Hi everyone,
Is there a setting to make the OnePlus display less glaringly bright at night? I've never had a display that is so intense even on the lowest setting. It almost seems like a fault, as surely people don't want their screen this bright when they're in bed? I feel like a screen should be super bright or super dim depending on your needs.
Weirdly it seems brighter than it was before the last update with May security, although I'd only had it for one day at that point.

They've made it brighter intentional to try eliminate screen issues on low brightness..
I bought this phone partly for this reason, i don´t want my screen to be extreme dark at night but i also don´t want to disable auto brightness, so this behavior is a win for me.
Just wanted to share my opinion on that matter.
Or you can flash a custom kernel, like CleanSlate, which provides a way to finely tune the minimum brightness. This way, you can specify you want your screen to be able to go even under the minimum brightness set by OnePlus, and this at specific hours only (at night, for example) if you wish.
Yep, the increased brightness is to cover up the screen issues.

Not really much of a fix for someone like me who no longer roots or flashes. I run work software and banking software on my phone so I can't be flippant with what I use.

Not really eliminating the issue if it's merely trying to hide it. All of my other AMOLED phones over the past few years have been able to go to a much lower brightness without looking like crap, so I would expect a £900 device like this to have no compromises. The 'fix' (if that is what they're calling it) seems like more of a deceit to me.

Given the image retention, the black crush and the pretty average camera I think it's time to send the device back then. It's otherwise a nice device but even after Amazon refunded 20% for me I still feel that £729 is too much for a device with screen flaws.
If they do a hardware fix I might buy it again, although the 8T will be out by then ?

You do need to flash but don't need to root your device to use this kernel. Just check in the Kernel/Roms section and you'll find all the information you need in case you feel like solving your issue.
I use banking apps on my phone too and they're extremely sensitive to system alterations. Still, they work flawlessly on my rooted and 'kernelized' device, as I make sure to hide all traces of root for those apps thanks to Magisk Hide function and my phone also passes Safetynet.
Anyway, I hope you solve your issue, whatever solution you decide to go for.

I don't want to sound ungrateful, so thank you for your advice. Even if this provided some kind of fix I would never wish to start flashing third party kernels on a phone costing this much - I would have done this 10 years ago but nowadays I believe a phone of this price should not require work on my part (beyond a software toggle) to make it suitable for my needs, so I will be returning it and looking elsewhere I think.
I appreciate your help and the input of others though, so thank you very much. I'm sure you're all happy with the device but I think it's just not for me.
You can download apps that decrease the minimum brightness below the standard without rooting but tbh, the display looks like green sh** below the min.

You may also be able to get a lower light level if you use the DC dimming option in the OnePlus Lab settings. At least on my phone, the lowest brightness levels appear somewhat dimmer when DC mode is switched on.

Thanks, I already had DC dimming on anyway, but toggling it on an off doesn't seem to make any difference to me.

When I first got the phone in April it got very, very dim but after an update they raised the min brightness because the screen looks like hell with the brightness lower. My 7pro is much dimmer now in the dark.

People need to stop trying to fix the crack as it is bigger than the fix (Those who defend OnePlus indirectly)!!

There is 0 exuces for expensive devices to have such issues. OnePlus has a major quality control problem.
I know OP was looking at non root, non custom kernel solutions, but I did some digging and found that
/sys/devices/platform/soc/ae00000.qcom,mdss_mdp/backlight/panel0-backlight/brightness
Would be set to minimum of any potential being 45 (for me). I can lower this, thus lowering brightness below the minimum which is desirable, but I want to incorporate a bit easier control via auto brightness. There is a setting listed for max brightness here, but not inherently what I wanted, I want minimum brightness, and have auto brightness go between min and max..
I use Dimly. Problem solved.

yea if it's true it's really amazing. Maybe it's that aperture ppl were talking about (Beards i think).
But the quality kinda sucks though
Indeed, the lens supports a wide aperture of F2.8, and combined with a slower shutter speed can give excellent low light results. However, you do at least need to hold the camera still, and it also helps to point it at something interesting

i guess f2.8 is still not big enough for a faster shutter speed in night mode
but im guessing lowlight performance can be really good with f2.8
The larger aperture is awesome! We've been complaining about nothing, a larger aperture > LED flash. Now, I don't know what the excuse is for the notification LED though...
yeah I will test out night mode, it says it's slower shutter. and yes it does make everything look brighter =D. i'll try it out

