 is superior, once rooted on the z series you will lose the bionz engine, not to mention that when you zoom in the pictures are incredibly grainy, i would stay stick with the s5, it's a beast of a phone and the 120fps shooting works just as good as the z does. There is an editor on the handset already and there are tonnes of them you can get for windows and android.

I didnt know that root on the z2 made it lose functions. Thats a shame :/
The camera on the s5 does seem impressive, not as much in low light but still. But the editor on s5 you mention, do you know if it will allow to speed up some parts of the vídeo and leave others in slow mo?

Well not rooting but unlocking the bootloader, apologies. One of the easiest devices to root though, unlocking the bootloader will only allow you to install custom recoveries, personally I wouldn't bother, retain your warranty and you're only an FTF flash away from complete stock, no harm done.
Even after unlocking the bootloader the camera is still decent, there is a drop in clarity but it's not a deal breaker, but either with or without losing features, the S5 is still superior imho.
I'm just downloading the editor from samsung apps to check for you, but i'm guessing that you can.

A huge thank you! I don't have access to a s5 and the info on that is not very specific, it would be great if it was possible to even just record slow speed and then speed it up(its the other way around on other devices, but it ends up being the same).
I wasn't aware of that about the z2, but yeah, aside from some functions on the z2 from what i have seen, the s5 seems to be better and its one of major points for the s5 for me.
No problem mate, but i'm afraid it doesn't, not with the stock editor, but there are others which you could use which will do the same, not sure which ones but there are quite a few, i'm almost certain that this can be done on windows.

On windows, software like after effects or maybe even other free video editors can probably do it. I have to try it.
I would rather have it on the phone though =/ Its a shame that samsung didn't follow the trend from other manufactures for handling slow motion.
If i end up finding an app that does that on android, i will let you know also!

Those seem to do what i want Especially the first one, i need to try it.
Hopefully my s5 will arrive tomorrow and i will test it out
You recorded regular video on samsung camera and then slowed it down on the app? Since samsung processes the video to slow it down, can it be used on the app and then increase or decrease the speed? I also want to try record with smooth motion(60fps) and then slow it down to see what it looks like, probably not as good as 120fps but it might be enough to do what i want.

Opinions On the Amazon Fire (5th gen)

I picked mine up last week for the $35 Black Friday sale and it is the best 7-inch (although it isn't exactly that large) tablet I have ever owned in my opinion.
I would think the same thing if I could just get music apps to work on it
At $35 I think it's fracking fabulous!
I got a 2nd one that I might give to an older friend of my family. Just set up as little more than a media player (movies, tv shows, music loaded onto the sd card). Using SlimLP or CM & set up to be as easy to use as possible. At $35, why not?
A 3rd one for a friends child (moderated use / screen time).
And I almost feel like I should have got yet another one. Just to keep on hand in case I think of someone I'd like to give it to. If it had built-in gps I probably would have got one to set up & give as a car gps. You can grab gps off a phone over BT but it's just not as nice as built-in.

Are you on the stock amazon OS, SlimLP or CM12.1? What music apps aren't working for you?
Its better than the original Fire, which I have owned for a few years & had it on LP before it died. The experience here has improved noticeably, especially when installing apps in the background or using PDFs (both would really lag the OG KF).
General performance for reading is excellent, I open PDFs mostly that are ~20-50pgs usually and I can read them lag-free. The Kindle app seems alright too, didn't have issues with storing books, so will move onto comics/manga at some point.
Screen? Looks acceptable to me, but the min brightness is too bright for me. It's much brighter than other LCD/IPS based devices I've used.
Overall the experience so far has been better than with my Encore Mini, which randomly stopped charging not long after the return window.

Haven't tried any streaming yet but just tried an mp3 on VLC, no problem with screen off. I'm on the most recent slimLP.

Ok, tried pandora . . . no problem at all. Tried screen off via power button, auto timeout & double tab status bar to sleep.
Your Fire just don't like you! Or you could try the latest slimLP.

