I'm trying to recover files from it but do not know where to start. Every thread I see either has their bootloader locked or can't access recovery mode.
My bootloader is unlocked, USB debugging is enabled and I do have access to recovery mode. I'm just wondering what to do next in order to access my photos using my PC.
If someone could help, it would be greatly appreciated. It got stuck in bootloop not long after I changed the battery.
P.S. my phone is not rooted nor have I rooted it before. Hopefully it isn't needed in order to recover files from it (even though I heard it could help).
Update: Alright so I literally heated my Nexus with a hair dryer and it got off bootloop. Hilarious. Hopefully it keeps working and doesn't go back into bootloop...

Hi everyone. Hope somebody can help me restore my phone again. I have successfully unlocked the bootloader of my phone but I cannot boot to Rom. Every time I power on the phone it will boot to CM stock recovery. Tried to flash TWRP recovery but unable to write image. Device is locked. Did some research and found out the reason behind this is I did not unable update to CM Recovery in Developer Options.
What is the best way to resolve this issue? I still have access to Fastboot and can do ADB commands but device is locked.
Will sideloading a stock CM OP2 Rom will fix the issue? I'm also concerned with the draining of the battery, if I cannot turn on because no more charge already.
I'm using Mac computer but I can borrow a windows laptop to fix this.
Any help will be highly appreciated..
Thank you very much in advance guys!
God bless!
Hello!
My nexus 6P is stuck in a bootloop and I need to get my photos from the internal storage. I am unable to enter recovery mode; when I try to enter recovery mode, the device just goes back to the Google logo. Is there a way to recover my files even if USB debugging is not enabled and my device is not rooted?
Thank you!
Is your bootloader unlocked? If it is then you should be able to flash one of the kernels from here: https://forum.xda-developers.com/nexus-6p/general/guide-fix-nexus-6p-bootloop-death-blod-t3640279 and it'll allow your phone to boot up completely so you can transfer data from your phone to your computer.

How could I know if my bootloader is unlocked? But I think it's locked since I don't remember unlocking it.
While your 6P is turned off hold volume down and press the power key to turn it on. This will put the phone into fastboot mode and from there you can look at the text towards the bottom of the screen. If it says: Device is UNLOCKED then the bootloader is unlocked and you can flash one of those kernels. If it says: Device is LOCKED then your bootloader is locked and you will not be able to pull the info off of your phone.

It says that device is locked. So this means that there is no way to retrieve the files on my phone? Or is it possible to physically open the device then get the internal storage and access it somehow?
The only other way you might be able to get the data off your phone is to get the SoC re-soldered on so that it'll stop bootlooping, but I'm not entirely sure this will work. Other than that I don't think there's any other way to get your data.

Because you are bootloader locked, the workaround of flashing a custom kernel is not available to you. In order to flash a kernel you need to be unlocked, but the process of unlocking your bootloader WILL WIPE your phone and all your data will go with it. There are threads talking about using a hairdryer to heat up the phone before powering it on to put it in limp mode. If you can get your phone to boot up, you can enable USB Debugging under Developer Settings and then try to get your files off, but chances are extremely unlikely because you have to keep the phone hot to prevent it from bootlooping again. Opening the phone to access the memory chips is a non-starter. Lastly, are you absolutely positive that your photos are not automatically uploaded to Photos? Have you accessed (logged into) Google photos and verified they are not there?
Help! I'm in the same situation!

If your bootloader is locked and you don't have usb debugging enabled there is not much you can do. Have you logged into Google photos on your PC to verify your photos are not there? If your data/photos are not the issue and you just need your phone working again, there is another thread on how to do that (with a little luck).
Hi Guys,
I have gone through your messages. In my case bootloader is locked but USB debugging is ON. Also I checked google photos. Some photos are there but camera and whatsapp photos are not there. May I know any work around to get the data ?

Drop down to the stock recovery mode and use adb to pull files to your PC. If you have TWRP recovery installed you can just use MTP to drag and drop files. Photos are located in /sdcard/DCIM/Camera. WhatsApp photos are in /sdcard/WhatsApp/Media.
I have exact same problem as OP and my phone is Locked and I don't remember enabling debugging mode. From reading replies I understand I can't get my data in internal storage. Now what should I do to make my phone boot-up. I don't need my data back. Also I'm confused about flashing Factory image vs flashing OTA. What does the two mean and what should I do?

Have you found a way to recover phone the phone from bootlooping. As i'm facing the similar problem, when I try to boot into recovery, it starts bootlooping, and I can't use that hairdryer method as there is no OS installed in my phone, and top of that, my bootloader locked too...

Sorry, but if you have no OS, and bootloader locked, and bootlooping you are dead in the water. My phone was unlocked so I was able to use the 4-core method. If your new phone is a Google product, unlock the bootloader from day one.
Hey guys,
So the USB cable I was using to flash my fiance's ph-1 to an Oreo beta came unplugged halfway through the flash.
The phone is now in a bootloop. I can't get to recovery mode via VU+pwr or through the fastboot menu. I can use fastboot and my PC recognizes the phone. However, I forgot to tick allow bootloader unlock in Dev setting so I am unable to flash anything to the phone.
Edit: Wondering if there is still a way to get the phone recognized in QFIL with HS-USB mode... I have tried every button combination I can think of with no luck :/
Am I screwed?
Any help is greatly appreciated..