+1 on this. screw the flash, but we do need a flashlight !
Agree! Flashlight for the people! But there is a solution for everything!
What you need:
1. 1pcs Samsung Galaxy S
2. 1pcs Mini LED Lamp Light
3. Silver gaffer tape
4. Sense of humor.
Cut off a piece of tape, remove the keychain from the LED Light. Place the LED Light at the top back of you phone with the led diode facing upwards, use a piece of tape to stick it in place. Do not forget to cut out a hole the on/off switch!
Alt. download a "flashlight" app from Market, and use the white screen for lightning up dark places, not as good, but it will work in most occasions
I will really miss my kewl flashlight app from my HD2! *cries*

Well, the screen is OLED, so it's kind of like an LED flashlight.. right?
I am thinking of this idea too ..
Getting really thin LED and draw the battery from the phone.
dig a hole on the back cover and place the LED there..
I dont have the phone yet .. not sure if there is enuf space for that.
You could always get a miniture torch for your key-ring. It would be much cheaper than paying for a LED flash on the phone. Lol
Android on HD2
Are people actually trading in their hd2's for this? It seems like an extremely incremental upgrade. 2 steps forward, one flash back. To any US tmobile HD2 owners considering getting this phone (or more specifically the samsung vibrant) because it has android, consider this; Android has already been ported to the hd2 and should be in full working condition in a matter of weeks. Patience is a virtue.
And just in case this whole "android on hd2" thing doesn't work out...how bright would you say the screen is as a flashlight? gotta keep those options open right? For instance, how much would it help in middle of the night in a dark forest with thick foliage on a very cloudy night? My hd2 has practically saved my life in such a situation...
Also, how does the camera's night mode work in a completely dark situation? Assuming I want to remember such a happy scenario as described above.

http://www.4sevens.com/product_info.php?products_id=1894&osCsid=ffb6f1d727d342b6d6e96b864effcdab
these CREE LED flash lights burns!, not like the torch, but it does burn your eyes, they are super lumen, perfect for any occasion
when i use them on my bike incoming bikers says "wow that lights burns, where did you get it from"
there's another model that is slightly cheaper http://www.4sevens.com/product_info.php?products_id=1922&osCsid=ffb6f1d727d342b6d6e96b864effcdab
but it's not exactly made for keychain, but you can easily slap a keychain to it
I'm personally pretty pissed about the lack of a flash. I've been looking EVERYWHERE to find a replacement for my X1, and both the devices I found hae unfixable issues that make them rather unusable for me.
The EVO 4G.... its CDMA >_<
The Galaxy S... has no flash (it's necessary for me for multiple reasons even if I exclude pictures and needing a flashlight for the damn spiders around here)... unless of course I could usa CDMA.
I'm seeing some Verizon in my future. AT&Ts lovefest of the iPhone has scared all of the devices that don't suck away.
These low-light pictures show some promise, but how would the device perform in ZERO light conditions capturing an object about 2 feet away or so? I mean sure the device's screen will give some low amount of light to a small area, but I don't know if that would be enough from such a distance.
for a picture taken without flash thats amazing.
***** 09/01/2012 Epinter CM10 light levels can be customized on 09/01/2012 build.

*** 08/25/2012. Added brighter levels. Auto brightness levels can be edited on CM7, CNA JB builds, maybe some others. Check your display options.
** Added alternative levels. Changed Decrease Hysteresis to 0 % overlap to allow the screen to dim down to the lowest value.
*These settings cannot be changed on Neutrino ROM.
Here are my current Light Sensor Settings. I am experiencing smooth levels transitions and it is also easy on your eyes when using your phone in the dark.
Refer to the attached screen shot for quick reference. I set my Number of Levels to 49 and follow the pattern of + 5 screen brightness for every 100 sensor level. Follow the pattern up to 255 screen brightness.

Window Length is set to 20 sec, Sample Interval to 1 Sec with Reset Threshold Disabled. I use Custom Screen Dim Level set to 1 and Light Decrease Hysteresis to 0%.
Tip: Some people find the final screen level of 255 unnecessary and they keep 230 as their highest brightness value. I set it all the way to the max because I hate not being able to see my screen in the sun. Lower final value has a potential to improve your battery life.
---------------------
Here are some alternative levels if you feel you want the screen to be a little brighter.
Again, follow the pattern of +5 screen brightness for every 50 sensor level.
-----------------------
08/25/2012
Try these levels if you still find the previous levels too dim.
+5 Screen steps still remain. Number of levels are 49.
Sensor levels are +25 at every step. Follow the pattern shown on screen shot all the way to screen level 255.
Button brightness is really not needed after a certain screen (50?) level because you would be able to see them in broad daylight/ bright room.
Note: I updated the setting for Decrease Hysteresis to 0% overlap to allow the screen to dim down to 1 when using your phone in the dark.
Hit the thanks button if you find this useful!