I am on slimLP, have you tried keeping it for at least 30 minutes with screen off? It usually crashes mine within 15 minutes.
For$35 this thing is great! Thanks to the devs we can install Google play and basically make this a normal Android tablet and hide all the Amazon crapware. It's pretty responsive if you ask me. The screen isn't the best, but it's not a breaker by any means.
Best at all 7 inch using it as remote control with droimote app for my shield tv that is the reason, because I was using my phone, with CM12 pretty fast.
For the $35 I spent it is definitely worth it. My biggest gripe is the screen. They don't appear to have compensated for the pixel shape. It is slightly condensed in portrait and slightly wider in landscape. This is noticeable with text and icons. Since this is a kindle device I am kind of surprised. That said, the resolution is not as bad as I expected. Also amazon really needs more functionality to interact with with the Firetv. The other downer is there is not even a basic integration of Alexa or dictation.

No I didn't test over 15min originally, thought it was crashing right away on you.
Today, I'm currently over 30 min on pandora. Screen was turned off via power button. When I hit over 1 hour I'll test screen off via auto timeout. I know it really shouldn't make a difference at all but I'll try it anyway.

Screen off via auto timeout, over 1 hr no problem with pandora.
Did you post your bug in either of the rom threads?

These things are the BOMB with CM on them. Kinda suck with the Amazon modified OS. I had all sorts of trouble getting some apps to work, even after root/market.

I only posted in the FAQ, I may post on LP thread later I guess.
I think the kernel is crashing and I have no idea why.
Best tablet I've ever owned I paid £50 for mine would have gotten another if I had the money black friday
Sent from my Amazon Fire 2015
I bought the tablet for my mom on ebay about a week before it even went on sale (Stupid me, forgot all about black friday/cyber monday and couldn't return) and this thing is pretty slick. I actually went ahead and bought one for myself for the $35 and it'll be here next week. I spent a lot of time looking at different tablets, specs (screen size, ppi, resolution, processor brand/speed/technology, RAM/size/ddr2/ddr3, and a few other things) and this thing is well worth it.
Some might say 7" is small but once you've got it in your hand it feels really good, might not be a 720p resolution for those HD movies but 7" or 10" your eyes are not going to notice a difference.
I don't think I'll keep the Fire OS on mine, wanting to just install android but I'm keeping the Fire OS on my moms. It's got a lot of bloatware it needs hidden but she's going to use it primarily for book reading, so a lot of the Fire OS stuff will work well for her.
This tablet is a steal. I bought two during the Black Friday sale.
I hid all the bloat and installed PlayStore for my mom. After letting my brother and mom use it for a few hours, they really like it. Especially since it is small. When my second one comes in, hopefully tomorrow, I'm going to try one of the custom ROMs available. After messing with it for a bit, I'll give it to my sister and see how she likes it.
My main tablet is an 8" Windows 10 tablet. There are times when I miss using an Android based tablet. So I will definitely borrow this from my sister frequently.

Just to say you aren't alone. Only used the stock rom with some of the stuff trimmed and didn't actually realise that was why it was stopping until checking after reading this yesterday. I just thought I'd reached the end of album/playlist as I wasn't paying enough attention. Playback stopped quite quickly on poweramp even though it was supposed to be looping an album.
I think its great. And it is already seeing a bit of development which I am excited about. Mine is currently rocking cm 12.1 and running like a dream. A quad core processor with a decent panel for $50-35$ is nuts.

Scrolling smoothness

Some phones exhibit choppy scrolling, especially when navigating long web pages when multiple apps are running in the background. Rate this thread to express how you smooth scrolling feels on the LG V30 under such conditions. A higher rating indicates that scrolling is always buttery smooth, even when you're reading a 10,000 word article on "how to kiss a girl".
Then, drop a comment if you have anything to add!
Amazing butter smooth scrolling, feels very zippy
we really need to lower the age of consent by a few years
I replied to anther thread that seems to be covering the same territory. So far the phone is super choppy in some places. Mostly web browsing with Chrome. But the LG home launcher also labs really badly. I wouldn't care so much if it wasn't for knock on. Anyone else having issues? I've messed with all the settings I could think of. Next step is factory reset but I'm trying to avoid that.