Ask essential for help, they should be able to sort this out. I think you'll have to send it back to them. In any case, please let us know how you manage to solve it.
Good luck

No luck from essential, they told me all they can do is offer an out of warranty replacement for 200 bucks. I really expected better from a company that actively promotes participating in their beta's so frequently online. :/
Doesn't make sense you must be leaving something out??
You couldn't have been flashing OB with a locked bootloader it would have just failed.
use fastboot getvar to check your bootloader status. if it is unlocked then unlock critical and flash the back to stock zip on this thread.
That will correct your issue they even have the OB3 out https://forum.xda-developers.com/essential-phone/development/stock-7-1-1-nmj20d-t3701681
You could even flash it through TWRP recovery as long as you bootloader is unlocked.
Hello I am posting in Q&A because I'm a new XDA user, I was not allowed to post in the dev channel.
I have an Essential phone that has been working great for the past few years, no issues, and it was running standard build receiving OTA updates, until the very last update, which soft bricked the phone.
The phone was never enabled in developer mode while in Android, and now, I can't boot the phone into android at all. The only thing I can do is get into fastboot.
Fastboot state shows DEVICE STATE - locked
Any commands I try to unlock flashing, or change slots, anything at all, I get the error that the device is locked so all commands to unlock fail.
Is there any way to unlock device state from fastboot? I saw a youtube video showing a way to use a chopped USB cable to enter emergency / EDL mode for Qualcomm-based Android devices, but have not seen anyone post that this was successful with the Essential
Does anyone know of any method to be able to unlock flashing from fastboot? Or any other method to un-brick an essential? I've attempted everything, on both Mac and PC, nothing works.
On mac or PC, I can query the device in fastboot and get a response, I just can't do anything to unlock anything!!
Many thanks in advance for any suggestions!
Same problem
Same thing happened to me. Same day as you. I can get fastboot but not adb but since the device is locked I can't flash. I've only had the phone about 6 months so I contacted customer support and they offered to replace the phone.
It might be a known issue because they didn't even try to address the fact that I could get fastboot connected but not adb. They just offered to replace.
Thanks for the info! I am -at least in this case- unfortunately an early adopter. I bought two essentials at the beginning of the pre-release.
Essential support checked my serial number and said the phone was out of warranty.
Has anyone been able to force the Essential into EDL mode to recover that way? It looks like you have to latch one of the USB pins to ground, or 5V, but I haven't found any detailed instructions on how to make this work on the essential...
Thanks again
Justin
I'm sure things have changed and I'm wrong, but if you can get into the fastboot menu can't you just cycle through the options until you get to recovery and then flash an official release from Essential?
I may be thinking of LG or something but this should be possible as long as it's newer than the current software installed because it will see it as an official update and allow the flash.
Thanks but unfortunately, when I try and do that, the phone just does the same thing, it hangs forever on the initial boot screen white Android text with the circle/square logo...
That's why I've been looking into the more direct hardware version of forcing the phone into EDL mode, which is supposed to be possible with all Qualcomm based phones.
I've just not found the time yet to find a USB-C cable I'd be happy to cut in half and short the pins on! Which is why I was hoping someone might have tried this with an essential before to know if it was successful before I start trashing good cables
Thanks again for your reply!

I have the exact same problem,
My phone is stuck on Essential log when I turned it on,
I can access Bootloader normally but the device is locked so I cannot flash it,
Recovery is corrupted, when I try to star it, it shows only the the Essential log and freeze so I can not format or wipe or sideload.
OEM Locked and unchecked
USB Debugging is unchecked
and I can't flash anything,
Did you managed to unlock it through Fastboot command or any other way ?
I wish I can just login to the recovery or unlock it so I can flash it clean,
Kindly help me if you found a way out
Thank you
I have a rooted RP2 MR1 on android9. I tried to unroot the device since I am trying to sell the phone. I went into magastik and clicked Complete Uninstall. After the phone restarted it booted into Recovery Mode. I cannot get past this. I can go into the Bootloader from Recovery Mode. I have tried ADB but my phone isn't be recognized.
Not sure what I am doing wrong, or if this can be fixed. Any help is appreciated!

To get my phone to be recognized, I had to try two different cables, as well as follow this video to install the standard adb drivers.
New user so I can't post the full link, so add this after the .com/ of youtube
watch?v=1TxjSa8gemM
From there look up the stock ROMs installer for the RP2 and follow the instructions for that.
I just ran into the same problem. I uninstalled through magisk then rebooted. now i can get to recovery and bootloader but phone wont boot. I tried reinstalling factory image from razer's website but adb gets stuck at waiting for device. I have used 6 differnt drivers and 5 different cables including a samsung sync and transfer cable i went out and bought today hoping the cable was the issue. any update on how you fixed it or advice from anyone else would be greatly appreciated as this is my only phone.

Are you using the ADB/Fastboot that Razer recommends on their site? I had this problem too until I updated my ADB/Fastboot.
Yeah, I feel like an idiot. It's been a while since I've used adb. I ended up moving the fastboot file into the same folder as the the image I was trying to flash and had my phone working 30 minutes later. I meant to reply but it was 6 am and I went to sleep. Lol