Near perfect levels can be pretty useful.
I haven't applied these just yet (but I am about to) but what I found when I was getting great life on MIUI is that keeping it on the lowest possible comfortable setting (as opposed to auto brightness) makes a world of difference.
If I spend the day in my house, my brightness stays on the lowest setting for that full amount of time, so I get an increase by not using autobrightness. With auto, it would change if one room was brighter than another.
I guess it's your mileage may vary
EDIT: I realized this post doesn't make much sense and is mostly rambling. So long story short, these settings will only make a decent impact while using autobrightness IF you are primarily at the lower levels of lighting
Hope these levels are doing people good. I have been on these levels for almost three months now.

Well, it's a tiny bit snappier, and a tiny bit faster overall.
The battery is better; I get 3:45 to 4 hours SOT in auto brightness, full location services with wireless scanning, google now on, google cards on, hot word on from any screen... the full google experience, for short.
It's better than I had with a variety of mods and ROMs on Marshmallow.
I especially enjoy the new notification center. I can read numerous full messages and emails right from the notification slide. Quite awesome.
And I thank the gods of Google for removing the stupid enlarged tiles for Wireless and Bluetooth, the most annoying feature ever.
Battery is not bad for stock but I get the feeling with all mods and tweaks and kernels and such android M was a bit better...
But it would be unfair to compare those two as M has been worked on for a year now... N is fresh out of the box so let's wait and see how much battery can be improved.
Other than that N is very fluent and fast. Up to now also very stable and offers some important options that used to be mods some years ago.
Camera... And such... Did not really compare but would expect them to be similar...

I haven't tried N yet, but I was reading a comment on Slashdot that led me to believe, that it included something similar to CM13 privacy manager ? Is this true? Do you now get to choose what apps get access to? Can you block them from wireless, cellular data?
^ This feature alone made me upgrade the wife's and kids tablets from Nexus 7s to Nexus 7 (2013)s so I could put them on CM13.

No, but you can do that from Data Usage in Settings, in M as well.
I've been using it for 2 days now. The doze feature is way better than that of M. I've noticed certain performance boost in games like asphalt 8 as the game used to lag after thermal throttling was active in M.
The usage is very very smooth, feels very light. I mostly love the quick settings panel as because it looks and is well organised than the previous version. It's just an initial build and its quite stable. I would say I am impressed and good to go with 7.0.
Well this was my perspective.

Under M there was almost no charging when screen was on and you did some browsing...
Might be slightly better under N... though I havent tested it long enough to confirm... Charging basically stopped when you used your phone constantly and not just for writing a text under M...

I tested it while playing a game (8 ball pool, not a resource intensive app) and the percentage went up atleast 2 to 3 % in roughly 5-10 minutes. It seems that it is improved. But we still need someone to look through the kernel's code or run a reliable test!
I have it on my 5x since it dropped was on dp5 before that. Official seems smoother don't really use the 5x since I got the s7.
I'm actually seeing what seems to be worse battery performance. I've eliminated a few apps that were troublesome, but it looks like the battery is draining faster than on "M". I'm hoping that it's simply a problem with the crappy cell signal in my office - my connection bounces between 27 different towers and it's still crappy at best.
Atleast for me, I can confirm that charging while screen on is finally fixed. Hail hydra!
As previously stated, it feels a lot snappier and lighter being on Nougat as opposed to Marshmallow. Quick Settings are better overall, especially when you're able to add custom quick tiles via apps in the Play Store. Only complaint about the Quick Settings is that the Wifi and Bluetooth used to toggle on press, then open mini settings when you clicked the text. Now it just opens mini settings. I can get used to that, though.
Oh, and I still hate the white background in the settings app. Haven't found any Layers themes that work well yet. If anybody else finds one, let me know.

Important, there are sorta probs about Substratum and Android N, such as make sure you wont apply it to Chrome and Documents for example. You'd get instant force close. And if there's any other app like that, you need to make sure it is off the list to get themed.