Actually, had a thought. I'm using a CPU monitoring app and it seems that cores 5-8 aren't being used much. Maybe it's a chip issue? Or maybe something's wrong with the kernel? I'm mostly a dummy when it comes to this stuff so forgive my wild speculation.

Are you by chance using any auto fill apps? I was using Lastpass auto fill and it caused lots of choppy scrolling. After disabling it everything was very smooth.

Good suggestion.
That was a great suggestion! Turns out it wasn't Last Pass but some type of Norton web security thing in Accessibility Services that was the issue. Turning that off seems to have fixed the problem

Mostly Butter but...
I have some strange bounce back happening when I scroll, mostly in Instagram. The rest of the time it's smooth, but not quite as smooth as the Note 8, which I owned for a few weeks. By and large it is as quick as the Note was...
Settings/Developer Options/tick on "Force GPU Rendering" should make the beast smoother faster. if root available try L Speed/Entropy/fstrim apps found on Play Store! If LG G6 gets Android 7.1.2 , the performance should improve smoother over Android 7.0 just like the LG V30 is incredibly smooth and fast due to SD 835. Android Oreo 8.0 should have faster boot times on powering up. LG flagships gets Oreo by the end of this year (November or December)
It's just garbage for scrolling. I couldn't believe that my Galaxy S8 with MORE crap installed actually scrolled smoother on Instagram, Sync Pro, etc.
I always turn off animations in developers settings. Seems really smooth for me so far.
This phone is just as smooth as the Note 8 I had before it. Buttery smooth. I don't use Instagram, but all the apps I use including Chrome, have very smooth scrolling. I'm completely satisfied with this phone.
Edit...3 days of using this phone and I'm starting to see the lag and stutter that people are reporting.

Its already been shown you have no credibility and just sprouting bs. This phone is, to steal that somewhat overused term, buttery smooth.
I think you're most likely to see the symptoms if you're used to an iPhone 7 Plus (3 GB RAM) and gone to a V30.
In my experience, it is possible to load up the V30's memory in a way that causes Chrome or Firefox to appear jittery when compared to Safari on the 7 Plus, loaded up heavily in basically the same way.
I notice it but it has not been a particular problem for me. Until I saw this thread, to be honest, I thought it was a Google Android issue v. an Apple iOS method of memory utilization.

Considering I've got an iPhone 7 Plus and iOS 11.1 (public beta) hasn't fixed the refresh issue, I can say that the V30 has been a wonderful experience. Multitasking on my iPhone is nearly impossible with refreshes on as little as two apps open. It's frustrating.
I've been using Samsung browser beta. Chrome was not as fluid. Since the switch I haven't had any scrolling delay.

I cannot imagine why my experience would be so demonstrably different.
Interesting.
I also don't want you to believe that I intended to convey that the V30's little jittering is anything that would keep me from using the device. It's a very minor issue.
To be honest, the V30 seems to be a keeper. I'm rushing headlong toward the deadline for buyer's remorse, and I'm still using it!

My biggest problem is that after ten years of iPhone keyboards, I can't get used to the combination of LG keyboard and Android prediction, and I'll very often send out messages with an embarrassing number of errors.

It's weird. I guess every device and its user are going to vary. My biggest issue with the 7 Plus is app refreshes and call/data quality being horrible. Getting one bar in my apartment on iPhone compared with full bars with V30, crazy!
On keyboards, I use Swype on iPhone so for me it was an easy transition. Before iPhone allowed third party keyboards, I was jailbroken. I love trace keyboards.

Have a look at the swiftkey keyboard i think it's way more convenient than LGs own and you can customise its design as well, it's very quick and accurate on the predictions and you can use it simultaneously with several languages!

Thanks very much for the suggestion. I've installed Swiftkey and will be trying it out today.
For all the haters, that video proof is rendering