Description:
This thread is made to get you some extra juice, based on my own experience and testing.
You will find tips here for rooted and unrooted users. If you know more things to save some battery, be sure to post it here!
Bugs & Features:
You will gain a better battery life
Bugs could be possible no background sync of apps you are hibernating for example.
Maybe more, depends on which tools you are activating.
Optimizations in Oxygen OS
Let's start with some basics:
1. Use the dark Theme! OnePlus made a great thing with implementing a dark theme, as we have a super amoled display, this means when the color black (no dark grey or blue, it has to be BLACK) the pixels will consume nearly 0% battery even when the screen is on.
The Theme is system wide, even some stock apps like dialer, contacts and the status bar will turn black.
2. Use a black wallpaper (the more black the more battery you will safe, just Google for some nice walls) [Wallpaper Changer is a nice app if you like some variety.]
3. Disable all Gestures (except Pocket Mode). I haven’t tested how much this can safe, maybe it is only a little bit.
4. Disable Location & Sync services if you never need them. You can also disable Wi-Fi and Bluetooth as much as you can to extend you battery ("Tasker" is a great option for doing this automatically!)
5. Disable/Uninstall as many apps as you can (f.e. Chrome if you use the Snapdragon Browser written some lines later, the Google app a known battery drainer), use the stock apps over self-downloaded apps (f.e. Calc, Clock, Dialer,…, as these have a dark mode)
6. You can find some more settings on this post
No Root Apps
1. “Pixel Filter” – Set it to 50%, it will look the best. Pixel Filter is useful for Amoled display, as it will turn XX% of your screen pixel off. The screen quality will look worse but for me most of the time 50% is still okay and you can turn it off at any time
2. “Hibernation Manager” – Turn on as many options as you can and want
3. “Snapdragon Browser” based on Chromium by @arter97 – A browser optimized for the new Snapdragon Devices. It has a battery safer option, a dark mode and has a adblock option. Turn on both to safe more battery, especially if you are browsing much.
4. If you are using google maps much, be sure to download the regions you are living offline!
Root Apps
1. "Greenify" – Take a look at both Greenify & Hibernation Manager and choose one of them!
2. "Amplify" – Take a look here for the best settings
3. Take a look at Advanced Kernel Tweaks. I've tested it on my OnePlus 3T and its making its wonder. I really recommend giving it a try.
4. Download Monochrome and let it do its work at 15% battery
Please give a "thanks" to me if you like my post by pressing the following button.
Do you have a before and after screenshot?
Pretty much don't have a smart phone with these options on
Thanks

I've been trying to figure out how to turn off sync in the background have you do that for apps?
This is BS.
The guide for best battery life on the 3T should include 1 rule only:
1. Don't do anything and you will have 6-8h SOT guaranteed

Yep....I'm doing zero of these things...But I did grab the pixel screen for emergency...like if I don't have my battery charger...I'm in Chicago all day.....8pm rolls around and I know I won't get to a charger Tull like 4am....I might use that instead of battery saver mode. I grabbed the snapdragon chrome also.
I also have a custom kernel but not to down clock....to customize the governor and I/O controller. And eventually maybe f2fs, but I'm waiting for more roms to come out. Like freedom os after Android N is released.
I would also give the advice to use custom Governor scripts. I am using X.a.n.a battery from op3 and it works fine.
Using stock kernel I get 15-16% usage per our when screen on with stock settings, with xana I get 10-11 %

3. Download a custom kernel and underclock the GPU if you don’t game and the CPU as we usually don’t need that much cpu power (here is a good video for the OP3, hopefully elementalX or Boeffla Kernel will come to our T)

Good post!
But I'm sorry to inform you that this """good video""" is completly bull****.
Here is why:

That tutorial is absolute bull****, he is not even underclocking to efficient frequencies
I mean, of course you will get better SOT. You are limiting the CPU!!!
But it WILL LAG If you demand more performance...
That's not the way a phone should work and even more a phone like ours, your are losing tons of performance by doing that.
Stay calms on low usage but be able to deliver full performance on load

For low~mid usage it will perform okay, but demand it a high load and then tell me how it goes
And why would you buy a device such as OP3 If you are going to keep it running on 1401Mhz... That's little bit than half of the full performance
I mean, wouldn't be smarter to buy a device that caps at 1401MHz since you ""don't need"" more

Exactly. I mean I pretty much leave everything on except BT because I don't use it that much. I can still get 5-6 hours SOT or more if I'm on wifi all day. That's with the light theme and everything. But hey, some people want to squeeze out as much as they can..

Disabling Sync does actually nothing.
No idea why so many people think its so important to turn it off.

Revoking camera from snapchat doesn't really make sence, then you Can also deinstall the app.

Uninstall ES File explorer (if you have it installed)
So I have my 3T for 2 days now, and the battery life was quite decent I thought. It was until today that I say ES file explorer at the very top of most used battery with a whopping 42% battery use of which 80+% in the background.
Then today when I used greenify to force hibernate it, I noticed my phone not being as warm anymore, I thought it was normal.
Great thread btw.

I though i would start a thread where we could play around with tuning the color controls now that we have working root/magisk. I am using Snoke kernel and I have been adjusting my screen trying to find the right balance. I am by no means an expert when it comes to tuning a display and therefore i was hoping that some of the experts could chime in. Ultimately i would like the display to be a bit similar to what the output was on the Pixel XL. I am also wondering if a certain combination could inherently tone down the blue shift. Maybe a display that is actually "more blue" will appear as if there is blue less shift at an angle. Look forward to some profiles and some ideas. Thank you.

what app are you able to do this with? I also have snoke kernel installed and rooted with magisk. I am using EX kernel manager app but I don't see the option to change color controls in there, I have also tried kernel adiutor.
I haven't done any modding to my pixel 2 xl yet. I'm on the 8.1 developer preview waiting to see how the developer preview 2 improves camera performance. My question is do you see a leasing in screen blue shift when messing with the colors? I ask because it's been unveiled that the iPhone X also has the same issue so I went to my verizon store and looked and compared the pixel 2 xl and iPhone x. It seemed like on the iPhone X it was less noticeable but I'm wondering if that's due to the screen being color calibrated differently.
EX Kernel Manager works for me

I'm not sure why you are not seeing the option to change color controls. I am using EX Kernel Manager -> Graphics -> Advanced color control and am able to tweak all of the various color controls without issues (BTW the screen looks great with some additional saturation). Perhaps you don't have proper root access or did not enable advanced settings in EX Kernel Manager?
In terms of settings, I'm currently sporting Saturation: 75, Value: 133, Contrast: 129, and Hue left at 0. It's fairly saturated but I'm enjoying the difference. I'd like to see some other ideas as well. Thanks!

I got it figured out and working now. It was an issue with the kernel not being installed because installing magisk would overwrite it with the stock kernel.
Anyways, my profile I'm using right now is Red: 248, Green: 251, Blue: 256, Saturation: 55, Value: 136 and Contrast: 136. Looks good to me, anything past 55 saturation makes people seem too orange in pictures taken on the camera imo.

Ah yes, that'll do it. I got tired of the saturation being as high as I had it set, and pulled it back to 55. It seems like a nice balance to me as well. I have not yet tried to mess with the RGB settings.

Just wanted to update, I updated to the november update and I set the display color setting to "saturated" and it looks a bit too red. So I changed Red: 240, Green: 244 and Blue: 256. Has more blue hue to it now and colors really pop but I like it, might mess around with turning down the saturation a bit but not sure yet.
Is there any kind of gamma control at the moment using ex kernel manager. I'm pretty sure that's the adjustment I'm looking for. The crushing of blacks & lack of definition between similar dark colours sometimes just makes whole images & video look completely black.
Will it help with blue tint at all???

Cool. Might have to give snoke a try.
The kcal advanced color control works well. Just wish it played nice with night light. We shouldn't even need to do things like this.
Future updates to the phone will need better default color profiles. Saturated mode sucks.
The the app be used with the stock kernal ?

Haven't looked. I'm still on stock.
I've been using the following settings and can now say the screen on my device is really really really good. First off I started out with Saturated color mode. I think choosing Natural or Boosted would affect my changes. Then I got the white balance perfect for me by adjusting the colors although I do see that it changes a bit based on the brightness of the screen. I made it a little more on the warm/neutral side which is what I prefer. I then worked hard to get the gamma curve down to around 2.0 by setting Screen Value to 133. I used a gamma test while adjusting that value. I believe the default gamma curve was 2.4 which makes blacks way too dark. I also set Saturation Intensity down to 20 to fix the ridiculously saturated reds and other colors. It seems to be the right balance for me. My only real issues are now the black smearing affect and black crush (which I could not seem to fix no matter what I changed). The blue shift on my device is minimal so its not really an issue (I think because my device out of the factory was on the warm side) and I don't see the grainy screen like others have complained about.
